Surprised we don’t see Rowand tonight…….

I’m busy with a bunch of stuff tonight but if anyone mentions “Renteria” in this thread you are getting the comment deleted. I’m done with this. And I’m done with the paranoia about “who is posting as who”. Talk about the game and the team or you’re all free to post at the Splash. If you mush use language, head back over to the dead-blog and post till the cows come home. I really don’t give a shit……

The last couple threads were enough for me.

Flavor, you cut off the last thread just as I was posting. So to kick this one off, here is a repeat with not a word about the shortstop on rehab assignment at Fresno.

I only became aware of the Splash blog around mid-season last year. It seemed to be a battle of the Gs fans vs the rest of the world, better defined as Dogger and A’s fans, as best I could determine.

The A’s have an A’s Drumbeat, but there is no activity there so it is utterly benign. And does the LA Times not have a blog of their own for like-minded Dogger fans to comingle? Don’t people like to hang with those who mostly see the world in somewhat the same way?

It is so completely amusing to drop into the Splash now and then to watch that battle again and again, night after night. I don’t fully understand how it began and how it evolved. A link to a Splash blog retrospective would be interesting to me.

The end of that kind of confuses me, Flav. If mush is a typo for must, I’m still not sure I understand. Anyway, I was kind of surprised we’re not seeing Rowand tonight as well. Burrell’s doing well but I just had a gut feeling the Giants would have felt they rested Rowand enough by now

  4. DaddyO's avatar DaddyO said, on June 14, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Ted, I don’t see it that Rowand is getting rest. I see it that his role is getting redefined. We shall see what effect this has in the clubhouse.

From the last thread, sorry twin, I disagree. I think a .300 BA, 10 HR’s, 33 RBI and solid and versatile defense is good on June 14th, especially given the park he plays half his games in. Huff has been an excellent pickup for Sabean and the G’s. Nobody is saying he’s the second coming of Stretch, but he has been good.

Maybe this has all been said, debated, rebutted, and rebooted in this space, but the gestalt (may I use that word here?) of this team has really changed in the last several days. It remains to be seen how permanent it is and with what results, but clearly Rowand is a bench player now and Huff is an outfielder and the lineup is in flux. One can speculate whether these are “message” moves or temporary calibrations to fit situations, but I cannot recall a time when Bochy has been so daring, if that is not too daring a word. I salute him. And having actually seen the team a few times recently (very rare for me), I have these observations:

    — Freddy S. has been a real important part of a revived offense
    — Bengie looks lost defensively and offensively
    — Posey is becoming a commendable first baseman, even though he looks all of 14
    — Uribe is the key
    — What, oh what, happens if DeRosa comes back? I don’t know where I’d put him or if I want him.

You can say all of this is self-evident, but, um, “we hold these truths to be self-evident,” as somebody in Philly once wrote (not regarding Mike Schmidt, ether).

  11. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:09 pm

I was referring to his defense, JBat. He is average or slightly below. Maybe I wasn’t clear, his offense has been a revelation, especially at ATT…

  12. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Make that either, not ether. We already have enough laughing gas.

Magnus, regarding your previous thread on MadBum, I ain’t yet a Strasburgian-type believer in MadBum, not on anything I’ve seen. Can’t ‘splain it, just ain’t feeling the vibes for him, tho’ he can hit.

  17. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Bumgarner isn’t Stasburg? According to the media, Strasburg is already in the HOF. Nobody is Strasburg. All Bumgarner is is one of the 2 or 3 OTHER top rated pitching prospects. Bottom feeder scum, in other words. You people are fucking brutal.

  18. Craig's avatar Craig said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:45 pm

If madbum turns out to be a reliable 3 that’d be great. Anything more, greater.

  19. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:45 pm

No need to fret, Pawlie. Giants seem in no big hurry to get Madison up here anyway. Take all the time you need to get the right vibes going. There was talk this morning about Strasburg going to the All-Star game already. Really? I guess so, why not? The “game” and I use that term very loosely is for the fans anyway. If they want to see him, let him go.

  20. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Yeah, dennis, Ray Ratto wrote that. By the way, is it true or just an exagerrated joke that Baumgarner is or was hitting .400? I mean, I know he can hit but .400?

  21. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Twin, you are right that Stras has been anointed to immortality a wee bit prematurely, and I’ve been guilty of same. As I’ve said here before — and I may be off a bit — but it summons a sportswriter’s take on Clint Hartung in the Fifties: “The kid should skip the formality of a career and go straight to Cooperstown.” (Right. Clint who?) And yet. And yet, I won’t flip-flop on my saying from the first of four (now) times I’ve seen him in person, Strasburg’s got the goods to be very special, as Curt Schilling said in his benediction. Stras will lose games, get pounded, lose confidence, etc., but I still think he will be very good very quickly and quite consistently. I am not saying anyone else is scum; I am merely judging from my narrow and biased and tiny perspective of guys I’ve been privileged to see in person (including Bumgarner and Sandoval) before they were in the Majors. A small sampling. Mere speculation. Mere opinion. But no apologies for such utterly human opinions.

