A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Heart Attack #2 Coming Up Today

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 26, 2010

I would have made Santiago Casilla the POTG but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. That inning was just too horrific. But what an AMAZING performance he gave last night. He had NO IDEA where the ball was going early on in that inning. How Bochy decided to stay with him vs V-Mart still remains an unknown to me. The only thing I can think of is that Mota wasn’t ready yet and he didn’t want to feed Runzler to him since he devours lefties. Somehow, someway, Casilla got out of that inning….
Wilson had a pretty run of the mill 9th, didn’t he? Did you catch the moment when Franchez approached him before he faced McDonald? He was giving him some kind of very direct encouragement, it almost looked like he was yelling at him. Then, when the game was over, the camera was panning underneath a walking Wilson in the line of high-fives and all of a sudden Wilson screams out “FUUUCCCKKKK!!!!!” right as Franchez approached him to high five him. Franchez froze for a second and then high fived him. Not sure if he screamed that out at that moment on purpose or if that was just a primal, random release of frustration. Go back and watch it if you have it DVR’d…..
I can’t wait for the game today. World Cup at a friend’s house and then we hit the game. No clue whatsoever on how Bumgarner is going to do today. Pedroia has got to be hobbled from that foul ball last night, he’ll either be out of the line up or worthless. In fact, s a team, Boston is dealing with a lot of injuries. The only guys Bum really has to worry about are V-Mart and Youk. If he can somehow avoid giving up bombs to those guys he might have a chance today. Either way, today is going to be E-F-U-C-K-I-N-G-L-E-C-T-R-I-C. Can’t wait…..

ZOOM, that’s great. We are sitting in the LF bleachers. I think we’ve got most of our row, lots of kids with us. I am going to try to get there early enough to video tape Bum in the pen but that could be tricky since I’ll have Katie with me and the slide and the cable car will be getting quite the workout. As usual, I will post pics on facebook while at the game. If I haven’t be-friended you already and you’re interested in seeing the pics, click on the link below, if I *know* you i’ll likely accept you…

Wow i’m still recovering from this game. Hard to believe,Boston could strand 3 runners in the 6th,3 in the 7th,2 in the 8th,and 3 more in the 9th!!!! That’s usually reserved for us.Effectively wild PS throughout the game with 10 Walks 3 WP’s .Casilla scared the crap out of us,but still managed 5 big outs. finishing up with a K.Wilson brought “scaring the crap out of us to unforeseen heights”, but wriggled out of it end the end.

One of the announcers mentioned that Santiago’s tenure with the A’s was marked by outings where he just had no clue. But holy smokes, that pitch to Martinez, unfuckinghittable. Even if you just bury him in a mop up role, I do not see how you give up on him.( shoot him, yes. When he walked Wakefield, Zeke had to get outta Dodge, my scream was like Wilson’s “FUUUCCCKKKK!!!!!”. And I didn’t seeMickey for an our and a half) What a wild inning…
Bad game for Whitey, his strike outs were pathetic -but that group last night had to be totally fucking brutal to catch. Props for getting out alive…
I’ll reiterate: good game to reward Nate and Travis with starts. You have to start them every one in awhile regardless. And both have had good at bats this week. Add that Huff had a rough night, and with the kid going defense could be huge…

Any chance we get your average run-of-the-mill 10-1 laugher today? Can’t handle any like last night again. No mas. No mas. That’s great you guys get to see the beginning of the Bumgarner-Buster era. Enjoy the game and bring us a winner Flav and Zum.

Any thoughts on the 9th inning shift Bochy used for the V-Mart AB? To be honest, with all the craziness that was and had ensued, I didn’t notice it util the ball was hit. A little over-managed strategy if ya ask me. Normally positioned D results in a 5-3 game-ending out. Not to mention all the wear and tear it would have saved on our collective nerves.

You guys need to pace yourselves. Dodgers and Rockies still to follow.

Don’t see how they have any choice but to live and die with Casilla. 12 innings, 20 K’s?

Might we see Romo used in the setup spot again? His June era is 1.23.

  8. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 26, 2010 at 11:27 am

The announcers didn’t like the shift either but few hitters seem able to take advantage of it. And I suspect that Bochy far preferred Martinez beating the shift than yanking one into the cove. Anyway, it worked out, a few shrieks and table poundings later…

Nomo Romo. He’s still stuck without an ‘out’ pitch. That is to say, if that slider isn’t perfect he’s screwed. I’d rather have those frisbees floating around the 6th than the 8th……

Electric pandemonium going INTO the game today. Crowd begins at the edge of their seats as Bumgarner’s anointment is upon us. He faces none other than Clay Bucholtz, currently the reigning top-gun among the AL’s better young starters who’s looking for his 11th, the ten accumulated while MadBum was toiling in Fresno.

This would have been a heavy probable for Boston except for Pedroia’s dinging his instep last night against Drrrty. Minus that big bat, they are down to Youkilis and VMart for heavy lumber. Maybe they will start the lumbering Big Papi to restore some balance to their power potential. Though his dominance has ebbed, Ortiz remains a threat. Main thing is that Madison will need to maintain his composure in the madhouse which will be the stadium at Willie Mays Plaza today. At least the crowd will be mostly friendly.

