Bullpen Win
Great win using a lot of pitchers. Hopefully Wood gets his wish now and gets to go further than 5. I wonder if Kap set this up that way? We know Wood is tired of getting pulled early.
Wanna pitch longer? Pitch better.
Peralta doesn’t seem to be the same guy, let’s roast him.
That column James linked to last night about guys who didn’t walk much was great. Couple local middle IFs on that, Ernie Bowman of Giants (1961-63) and A’s Rob Picciolo.
Barely remember Bowman, who in 1963 got 0 walks in 125 ABs while hitting .184. Traded to Braves in Felipe Alou deal 1964.
Picciolo spent 6 years with A’s 1979-85. Career average 6 BBs over 360 ABs with .246 OB.
Schmitt’s totals for 2023, if you combine Sac with SF, 8 BBs/196 ABs. And hitting over .300.
look who’s leading NL in OBP…..Late Night Lamonte. Seriously Farhan’s best scrap heap pick up by a mile, right? Who’s next?
sorry, that’s all of MLB not just NL
Him and GD were both here at same time battling to make big club, sent up/down. Pleasant surprise defensively at 1b.
back to .500 boys!
Wood has pitched fine this is on Kapler not letting him go long enough to get a win.He has a choke collar on him every time he pitches unlike Webb,T-Bone etc.No trust is No good! Yeah since he used mostly his whole pen yesterday it would be wise to stretch out Wood today for change Kappy..
Scrap heap players you don’t know how they were going to play out when picked up besides WadeJr , has to be Estrada,Conforto&Davis.Estrada is an everyday stud player at 2B,Conforto really has came on after a slow start, but that injured shoulder he lost all of last season on is totally healthy with the bombs and just squaring up 100 plus bat speed hits.Davis huge turnaround with his defense is a major plus, and he’s delivered big hits as well.
Wood’s coming back from injury so it isn’t like Kapler’s doing it for no reason.
Solano hadn’t even played MLB for 2 years (2017-18) before he was picked up as FA. Giants totals: .308/.354/.789. 2019 he hit .330; he’d been released by like 5 teams already.
Hit .284 for Reds last year. Surprised to see him in lineup with Twins, gotta admit, at age 35.
Yesterdays game was very impressive especially because of the way the bullpen was used. Don’t know how long Conforto can keep this up but it sure has brought this team to a new level.
Could certainly turn around, but Giants now 3-1 in pen games per Slush with 2 solid back to back outings.
Baggs had nice column in Athletic about adjustments made by Manaea Junis and Taylor Rogers and how roles have changed. Alexander closed a game then opened it, and Brebbia did same thing. T
Hope they don’t overplay the bullpen game hand. Maybe Manaea has earned another start.
It’s really difficult to be a good hitter and not draw at least 40-50 walks over a full season. I’m liking my Hunter Pence/Schmitt comp.
James…I read where the Tigers had 2 players Craig Robinson &Alex Sanchez both going 207 AB’s without a walk ( different times) that’s crazy! Actually with Sanchez manager Sparky Anderson ordered him to take some pitches to get a walk he got the count to 3-1 but then the umpire called a strike 2 pitch that was an obvious ball to the bitchin of Anderson then he took strike 3 down the middle. That put him at 146 straight then he got traded and added 61 straight games without a walk till Pitcher Dennis Ramsmunn (sp?) had the dubious honor of walking him!
Both Sanchez&Robinson had the same number 207 AB’s without a walk unreal but true..
Another player Alfredo Griffin had a long streak too in not getting a walk, don’t recall his number but it was a long time also.I seriously doubt Schmitt will challenge those guys, he will get a walk soon I expect..
Alfredo Griffin, Rob Picciolo, definitely pre-Billy Beane kinda A’s players!
Rob Piccolo lol 😂 yeah another no walk guy! Pitchers knew he couldn’t hit so they went after him aggressively..He had a 2 year run where the A’s gave him over 600 AB’s and he had 5 walks total, one every 42 games in those 2 year stretch..
Back when light-hitting SSs were all the rage.
Talking to my brother-in law, big Angels fan. Wants to trade Ohtani and Trout. Reload. Not the worst idea.
We were talking about young players. Would be a lie to say this season more fun than 2021, but right now seeing Estrada Wade, Schmidt, Baily, even Bart and Sabol (mashing for a rule 5 guy) we have hope for several guys to be around a long time like the early WS teams and the core pitchers we had. Davis too. They won’t all make it, but if 2-3 do it’s a great start to building a team that can compete…
Hmmm, looks like some of my posts are disappearing or getting lost in the ether.
Nothing in the spam filter
Would be nice for Giants to experience view of world from above .500 first time all year. Two months into season Giants are inscrutable. Win four in a row..lose five in a row. Bullpen shaky…bullpen solid. Conforto hitting below Mendoza line…Conforto suddenly home run and RBI king. Good story lines…Schmitt, Estrada, Davis. Disappointing narratives…Crawford, Haniger, Bart. One constant is Kapler with “revolving door” approach to relief pitcher maneuvers.
Several players have done pretty well, not just the good stories. The FAs are starting to move their stats to MLB norms. If the latter trend continues (likely) and the former holds (less certain), we’ll be mostly happy campers come September.
