A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Ugly Game, Moving On, and Some Other Stuff…

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 24, 2010

Baggs posted some horrific Molina stats in his “post game notes” blog last night: he’s scored 1 run since May 16th (26 starts). That’s astounding…..
I also wanted to highlight a blog thread I put up last May 27th at the old blog:
http://oneflapdown77.blogspot.com/2010/05/roy-oswalt.html
It seems that close to a month later Baggs saw fit to post nearly the exact same thing with Bochy agreeing with me. Not sure what to make of that. I know, I know, I’m NEVER allowed to agree with Bochy although in this case he’s agreeing with me. The horror! Of course, here at The Flap, we’re always AT LEAST 3 weeks ahead of everyone else when it comes to kicking around a good baseball topic 🙂
This is really a huge game today. And I am worried that our guys might be looking past it with the big “Boston/Dodgers” home stand coming up. We HAVE to take 2 of 3 from these guys. It’s not life or death or *must win*, but this is a big game today….
by the way, I’m sure most of you recognize the POTG picture. Here’s that chick’s blog entry about that moment It’s long, but a cute story and nice insight into what a cool ass dude Torres is:

Well, Bochy only says he would prefer Oswalt or Berkman, not that they should pursue Oswalt. And Oswalt over Berkman is a no-brainer, imo.

Baggs hits on the problem with this proposed move.

“The problem with acquiring Oswalt is that the Astros are more interested in obtaining prospects than shedding his salary. ”

We debated this one. Who in our farm system would they covet and who are we willing to give up? They ain’t gonna be drooling over Pucetas and we ain’t going MAD Bum.

  2. Max808's avatar Max808 said, on June 24, 2010 at 7:39 am

A win today is BIG heading into a tough homestand and then that pitching busting 11 game swing on the road to COLO, MIL or WASH. No easy ones for Bum’s debut now.

I don’t want Oswalt or Berkman. They are not what we need.

I agree with max, I think all we have to trade are players on the bubble (Ishi,Nate,Bowker) that are mostly out of options or high salary guys not producing.
That starting five would be something though and Oswalt is used to low run support so that wouldn’t be a problem.
If the Stros would take Rowand (who would probably go nuts in that band box) and one of the above I’d do it. Just don’t see them doing it.

Glad I missed last night’s game (I had echoed Twin’s fears of Zito’s coming implosion), instead seeing a great rock/alt band Silversun Pickup…good loud rock show!

Got home in time to watch the Dodger implosion! Priceless…

I guess the question is do they bring up Bum to pitch against the Sox? All I hear about that idea on sports talk shows is that the Sox could beat him up and what would that do to him mentally. I also heard that the Sox tear up left handers. So who is pitching on Saturday??

  9. delmardennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 24, 2010 at 8:42 am

I went back and looked at my comment regarding the possible acquisition of Oswalt: “not gonna happen…shouldn’t concern ourselves…more worried the Bums get him.” I still believe that to be true due do the fact of what it will take in return. But hey, if Sabean can but a pretty bow and tie a yellow ribbon around a pile of shit and sell that as a bill of goods in exchange for Roy, count me first in line.

Regrading Bengie: Those numbers are horrific. Now way to sugarcoat it. Couple his offense production with his defensive demise, and it really should be a no brainer. However, as Kuip pointed out this morning. Bochy likes to give his vets more time “to find themselves.” He did think the transition is coming, be it ever so slowly. Said Bochy’s toughest job would be “selling it” to his pitchers that it’s time to move on. Convince them that Buster catching is best for all. Well, Bochy needs to go watch “Tin Men” with DeVito and Dreyfuss. Pick up a few pointers on why the Giants need some new aluminum-siding at the catcher position that goes by the name of Gerald “Buster” Posey. Sold!

Ubaldo gave up 6 earned in 5.2 last night. It would seem Boston can tear up righties as well. On any given day, they can all get torn up.

If you go back and look at the reactions on old blog, no one thought Oswalt coming to SF was going to work. I said it didn’t address the need of a bat; I don’t feel the need of a bat as much now, but he would make for a very expensive PS and would preclude ever acquiring a bat unless you dumped Cain, and let’s not go there. The Stros are trying to dump salary and wouldn’t be interested in Zito or Rowand or Rent.

At some point Posey and the SPs not named Zito are going to have to work with each other. Bochy just doesn’t seem interested in forcing him on Cain or Lincecum, and Sanchez is a difficult guy to C. I really don’t care much about offense from this position—it’s more about D and handling the pitchers, which also includes the pen guys, all of whom throw hard (except Romo) and can be very wild. There’s a lot more to figure out than “Benjie hasn’t scored in forever”. Not sure why Baggs brought that up….his D behind the plate might be more relevant to discuss, tho you certainly can’t diss his arm.

  14. ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on June 24, 2010 at 9:08 am

I don’t see the Giants being willing to offer what I suspect the Astros want in return for Oswalt, so I would be really surprised if it happened.

Kevin – Bochy was quoted as saying that Martinez would start on Saturday…unless he is used in relief over the next couple of days, at which point then MadBum would be considered.

What a crazy-assed match at Wimbledon. One for the ages…wish I could have seen the finish this morn.

So what team do you let Bum cut his teeth on?? I mean this is pro ball here, at any giving time a team can break out offensively. As we have seen with our very own Giants. I thought Bum would be brought up now since the arb thing is done.

  17. willied's avatar willied said, on June 24, 2010 at 9:20 am

Wandy R is no stiff even to he has a crummy W/L this season. The Stros might lose a 100 this year, but that still means they win 62 times. Like most other teams, if they get pitching, they are OK.

