A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Today’s Thread–Mad Bum. When? If?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 14, 2010

I understood why the Giants didn’t start Bumgarner in Cincinnati. It was on the road in a notorious hitters park. I get it. But I am not understanding why he’s not starting against the punchless Orioles at home tomorrow. Iron Head Joe instead? He’ll probably do fine. But this would seem to me to be the perfect opportunity to usher in MadBum to the 5 spot, a spot he could lock down for the rest of the season. I guess my question is, if not Tuesday against the worst team in baseball at home….then….when?

From the previous thread, just wanted to give Mike Benjamin his due.

This date in baseball, 1995: Mike Benjamin went 6-for-7 setting a major league record with 14 hits in three games, and drove in the winning run in the 13th as our Giants beat the Cubbies 4-3.

    Where is he now?

I’m surprised this topic didn’t get more love on the last thread. Seriously, why isn’t MadBum starting at home against the worst team in the AL? When will there be a BETTER situation? If they aren’t going to start him just get him in as our long reliever. Who knows? Set up guy?

exactly. It’s funny, i don’t think it really would have mattered who he faced, he’s other worldly. But Mad Bum? I’d set it up so that he gets the absolute highest chance for success his first time out this year…..

On this one I think it is the arbitration clock. Probably don’t want to deal with Bum and Posey going to arb at the same time. I figure Joe has a couple of games to make his case as a number five or Bum will get the call.

  12. JBat's avatar JBat said, on June 14, 2010 at 12:49 pm

My guess is the Giants want Bum to get back from his suspension, have a solid start or two, then bring him up.

  13. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 14, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Twin touched on it previously, that they’re punishing Bum for his outburst. They’ll never admit it of course, but it makes NO sense to punish your entire team by keeping him down. This isn’t the Vienna Boys Choir, just bring him the fuck up and be done with it. Like you said, Flav, if not now, then when? This organization can really piss me off sometimes with their decision making or lack thereof, and this is one of them.

  16. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 14, 2010 at 12:55 pm

punishing him is fucking totally stupid, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the reason. The kid showed some fire, good for him. He got kicked out of a game, lots of players do. If he’d shown a history or a pattern of not being able to manage his emotions then I’d bust him for that by not letting him start. But this guy shows some emotion, for once, and then they punish him for that? Idiotic. he was already “punished” with a suspension and and a fine. It’s the first time he’s ever been in trouble down there. Move on from it……

  17. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 14, 2010 at 12:58 pm

twin alluded to the possibility that Bumgarner started that game pissed already because he knew it meant he wasn’t getting called up to take Wellemeyer’s scheduled start

Mychael Urban reports the G’s are going to run more tests on DeRosa and not yet make any decisions. Jesus, they really are praying for miracle with this one. I mean, we already have Jesus Christ on the squad, if he hasn’t healed his wrist by now, it’s not gonna happen.

    Double super secret probation

  21. ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on June 14, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Martinez (Joe) when speaking on Bum’s suspension says the kid has “fire in his belly,” and said it is a good thing. He also said that Madison doesn’t let anyone push him around. The kid has the make-up you want in a ML pitcher.

I think all that has been mentioned may have been the reason why he got pissed (knowing he wasn’t getting the call, Velez dropping that can of corn, not getting the call on the pick-off).

I agree…there isn’t a better time to start him, but I think Clown may be onto the reason why he isn’t getting the call, now.

I am ready to see the kid up, NOW. Giddy up…and Go Giants!

An injured Giant whose name will remain unknown begins his rehab start in Fresno tonight.

  22. ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on June 14, 2010 at 1:11 pm

    Thanks for the link, DelMar.

The final sentence sums up the “why” on additional tests:

“DeRosa is said to be eager to have his wrist surgically repaired as soon as possible, but he and the Giants want to see if the numbness is related to the ruptured tendon sheath in the wrist before committing.”

This makes absolute sense to me. He already knows the surgery on the wrist sheath was a bust, and knows it needs surgery. BUT, if the numbness is related to a different issue (neurological, etc.), then the wrist sheath surgery will not address the numbness. He and the team want to make absolutely sure that whatever steps are taken, that they address every aspect of his inury (wrist sheath and numbness).

