What’s In A Name?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 12, 2020

Bailey, Schmitt, Swiney, Glowenke, Harrison, Dabovich, and Murphy…..

Right now, those names mean nothing to us. In ten years how will we feel? Will they evoke emotions in us like when we see the names “Clark” or “Posey” or “Bumgarner?” Hell, even writing the first word of the previous sentence got me a little jazzed up…..

The bottom line is that we have stunk for years. Stix, when I asked about the highs and the lows of being in the hoosgow you really should have listed “didn’t have to watch the SF Giants shitshow” as your singular high.

We need new players who are good at baseball. It’s really that simple. Catchers, pitchers, who cares? If Z hits on these draft picks it won’t matter who’s in front of them. They will have value and he’ll get something for them, either on the field or in a trade.

Last year someone commented about how it’s too bad for these older vets, by hanging around all these years their reputation is being tarnished by being part of so many terrible SF Giant teams since 2014. And I think that’s true. It sucks but it’s true. In ten years when I hear the names “Crawford” and “Belt” will they not ring as sweetly as when I hear the names “Lincecum” or “Renteria” or “Zito” or…”Huff?”

Think about it. A lot goes into those names.

A+ Pick

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 11, 2020

I’m all over the Pat Bailey pick. This isn’t the NFL where you draft for immediate need. This guy was the best available player on the draft board. They took him. Last year they drafted almost entirely hitters and they did that because it was obvious our system was limp with bats. If Z and his talent scouts say this guy can hit then I’m standing behind them.

Billy Beane always said you can’t have enough catchers. Z carried that philosophy with him to LA and he’s clearly focused on that in now in SF, too.

I’m not that worried about this perceived need for pitching. The way the game is going towards openers and piggy backers and whatnot Z probably thinks he can find pitching on the free agent market. And you know what? He probably can. Pitchers are cool with coming to SF, hitters aren’t. So you draft hitters and sign pitchers.

It’s actually a brilliant approach and one I’ve hoped they would take for many, many years now…..

MLB draft starts today. The Giants have 7 picks in the first 5 rounds….

Today’s Guess the Flapper is a little different. This is a picture from a 1976 Little League yearbook. In the photo there is an extremely famous former SF Giant. Name the player and identify where he is in the pic….

Guess The Flapper, The Town and The Year

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 9, 2020

Ok, so for starters this is an absolutely abominable picture if we’re just talking about guessing the Flapper. I don’t know how anyone gets this. Besides that this picture is great, let’s dive into an analysis…..

Now, the uniform might not have had the Patrician elegancy of a Sunset Magazine sponsored team. Few did. But look closer! Left index finger gamely pulled out of glove. Workman-like sweatshirt rolled up to the elbow. Grizzled color line meandering down the pant leg morphing perfectly into stirrups the way they should always have been worn. Plebeian roots, maybe, but a young lad born with moxie and verve. Whoever was unfortunate enough to be standing in the batters box just struck out…..

The Best Game of All Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 7, 2020

Well, if I had my way I’d spend all day trying to get people to contribute to worthy gofundme accounts. Sadly, it is time we move on. I don’t know how long Chi is going to keep it up and I encourage anyone who hasn’t already done so to please contribute. Now for something completely different:

It’s a Guess who this Flapper is Contest! You get nothing but personal satisfaction if you get it right. No more goddamn computer giveaways. That was a Twin thing and most recently a Chi thing. From here on out, everyone buys their own fucking computers. lqtm. Full disclosure (and a hint I guess) only one of these guys is a Flapper. The other one is his brother.

Now, I literally just came up with this game while I was posting the picture. I think this will be a fun thing going forward and since we have no baseball let’s keep it going. If you have any pics of yourself as a kid, preferably playing baseball, send them to me with, obviously, your Flap handle so I will know the correct answer. We could do this for weeks, come on let’s go, email me!

A while back I sent in some online feedback to one of Trump’s automated email surveys. When it asked for my name I put in Fuck You. So now when I get emails from them it just says “Fuck, President Trump” to start the letter. It’s hilarious.

