A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Orioles Can’t Lose EVERY Game.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 16, 2010

Everyone saw the same thing last night, we hit bullets at people, they hit balls in between or by our guys. That’s baseball, we are on the other end of games like that all the time.

For the people freaking out about Lasorda sitting next to Neukom:  He’s there as a representative of Milken’s group that raises a TON of $$$ for prostate cancer research. They go around all Summer from stadium to stadium doing the same thing: Milken gets his half inning in the booth, Lasorda hangs out in the owners box. I swear to God, who could possibly be AGAINST raising money for cancer research? If you’re going to spaz out about Lasorda could you get equally burned up about Milken being invited into the booth for a half inning? Or do you support a guy who was convicted of racketeering and fraud? These two guys are spending their personal time raising billions of dollars for cancer research, Lasorda can come back and coach the goddamn team if the money they raise helps us find a cure for cancer. Jesus…..

agree flav! btw u are right about lasorda…but it was in bad form when the showed him with nek and the split screen was when he was still managing and showed him on the field waving at giants fans…just the screen with him and nek and maybe a note about his raising $ etc., would have been better.

if you weren’t at the game in person, that homer pablo hit was a blast, pat the bat is huge, torres’ nab in the first amazing and posey, the new man…what an at bat in the 9th! sitting 2 rows back of home to the giants dugout side and hit fouled off fast ball/off speed/fastball w/o missing a beat, where pat the bat swung through!

Hard to bicker about Andres as POTG but I think I’d go with Martinez. A couple of the runs were really unearned due to some shoddy play by Buster , and I’d guess 4 or 5 of the hits were seeing eye grounders. Good job..
    Loved Bochy’s description of Joe’s night: “buzzard’s luck… “

Good opening post Flav . . . Not too many people know that Milken was diagnosed with Prostate cancer and wasn’t expected to survive it, i.e., he was given approx. 2 years to live back in 1993. However, through multiple types of treatment, the cancer has disappeared from his body. This is the reason he founded the Prostate Cancer Foundation for prostate cancer research.

Anywho, if you check his Wikepedia bio, there is this funny “cultural reference” to him:

In the episode “Future Stock” of the television show Futurama the main character Fry meets Steve Castle, also known as “That Guy” in a Cryogenic Support Group. That Guy stands up, introduces himself to the support group and says, “Back in the 1980’s I was the toast of Wall Street. I was having whiskey with Boesky and cookies with Milken. But then, I was diagnosed with terminal boneitis…. There was no cure at the time. One drug company was close but I arranged a hostile takeover and sold off all the assets. Made a cool hundred mil. Naturally I froze myself until a cure was found. Now here I am, ready to sleaze my way back to the top, 80’s style!”.

Yes, Lasorda will go down in that pantheon of guys SF fans love to hate, but those walks onto to the field at the Stick from RF clubhouse to vis dugout were classic. He knew what was coming and didn’t hide from it, while fans gave it everything they had short of getting ejected, and everybody got their money’s worth….baseball and SF-LA rivalry at its finest.

Now that the guy is actually doing something charitable with his time and gets to go the park and talk baseball and re-connect with people, more power to him.

I agree WillieD. Loved the Bum – Giant games, and Lasorda taking the long, slow stroll to the visiting dugout…blowing kisses to all the loving Giant fans. Classic stuff, a great part of a classic rivalry.

Blade – I remember that episode of Futurama…fucking classic. LMAO.

    Contest update – 9 wins, 66 runs, 16 bombs. Projection: 17 wins, 127 runs, 31 bombs.

GH – Relax, if it comes down to you and me and tie-breaks, I’m gonna kick your ass.

If Neukom and Lasorda sat together for the tv cameras chatting during a Giants-Dodgers game (and of course that won’t happen), then we’d have a problem. Last night, as part of a mlb-related fund-raising effort to fight prostate cancer? Got your attention, didn’t it. Smart PR move for a good cause.