  23. Max808's avatar Max808 said, on June 14, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Well, the company line as I understood it re: Bum’s 2010 debut, is the G’s don’t give one whit who he’s facing; they simply didn’t have someone to option (and they didn’t want to DFA Wellemeyer) to make room for him in Cinn. That’s why they didn’t call up Martinez either.

They feel since he had his debut last yr, it’s not that big a deal.

After the injury to Wells, they had a spot and they needed bullpen help. So, Martinez was the guy who could be used in relief. Now that he’s here, they feel it makes sense for him to start, rather than make another roster move.

  24. Max808's avatar Max808 said, on June 14, 2010 at 1:20 pm

As for punishing him, I think that’s nonsense. I’m sure the outburst was welcomed in some quarters.
What they obviously didn’t like seeing was him losing his focus and giving up 5 runs in an inning.

  37. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 14, 2010 at 2:39 pm

A three day suspension for a starting pitcher is meaningless, and Bumgarner’s probably a millionaire from his signing bonus, so the fine is basically meaningless; so what could the Giants do if they really wanted to get his attention? Skip him on Tuesday.
But you know- it IS quite possible that the Giants feel that Iron Head is pitching very well these days, and gives them a great chance to win that game.
And we’ll probably never know if Bum’s tantrum cost him this start.

  45. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 3:37 pm

You said it Kat. Sabean’s had his share of failed signings, but this offseason was pretty good. Huff, Uribe, Sanchez, and then there was DeRosa. But hey, 3 for 4 is a lot better than most GMs. I almost forgot Bengie. I could have done without him, but our best pitchers really do like throwing to him, so he still has value there, and his bat’s starting to look better.

I hate to live in the past, but the sad thing about Uribe is that he should’ve been starting at SS most of last year too. Whether it was because of the bon chips in his elbo or not, Rent had a horrible season. But because Rent was making $9M to Uribe’s $1M, Rent got the nod. If Uribe was in there, we would’ve been much closer to the playoffs.

  51. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:14 pm

I just checked. Renteria had more plate appearences (510) then Uribe (432) last year so that’s about, on average, only 8+ more games

  52. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:17 pm

TF- My memory is not clouded. I was preacing this last year too. Even though Uribe’s OPS was .190 higher than Rent’s, he had 78 fewer plate appearances. At the very least, the PAs should have been reversed, but becasue Rent had the bigger contract, he got more playing time.

  53. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:20 pm

How does 78 more PAs equate to 8 games? That would be almost 10 per game. And my point is that 510 PAs was too many for a gimpy Rent to begin with. I was happy to see him swinging the bat so much better this season before he got hurt. But as for last year, and if he’s gimpy again now, he should be a bench player.

3 bag: you are being IMMENSELY dense, Uribe had 3B and 2B to play also. You can blame Burriss, Ishikawa, Garko, Aurilia, Velez, and Frandsen just as easily as Renteria. You and Kat are both full of shit on this.

  68. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I just happened to read Baggs first. I kinda like Pablo down in the lineup for a little bit right now. The walks yesterday were great, bu the next step is to le him really get his legs under him and start driving the ball consistently. Let’s see a few more extra base hits and the OPS start to rise along with his confidence, and then move him back to 3.

  69. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:41 pm

And it is not a question of who the *SS* should be: that is OBVIOUSLY Renteria. The question is how to keep both in the LU as much as possible.

No, I can blame Rent because I would have also rather seen Burris playing short (before he got hurt) with Uribe at second. Renteria couldn’t hit or throw last year. He should have been DLed. Better yet, he should have never been signed, but once he was he shouldn’t have taken away playing time from others playing better. It was his contract that kept him in the LU, the same way Winn’s did too.

  73. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:47 pm

OK TF, so if it’s so obvious Rent is the starting SS, how do you do that while keeping Uribe and all the other guys who’ve been more productive in the LU?

  74. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:49 pm

I could have sworn that the Rent thing was over, You could go to Vegas, Reno, whereever and put your house payment down that Rent will start when available. The best possible situation is Rent at SS, Uribe 3rd, Pablo 1B, and Posey behind the dish. That is the best possible scenario, but it is up to Bochy as to where and when who will play.

  75. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 14, 2010 at 4:52 pm

If Rent can hit the way he did earlier this year, when he was healthy, I’d agree with that Kevin. But the fact is Bochy’s not ready to sit Molina more than maybe a couple starts a week. As long as Cain’s on a roll and Lincecum is still rebounding, Molina catches all their starts.
