A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Wake Me Up When it’s Tomorrow

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 14, 2010

God I hate the All Star Break. It’s funny to feel so deprived of baseball and it’s only been a couple of days. Somehow we make it all Winter long without the game….

Very entertaining game last night, one that the players seemed to really get into in the later innings.  I still would have liked to see Timmy show his stuff on the national stage but whatever, now he pitches tomorrow….

Congrats to SAN DOG who won the All Star Game Contest and another computer from Michael…..

One advantage SF does have on the remaining schedule is that they have played less home games than teams ahead of them, by 4 or 5. Interestingly, SF has better record vs. Central and East teams than others too in some cases.

Road trip was unkind to Uribe 2 for 24, burrell 4 for 26 and nate, and Burrell seems to hit much better at ATT than on the road, higher OPS and more HRs. Nate’s OPS is down to .685, worse than F Sanchez at .705, and just unacceptable for a guy with 2 freaking HRs in 160 ABs. Uribe with his slump down to .750, and last year he raked at ATT so I hope he is healthy and ready to go.
Hope these guys can pick up the slack for Pablo, who tho he gets a lot of flack, is hardly the only guy under performing lately.

Yeah, it was hard to pull for Broxton last night….must be those sideburns. That last out he got was hit pretty fucking hard too. So what would be approx date for first WS game here vs. Yankees in the rermatch of 62, now that home field has been decided?

As far as Bonds and Pablo goes, I just think Bonds would love to be a part of the scene, even if it is just for an hour or two. With his knowledge of hitting and experience at ATT, I think he would be an incredible asset, and help Pablo have a better idea of what to expect from pitchers and how best to handle it. Bonds had the patience to take the walks when he had to, and could hit anyone from the flamethrowers to Maddux (whom he pounded) and Glavine types, and beat the fucking shift while he was at it.

Hearing Bonds last year in the booth with K and K was an eye opener for me; he was positive and into it. Plus, you know how much he would like to see SF handle LA….why not have him on hand when they show up next week?

  4. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on July 14, 2010 at 9:01 am

Why, indeed? No one really knows what’s going on in Bonds’ head, but his knowlege of hitting, and howe pitchers try to get guys out, is off the charts.

You’d think there would be some way to get him in the dugout. Shit, I wanted RJ to be signed as a pitching coach of some kind this year. He kicked (or stroked) Nasty’s ass, and got him turned around last year.

  5. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 14, 2010 at 9:01 am

Willie: As per our exchange yesterday, why not get Bonds involved? And you’re right, the series with the LaBumbos would be a perfect time to start. I should think Pablo would be pleased, thrilled and honored to have the all-time HR champ as his mentor. This is the time of year teams start looking for an edge. What an edge! Imagine. A bit of Bonds magic and we get our Panda back.

      congrats, SanDog, way to go.

Bonds has a hitting secret no one knows?
He may have an advantage understanding pitchers
He may have an advantage with the stroke
He may have an advantage on not getting rattled

Oh, hell, WE may have an advantage with him in A coaching box.

      go Giants

Congrats to SanDog, and hallelujah to the NL for finally winning — with a little help from Mr. Wilson. As if I wasn’t crazed enough about trying to get to the playoffs, just the thought of having home field in the WS might send me over the edge.

Looking ahead to the Mets, they’re expected to start Dickey, Niese, Pelfrey and Santana. And if y’all didn’t know, Carlos Beltran (or as Jon Miller likes to say, Bel-trrrrrrran) makes his 2010 debut and will bat cleanup. Don’t know the status of Reyes, who sat out the ASG with an oblique injury. It’s enough that if he does play, he may not be able to bat lefty.

I would expect to see a lot of Burrell, the ultimate Met-killer: 42 career HRs vs. the Amazins. His next-highest total vs. another team doesn’t even crack 30.

This being an off day, can any of you W’s fans fill me in on Anthony Morrow?

The jet-lag seems to be finally wearing off…one more day wothout baseball is actually just what I need. For today’s discussion, I thought it would be interesting to list the potenital hitting acquisitions the Giants could make and the pros and cons. I would hope we dont need to make a move, but an extra bat could go a long way to staying competitive:

    1) Prince Fielder –
Pros: Slugger, star-power that could rally an offense around ala Barry Lamar Bonds.
Cons: Scott Boras client with just one year left of arbitration. Cheaper alternatives seem to be available and ones not represented by Scott Boras.

    2) Corey Hart –
Pros: Having a career year, one more arbitration year, reasonable salary for 2010, Sabaean not likely to offer the farm. right-handed hitter could excel at ATT.
Cons: Having a career year, Brewers will likely ask for more than he is worth, stupid beard.

