Down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth….
Timmy hits Kemp. Everyone is saying the right things about this: “No WAY was that done on purpose”. But I don’t know. It was 5-1, Lincecum was pitching badly, frustrated, and just about done for the night. Maybe he hit Kemp to fire up the team. Maybe he did it for Rowand. Maybe it wasn’t intentional….But whatever the reason, the team came together at the moment. Total puss-reaction by Kemp, by the way. He did like a 6 step half circle toe dance to nowhere. Sandoval charged in like a tiger…….
And then……
Sandoval’s double in the 6th……
Bautista and Casilla somehow dragging and scratching the team through 3.1 innings of scoreless ball….
Rowand’s sacrifice…..
Mattingly’s blunder and Bochy’s keen eye……
Torres’ double….
Posey muscles a single…….
Affeldt? AFFELDT!!!!!!!!
wow. And I’m still LQTM…….
No way Lincecum hit Kemp intentionally. You can tell with his reaction, but was good to see Timmy was not intimidated by Kemp’s act.
I don’t think the first one up and in was intentiional but the one that hit Kemp looked like it was. Lincecum probably didn’t appreciate the stink eye. Modern ball players are total pussies about the up and in pitch. Don’t like the inside pitch? Fuck you. And that is basically what Lincecum told him with that second pitch.
I have read a couple articles saying Lincecum should have been worried with Kemp charging the mound due to the size difference. I’m not saying Timmy would have taken him but somehow I doubt he would have backed down. You don’t get to The Show weighing a buck fifty soaking wet if you aren’t a scapper.
I think Kemp would have pummeled our Timmy, but looks liek Pablo and Uribe were ready to take care of business…
dirt – I think Panda having your back helps a bit in a scrap.
I continue to be amazed at the effect Posey has on the wildmen. He was able to calm down Bautista and Casilla and get them to throw the right pitches to the right spots. Those two gave up 1 hit and 1 BB in 3 and a third, unbelievable for two guys I thought should be released. Plus he gets another great inning out of Affeldt, who has sucked all year. Plus too remember the ball that hit Belliard the night before that Posey alerted ump he swung at, so he was called out instead of safe at first on WP.
If he can continue to coax success from the pen (and remember he caught Zito’s dominant game of the year vs. Mets last week), SF could get by as is.
Twin said early on everyone should enjoy the game and stop bashing the LU….I can’t think of a more enjoyable end to an evening watching baseball in a long time.
Personally, I think Kemp’s act was just that . . . and I’m laughing about the people that say that Lincecum should have been concerned about the possibility of Kemp charging the mound. This is a fact jack – A bully gets over by making you think they are tough . . . challenge them and they back down EVERY time (see Mike Tyson). In short, my money would have been on Tim.
I think this continues tonight..I would love to see a dust-up with Blake getting some chin-music or Russell Martin…they have got it coming….
If I’m reading Rule 8.06 correctly, the umps didn’t get it right after Bochy alerted them about the second trip that Mattingly inadvertently made in the 9th.
Rule 8.06
“In a case where a manager has made his first trip to the mound and then returns the second time to the mound in the same inning with the same pitcher in the game and the same batter at bat, after being warned by the umpire that he cannot return to the mound, the manager shall be removed from the game and the pitcher required to pitch to the batter until he is retired or gets on base. After the batter is retired, or becomes a base runner, then this pitcher must be removed from the game. The manager should be notified that his pitcher will be removed from the game after he pitches to one hitter, so he can have a substitute pitcher warmed up.
The substitute pitcher will be allowed eight preparatory pitches or more if in the umpire’s judgment circumstances justify.”
Again, if I’m reading that right, sounds like Mattingly should have been ejected right then and there and Broxton should have been forced to pitch to Torres.
Dennis, I think your reading of the rule is correct. Bochy must have slow talked them into it.
Dennis, I think that is not correct. The key clause is “after being warned by the umpire.”
Mattingly was never officially warned, so once he made the official second visit, clause (b) takes effect, which requires the pitcher ot be automatically removed. Mattingly does not then get ejected nor is the pitcher forced to pitch to the batter up.
