Bob Welch
I was saddened to hear about the passing of Bob Welch. I always like him and that’s surprising since he played his entire career for the Dodgers and A’s. The 27 games he won in 1990 is burned into my brain for some reason. It seemed like a lot then and it’s almost inconceivable in today’s game. And it came in his 13th major league season. He never really did anything after that magical Cy Young year. Four seasons of mediocrity with his career finally ending in 1994.
Cause of death wasn’t announced, that’s usually not a very good sign. Ha, I guess any “cause of death” isn’t a good sign.
Anyway, sad.
A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball 
I was at a Giant/Dodger game when Welch pitched a 6-0 shut-out against the Giants. It seemed like he was always tough on the Giants.
He passed away way too young. Very sad news.

Snarkk, regarding Pagan, the collision was in the play where Pagan went first to home on Pence’s double. The Mets catcher was blocking the plate with his shin-guard when Pagan slid across homeplate. This is precisely a question that was raised before the season: if the catcher blocks the plate with his shin-guard, what is the runner allowed to do? The rules seem to say that the runner can’t go all “Scott Cousins” on the catcher if the catcher is doing that. But it sets the runner up to be injured. I really wish they had just outlawed all blocking of the plate. It would save such needless injuries. The Giants were deprived of Pagan for a couple of games because of a loophole in the rules.
Pagan hit his shin on the catcher’s shin-guard.
Also, I’m not sure the Mets catcher even had the ball yet when he blocked the plate, which is illegal under the new rules. The Giants didn’t protest, because they scored; but still, MLB should review plays later and fine guys for that, or suspend them for a game. Put some teeth into rules like that.
OK, I remember the play more for the run from first to home than for the slide. I heard the play, I don’t think I saw the highlight of it. Sounds like Pagan would play if it were a September stretch game…
The article said he was available last night off the bench. I don’t have a problem with a player taking an extra day due to a ding like this if they need it…
Didn’t know about Welch until now. I remember him well and yeah, that 27 game win season was pretty epic and came at an unexpected point in his career. Anyone around 45-50 who follows baseball remembers this guy. RIP.
I still trip on Denny McLain winning 31 games in a season. There is a rare baseball card/memorabilia shop down here not far from my home. I was just there with a buddy a couple of days ago. They’ve got some great signed 8 x 10 glossies that I always check out. I damn near bought a McLain one the other day where he had signed it and written “31-6” on there. Plus, he’s got a cool leg kick depicted in the picture. $20. I dig it when you have guys like Welch and McLain, who aren’t Hall-of-Famers, yet have put together some all-time-great seasons.
It’s now being reported Welch died of a heart attack at home; age 57.
I am with Flavor – for some odd reason, I always admired Welch. Sad news. RIP.

In case anyone cares (maybe only me), the “other Bob Welch” passed away a couple of years ago, at age 66.

Sad news about Welch. As Zumie mentioned, e always seemed to beat the Giants — sure enough, he had a 19-4 career record vs. SF. Funny thing about the clip above: Everyone remembers Welch striking out Reggie in Game 2, but in Game 6, Reggie got his revenge and took Welch deep to put the game out of reach in the Series-clinching victory.
19-4? Shit. Yeah, he was always nails vs thre Giants. Never liked him as he did always seem to kick our ass, but at least he wasn’t a smug bastard like the rest of ’em.

Some cool remembrances about Welch. Didn’t like him either, but mostly because he was on 2 of my least favorite teams. Regardless, those were games, this is real life . . . RIP Bob.
I’m doing last minute checks on my Fan Duel starting line up and I am flabbergasted that Tito has Chisenhall batting 7th for Cleveland after his epic evening yesterday. Makes less sense because he isn’t doing the “left right” batting order you see many managers doing. Dumb in my opinion.
Fister is a tough nut to crack. Consequently, we will have our hands full this evening. I’m still shaking my head about Detroit letting him go. Brain dead move, especially in lieu of Verlander . . . umm, posing as some guy named Verlander.

Random observations from both Bob Welch videos:
-The first cut Reggie takes is absolutely awesome.
-Is it me, or does Stevie Nicks sound a bit out of key on her vocals?
-Did you notice the fan run onto the mound and damn near grope Ron Cey? Cey’s “what the fuck is that guy doing?” reaction is hilarious. God I hated Ron Cey. …and I know I’m preaching to the choir on that one.
-I LOVE how Ebony Eyes ends with a solo.
-That knockdown pitch from Welch on pitch 2 was no fucking joke. That looked like 98mph gas right at Reggie’s chin.

-I agree Dodger Bob Welch has a cool vibe about him. Love his love key reaction to striking out Reggie.

Stevie Nicks sounds like shit in that song, and she blows the lyrics as well . . . and I much preferred the Fleetwood Mac minus Stevie and the other chick. This is one of my all time favorite FM tunes (this version AND the Judas Priest versions).
Yeah, they were a blues/rock band back then. They gradually started moving in a more pop/rock direction after Green left. There are aspects of all renditions of the band that I like, but especially like the Peter Green era (my love for the blues showing through).

