A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Big Game Today

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 11, 2010

Of course, a loss wouldn’t be devastating or anything but it would be really nice to go into the break 47-41 instead of 46-42. I think we have a great shot with this match up. Despite some very good results in certain games this year, Livan sucks and we have a new line up now that should handle him much better than the “Rowand/Molina” line ups. Bumgarner will open some eyes on the east coast today…….

A win today would be a great finish to the 1st half. Posey is out of his mind right now. Nice to see Ishikawa getting some consistent PT and a bump up the LU today.

    Go Giants!

With a better than expected defense, the hitting coming around, the bullpen solidifying around Chris Ray and the final starter of the first half of the season being Bumgarner; the Giants are in position to build a bit of momentum going into the Break. Though away from the computers yesterday attending my hometown’s 100th Anniversary celebration, i did catch up on yesterday’s game after getting home. Check up on my late, late commentary from last night.

I think this is big, for the Kid and for SF to set a tone. Road record is improving, offense is scoring runs and capable of making a comeback when the SP puts them behind. Nice W today provides momentum for second half, imo. Everyone goes home feeling good, come back refreshed and ready to fight it out.

I’m not sure SF can do anything to help themselves out offensively…IF is what it is. Pablo is best at 3B, FS is the everyday 2B, Uribe takes over SS Travis Posey and Huff cover 1B. The odds of finding a reasonably priced OF that can help that has either pop or speed/OB would be slim and none. And you can’t have enough pitching, imo….SF doesn’t have enough to trade.

Notice that Pads aren’t enjoying a trip to Rox yard either. LA starters continue to struggle and I honestly felt SF played the Rox even last week, and slapped Ubaldo around. They don’t play as well on the road, and Tracy doesn’t impress me much either. Should be a good battle, best pitching wins. Quien es?

I think Bum sits on Livo’s slop and takes that fat fuck deep today. That’s in addition to another 7 strong from our young lefty.

  6. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 11, 2010 at 9:39 am

Rowand, Franchez, Huff, Panda and Nate are a combined 29 for 68 (.426) with 5 bombs and 17 RBI vs Livo.

    Posey’s Remarkable 10 game streak:

Buster Posey went 4-5 with a HR and 3 RBI’s on Saturday giving him 19 hits,6 HR’s and 13 RBI’s in 10 games in July.No other rookie in National League History has had that many hits,Home Runs and RBI’s over a 10 game span.Several American league players have done that, most recently Brian Daubach for the 1999 Boston Redsox’s.

  9. max808's avatar max808 said, on July 11, 2010 at 10:01 am

Not much left to say about what Posey has done of late with the bat, but also the way he’s taken over behind the plate. Just so impressed with this kid’s maturity and presence back there. Didn’t think it would all come toghether so soon. If Pablo can find himself and the SP comes around, they are going to be tough to beat.

  10. DaddyO's avatar DaddyO said, on July 11, 2010 at 10:25 am

In regards to Pablo, it seems notable that he walked 3 times yesterday. I didn’t see the game so have no idea if the pitching was exceptionally poor or if Panda is making another attempt to improve the quality of his at-bats, as it seemed he was trying to do from the season’s outset. A second half of the .330 25 HR player we had last year would truly be helpful. He doesn’t have to be the guy who carries the team everyday, but once in awhile would be nice.

  17. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 11, 2010 at 10:55 am

That walk by Posey was as huge as anything he’s done this past week. It was a clinic that some of the other Giants need to learn from. And Ishi is making the most of his opportunity. Look at how Ishi has approached his role compared to how, say, Frandsen did while he was here. The difference in attitude and performance.

  18. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 11, 2010 at 10:55 am

  19. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 11, 2010 at 10:59 am

Bumgarner is sneaky fast. That smooth, easy motion, and then that 93 MPH fastball gets in on the hitter quicker than they think it is.

Dennis, Baggs covered it pretty well in his blog yesterday. We’ll never know how Buster would have done had he started the year in SF. It’s just possible the time in AAA this season really benefitted him.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 11, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Possible, but highly unlikely. Didn’t Sabean himself say something this year about how crappy AAA pitching is? Facing inferior opposition isn’t gonna help much. And saying they wanted him down there working on his catching skills won’t fly. Look at all the time he played first base in Fresno. We got so desperate for hitting that we called him up to play first. Everyone here wanted him up day one. They paid for one more year of Bengie and were trying to eek out every cent till it started to equate diminishing returns. The front office blew it, plain and simple.

  32. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 11, 2010 at 11:42 am

Isn’t it a wonderful feeling that Wellemeyer will never be the 5th starter anymore? And that’s praying even if they trade Sanchez.Rather see Martinez or anyone else.Wellemeyer should be cut loose after the break or thrown in in any trade. With the addition of Ray,we don’t need this stiff any longer.

  59. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 11, 2010 at 1:20 pm

I do not for a second think that it’s anything more than a terrible slump, however. You don’t put up the numbers he did at every level in 2008, then all of last year, and this April.. if it’s a “fluke”. He definitely got himself completely bolluxed up but… “he can hit”. They have to get him back to that place.

At some point, though, the Giants can’t just keep waiting. He needs to sit the bench against lefthanded starters for a while.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 11, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I agree he could use to sit a few vs lefties, but who’s gonna play third? Uribe’s numbers when he’s played third this year are horrible: .120 .241 .200 .441 And third has always been his weakest position defensively. At least the Panda hasn’t taken his struggles at the plate out with him on the field. Our best hope is to pray that he snaps outta it quickly.

Posey is remarkable for his composure and his ability to use the whole field. That’s very unusual for a young hitter, but very exciting for Giants fans. We’ve been lusting for a top-flight position prospect since Matt Williams and it looks like he’s finally here. Very cool.

I Think he’s going to turn out to be an excellent defensive catcher as well, if only because he has the talent and he’s willing to put in the work to develop it.

Shit, I didn’t even know he was married. If that’s true, that surely can’t help, but it’s still no excuse. It hasn’t caused his defense to go into a deep funk. Pablo just needs to see the damn ball and hit the damn ball. That’s if he can see 100%. Maybe there is something askew with his eyesight. The goggles/no goggles, dark goggles/light goggles hasn’t worked thus far. We’re gonna need him big time this second half.