When you get to the part of the survey to rate his performance these are the options lol. Safe to say that good ol’ Fuck You has been rating him *other*

Do The Right Thing

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 5, 2020

Back in August of 2016 a great injustice was done. Neither rake nor hoe nor cleverly pointed finger was enough of a hint to a couple of idiot federal pilots to fly their little birdie elsewhere. So, stronger measures were taken. I’m not here to discuss the choices made that day–some good, some, eh, not so good. All I know is that 4 years of a Flapper’s life was taken from him. And it should have never happened….

Now that Stix has been released from the hoosgow he needs help in getting back on his feet. The AMAZING Chipower has set up a gofundme to help him buy a new laptop so he can continue writing a book and I might not know much but I know this: Stix was born to do at least 3 things in life. 1) find shit in the woods to whittle into incredible pieces of art 2) create some of the most amazing dishes a kitchen has ever seen 3) ….write words.

We are living in terrible times right now. Later today, my daughter and I will be marching with my fellow community members to bring attention to a very real injustice: unwarranted police brutality. The truth is, I don’t know how much these protests are really going to matter in the end. When they die down, we are likely going to be living with the same injustices. I’m not going to tell that to Katie. Right now I am just enjoying her unbridled passion.  Anyway, while we might not be able to change the world today you absolutely can change one person’s life RIGHT NOW.

Click on the link below. Give what you can. Someone’s gonna be the one to push this over $1000 today. Why not have it be you?

Accepting No Baseball in 2020

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 4, 2020

Totally prepared and ready for no baseball this year. 50 games is a joke, if they try to trot that shit out I can’t support that. I kinda see where the owners are coming from. If they’re going to make most of their dough from the post season tv revenue and there is a legit risk of another round of Covid shutting the sport down again, I can at least see the pause for concern.

We’ve already accepted no sports into our lives. We can all get through this, it just sucks.

Why Play?

I read this and it got me to thinking, why wouldn’t anyone get surgery right now? For anything? Tune up, major, just get it done.

And if you were in the last year of your contract there’s no way you play in a 50 game season, right? The risk of injury for not a lot of $$$ would be too great. Just sit it out and get paid in the off season.

Am I missing something here? Mookie Betts would just say “screw it” right? He’s got no allegiance to LA, no reason to diddle around for 50 games. Hell, he could just say his knee hurts or something and get out of playing that way….

Baseball Is Striking Itself Out

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 28, 2020

I posted Scherzer’s comment last night about the grid lock on the negotiations for baseball re-starting. It was a sad and discouraging post. It took longer to hit me than it did for others but I’m now starting to think we aren’t getting baseball this year. This sucks, this is a game that COULD happen right now with the right precautions. Hell, they are playing baseball ALL OVER THE WORLD right now.

But these guys couldn’t put it together.

Gonna be staring out that window a lot longer this year.

How Dumb Are the A’s?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 27, 2020

If you want to alienate your fan base AND disillusion the future in your organization the Oakland A’s have nailed the exacta cold. They refused to pay their rent at the O.Co and now they are cutting off the young players in their organization by stopping their weekly stipends. I could kind of see the A’s cutting off the day to day staff that work for them. They don’t care about parking lot attendants or food vendors. But come on man, these are your freaking players! This is your future!

If I owned the A’s (and was worth 2 billy) not only would I not think twice about keeping their glorified food stamps of $400 a week coming but I would hire each of them a nutritionist to go to their house every day and make sure they’re eating properly. Hell, provide the food and a chef too. When we finally come out of quarantine you’d think they would want their players properly fueled up. Abandoning them and basically turning them into homeless people seems like a suboptimal way to build a successful program……

An Open Letter To A Flap Legend

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 24, 2020

Stix. If you can read this, let me provide a status report:

Twinfan is dead. Sabean dethroned. The team is on life support. The day after you disappeared the Giants lost 10 of their next 14 games. They did manage to squeak into the post season in 2016 but the result was a complete bullpen meltdown the likes of which none of us have ever seen. The Cubs advanced. We have not yet recovered. In 2017 we lost 98 games. The last 2 seasons, 174 losses. Absolutely staggering totals. All the players you once knew are gone. Except Posey, Crawford and Belt. They will never leave. Life sentences, my man. Fucking life.