    3) Jayson Werth –
Pros: Right-handed power bat, struggling year could lower his trade value significantly, free agent so dont need to be stuck with a contract, may play with a chip on his shoulder if traded to increase his free agent value.
Cons: Dismal 2010 stats, improved second half may make it difficult to re-sign him.

    4) David DeJesus –
Pros: All-around versatile player; reasonable $6 million club option for 2011
Cons: Not aa cleanup sluggger, lefty-hitter, Red Sox circling

    5) Cody Ross –
Pros: Outfielder with versatility to play different positions; one more arb year
Cons: Not someone to carry a team; very average numbers for 2010

    6) Jose Guillen –
Pros: Some right-handed power, final year of his contract
Cons: Overpaid and old, questionable ability to help carry a team

    7) Adam Dunn –
Pros: Still mashing homers, free agent at end of year
Cons: free agent at end of year, lefty hitter (but certainly should not hurt at ATT), Nationals likely looking for a number of prospects

    8) Josh Willingham –
Pros: Above average year for him; .913 OPS, one more arb year
Cons: Average defender, not cleanup hitter to carry a team

    Am I missing anyone else???

Couple of things. I don’t want to fuck around with anyone who is a FA, years-end, unless they are relatively young, and the Giants could lock them up for a couple of years.

You also mention a few times “not a clean-up hitter.” I don’t think the Giants necessarily need a clean-up hitter.

One other guy you could add to the list: Jose Bautista.

      My trade parameters:

      – No FAs.
      – Trade prospects (no starters offered in any trade).
      – Prefer an OFer, and am okay with a guy like DeJesus or Willingham. (OFer allows the team to play Ishi extensively over the next few months to see if he continues to rake. We know he plays plus D.)

Macdog, I have watched a lot of the Warriors unfortunately in the last 3-4 years. I think losing Azubuike will have a bigger impact on the team than losing Morrow, but what a loss for someone that we got from nowhere and very few people in the NBA have that pure of a set shot. The rest of his game may never reach NBA standards for great players, but this team has been awfully mismanaged and I cant wait for the Larry Ellison era.

Congrats San Dog on winning the Flapper contest. Enjoy the new system. I sure could use one to replace my 5+ year old HP boat anchor.

Glad to see the Senior Circuit finally put one in the books last night. Great to see Wilson with his effective 10-pitch 1-2-3, too. Those shoes? Hey, he keeps pitching as he has of late, he can wear pink with purple fucking polka-dots as far as I am concerned.

I was hoping to see Timmy get in the game (rotation and Dodger match-ups be damned). Odd about him missing the red carpet affair due to some type of “communication problem.” Wonder if the league fines him.

Getting Bonds in the fold to work with the Giant hitters would be awesome. But, until the whole perfury thing is fully done, I just don’t see it happening. How much longer can that fucking circus go on???

Twin mentioned Alderson getting sent down to A ball last night. I also posted info and a link on that story. Another guy who got a lot of chatter re: should the Giants sign him, was Brad Penny. Well, he has been on the 15 day DL, and at 7.5 for one season, another good move by Sabes to have passed on that one.

Is it Thursday, yet? Fuck I am so ready to get the 2nd half rolling!

This whole Ishikawa-thang has to get played out before I would even consider making a move. No one on that list really does much for me. I suppose if Burrell goes into a major funk I’d trade a lil’ sumthin’ for Willingham. That’s about it tho..

And to add…I think the Giants can compete and win, as is. But, another bat could provide some extra sizzle/insurance.

  14. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 14, 2010 at 10:06 am

GH: Nice listing service you did. Reviewing the options my money is still on Willingham as per my comments earlier in the week. What buzzes me up about this guy is his ability to draw walks and consequent high, high OBP. This zone is precisely the area in which the Giants are weakest as a team.

Acquisition of Willingham for one good pitching prospect, one fair one and Schierholtz as an OF-fill-in for the Nats and the Giants will have ducks on the pond much more frequently; which, together with their rising SP, will mean more runs scored. Batting the dude second, with Sanchez dropping to eighth could mean that the team would score early, score often. Oh, and he’s not a bad power hitter besides.

  15. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 14, 2010 at 10:10 am

Kruk said this morning that if the Giants were to make a move it would be for another arm, not another bat.

  16. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 14, 2010 at 10:27 am

Flav, they could have used the sign and trade with Morrow to add him to that trade instead of giving up Buike….but who knows how his knee looks….