  22. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:52 pm

“There was talk this morning about Strasburg going to the All-Star game already.”
That was Ratto, wasn’t it? Figures. That would be a travesty. It’s time for SF fans to get off their smug asses and vote Uribe and/or Torres in instead of talking about this Nat kid. Pablo should have been in last year and as I showed in the Fangraph link, Torres is actually deserving of one of the one of the starting spots in the OF ( based on performance, not rep) . Before Flavor goes postal, the other two are his guy Willingham and Heyward…

  23. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:54 pm

BTW, I’d love to hear from anyone who saw Tim Lincecum when HE was in the minors. Did you feel: he’s got it, bring him up, this is special? (As for crowd-inducing excitement, I recall seeing Mark Fidrych. Is he alive? Man, he was fun. And pretty good. I went out of my way to see him when I lived in NJ to see him pitch during a weeknight in Yankee Stadium. Guidry vs. Fidrych. 40,000+ with almost all of it walkup sales, including moi.)

  24. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on June 14, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Stras simply does not have enough starts for all-star consideration; that is plain silly and hysterical. This is from me! When Fidrych was in the all-star game, 1976, he was something like 7-0. Yes, I’m all for getting Torres and Uribe in. But I wish they went back to a weighted system of voting that included players, managers, coaches, sportswriters, paramours, or whatever it was before all ballot-box-stuffing fans.

  25. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 14, 2010 at 7:02 pm

    Pawlie, didn’t see him but: 31 IP 12 H 11 BB 46 K 0.29 ERA before he came up.
    Strasburg: 33 IP 18 H 7 BB 38 K 1.08 ERA
    Big Edge: Tim

  26. pickledgringo's avatar pickledgringo said, on June 14, 2010 at 7:08 pm

You guys actually watch the ‘all-star’ game? I use that 3 day break as one of my in-season benders. I’d probably watch it and care even a little if the players that deserved to be there were there. They should rename it to the fans-choice/Torre game where it matters less what you do, but how you look doing it.

  27. pickledgringo's avatar pickledgringo said, on June 14, 2010 at 7:10 pm

And I’ll take our Timmy and the 2 CYs over Strasburg any day. Let’s see his numbers/results after 2 years and then judge how he compares…

  28. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 14, 2010 at 7:13 pm

I haven’t read Ratto yet, this was talk on KNBR this morning. The “game” has become a gigantic farce anyways. They have to select (horseshit rule) a National anyways, why not the kid. I could give a shit. Whatever brings in the best rating is what rules the world. If he wins a few more starts, I’d bet he’d “warrant” a selection in their eyes. Again, don’t give a shit. Bud should be drawn and quartered for making a mockery of that once great showcase. Now? Who gives a shit. You hope the Giants are real represented, when deserved, and that’s about all you can hope for any more.

This team actually resembles a competitive MLB team with Molina and Rowand sitting on the bench. I almost never hand out kudos to Bochy but gotta give him this….he’s appearing to finally come around. Love them both for what they have done, but they just aren’t starters any more.

Holy shit! I must say I’m surprised by Huff in RF, Burrell in LF. No Bengie (I know, Whitey/Sanchez) OR Rowand. Torres should be busy . . . Huff seems to be decent where they put him, but Burrell the other day looked like he was lugging a piano going back on a ball. He CAUGHT it, but it looked like slow motion.

IF DeRosa comes back, he’s an OFer.

He’s not supposed to do this. But I bought him on all my pay teams weeks ago: of course I issued the mea culpa on him before purchasing him…

    Twin,
Thanks for the pre-MLB breakdown on Tim v. Stras. Very intriguing. And clearly Timmy did not get as much hype, which is all well and good, probably better. His recent loss of confidence is totally normal. As I read it, Mays ALWAYS needed reassurance his whole career. Anyway, signing off. I’ll follow the game a little, write some attempts at humor for the Wash Post Style Invitational *, and then read and go to bed.

    * I got some Style Invitational ink Saturday; had to come up with fake clues for a filled-in crossword. For the filled-in line ICANRELATE they used my “Incestuous pickup line” clue.

Ted – Sorry I was out for a bit, went to see a musical called Rent (kidding BF, just kidding) .
I think Martinez is on a short leash (maybe not the best term), because the brass has seen him before (as I recall he pitched well until a team saw him for the second time) and, ultimately the Giants do want Bum up.
Three lefties in the rotation, all the staff except Zito, a Sabes pick AND they want to win this year while showcasing the studliest staff in the majors.
At least thats what I’m thinking.

  54. pickledgringo's avatar pickledgringo said, on June 14, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I give you that, Nate didn’t seize it, but what could you expect when you’re named the starter until the first game of the season only to be replaced for 1 game by Bowker, and then Bowker gets sat for Torres the very next game? If Bowker earned it, why in the hell was he given exactly one game to show it was his spot (and he hit a homer to boot)? It’s a paradox for sure.

It’s not in Bochy’s nature to support young players and never has been. We’re fucking lucky Burrell was available and wanted to come here. I wanted him last year (along with Huff).