Now that you’re caught up, I have some questions…..

I recognize you probably can’t talk about your case so I won’t ask about that.

  1. What were you doing the day this all went down? Right up until the moment those commie bastards attacked by aircraft. Spare no detail.
  2. What happened to your property and your pussy cats?
  3. How much actual ass fucking goes on in prison?
  4. What was your first post-prison meal? Alternatively, what was the first thing you did after your escape?
  5. What is your plan now?

My man, we missed you. We thought about you. As the years passed on we re-posted some of your most epic posts as a vigil in the hopes that you would one day make a glorious return. I honestly never thought we’d hear from you again and while I know you can read this I fear there is still a chance we may never hear from you again.

But I hope I’m wrong.

Flap Nation always stood #StixStrong. And we will remain so. Now there’s nothing left to do but……

Bummer Time Blues

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 23, 2020

The weekend known as the beginning of Summer is here! And yet, it is missing a few things. Before writing this thread I brushed up on where we are with baseball re-starting and it just doesn’t seem to be happening–and the paramount issue is money, not health. The players are using the health issue to hide behind the bigger issue which is they want as much money as they can get. And I don’t really hold that against them, the owners aren’t going to be giving anything away for free.

But the clock is ticking. Even if an agreement was in place today the teams still has to take a head count on who can actually even get here as I’m assuming travel into the US is going to be  a challenge. And then there are the players who will refuse to play and you know there’s a group like that out there.

Then I missed some things. Admittedly I haven’t been pouring over the comments lately. I thought I read something about one of the Chuck’s finding out that he’s no longer listed as a prisoner. What else has been found to indicate he is “alive and well?”

What comes back first? Stix or baseball?

Also, I was sifting through some old photos that I’ve posted here before and found this one. Good times.

The “We’re Not Gonna Get It” Crowd

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 21, 2020

As you might expect from a largely dim group, there seems to be a backlash from the players with many wanting to see an easing of the restrictions at the facilities they play should they resume the game again. Here’s the espn link (in tiny url form because I respect you just like when I wear a mask in the grocery store):

https://tinyurl.com/yb5fh2qk

Their argument is that if they all test negative every day why do they have to change out the balls so often or why can’t they use the facilities. Or spit. That one is not going to fly, let me tell you. Those dudes spit as they breath.

This line was interesting: “The toughest thing will be relying on the younger players to really contain their social circles to just teammates and immediate family,” one agent said. “Containing that circle of people is probably the most important part of the plan to make it work.”

That’s just like the spitting problem. You aren’t going to stop the parade of whores going in and out of those hotel rooms. You just aren’t.

Oakland A-ow ’bout I get you Later?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 20, 2020

I know there are other things to worry about in the world but the Oakland A’s not paying their rent is one of the most astounding and outrageous *bad looks* I’ve seen in a while. To me, this is just as bad as the Lakers taking 4.6 million in small business stimulus funding.

Oakland will probably pay up now because it went public.

Exciting Delivery During Lockdown

As I wander through the wilderness searching for blog content I happened upon an unsolicited letter from Sir Diggity Dig of DigDawg Town. Here were the contents:

Screenshot 2020-05-15 at 6.45.07 AM

Now, the first thing you’ll notice is that the germ-x bottle is covering one of the cards. I promised Diggity I wouldn’t reveal the identity of that one for a few days (kind of our version of that incredibly terrible show The Masked Singer). But that reveal is coming and it’ll be more content so you should be happy I’m spreading this over two threads.

The second thing I noticed is that Ed Halicki looks like a young Zumiee.