Cool song. I like all the various versions of Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and Lindsay Buckingham definitely changed the direction of the band after Welch and Green left. The “new” Mac wasn’t as critically applauded, but they sold a gazillion records, and remain a very beloved band by a lot of people.
Not sure anyone posted on it, but Machado has been suspended for five games for his bat-throwing incident the other day. Fucker deserves to be taken out back and shot IMO.
I saw that and also that the O’s were considering demoting him. While unlikely, that would be pretty funny.

IMO, this suspension seems about 5 games too light.
But, I heard somewhere today on radio that Campy got 7 games suspension for throwing his bat at Larrin LaGrow back in the early ’70s playoffs, that one actually fluttered over LaGrow’s head…
Bowie Kuhn wimped out a bit, though, in that Campy was allowed to finish the playoffs, and win a World Series, and didn’t have to serve his suspension until the start of the next regular season.
That game, and that moment where Campy flung the bat, is one of my earliest memories of watching baseball on TV. I would have been 7 at the time, still living in San Luis Obispo.
Execution was totally tongue in cheek, but I think 5 games is a bit light. I think 10 would be much more appropriate.

Dodge Ball was my absolute favorite game and per this column (quite funny), he has it at # 2. Bullshit! Dodge ball was the greatest school yard game ever invented. I was also shocked that school districts are banning it because they feel people are getting hurt; and it perpetuates bullying. Pansies . . . 🙂

All you have to do is watch the movie Dodge Ball and you know it was a great game. Bullying?? seriously? in my time the kids who didn’t like it just didn’t dodge the ball got hit right away and sat down.

I liked dodgeball big time. Hell, we used to laugh when we got hit in the head or butt with the ball, then we’d go sit out and watch the game til it ended. Nobody sat out, even the boys that were not athletes (yeah, we used to call ’em spaz’s, how unPC, now they probably run a tech company). I liked kickball better. “Baby bouncies”, baby. I had a strong foot. There were two or three of us who could kick the sucker, if nailed just right, high and long enough to go onto the roof of the school building from homeplate of the asphalt playground where the kickball diamond was painted. Loved that “home run”, and seeing the ball come bouncing down off the roof…
Again…totally kidding about shooting the guy. My favorite was kick-ball. Basically set-up to play like baseball, but you kicked the big rubber ball.
Oddly, or perhaps, of course, my favorite Fleetwood Mac album, “Kiln House,” doesn’t feature Peter Green, Bob Welch, or Lindsay Buckingham. “Station Man” has a nice, lazy hippie groove, on top of which an unlikely Stones-like riff eventually shows up, and then the guitar solos could just go on forever.

Unrelated to sports, but some Tea Partier (dude named Brat . . . great name) is about to upset Eric Cantor, who is numero 2 in the House Of Representatives. Cantor has aspirations about being House Speaker. Pfffttt! Not going to happen. Couldn’t happen to a better guy and I love how the Repubtards are similar to Hyenas that eat their young. 😉
I won’t go much into a political rant here, but Cantor is a low down putz. There’s a video out there of him at a “town hall” in his district a few years ago where a woman says she’s got cancer, lost her health insurance, has gone bankrupt paying med bills and is about to lose her house and will lose her cancer care and says the system is totally messed up, what are you doing about this — and he responds with something like “well, there are probably some charities that can help you”. Unfortunately, the yutz that beat him is worse from what I’ve seen. Cantor will land on his feet making oodles of dough as a “thinker” at a reichwing think tank for a year while the lobbyist waiting period goes by, then when that year is done he’ll probably become a K street whore, uh, lobbyist for the guys that financed his campaigns…

Some of you guys probably remember Frank Dill on KNBR way before it was a sports station. When the Rumours album came out in ’77, Frank had such a hard on for Stevie Nicks he’d play “Dreams” about twice an hour. Went on for MONTHs. I got sick of that song because of that. Anyway, he and Mike Cleary were a hoot on the am show. They used to interview Don Nelson once a week during the Warriors season, that 10 minutes was far better than listening/watching one of the games. One time Nellie was on the phone out walking his dog or dogs, and Frank asked him what the dogs were doing. Nellie said something like “well, Goldie just took a huge dump on somebody’s lawn”. Hilarious…
I grew up listening to Frank and Mike…The interviews with Nellie were legendary…I used to have the biggest crush on Camy Blackstone, when she was the traffic girl…That was until I finally saw what she looked like.

There was some good news in the Giants organization last night: Stratton pitched well in the San Jose Giants game. He was the first round pick in 2012, of course; I’d forgotten his minor league progress got sidetracked for a while because he got hit in the head by a line drive during batting practice a couple of years ago.

I’m still bummed about Bob Welch dying. I know people die all the time but when ballplayers from my youth go it’s weirder, harder. And he’s not even a contemporary, he was a dozen years older than me. Shooter and me are much closer in age and for some reason Welch dying today hit me harder than Beck. Or the dude from Hoosiers who died, take your pick. 🙂