  17. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 14, 2010 at 10:36 am

I think Kruk has proven he often does not have a clue…if they are going to add a starter, then they are likely trading one to get a hitter.

I am in agreement with 3 parameters of a deal:

    1) Outfielder instead of 1B;

    2) Not a free agent; and

    3) Right-Handed Slugger (I still think the needed bat has to be one with pop from the right-side)!

I think Hart and Willingham are the two best options on the table. MLB Trade Rumors notes that the Brewers asked for Bumgarner or Sanchez for Hart.

Asking for Bumgarner is laughable but I would think long and hard about Sanchez. I was expecting Sanchez to step up this year and pitch as well as Cain had last year. I have been disappointed that he still has not found that consistency.

I question whether Sanchez is ever going to be a top of the rotation guy. Now with Bumgarner stepping up, he is quite capable of being a potential #2 guy in two years.

So a Sanchez and Pucetas for Hart would be very tempting.

Willingham may be had for Pucetas and Burriss. Burriss being from DC and with Guzman departing at the end of the season, I could see the Nats coveting Burriss.

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on July 14, 2010 at 10:50 am

I was expecting Sanchez to step-up this year and pitch as well as Cain had last year.

13-10 — LHP Jonathan Sanchez’s record in the one year since he threw a no-hitter on July 10, 2009. His ERA in that time was 3.30.

      Current stats for 2010:
      18 starts, 103.2 IP, 7-6, 3.47 ERA, 1.293 WHIP, 104 Ks, 53 BB.

I don’t know GH…those are pretty decent numbers.

You also have to remember that he is young, and will probably get better. I don’t see them trading Sanchez this year, and don’t want to see it, either. Corey Hart? Not for what the Brew wants (one of our starters…Fuck THEM).

      • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 14, 2010 at 11:58 am

Good enough numbers I agree to entice a trade, but he is not going to be a top 3 pitcher in our rotation and he has not looked like has elevated his game in the last month to be a shutdown type of pitcher as Cain and Lincecum have not been on top of their game.

The question really is whether Corey Hart makes a difference in our lineup to help clinch a playoff spot. I cant answer that. But if he could, then I think trading a pitcher of value like Sanchez would be worth it. Hart is certainly having a career year and wont live up to expectations next year. But can we catch a spark and make a run big enough to make a World Series this year?

I dont think so with our current lineup, but another hitter that could hit cleanup may be a difference maker that could transform us from a playoff contender to a championship contender.

If we come up short this year and had not traded Sanchez, I could see them dangle Cain in a blockbuster…

Ellison is buying the wrong team today. He should be closing on the Giants, so we could have a one control owner situation with a guy who wants to win above all else. We don’t have that now, and the Giants never will consistently succeed at a high level under this current focacta partnership group thing….

Snarkk, if there’s an owner out of his depth, I’d point the finger at the 49ers, not the Giants. They are, once again, at a crossroads. If they do well, they can move forward with the quasi-GM Baalke. If they implode, there will be serious questions as to how they are ruinng the franchise by not ever putting an experienced GM in place in the 10 years they’ve run the team.

    The Giants are fine.

On the Bonds thing. I don’t think anyone can hire him. I truly believe he was unofficially/officially banned from baseball. When he offered to play at the league minimum and no one took him, not even as a DH, I think the fix was in.

I don’t see the Giants trading much before the deadline and they might wait until after (with their record, not many teams would be blocking a trade after the deadline), unless it was for pitching. If they jump into the Lee/Oswalt fray then yeah Dirty is getting traded for a bat. If they are just going for a bat, they can wait until late or after and not have to give up as much.

I know it’s important to win each series but man, I sure would love to see this team knock out a ten game streak coming out of the break.

GH: Pucetas to the Nats would be a laugher, in any event when considering his skyrocketing ERA this season at Fresno. Burriss could fly in such a move. Nats might go for someone like David Mixon, but might insist on Daryl Maday instead. Willingham would make Nate pretty much superfluous for the Giants. Add him with Hinshaw and/or Matos and try and pry loose one of Washington’s better than fair relievers. Nats could also get Bautista and/ or Medders if there was interest.

Point is the Giants have a lot of spare parts right now, most of them at Fresno. Washington is going nowhere and they know it. If they can get their future hometown middle infielder, plus two or three pitching prospects, they could see some daylight around the deal as they build to be quite competitive in about two years.