Third thing: the Gary Thomasson card was, I think, the first baseball card I ever owned.

Three Thrill’s and a Phil Nastu?

And when you guys see who the Germ-X is covering (by the way, what’s up with the 99.99% of germs killed? Why not a hundo?) you will all appreciate this collection as much as I did.

Pay This Man His Money

The call came out this morning from my main man in Reno, Pa Salon: “Where is the new content?” Sadly, just like the challenges the largest porn companies in LA are facing, even Big Flavor is having trouble producing content in this new Caronavirus troubled world. But, this is from Tampa Bay:

Screenshot 2020-05-14 at 6.43.57 AM

His argument is pretty flawed. He basis it mostly on it not being “worth it” to play for half of the 7 million he’s due this season. I appreciate his concern over getting “the rona” and his “bro” to article ratio is off the charts. But it doesn’t really make sense to me that there’s no way he’d play for 3.5 but he would for 7 mil. I mean, you seem deathly afraid of getting this shit, How is 3.5 more mil going to sway you?

Here’s the entire article if you want to bro-out and read it.

The *Worst* Saturday In May

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 2, 2020

For this first time in my life I wake up to nothing but a regular old first Saturday in May. Today, of course, was supposed to be The Derby. They stupidly moved it to September when everyone was panicking. Here’s why they shouldn’t have moved it: Yes, some tracks have shut down. But several tracks have continued racing during the pandemic and not a single case of Covid19 has popped up at any of the tracks still running. Horse racing COULD have had the attention of the world today being the only sport still active. Imagine all the new fans they would have gotten– handle has been through the roof at Oaklawn, Tampa Bay Downs, Los Alamitos and any other track that’s still running–record breaking handle.

Oaklawn has put together an outstanding card today and I’m excited about that.

But this day is supposed to be about so much more. I’m so bummed….

Re-Starting The World

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 1, 2020

Just to be crystal clear I understand how dangerous the threat of Covid 19 is to the entire world. I completely support and commend everyone in the country for sacrificing their various levels of freedom and livelihood to flatten the curve of this virus. So when I share pictures like this one, I’m not doing it to suggest some type of conspiracy theory. I just think there is an additional story to be told other than the one we hear from CNN and other news organization all day long.

Screenshot 2020-05-01 at 7.58.44 AM

This is a pic I took on my run through Stanford campus yesterday. It’s a make shift testing center that popped up about a month ago across the street from Stanford Stadium–there are 3 other tents to the left you can’t see. This is where the line of cars would be if there was anyone lined up for testing (the nurse greeting would-be testees is in the red shirt near the middle right of the photo). And this isn’t a one-off, the most I’ve ever seen at this location is 2 cars in line.

Yesterday I noted that there was 1 patient in the Stanford ICU suffering from caronavirus and today I posted this pic. Mostly, I’m just looking for some new relevant content in this new sports-free world we’re living in. But I am definitely now on the side of beginning to re-open parts of the country with safe practices still in place. That doesn’t make me a Trump supporter or like one of those lunatics who stormed the Michigan state house. I just don’t think it’s realistic for the entire country to hide in their houses for the next several months when we could be getting back out there cautiously and safely….

The Molina Brothers

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 30, 2020

I just read that Yadier Molina wants to play “several more years.” He’s 38. That got me to wondering about Big Titty’s age and I guessed he was 50. This is what the pandemic has turned me into. He’s only 45. Then I clicked on ‘Titty’s stats and it really is incredible that in his final, underwhelming season in his painfully average career he ended up playing for BOTH the teams that made it to the World Series. That’s a pretty cool thing to be able to tell your grand kids.

What Will The Players Do?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 29, 2020

We have all read a lot about the possibility of re-opening and/or re-starting the various sports leagues. But one thing I haven’t seen are actual polls done by their respective player unions. Do we have an accurate idea of how many players will actually agree to go back and play? Or do we have to wait for a firm plan and then they vote? What percentage need to sign off on it for this to be a go? We’ve heard from a few random players interviewed by ESPN or Yahoo but will their be enough players who will vote yes agreeing to play their sport in the middle of a pandemic? And will there be some who just say “I’m not doing it.”