Just the other day, I was looking at a securities fraud case from the early 90s — Miller v. The New American High Income Fund. People from Milken’s firm, Drexel Burnham et al, had formed the New American mutual fund solely to have it buy Drexel-related junk bonds. The fund lied about its investment strategy (promised to diversify, etc.) and duped the public into investing. The fund tanked in 89 when the junk bond market tanked. The Court ruled that the mutual fund had lied and defrauded people into buying its shares, but the class action nonetheless couldn’t go forward because the plaintiffs hadn’t alleged that the fund’s lies caused their loss — the collapse of the market had. The plaintiffs said, but we wouldn’t have bought the shitty mutual fund shares in the first place without the fraud! The court said, not enough. Sorry.

Same sort of thing will happen this time around. Head honchos will get some jail time, but investors won’t get much money back. Sorry.

I guess this Dodger hate thing depends on who you hang with. With my group, it was a pretend deal, maybe because my friends have always been folks who, you know, have clues… we’d boo Tommy and heckle the Bums, heck, even “burly fan”, the guy who helped instigate Reggie Smith (coming into the stands), didn’t REALLY hate any of those guys. Only the truly and resolutely stupid folk really truly hate the Dodgers and their fans. These are dangerous people, really, the kind who can be roused to perilous levels of aggression by a charismatic screamer.

Kinda saw that one coming last night with that Arrieta kid, as per my pre-game caution. Jeremy Guthrie, today’s pitcher for the O’s is not a bad starter, but has been around for awhile so the team should get Timmy the Rs he needs. Of course, as many have pointed out time and again, baseball is a funny game and you never know for sure. Best news is that Timmy appears to be back on track, so the odds are in our favor.

Two of three from Toronto on the road? Matchups looking that way unless their rookie starter Leitch is another ringer. Morrow is only so-so. One to worry about is Shaun Marcum, one nasty customer from Missouri, matched up against Drrrty in game three. Only team to handle him quite well has been Tampa Bay. Their other fairly successful starter Cecil got roughed up by the Dagos of all people. Offense gets revved up again after last night’s at-em ball and with Timmy, Zito, Cain and Drrrrty going in the next four, SF should take three.

Martinez pitched just well enough last night that, considering the Brass will probably want to unveil Bumgarner at home, my expectation is that Ironhead Joe gets to start the first one at Houston. Madison gets the call for the third Boston game? That may depend on Martinez’ second start.

  13. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on June 16, 2010 at 9:40 am

Martinez pitched just ok.He gave up some cheap hits, that found holes, left one up that Jones crushed, and basically struggled with his control.Still watching him pitch,is a hell of alot easier on the eyes then watching Wellemeyer.I’m sure he earned another start in Houston.

My wife was raised in Studio City as and remains a die hard Dogears fan (yes, it’s a mixed marriage. :D). She loves the team with a passion. I hate the team and Lasorda only in a baseball sense. I wish them no physical harm. Do I wish the G’s would go 18-0 against them every year? Goddamn right.

Truth be told, Lasorda is a great ambassador to the game, and has done a lot to spread it’s popularity in his retirement years.

But as a Giants fan, I’ll never be able to let go of the animosity I have for the Dodgers, a feeling only exacerbated by the succes they’ve had over the years and the relative failures the Giants have had. it really sticks in my craw.

Been cruising the high Minors for the past several minutes. Besides Bumgarner help is available. Relief pitcher Steve Edlefsen, a fellow Minnesota Norskie who’s dad may have been my classmate, a couple grades ahead of Mike Sadek, is a 25 year-old having one helluva year for Fresno. Sporting a 1.16 ERA, the righthander has appeared in 23 games with 38 IPs, he’s given up only 28 hits and 13 walks, while striking out 32. Though he had Tommy John surgery back in ’05, he looks good to go. First Giants reliever to really bite it likely gets replaced by this kid.

Other than Edlefsen there is nobody among the Fresno RPs who strike a really strong chord with their performance to date, though some have had ML experience. At Richmond Tony Pena Jr. has fallen off a bit from his outstanding early season success, but still looks pretty fair with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a BB-K ratio of 11-34.