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 14, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Actually the direction the team has taken since Neukom became managing partner should give everyone confidence…whatever. At least when it happens there sure as fuck won’t be any “I told you so” from Snarkkles…
As far as trading one of our starters, I just don’t see it with Zits, Cain, and Sanchez all struggling of late. And while I have confidence that Matt will turn it around, I have zero confidence in the Zitster. Barry and Wellemeyer is a real scary duo, and I’m not real sure about Iron Joe as anything but a long relief/spot guy…

  27. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 14, 2010 at 11:55 am

Bozo, speaking for myself anyway and possibly for WillieD: The idea was not so much a formal return of Bonds to the Giants, unless ownership and management wanted to butt heads with the rest of them. Rather, the concept was more along the lines of a personal coach/trainer/adviser/motivator for Sandoval and possibly for some of the other younger hitters on the team. In such a quasi-informal arrangement, MLB would probably prefer to let sleeping dogs lie rather than to have all the borderline-racist “blackballing” ooze out.

WSwin, the partnershiip has owned the club since they bought out Lurie, with some limited partners in, out, and now Neukom as managing GP. That is what Neukom “et al” means, and the history is clear enough. This ownership is more interested in growing partner share equity than winning a title. Ellison is a ruthless dude who wants/demands excellence, unlike current ownership….

I don’t think multiple owners have been the problem. Let’s be honest. At the end of the Bonds era nobobdy wanted to come here because the dude was a raging assholeand the FO was milking that fucker for all the cheddar they could. After that The Giants seriously sucked for a couple years so no FA wanted to be here. Now the club is on the rise with a strong staff, Posey and Sandoval (if he gets it back together). This club finishes +.500 again and Huff resigns I can see FA’s wanting to come to Baghdad by the Bay.

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 14, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Let’s not get crazy Dirt….one plus of adding Hart or Willingham now would at least keep them in the fold for one more year and discount the need for adding a big name free agent hitter this off-season. Keep Huf and maybe Uribe with DeRosa and Franchez back next year, the components would be in place for making another run next year.

If that fails in 2011, then I would be in favor of moving Cain and his coming $15 mill salary for 2012 and cleaning house with DeRosa and Sanchez coming off the books and Rowand being in the last year of his contract. I would hope the Wheeler, Dominquez, Crawford, Bonds, Neal and Ford contingency would be ready to create the next Tampa Bay Rays type of young team built from within rather than the Sabean patchwork quilt of veterans upon veterans…

Thanks, Win. Boy, I had no idea a LP was not a GP. Come on. I’ve formed and valued partnerships and corporations, dude. No lecture needed. The issue here is direction. With a plurality ownership in the Burns family that seems satsified with the status quo of management, and a managing GP who has no experience at baseball, and a bunch of LPs running around that just enjoy the association with the Giants and their suite and partnership meetings, the organization lacks a direction, a killer instinct, an ethos. Saying there is a “Giants Way” doesn’t mean anything when there is no track record of such a thing, and we see a lack of fundamental play and player development throughout an entire past decade of play. Give me one owner with a vision, I’ll take it anytime over this ownership group…

“No one could dispute the direction” Neukom’s taken. What direction IS that? Nothing is new. He’s kept the same people on board as before. Sabes is still GMing by the seat of his pants. We’ll see where it goes, but lots of people dispute this “direction” will lead anywhere. Read the papers, the blogs, listen to the radio and TV. Just because Oracle swallows the company line, doesn’t mean everybody else does. How about a BF poll — if you could change out current ownership for Larry Ellison alone, would you do it?….

  39. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 14, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Hmmm. I’m looking at the W/L record, nimrod. Does that no longer indicate a change in direction? Or is 88-74 the same as 72-90? Tell you what: you wait, I’ll lead-as usual.

  40. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 14, 2010 at 4:01 pm

And now a poll of blog commenters is to decide. Cool, let’s see what Snarkklefuck’s running mates have to say on this. Gringo, Soph,Fishwrap, BarryForever, Kat, what say ye?

  41. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 14, 2010 at 4:07 pm

BTW, I wish you guys would win these prizes on your own. That’s twice this year that the Oracle had to recuse himself so one of you could win. Or maybe Snarkkles should enter and just use my pick.
I do suspect that Snarkk doesn’t enter because of that Danville address. He’ll say it’s because he has a state of the art system but I’d guess that it’s the Danville thing.

  42. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 14, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I predicted 93Ws for this year, to my chagrin and ridiculous April optimism. I’ll still stick with it being Rockies and Giants finishing the West in that order, but Gmen look like the best they can do now with a tough 2nd half schedule is about 85Ws and hard pressed to get a WC berth. As I said in my original post, Giant fans want an ownership that puts the team consistently in real contention to succeed at a high level. That means in playoff berth contention every year, so that at least one of those playoff runs the stars can align and win a championship. Getting to the playoffs once every 5-7 years with a flawed squad is unacceptable for a team that consistently generates revenue in the top 10 of MLB…

Gotcha- so you’ll wait until they get in the playoffs for a few years in a row and then you’ll be a fan. Cool.