The imaginary dance between Puig and the Giants continues. This is from mlbtraderumors.com:

“For what it’s worth, it wasn’t long ago that the Giants reportedly showed interest in Puig, who has a couple important connections in San Francisco. Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler were both members of the Dodgers organization during at least part of Puig’s run with the Giants’ archrivals from 2013-18.”

I’m not sure knowing Z and Kapler constitutes *important connections*. He’s been in the league for 7 years I’m sure he knows a lot of people in the game.

But, I will say, at least Z and Kap don’t hate Puig the way we know the Giants old management regime did. Actually, that’s a guess, maybe they hate him more, almost everyone in the Dodgers org hated Puig when he was there.

Still, Kap does appreciate a nice male physique and Puig certainly fits that bill. I’d like to think Zaidi only appreciates the shape of a number and isn’t swayed by the look or personality of other humans. So these are the two best arguments I can come up with for why the Giants might now want to sign Puig. Also, Bum is gone.

There is still zero evidence that Puig would want to come to SF. It’s a million miles away from Miami, it’s also not a team that’s even close to something the mainstream media would be covering on the basis that we stink (and 98% of Puig’s existence is getting people to look at him). It’s also not a park conducive to hitting home runs, besides the peak of his biceps, that’s all he cares about.

So, it’s never been a fit and it’s not one now. I’ve gotten to the point where I look at the Giants and they’ve been so boring for so many years I wouldn’t fall apart if Puig was signed. It would at least be a little interesting to watch his antics.

But as a baseball player he’s always been overrated, he’s death to clubhouse chemistry, and now that he’s on the wrong side of his career curve he would contribute nothing to the team in terms of wins.

If you want to take a look at what an empty .800 OPS looks like see what Puke did with Cleveland last season in 207 plate appearances:

2 bombs, 25 runs scored, 23 RBI’s, fucking worthless. But hey, shiny .800 OPS!!!!

Who Is Watching The Last Dance?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 27, 2020

It’s on ESPN right? I actually haven’t turned my tv on in a couple of weeks. Honestly, what is there on tv that I can’t get from my lap top? Well, besides The Last Dance.

Is it good? Why should I watch this?

Stalwart Staley Retires

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 26, 2020

Least controversial take of the day: This was a great draft.

Screenshot 2020-04-26 at 6.48.40 AM

Everyone is praising Staley for telling the Niners about his plans to retire and I guess that was admirable of him because it allowed them to form a back up plan and trade for Williams. But am I crazy? If he told them a day earlier they could have just drafted Wirfs.

We are now back to no sports but that was fun while it lasted, eh?

Niners!

I’m completely passed my negativity phase from Day 1 of draft day and I’m in full blown *wait and see but nervously excited* mode. It’s impossible to hear Kinlaw’s life story and not be happy for him. And while I do have a bias against the Pac 12 because it’s so weak compared to actual powerhouse conferences I am willing to trust Shanny on this Five Lettered Fellow and hope for the best.

Today is still legit, you can get a real player or two on Day 3 if you mine the right nugget.

Got an email from Chi–he said today is the 6 year anniversary of a Flapalooza. It’s possible this is the one we found out about Unca’s daughter dating Diggity’s son.

Ayucky Pick

Rice, Moss, Carter, Owens, Largent, Monk…..Aiyuk?
Our newest Niner name doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue when you think of great wide receiver names. Am I the only one who thinks his name needs more letters?

Look, in the age of Covid it’s easy to be negative. And I got there very quickly after round 1 of the NFL draft.

I am not an NFL expert. I have no idea if Jeudy, Lamb or Jefferson will become an NFL star. But there is a great likelihood that one of them will. And I don’t think there’s anyone out there who thought Aiyuck would go as early as 25 nor is there anyone out there who thought the Pac 12 was a powerhouse conference. So not only did we trade up for probably no reason but we passed on 3 other dudes who all might be better than him.