I hate Boston, including every team in major sport, and always have going back to watching Auerbach lighting up his cigars in Parquet floor Boston Garden. I’m sure the stands will feature a lot of their moronic fans that live here now, just like show up in Oakland. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the A’s of Stewart days kick Clemens and Boggs ass during that time. Vaunted offense mostly sucked when they came out here….see how they like hitting at ATT. Maybe for once East Coast media stay up and get a taste of what SF can do.

After watching last nights game I don’t know if the Giants were focused on the astros but instead looking ahead to the Dodgers series. As for boston, well I think the NL west division games are waaay more important and on the mind of the Giants. The blog mentioned that they really need a win today and I totally agree. The 11am start time is weird, but I got the next two days off so hopefully I can enjoy a day game for once and see a win.

Back in 2004, the Giants played the Red Sox in what was the first regular season meeting between the teams in like 100 years or something like that. My daughter and I went with a friend of her’s frim HS, Chris, and Chris’s dad. Chris’s family was originally from Boston, and his dad was a huge Sox fan.

We had bleacher seats (section 138). The place was fucking packed with Red Sox fans. Seriously, the mix was damned-near 50-50. Everywhere you looked there was a damned Sox fan.

The Giants got off to an early lead, and I don’t remember the details (wanted to forget them immediately), but Boston put on a power display in the mid-innings and ended-up beating the Giants something like 14-9. Memories of that game have always made me hate the Red Sox even more.

Don’t look now, but as the LaBumbinos have been in a tail-spin, the Rox continue to play steady ball (7-3 in their last 10), and are now tied with the Bums (1.5) behind us, and 4 back of Dago.

Yeah, Chi, I saw the last game of that series, and the Giants won that one. We stayed at the Hyatt at JH plaza there the night before, and I was blown away at how many red sox fans were at the hotel. Every fricking bar within a 2 mile radius was full of boston fans.

Crazy. Most of ’em were pretty cool, and had good things to say about the team and the stadium so I don’t hate ’em as much as some around here.

Postscript to this is, back in 2001, my wife and I were back east for a wedding and had the chance to go to a Red Sox/Yankee game. Scored some seats down the RF line for $40.00/pr. 5 mins before the game started. Cone was pitching for Boston. My wife was wearing her Giants sweatshirt, and I was wearing a Giants hat. Got a lot of “what the hell you doin here?” type looks, but the fans for the most part had nothing but good stuff to say about the Giants and SF. So, they’re a bunch of drunken yahoos, but they were fine the couple times I’ve seen them in force . . .

Did someone spike Bochy’s coffee this morning? Bottom of the lineup features Posey trying to find himself at 1B and at the dish, followed by Molina, Rowand and Cain. Are they trying to lose? I don’t give a shivering shit about L-R matchups for the most part, just wanna see the best team on the field, so WTF is Rowand doing replacing Torres? Only if Andres is hurt, would that make sense. RentMan had three hits but no runs or RBI’s, so he leads off. That should make Rowand a real happy camper.

Yes, Pablo had an 0fer last night, but it included at least one of his recently habitual atem balls. Sooner or later Bochy is gonna hafta bite the bullet and have Posey catch Cain and Timmy. Today might have been the proper occasion. Now its a matter of wait on that while also waiting on Bumgarner. Maybe we do win this game, but i don’t expect much production from the bottom 42% of the LU.

  32. delmardennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 24, 2010 at 10:16 am

Wandy R. is sporting a 1.71 WHIP and .317 BAA to go along with his 6+ ERA. Top four in our lineup have knocked him around but good in their career.

No excuses. Win the damn game.

Everytime there is a different LU you guys act like it’s permanent or a demotion has taken place, Andres is just getting a fucking day off. Rowand has swung well of late, including a smash that should have been ruled a hit last night. He is no longer a regular, be happy.

  34. delmardennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 24, 2010 at 10:26 am

As far as Bengie and those runs scored, why any fucking surprise? I’ve been pointing up the obvious for a couple years now: the lower in the battng order, the worse. He’s actually hit well the last couple weeks ( .321, .800+ OPS) but has scored just one run. One: he’s been pinch run for several times. Two: he’s been batting 7 and 8, with no one to drive him in if he does get on.
By FAR his best position inthe LU has been 6.

  39. willied's avatar willied said, on June 24, 2010 at 10:56 am

Rodriguez is a lefty….Torres could use a day off, Pablo has more trouble from that side, yadda yadda….Other than Nate (???) in the OF, there aren’t any options when Torres sits. Rowand hits 8th a lot lately, quite a comedown. It’s getaway day, anything can happen. Like Bochy said about Toronto, we got 2 well pitched games and lost them both, and won the day Sanchez struggled and left early.

Lead off is kind of an odd spot for a lot of guys–take a look sometime at who bats first for teams, and it’s a pretty strange collection. From yesterday: Marlon Byrd, J. Jaso (Tampa C), Gwynn Jr. (at .228), Rickie Weeks, H. Kendrick, Kelly Johnson, Jeter, Orlando Cabrera….Soriano used to do it a lot too. So’d Bobby bonds, who K’d 175 times once for SF as I remember.

Last year Wandy Rod (got to be a joke there somewhere) had an ERA of 3.02, WHIP of 1.24 and won 14 games for the Stros, not an easy thing to do. He’s been a pretty good pitcher last few years for them. Hope Cain out duels him.