Things are tightening up now in the National League. Though things could change its looking more and more like ten of the 16 teams are becoming more and more irrelevant to the Playoffs. The six still standing are Atlanta (pretty much by themselves in the East); St. Louis and Cincinnati (separated by 1 game in the Central) and three in the West: The Padres; the Giants and the Rox.
Since the Break and to a degree before that, the Mets, Phillies and Dodgers have been advancing backwards. NL Champs the last two seasons, the Phils are the big shockers. Dogs were expected by many pundits to be the class of the West, but more and more they are becoming the ass of the West. Mutts made a move, but got stuffed at China Basin and haven’t recovered yet. Now they been losing to the Snakes.
Present Wild-card status is the Reds by half a game over the Giants and a game ahead of the Rox. Giants don’t really have their eye on the WC, though. Focus is on winning the West. Best Rotation. Surprisingly decent defense. Bullpen which may be coming around, as Bautista, Casilla and Affeldt showed us last night. Oh, and did we mention, an offense which has gotten Poseyed up recently and has taken to raging, romping and rallying.
Nice outlook.
“Advancing backwards?!” Oxymoron alert! ;D
Bozo-No doubt about that. Sandoval continues to impress me. He has a bit of the old school player in him. Santana knocks him down last year. He dusts himself off amd goes yard. Kemp makes a BS move towards Lincecum and Sandoval is right there backing him up. He has the occasional brain fart in the field but rarely repeats a mistake. Sandoval, Posey, Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner. What a core to build on.
I’m amazed that the umps responded to Bochy’s visit. They actually remembered that random little turn around? I would have thought they would’ve needed instant replay to get that right. I’m serious.
Had to watch the game from a poker table in Reno. Couldn’t tell if it was intentional or not but I liked it. This pitching staff is great with nasty stuff, can you imagine how dominant they can be if they start stressing the inside pitch and using it as a real strategy and weapon??? I hope Posey had something to do with it since the baby face sure belies his competitiveness. Nothing wrong with wiping the smirk off any of the Bums faces.
Do it again, and again, and again……
I think Sandoval was actually hoping Kemp would charge the mound!!
Funny we were talking about this rivalry was the same as the old days blah blah blah….Well, last night’s game was reminiscent of games as a kid in the 60’s. One to savor, but I gotta admit I was ready to throw in the towel 5-1 and Casilla unable to throw a strike. Very cathartic in the end. I feel this erase a lot of bad shit that has happened.
Baggs account of Pablo ‘pulling’ out to protect his pitcher is funny. It would never have come down to Tim vs Kemp.
Game of the year! Intentional or not, Timmy hitting Kemp rattled the Dodgers. The game turned on that two pitch sequence.
Oh i think Tim hit Kemp on purpose. And it goes back to April when the Bums had a 9-3 lead late and Ass wipe Kemp decides to try and steal 2nd.Cardinal sin in baseball, and even though i hate the guy Casey Blake even got on his teammate with that bonehead play.Tim has too good of control to let 2 pitches in a row go wild.It was a message pitch.
BF, what is wierd to me is if they noticed it why don’t they call it? Does the manager have to point it out?
Dennis makes a good point. It looks like they got it wrong anyway. Not that I care. SF could use a break.
Not hyperbole to call this Game of the Year, possibly several years. Huge part of baseball, and why some don’t “get it”, is history, context, anticipation. In addition to great plays and performances (Flavor hit many of them), this game had all of the texture: rivalry, redemption, retaliation, recrimination, rejoicing, etc., etc.
Last two years, if Cy scuffled like this (velocity was off too) and on the road, Giants had about as much chance of ringing the bell as the two geeks in Sixteen Candles. Now? The trade SF swung – Posey, Burrell, and Bum for Bengie, DeRosa, and Wellemeyer – has provided all the juice of the 1987 deal with SD.
SF’s record is nearly the same as last year at this time. Totally different team, much more balanced, and far more fun to watch each inning.