And this Kinlaw thing, sure he’s cheaper and younger than Buckner. But there is no guarantee he’ll be even close to as good. We already had Buckner. If this was the plan why didn’t we just keep Buckner and ditch Armstead? Pay up for the quality you already HAD.

Whatevs, maybe it all works out. I was certainly wrong about the Bosa pick. But I was right about the Solly Thomas pick. I guess we’ll find out about these 2 new fellas if the NFL ever opens up again…..

Here’s something to be positive about: Some time over the next 24 hours The Flap will pass 2 million all time hits. Congrats, that is an enormous feat that Flappers around the globe should feel good about.

NFL Draft Time!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 23, 2020

Jesus Christ, ok, let’s GO! Something sports related that’s not the Outlaw Golf Tour or horse racing. Like it or not, we get to watch Roger Goddell in his jammies announce the NFL draft from his basement. I, for one, can’t wait.

I read an interesting, easy to understand article this morning about the economy. Interested in your take, should you have one:

If you’re interested in baseball news this was just penned by the commissioner, it was set for immediate release and contains critical information. lulz

Grocery Store Poll

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 22, 2020

What do your grocery stores look like? I stopped going to Trader Joe’s, the lines are too long. And you weren’t going to catch me in a COSTCO or a WALLMART before the pandemic hit, certainly not now.

I either go to the Safeway in Los Altos or Menlo Park (depending on whether I need to go into work) or the Piazza’s in Palo Alto. I would say 90% of the shoppers are wearing masks, maybe 50% are wearing gloves. I’ve recently been struck by all the designer masks everyone is using. I still just use a red or blue bandana depending on which gang I’m looking to rep.

Random thought of the day: Captain and Tenille, Donny and Marie, Sonny and Cher…..you don’t see terrible duet singing couples anymore. That seems like it was just a 70’s phenomenon, aye? And why was it popular then?

The New World Awaits

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 21, 2020

Just finished reading a very depressing NY Times article from Sunday detailing the long road we have ahead. I’m going to do what most everyone else is going to do when it comes to treatment or a vaccine: I’m going to sit and wait. And wait. And wait.

The other stuff, sports, our old way of life, etc seems further away today. We just haven’t come to grips yet on how quickly our world has changed and how some things are just never coming back. As Americans start to grasp this we are going to see bigger protests and very likely anarchy oozing out all over the country.

The highly esteemed and honorable Pa Salon just sent me Season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm and it is H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S.

Jeudy Time

This is concerning if they are trading down for MORE picks.

Screenshot 2020-04-20 at 6.56.12 AM

If they get ballsy and trade up I’d be down with that. The Niners have a good core they are returning nearly everyone. They need an impact offensive player, preferably a stud wide receiver. They have drafted pretty terribly at that position over the years since Rice. Who could forget JJ Stokes. Later it was AJ Jenkins. And most recently Dante Pettis. And I’m calling bust on Pettis now unless he was dealing with some major under the radar injury. That dude was so far into Kyle’s doghouse and you know he must suck considering the WR’s Kyle ran out there last season. But we need to hit on a stud and we need to do it this year while the window is still open.

We have 2 first round picks. If I had to I’d trade both of them to the Raiders to get to Jeudy and then get back a couple of the Raiders 3rd round picks (they have 3 this year). Who’s with me on that one?

New Game!

Try to figure out who the SF Giant player was included with these guys in the trade (hint, he was the main piece in the trade) and who was he traded FOR (as in, who did we get in return). Second hint: the guy we got we were very happy with.

Screenshot 2020-04-19 at 8.27.55 AM

You are allowed to check your work. If you think you know who it is go ahead and check baseball ref. But obviously this is an honor system game. I probably should be including the name of the SF player here. But I think that might make it too easy. The player we traded and the player we got from Atlanta are both very recognizable SF Giant names.

Ok, go, two flaps up to the first guy who gets it…..