Most exciting player in the SF minors right now has to be long, tall Texan Brandon Belt at San Jose where he is overmatching the opposition in manner similar to one Kung Fu Panda a couple years back. At a mere 22, this 6’5″, 195 lb lefthanded swinging first baseman is definitely turning a few heads in the Cali League, though unlikely to remain there for long as the Flying Squirrels in Richmond do not have anybody special at First.

Belt has racked up some skyrocketing stats in the short stay with perennial first half champion San Jose. His 51 runs scored come with 25 doubles, a pair of triples, 8 dingers and 55 runs batted in. His OBP is a mere .509, coupled with a .633 SP and a .394 BA, for an San Jose Pandaesque OPS of 1.142. Anybody living within a couple hours drive of San Jose better take a drive down there when the lil’ Giants are in town. The Bashing Beanpole Belt won’t be around there for long.

Richmond could use an offensive kick in the ass. Tough E.L pitching has stifled the likes of Ford, Kieschnick, Gillaspie and Noonan to BAs in the .235 range or thereabouts. Brandon Crawford has managed an OBP of .340, while Thomas Neal, alone amongst those prospects is emerging into moderate respectability with a BA of .284; an OBP of .345 and a SP of .404. Getting to that level he has hit 16 doubles, 4 taters, scored 22 times and driven in 31 runs.

Among the tougher E.L. pitchers are a pair of Richmond starters. Daryl Maday has one of the better AA records with a sterling 2.02 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and 49 Ks vs 21 BBs. David Mixon has a superb BB-K ratio of 17-63 together with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.

A marginal prospect at Fresno, Tyler Graham of Charlie Russell high school in Great Falls, Montana is in his mid-20’s, plays the outfield, has a good turn of speed, has a very high OBP and BA, but almost no power. He might get a cup of coffee this fall, but at his age and with that shortage of pop, will be blocked by the likes of Aaron Rowand and Nate Schierholtz. On my personal depth chart i would rate him over Eugenio Velez who’s Fresno numbers do not match up with Graham’s.

All in all, Brandon Belt, age 22 and putting up outstanding numbers at San Jose, looks to be more of a prospect than Brett Pill at 1B, who himself is putting up pretty decent stats at Fresno. Belt should hit Richmond within weeks unless he unexpectedly slacks off considerably and soon. If the crossover is successful, Belt could be just what those position ‘prospects’ in Virginia need to get off their collective schneids and start smashing that horsehide. San Jose has seen em come and go and should do okay even without their budding young star who could easily get the callup to The Show in about 13 months time if he keeps up his current pace at the higher levels.

    Also last night: Bum 6 IP 8 H 2 ER 0 BB 1 K. And 1-3 at the plate.

Give props to Arrieta. He figured to be trouble after beating the Yanks last week. Maybe he’s someone the O’s can finally build a staff around, although that’s not easy to do in cozy Camden Yards. And Martinez deserved better.

No that doesn’t sum it up. Of course, now that the posts are gone you’ll say what you want to say to support your version. But you’ve completely mischaracterized how you picked and conducted the fight.

Personal points of view make posts interesting, but personalization goes too far, here. I don’t think most posters here are interested in joining a cult of personality. Most of us have our own views.

Last night my view was colored by cancer. I had just spent six hours in a hospital yesterday waiting to hear the surgeon say that the tumor he excised from a 12 year old kid appears totally benign and, although test results in one week, etc., etc., don’t worry. So the worst to come of it will be loss of an All Star season this summer. I then watched the game with the kid last night. Still groggy from the anesthetic, he mustered only a touch of the usually amusing mock Lasorda-hate when he saw the owners’-box shots on the tv. (The kid’s fine, well tended, and will recover completely.) Of course, while I was in the surgical units I saw a lot of other kids wheeled in and out. And their parents.

To a certain extent, in a hokey way, last night Neukom and Lasorda were demonstrating that the common good they had met publicly to pursue transcends other differences between people. Simple enough. (Good starting point for an argument in favor of universal health care, but I digress.) And Milken and Lasorda each was playing against his reputation, using his notoriety as contrast to the good work he’s trying to do. (So it appears, anyway.) I have no quarrel with that. More power to em. (Wonder if Lasorda is “hated” much in other stadiums? Milken probably is.)