I’ve had lunch in Danville a few times. Other than that, I wish I had the scratch to live or “stay” there, and whatever “address” you’re talking about, is whole cloth folderol. Spare me the Giants fan loyalty test. I don’t need to prove bona fides of my Giant fanship to you or anyone else. Sounds like you’re one of those that confuse healthy skepticism with lack of patriotism…

Funny that the biggest Doom Talk comes from Mr. 93. What the fuck would Snarkk have predicted if they had a GM and manager with brains? 125? 135?

  55. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 14, 2010 at 4:48 pm

The more I hear FP the more I change my mind on him. He’s even more of a tool than I previously thought. He talks with more fluidity than JT, but says less. Now, put Bonds with Kuip, and THAT I would definitely make an effort to hear. When Bonds was in the booth for a (half?) inning last year, he was great…

  56. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 14, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I admitted I made a mistake with the 93Ws. I bought into all the Polly bullshit, and put hope over reality, since at that point it was only Huff, DeRosa and the phantom presence of Franchez on the horizon that were the real differences from 2009, with Posey but a promise. Never again. MVP for first half: EZily it’s Huff, with Posey 2nd. Uribe third due to his flameout with injury the last few weeks. I’ve got even more respect for Huff now, he was quoted as saying the AS Game was a “sham”. Exactly….

    My first half MVPs:

    1. Huff n Puff
    2. Posey / Bengielena (tie)
    3. Uribe

I forgot before to give Bengie a tie w/Buster for 2nd. He should be recognized and thanked for sucking so much he got his ass traded. The Rangers fans have seen enough of his act already. They are not happy. He’s at BA .174 and .240 OBP through 7 games with Texas. So, I’ll give Sabes a thumbs up on getting Ray for those 44DDs, even though SF is still paying Molina’s salary. And consarn it, I just flat miss typing “Bengielena”…

MVP List, in order of importance to the team (top 5):
    1) Huff
    2) Wilson (if he was failing we’d be fucked)
    3) torres (finally gave us a leadoff guy)
    4) Posey
    5) Uribe

“ESPN’s Keith Law had this to say on July 8th:

“I wouldn’t trade anything of value for Hart. His first half is way over his head, and hitters who can be beaten that easily would scare me if I was looking to acquire them for a playoff run.”

If this potential deal goes down, I hope Sabes doesn’t overplay his hand and deal one of our starters.

  67. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 14, 2010 at 6:20 pm

I just gave my top 3. Uribe carried the squad early with run production and fell off later due to supposed injury. Torres was unexpectedly good, but I give him my #4, maybe he’s tied at #3 with Uribe. Posey brought a totally new hitting dynamic to the LU when he became a regular, and he friggin dominated at the plate through that last, critical 11 game roadie where SF could have gone off the cliff after that disaster of a homestand — so he gets my #2. Hey Reno, the El Presidente gets the MVP all right — most valuable putz of a hitter. But, he’s fine defensively and OK as a backup…

That’s just white boy fever with Posey. No way he can be rated above Torres. Andres could very well be ahead of Huff even. I’ll go with Fangraph’s value rating, Posey is properly 4th among position players:

Here’s my MSP, most surprising player. Ishi. Fine job as PH, and while riding the pine, apparently worked hard on getting rid of that down low and inside hole in his swing, while getting more aggresive on hittable pitches. The last roadie showed clutch ABs and should earn him more PT in the second half — unless, that is, the AS break made Bonehead forget about that…

  72. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 14, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Ishi isn’t surprising me. Dude has always shown he can hit at home, he’s a young kid, now he’s showing he can hit on the road. I truly believe he’s going to be our *bat* addition in the 2nd half……..

  73. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 14, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Flav, NO Fielder either . . . This is a DP (see porn definition, not “double play”). First, we get fucked by the Brewers, then Boras tells us to bend over.

Yeah, Fielder has been 2nd in HRs since May 4, but only one w/ 15+ HR & sub-40 RBIs in same time span.

“white boy fever”. What IS it with that shit? Everywhere a racist motive lurking in the corner applied to the most mundane of topics. Earlier in the season I said Uribe was the MVP so far. And McCovey being my favorite all time Giant is just a big lie, too. So anybody putting Torres on the list below your list is a racist, I suppose. Total ad hominem whole cloth bullshit looking for a wall to stick on…
