A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Line Up…..Game Time Approacheth

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 15, 2010

Torres CF
Sanchez 2B
Huff RF
Uribe SS
Burrell LF
Posey 1B
Sandoval 3B
Molina C
Martinez SP

Compare it to a line up in the first weeks of the season and look at the changes:

1) Torres in at leadoff/Rowand out (literally, he seems bolted to the bench now, I like it)

2) Franchez hitting 2nd

3) Burrell playing and hitting well

4) Posey playing and doing his thing

5) Molina down to the 8 spot

If you just take the first 4 changes and realize that 50% of our line up has turned over, for the better, since the beginning of the season it’s obvious why we’re hitting so much better……

Here is the rating for “clutchiness”, ( best to worst). I haven’t added Whitey, Travis, Burrell, or Posey, not enough AB.
The figure is number of AB with RISP per RBI. Lower is better, in other words, Freddy gets one RBI per 2.29 AB w/RISP.
    Sanchez 2.29
    Renteria 2.64
    Uribe 2.72
    Rowand 3.18
    Huff 3.77
    Torres 3.87
    Molina 4.38
    Sandoval 4.73
    Schierholtz 5.29

This is informational, not an editorial, so don’t fuck with me on it.

Don’t show that stat to Bochy, informationally speaking. He’ll put Rohand back as an everyday starter…

I’m gonna fuck with you you on this, twin. See, the way I see it…that is, if you were to ask me…I’m just gonna say…fuck it. I got nothing.

Bochy should be commended for finally breaking free of his addiction to Rowand. Molina is next on the chopping block with Renteria coming back. Benjie is gonna need a bunch of hits this week or he and Rowand can keep score next to each other on the bench…..

I hope Iron Joe gets a good ration of grounders goin tonite. But, I still don’t really get why he’s here. This was a perfect situation for Bum to be called up, home park plus a bad opponent, and it’s totally legit because of Welly’s DL. Maybe they want to see if Martinez can take the long relief role more dependably that Bautista, and/or from Welly when they do bring up Bum….

  6. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 15, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I don’t think there’s a shred of doubt that Molina will lose ABs when Rent gets back. And none of this has anything to do with Bochy changing. He has not changed. The players he has to plug in have changed.

I heard some crap thrown around on KNBR today that Pat the Bat was not known as a particularly good clubhouse guy in Philly and Tampa. Have no idea about that, he seems light a righteous dude on the interviews. But, so far, I don’t care if he’s friggin Mr. Hyde, I’ll take his ABs and production…

  8. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 15, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Snarkk– there is the theory going around about this being an additional punishment for Bumgarner. That’s dumb. He didn’t do anything wrong. He got pissed off about being tossed and reacted. It’s not like he went “Milton Bradley” on anyone. I’m glad he got mad, who wants a pussy who gets thrown out and sheepishly retreats to the bench?
Seriously, was this THAT bad? What’s the lesson they’re trying to impart? And whatever it is, is it worth scaring him off from future public emotion? Is it worth a loss tonight (assuming he would have pitched better than Iron head)?
    Here’s the clip:

  9. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm

He’s pitching tonight in Fresno. He’ll be here soon enough, hopefully he and Joe will both stay up then.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm

BF, I find the punishment theory hard to believe. Plenty of guys in the minors have gone ape once or twice. I haven’t heard/seen anything that Bum is a head case in the making and needs some kind of lesson. I agree, I like some fire in the belly. I choose to think it’s just timing and/or making sure Martinez might be the guy to take over for Bautista after his flame out in Cincy. Thing is, with a mean stretch of opponents coming up, seems unlikely they’d bring Bum up in the middle of that…

  11. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Tonight’s game against this one game successful rookie pitcher is a test. Were it a month ago, the Giants likely would have failed. With the new lineup arrangement (&personnel) we will get some idea as to whether the team has turned that particular corner.

  12. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Bumgarner brought up for the Houston opener. that might be interesting

  13. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:08 pm

I don’t think how we do tonight indicates a corner turned. The fact is, since they did all four of the thing on my “list” in the main thread the team has hit better. Sure, Baltimore sucks. But any team can shut you down on a given night. It’s impossible to argue that an early season line up is within a country mile of this current one……

  14. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:11 pm

I don’t think he’d get punished for an outburst per se as much as if the outburst was precipitated by reaction to Velezes’ error. If that was the case, as I’ve pointed out, it was bush league and warranted punishment. That’s “if”….
Stix:the rook COULD be good, too. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything much at all if they don’t hit him…

  15. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Shit, Bumm’s what, 20? Not every kid coming up has the demeanor of Matt Cain.

Don’t really know the deal with Bumm. You’d think he’d be the guy to fill the Wellemeyer spot. Are they really going to plug Wellie back in when he’s off the DL in a couple starts and move Joe to the long relief role?

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 15, 2010 at 7:14 pm

To me, the thing that Burrell, Franchez and Posey have brought to the table is not just hitting and production, its better ABs than Rohand and Molina. Those three set a good example of what taking a smart AB is about. Add in Huff continuing to do that, and Rent when he gets in there, and all of a sudden you’ve got 5 dudes out of 8 that take pretty good ABs. Add Torress at the top with his solid OBP now, and you’ve got a LU that’s not handing outs to the opponent…

Temptation pitches. Without video here i can only speculate, but when both Uribe and Posey fly and line out to deep center it’s telling me that this rook must be hitting the outside third or quarter of the plate and somehow they look fat enough that Giants hitters are trying to pull it. Maybe some more measured swings would result in liners to the opposite field and maybe some doubles and triples.

Martinez missed a ‘statistical’ quality start by one run over. Eight hits and only one walk over 6+ is not a bad performance. Too bad for him he was matched up with a kid pitcher that the hitters could not solve. No book on him.

Joe may well have what it takes to be a serviceable long-man. No worse than Wellemeyer most likely. Most important thing about his appearance is that he did not give up the big inning plus he only surrendered that one BB.