So maybe some people didn’t get the point. Maybe some did but still felt moved to spout some mock-ugly mock hatred at Lasorda this morning. If those jokes weren’t funny, so what? BF’s initial post did a good job getting everyone up to speed. Let it ride.

After Merlin Olsen died he met St Peter at the pearly gates and St Peter says to him, “Merlin come with me. I want to show you the stadium we built and all the great players we have here.”
Merlin goes along to the most beautiful stadium he’s ever seen. There is a game going on and he starts picking out all the old greats playing on the field. Finally he sees that old number 16 is under center and he asks “Joe Montana? Did Joe die?”
St Peters chuckles and says “No, no, Joe didn’t die. That’s just God, sometimes he likes to pretend he’s Montana.”

BF’s thread starter is right on the mark. Milken and Tommy aren’t two of my favorites, and Milken was a scumbag in what he did to take people’s money. But, I can get behind anybody that’s helping to raise money for cancer research. And, be honest. Tommy is a guy we SF fans love to hate, “hate” being feigned. Walter Alston was a prig, you couldn’t “hate” a guy like that. But, Tommy, he played the part, and loved it, four letter words and all, along with the stars floating in and out of the LA locker room. The 70s and 80s Dodgers would not have been anything close to what they were without Tommy. And the dude can tell some funny stories, hands down. That’s part of baseball lore, and how it’s history gets passed along. He bridged the period between somewhat old time baseball and modern baseball. Baseball would surely be the poorer without having had him in it…

Can this creature Gringo even READ? Lasorda was here to join Neukom and the Giants in this effort.

  60. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 16, 2010 at 12:45 pm

At the same time, we should never see Lasorda fraternizing with any Giants exec in public…ever.

Honestly, I’m confused. Is this supposed to be humor? If so, fine. I just don’t think it’s all that funny. But if you’re serious…what the fuck are you talking about? These are baseball teams. Not rival gangs. Professional baseball teams. Not the Hatfields and McCoys. Professional baseball teams. Not Dracula and Van Helsing. Baseball teams. Not capone and Ness. Baseball teams.
    Okay. Done for now

My posts were deleted as well, and unlike Gringo, I have a right to be proud about what I post. This dumbfuck actually STILL writes that even in joining the common cause of raising funds for cancer research, Neukom should not “fraternize” with Lasorda.

‘My posts were deleted as well, and unlike Gringo, I have a right to be proud about what I post’ – correction…..YOU chose which posts to delete and which to keep.

Ironically you deleted the ones that didn’t serve your purpose.

Stix – very nice summation of the minors. Thanks for putting that together. I too have been checking out Belt regularly. Unfortunately, I probably won’t get down to see him in SJ before he is Richmond bound. Who does play 1st the most for Richmond. Their stat sheet doesn’t even list a 1st baseman (they have three DHs listed). (Oh, and by the way…FUCK THE DH.)

Snarkk summed up the whole Lasorda thing pretty accurately.

Fuck a bunch of hate and deleted posts. This place sure is much more enjoyable when the focus remains on the world’s greatest game…baseball.

Bottom of the 1st…time to score first and bury the O’s. Day off tomorrow, then off to Toronto to put a whoop-ass on the Jays.

    1-0 Jints! Huff-n-Puff…

I hope the little runt didn’t re-injure himself on that slide. I mean that in all sincerity this time.
    We need his little ass.

Totally unacceptable base running fuck up. Jesus H. Christ.

I’m sorry to say, but Panda seems to have his head up his ass a bit this season. That was a weird situation, but still, I thought passing up the runner in front of you was schoolyard stuff. Chalk it up to Sophomore Slump…

I often get excited when I get to first base and overrun it. I rarely get to third base with those girls.

Kelly and Uribe share in the blame for that. It wasn’t all on Pablo by any means.

Strange inning with that baserunning. Could have turned into a huge inning without the boneheadedness. But that aside, we are up two-zip with Timmy on the hill and one inning in the books.
