A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What Needs To Happen From Here on Out For Us To Win the Division

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 15, 2010

Winning the division really is our only goal right now. I just don’t think the WC will be realistic for us–too many good teams in the NL East–and at least one of those Big 3 (Braves, Mets, Phillies) will make some loud noise at the trade deadline–Sabes won’t compete with that….

It’s easy to be negative and harp on the failings of the first half—The older bloated salary vet guys have sucked. Our BP (minus Wilson) was awful. The SP has been mediocre. Pablo Sandoval has turned into Guy Sularz, at least from a production standpoint….

But look at what’s gone mindblowingly RIGHT for us: Huff, Torres, Uribe, Posey, Bumgarner, Burrell, Whiteside and Freddy Sanchez have ALL done more than I thought they would *this* year. Those were 8 home runs for Sabean, as far as I’m concerned– and he gets additional props for the guys he passed on signing (Penny, Nick Johnson, etc)….And turning Molina into anything other than a worn out bra strap was genius– Ray looks like a very stabilizing force for us in the BP…….

But we’re not winning the division “as-is”. I don’t think we need to add anyone, certainly not until the Ishikawa thing gets played out. Burrell, too. If either or both of those guys maintain their level of success we set positionally. Obviously we can’t have any big injuries but that’s the same for all the fringe playoff teams. There are certain guys we’d miss less than others but that’s a topic for another day. With everything that’s gone RIGHT this year, all we really need to win this division is for some of the things that have gone colossally WRONG to right themselves—Pablo, the SP, the BP– any of those 3 get fixed and we are good to go. Maybe 2 of 3 depending on which 2. But we aren’t that far away. We don’t need a “Derek Lee” or a “David Freaking DeJesus”. We need the YOUNG guys we counted on going into the season to start living up to expectations: Pablo, Cain, Timmy, Dirrrrrrrrty. Those guys need to step it up starting today. Let’s hope they’re “second half” guys…….

REGARDING THE NEWEST CONTEST: Please get your picks in to me or twin by 5pm today. Give us your prediction for W/l total at end of season and whether you think we make the playoffs. So far I’ve only got about 10, not sure how many TWIN has. He’s putting up a big prize so I hope we get enough entrants to justify doing it….

Cards up on the LaBumbos in the top of the 7th with LA batting. They knocked out Kershaw after 4.1 innings and 88 pitches. Carpenter trying to nail it for the Redbirds. Bums on their second reliever.

Price on Hart just jumped. Hit his 22nd tonight in a 2-1 losing cause vs the Braves. That team is getting scary. It may help the Mets sweat it a bit tonight, though. And forget Hart. He’d be too pricey. Probably a career year.

sorry, but this Mets line up sucks. Wright is dangerous but he’s also easy to strikeout. Beltran is back for his first game, forget him. I think Timmy mows through these guys……

“R.A. Dickey”–fuck that, that’s the gayest name I’ve ever seen. We should beat him just because of his lame name……..

Interesting, I really don’t follow knuckleballers, they mean nothing to me. But he’s interesting, he throws it hard. Actually shouldn’t that make him *easier* to hit? He throws his knuckle only slightly slower than he throws his fastball…….

  11. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 15, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Though he ended up flying out, Huffster made Dickey work for it. After a two-strike count, he took him full. The more i see of Aubrey, the more i like him. Even his outs are often productive. We need to encourage more of those non-hackers. New rules for Sabean’s future swaps and such: Limit of two hackers per lineup.

  36. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Flav, this is what went down . . .

“While the two sides worked out the details, Ellison came back with what Galatioto (Cohan’s advisor) described as a “marginally higher” offer just hours before the signing.

“He was way past the deadline,” Galatioto said. “There was no way I was going to recommend that bid to Chris. … Once the shot clock expires, are you allowed to get back on the court and have it count? I don’t think so.”

Me? I think if it’s my team, I take the highest frickin’ offer . . . Contrary to what this idiot Galatioto said, they weren’t playing basketball (i.e., his reference to a “shot clock expiring”).

  37. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:21 pm

a lot of guys don’t like FP but I always have. He’s a little grating and he says some dumb shit now and again, but he also gives you a lot of detailed nuggets that we never gt from Kruk— this inning is a good example…….

  38. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:26 pm

not me Blade, I like the new ownership–they’re Bay Area guys, they have deep pockets and they are already involved in the NBA– that influenced the decision to go with them. Elliison dicked around and didn’t get it done. He got to caught up and mucked up in his own negotiation skills. I was involved in a real estate deal with him a couple of years ago. i didn’t ever meet with him directly but he diddled and daddled around and finally ended up caving in to our original demands. Today’s results don’t surprise me at all…..

  39. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:27 pm

The Warriors still have 6 yrs. remaining on their lease with Ellison’s Oracle Co. for naming rights with the Coliseum. Larry should rename his corporation FU Cohan Inc. and stick it to ’em.

  40. Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:31 pm

I know a knuckler isn’t the easiest to bunt, but don’t you just want to send four guys to the plate to just do that sometime? I mean, it does fuck with your timing so just bunt the fucker.

  41. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I’ll defer to you if you’ve dealt with him. I don’t know anything about him, except that he has about 30 billion dollars via his Oracle Corporation.

  42. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I didn’t *deal* with him directly but I represented a seller on a deal where he bought a house for a family member off the market. Basically, he just paid for everything. But he came in hard with supposedly no room to negotiate. We ended up getting everything we wanted, EVERYTHING. Now, he could probably give a shit about a 5 million dollar deal and maybe he just wanted to *win* 500K cause that’s how guys like that are. But he gave up everything quick, almost surprisingly so.

To hear that he raced into the party today, after it was over for a while, and lost…well, that not a big surprise based off the one one-off, random interaction I’ve had with him…..

  50. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 15, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Regardless who now owns the Warriors, the change is a breath of fresh air. I have no idea whether these guys will improve the team, but it can’t get any worse than the status quo. Basketball is fixed – my opinion only – with only a few teams able to compete financially. Couple that with a Commissioner that jacks off in his basement whenever:

    A. The Celtics, Knicks or Lakers are in the NBA Finals;
    B. One of the same teams win “the fix is in” lottery;
    C. He gets to approve Gasol for a bag of basketball type deals; and/or
    D. All of the above.

Oh, and lets not even get into the ref’s favoritism of star players.

AND we gain one on the LaBumbos and move up half a game on both the Dagos and the Rox. Fine start to the second half.

Saw this game locally through the prism of the Mets announcers. First win for Timmy against Mets, against whom he had had a 5-something ERA. Keith Hernandez said Lincy threw more fastballs than he typically does against the Mets. At any rate, nice, nice start to the so-called second half. Pablo hit the ball well and had a fine, albeit awkward catch; Posey bustered; Franchez made a good play to end the game. As Keith H. said, Rowand’s slide at home was awful. (I want Torres back in a hurry.) Good game, boyz. POTG = Timmy.

  75. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 15, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Pawlie: Torres did come in at the end as a defensive replacement, so it’s a good chance we’ll see him tomorrow. Still thinking Sabean needs to dangle some farmhand pitching in front of the Nats GM, probably adding Burriss and maybe even Nate. Picture Sanchez batting 8th and Willingham second.

Hell, i could even see a deal with the Royals to get DeJesus for that slot. But Christ on a crutch, we might have to start watching de lingo if that happens. Of course, we had a taste of Jesus last year and he’s back toiling at Fresno and Huff the Magic Dragon christened Posey with that sobriquet, but there’s something just a bit of a holy terror about Buster.
