Tyler Beede, Come on Down!
As all of you have heard, the Giants drafted Tyler Beede (RHP) out of Vanderbilt yesterday. Rather than give you his stats, here’s an interview he did with a hot Vandy girl. The free style rap at the end is pretty epic.

Well, I’m sure most have seen the low-down on the kid. Big kid, throws hard, but has had command/control issues. Hoping the Giants can make the adjustments with him to get some consistency in him motion/delivery. Garcia the C who they took in the 2nd round sounds like a masher who needs work on the defensive aspect of receiving. The draft is always a crap-shoot…let’s hope these two make hay sooner rather than later.
Cain back on the bump tonight. Will be interesting to see who gets the boot. I asked the question last thread, and zumiee was hopeful it is Huff. I wouldn’t argue with that move. I would prefer to keep the bench as is for now.
I’m just hoping that pointing to SaltNPeppa, SirMixAlot and Vanilla Ice as inspiration is a joke.
Though Rap may have originated somewhere around 198th Street in Harlem, it does sound kinda silly when a kid with no visible African genes takes on some of the argot which is pretty much specific to those with that heritage. Hey, for inspiration i can dig it. But Tyler does need to discover his own style.
On the catcher Garcia, KNBR had John Barr, the Giants draft guy on. He says they took him because he was the best player left in the draft at that point, and you can never have too many catchers in the system. Ok, fine. But, maybe the Giants thinking down the road of Posey switching out of C after a few years?…
I was thinking that too but between Sanchez, Susac and now Garcia I guess that catchers and pitchers are what the front office views as the best commodities. I have read that Garcia projects well with the bat so maybe he ends up at a new position. 3b?
Catchers, shortstops and pitchers always tend to be the positions most in demand and fewest in supply ~ at least the premium ones. Seems like we got pretty good trade value from Philly for a highly rated catcher from our pipeline a couple years back.

I am so out of the loop on rap…cannot comment on any of them. Whateva. All I care about is can the kid pitch. Anything else is gravy…especially if he brings the hotty with him.
Yeah, I don’t think there was a plan in taking Garcia (where he fits down the road, etc.). I have read on a couple of occasions that the Giant’s brain trust regulary goes with “best available” when drafting.
I can’t really argue with that idea of “best available” when the MLB draft is a crapshoot, and if a guy does develop, you can use him with your big club or for trade bait. I still would like to see them draft an outfielder that actually turns out…
Speaking of catchers, I looked up how Tommy Joseph is doing, he’s the main Giants farm guy in the Hunter Pence acquisition. Unfortunately, the kid has had tons of concussion issues since the trade, and barely played last year. This season as of end April, he’d suffered another concussion after getting hit by a foul tip. I don’t recall seeing this much concussion concern going on in earlier years. Did these catchers just get concussions, and played through it like NFL players? I doubt if there are more foul tips now compared to earlier history in the game. The article on Joseph said they may have to make him change positions, because his bat has such good potential…
Too bad. You hate to hear these types of stories (unless it involves a bum, of course). Just kidding. And I agree…would love to see the Giants draft and develop a kick-ass OFer, but knowing Sabes, Tidrow, and Evan’s MO, I am NOT holding my breath.

Chunky type. Looks more to be the prototypical catcher or third baseman build than the ranginess one expects in outfielders. The plus arm might make a difference, though. As a prospective reliever he is built
somewhat along the lines of Roger Clemens, who unlike the vast majority of hurlers, drew his power from his legs, ass and lower torso.
Beede done with 2 on and 2 out in the top of the 5th after 105 pitches — and what was once at 10-0 Vandy lead is now 10-6. The kid looks like he has good stuff, but yes, there are definitely control issues.
snarkk – there is your OF pick (Dylan Davis). While from the report he isn’t going to be an elite OFer, it sounds like he could be pretty decent with some pop. And as the report says, if that doesn’t work out, he could potentially be a reliever (lower 90s fastball that can touch 97-98).

As are most of these draftees, he looks like a crapshoot. Looks a little pudgy. At least they took an OF in a top round, and he’s got some pop…

Well like Wilco mentioned, Bedde comes from a solid school ( Vandy) with Price,Minor, and Alvarez in the Bigs and producing so time will tell.

There’s 40 rounds of the draft? After about 25, why not call it a draft and then go with signing guys as free agents? Would that really drive up the price of whoever’s left undrafted?…
And when did the NBA cut it down to 2 rounds? It used to be 10 rounds . . . didn’t it?
Never know when your gonna strike gold in a draft, even Albert Pujios was a 13 the rounder pick #402 by the Cards in 1999…

Back in the ’80s, I attended a business conference at the Opryland convention center in Nashville. While there, I saw a notice that Robert Penn Warren was giving a reading at Vanderbilt (“All the King’s Men” was one of my fav classics). It was great to see/hear him before he died not too long after. But I do also remember the beauties in attendance in the Vandy auditorium. Loads of them. That interviewer is pretty fly for a white girl… 🙂

But just reading all this stuff, I don’t get why he’s catching so much shit for this. Yeah, the other players didn’t cramp up, but so what? He’s less of “the man” because he got bad cramps? With one noticeable exception, SPs have been good to excellent lately, and pen solid. Giants have enough pop to win the torture games. Screw small ball, Earl Weaver rules!
Wonderful to see Cainer pick it up again after his hiatus. Commanding performance except for those two hard hits in the 7th. Deserved the W but Niese was pretty tough in his own right. One inning victory for Affeldt on his 35th birthday. If big Matt couldn’t get it Affeldt earned his proper present.
Not sure what LeBron/coaching staff did to stay hydrated etc. and I don’t know much about nutrition/diet kinesiology, but being the only guy carried off the floor is a bad look. Duncan did sit and so did other spurs, whose biggest problem was all the turnovers, not the 4th Q crunch time. spurs played 2 quarters plus OT vs. Thunder without tony parker and won on the road to get to the finals.
Rashad McCants story written up briefly on cbs, that came out of *outside the lines* story, on how he skated his way to Dean’s list while not going to class at Carolina is just another case of chickens coming home to roost. I’m not saying all guys do this, but it’s obvious if this is the road you want to take to stay eligible and play, it’s open and free of obstacles. How can anyone blame the one and dones who know the school and coaches don’t give a flying F about them, and want to go and make the money for themselves?
Interesting that roy basically says he didn’t know about it, which likely means he’s been successfully given enough layers of cover (like mafia dons) to avoid any hint of responsibility.