Three Giants ‘youngsters’ stood out last night. Knuckleballs do not faze Buster. Both Ishikawa and Schierholtz came through in pinch-hit roles. Very encouraging. All 3 should get more starting time. Also Pablo was moderately productive ~ not quite yet full Panda mode, but igniting the initial rally and also singling a second time. Uribe continues to rake. He looks to knock out 20-25 long flies this season.

Do think Boston has an edge tonight because of the dominant work by Bucholtz lately. But without Pedroia, my odds would be something like 53-47. Some crazy play may determine the game.

    Stix-

While I’m not a fan of more pt for nate anytime soon, I agree it’s time to get Ishi more time and ABs. It should come at the expense of Molina, not Posey. Despite getting very few opportunities, Ishi has looked great at the plate and should be a guy who gets some starts against RHP, especially at ATT. Lineup and playing time is really starting to work itself out, as we knew it would.

Wow…that’ll about do it for the DH argument. That guy has been dominating, shut out LA last time I saw him. “Guys get hurt running the bases”….at maybe 5 years old T-ball.

Dennis, as to your post on the IF shift, I was thinking about this morning on way to gym/work. Wilson (Whitey calling for it?) threw the pitch outside, against how the d was being played. If you’ve got the right side blanketed, then WTF is Wilson doing? There’s nobody over there to catch anything. Go up and in and jam his hands. This would be a good argument tho, about late inning D…protect the lines, “no doubles D” keep everything in front of you, etc.

No defense for where Cameron hit one, tho. But the BB was unnecessary, and P spot was up next. He’ll learn the hard way, I guess.

  35. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 26, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Atchison isn’t bad, he was in the Giants’ system for awhile. No great shakes but hardly a stiff.

  36. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 26, 2010 at 5:06 pm

Big learning curve ahead for Bumgarner all right. These are ML hitters and most of them can hurt you. If he’s gonna give up gophers he can’t put people on beforehand. Singleshots don’t hurt a lot and can be countered by a single, a productive out and another single ~ that seems to be current capacity for this team, at least against the likes of Bucholtz.

  37. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 26, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Good point, Willie. That whole sequence of pitches didn’t jive with that defense. Bad calls by Whitey for the location and Wilson for obliging. Bochy called the defense, maybe he needed to call the pitches as well. Or at least throw the red flag when they went contrary to his plan.

Those fuckers screaming “Yoooouk” in the stands need to be punched in the goddamn throat. Not looking like a Bummy kinda day.

  56. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 26, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Against one of the top hitting teams in baseball Bumgarner made only one significant mistake, that moonshot by Cameron. In 7 IP he had fewer baserunners than innings with five hits and a walk. Makes for strange stats: ERA: 5.14: WHIP: O.86. It would appear that MadBum is the real deal, making that fifth SP into a major strength instead of a gaping maw.

Giants had a look at the near entirety of the Sox pen, but came out looking pretty mediocre against them. LaBumbos and Dagos both winning now, so it looks like a sag, but not quite a drag. Bumgarner is not likely to make that mistake with runners on all that often. Beyond those two dingers he was pretty much Elliot Ness of the Untouchables. If these hitters can get it together against another tough SP tomorrow in Lester they could be facing one very wore down BP.

Three things completely over shadow the loss:
    Bumgarner’s outing
Panda totally smoked two balls ( and even had great swings right handed on the k), the best swings he’s had in a month
    Affeldt’s outing

  73. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 26, 2010 at 7:54 pm

So far this series has been a lot tougher on the Sox than the Giants. Pedroia with a broken foot and don’t know what’s up with Bucholtz, but if he even misses one more game it will be tough for that team.

We pretty much expected to lose, but hoped it would be close and ‘respectable’. Our expectations were met in both accounts. Bullpen held fine for the last two IPs and currently is not in bad shape. Affeldt seems to have recovered some of his moxie and Bautista is past his melt-down.

The Rotation is looking Rosy: Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Sanchez and Bumgarner. Can anybody top that? Padres been getting unexpected mileage outta Garland and Correia. Their 3 kids have held up well so far. Somehow they score runs. Dogs hit one of the Yankees declining starters tonight and Kuroda recovered from the initial onslaught. But two or three capable SPs aren’t gonna do it.

Torres has gone cold lately and that hasn’t helped. Sandoval is still pretty much just Pablo. Posey’s proving productive, though. What’s needed in the LU is for at least one of 8 to go on a tear. If a pair of hitters can do that simultaneously and Bochy sets his lineup accordingly, the Rotation and pen as they now stand should carry this team past a lot of tough competitors.

WSW: Don’t know if i could ever LIKE a loss, but i get where you are coming from. We saw what Bumgarner can do against one mean hitting team. He should fatten up on the lighter competition and learn as he goes against the toughies. One slightly different spin on one pitch tonight and SF would be 2-0 vs Boston.

  74. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 26, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Very impressed with Bum. Kid held his composure after being down early and gave the team ample opportunity to win it. Just couldn’t convert our chances.