I don’t think Sandy Alderson gets enough credit for opening the sabr era after the Haas family, less generous than the old man had been, sold the a’s to misers. And he definitely doesn’t get mentioned enough when people talk about the start of the roid era. The opening injections, as it were.
Keeping starting pitchers healthy is still major problem across the board, no matter size of contract.
Verlander has made 4 starts, deGrom 6, Scherzer 5. Braves put Fried on IL, Dodgers have Urias and now D May (60 day) on IL. Rodon of course, 0.
Hope Giants Big 3 can survive 4 more months.
The ERA is now 5th in the NL. That’s one path to the playoffs. Shave another .25 off of the team ERA and reduce the rate of errors. They’ve allowed 29 unearned runs, which is the most in MLB.
Wood won’t make it through 1 at this rate.
Kapler shoulda pulled him when he loaded the bases, just to show him who’s boss.
Well, there you go.
Han bomb!
Is that his first HR north of the border?
Hani*er!!!!!
That’s what Haniger needed ,a 2Run bomb 💣 hope that’s gets him going!
PB!!
Irish Bailey comes thru with a big added RBI!! 3-1 Giants
Wood has to start throwing strikes.
Thanks!
Get it going Haniger!
Haniger with the double!
They never showed the replay. Adames got hit in the head?
Hell yes Hangier !! Knocking in 4Runs man do they need him for extra protection for Conforto ,3 great AB’s!!
Wisely 3-run bomb!
Well they better stretch out Wood now to get a win!
Freaking Wisely oh yeah that was a rocket 🚀 3 run Blast off the façade and you could hear it !!
10-1 and keep pouring it on!!
There’s a chance we may be over 500 for the first time this year
Wisely !! Holy shit!
That ump is just totally fucked, deciding that Sabol needed to swing based on the score.
Clearly my thoughts are with the Giants and Blake Sabol’s OBP.
lqtm….
Wisely’s name reminds me of a guest turn by Pat Harrington on F Troop, playing a spy named B Wise in a Maxwell Smart impression. Though can’t find a Youtube clip of the episode.
.
Flem remarking on ump’s expanded strike zone, gonna be hard for Schmitt to walk tonight.
What’s absurd about the ump’s calls is that he’s not calling the wide strike zone against the Brewers. If the game is over, why the favoritism? He really should be fined for what he’s doing.
Hey Willie, what do you think of the Warriors going after Brook Lopez? Sure he’s old, but he still plays well enough. Love to see anyone with actual size on the team.
Oh definitely cool player that would help GS (and he can shoot), but he’s also expensive, currently at $14 mil. All depends how much lux tax Lacob wants to pay. If GS adds anyone to mix (assuming they dump Lamb and JMG and likely lose DDV) I think it has to be very low level salary player.
Pretty sure he’s Nets’ all-time scoring leader.
Wouldn’t kill me to see Pooole go. Just for the salary relief. Keep DDV.
CBA limits what GS can pay DDV, who can probably get better deal as FA elsewhere. Up to him if he wants to stay.
Mac per usual is right–Brook Lopez 10,444 all time Nets scoring leader, passing
the great Buck Williams by 4 points.
This ump is totally squeezing Wood.
And his strike zone sucks.
He’s calling it correctly against Wood, but not for the Brewers’ pitchers. It’s fucking outrageous.
Alright, Woody gets through 5!
I’m disappointed in Kap’s leadership. Soft.
Glad they gave Haniger a hit on that hard hit ball he’s 3-3 and needs a triple for the cycle, so Bomb one in the gap and go for it Mitch..
Still under 90 pitches. A full 6?
Of course now that I say that.
5 BBs for Wood.
Nope.
I guess the Giants don’t draw well on the road either. Another rousing crowd of 8,500 folks.
What’s up with the yard there that Manfred has said has to be fixed?
Love these oppo shots.
Looks like I missed a hell of a game so far. Giants batting averages are going up. It’s nice to get a game like this now and then.
Except for Wade.
Damn. Davis was an absolute steal.
Ha I was just looking in box at what Flem said: guys not named Wade and Sabol are now 16-28 with 8 extra base hits.
How’s my ex-Met theory lookin?
Batting 1.000.
I did see one of the pitchers Giants got in that deal needs surgery, Szapucki.
Getting into position players on mound territory with 2 more games left on weekend.
No way. Not with Wood going 6-ish. Esp if Beck can get through the 8th.
JD Davis a big time 2Run Bomb!
Crazy Wade&Sabol at the top of the order 0-10 with 8K’s but everyone else have gone off!!
Wade dying for a hit tonight. He musta fallen out of 1st place in the OBP race.
Ooof, brutal night for Wade.
Wade having a night. 0-6 and the muff.
There you go. Mini Craw with the DP.
Over .500! And clinch a series split vs. the Brew Crew!
I still think a lot of our recent success is due to Schmitt and Bailey. I think it lit a fire under the rest of the guys. Looks like the team is truly coming together.
160 runs scored today, including a 12-10 W for Nats over Royals. Pads beat Yanks. Maybe they need to play on Apple TV more often.