Dirt…I think Bochy said he was gonna protest the game.So that got the rookie Ump freaked out who’s call it should be,so he decided to huddle up with the head crew chief ump Tim McClenand, the Umps were probably trying to protect the kid,but once Bochy made a big stink they had to act on it.
exactly what happened alleykat, once he said protest the rook ump did not want to get over-ruled by the league if he let Broxton stay in the game. He let the crew chief make the call..
Kruk said this morning that he really didn’t think Tim’s pitch was intentional and he’d say so if it was. Not sure if he was being truthful, but I definitely think it was intentional and could have been for a number of reasons, Rowand’s beaning, Kemp’s BS steal, or just the fact that Tim was frustrated. I know I mentioned it yesterday, but the book I just read, The Baseball Codes, deals with this subject in depth and discusses how a beaning can change the dynamic of a game and even an entire season. Kemp getting hit definitely fired up the team and I have a feeling it will continue well beyond last night.
Tim said as much after the game. He wouldn’t admit to anything but reading between the lines it was pretty obvious. And it was the stealing with a 9-3 lead in the 7th . . .
The only thing that I didn’t ike was Posey not getting out of his crouch to slow down Kemp. The ump was there, but he should have been as well.
If the game had been 2-1, 3-2, something like that I could see it NOT being intentional. But they were down 5-1 in the 5th, Tim was frustrated and almost gone. I think he just said, “Fuck it, might as well hit this asswipe, maybe it fires us up.”
“slow down Kemp”???? WTF are you talking about? Kemp was coming about as fast as *hot liquid magma*. Posey could have eaten a snack, taken a nap, flossed his teeth and still made it out there before that meandering, half-meant puss approach Kemp gave Timmy……
Kemp wasn’t going to do anything. Posey could’ve reacted a little faster, but he really didn’t need to.
What was very impressive about Buster though was when the home plate ump came out to the mound after a brush back or beanball (an’t remember if it was Timmy’s, but I think it was Bautista’s), and started getting in the pitcher’s face. Buster took charge and you could see him telling the ump to settle down. This is a 23 year old kid, still wet behind the ear, and he’s telling the ump to calm down??? Absolutely fantastic. The kid has arrived.
I thought it was funny that F.P. tried to codify that unwritten rule last night. F.P. said that you don’t steal when up by five, after 5 innings. Like there’s an exact number to it. Hilarious.
F.P. also said he was surprised that Rowand didn’t charge the mound after he was hit.
He was “surprised”? F.P. truly belongs to the “dumb jock” school of broadcasting.
If F.P. is serious about being a quality broadcaster, he has to get beyond parroting hackneyed stuff. Krukow was successful in doing that. Remember how Krukow used the word “swang” when he first started broadcasting? He dumped that when he realized how uneducated that made him sound. Krukow is actually quite sharp. I’m not so sure about F.P.
The funny thing to me was after the umps made up their minds on what to do, Casey Blake started arguing. They should have tossed his ass.
I missed the last hour of the game, so I had to see all the hijinks on the highlights show. Best game this year for sure, maybe the last couple of years, given the competition and locale. Too many subplots and turning point ABs to cover. To rub out the Dojairs in the 9th at Chavez like that was just sweet, and all too rare. It brought back the rivalry to heights I lamented earlier in the day were gone for me. And, of course Timmy hit Kemp on purpose. It was a perfect drilling, a message, not intended to injure. That set the whole turnaround in motion…
By far the best Baseball game I’ve ever been to. Of course the final score helped it be…Amazing to come home last night and read all your takes on the game. Also amazes, the different points of view from watching on TV or being there live…I could go back and hit the reply button on so many individual comments, but, why ruin your fun with facts!
If you ever feel like getting wasted, here’s a nice drinking game:
Just watch Frank Paul on the CSN postgame show and then listen to him on KNBR. Take a sip every time he talks about his relationship with a player or tells an anecdote from his playing days. Drink a shot whenever he talks about his one year of coaching the San Jose Giants.
I swear he talks about his playing days more in one night than Kruk and Kuip combined in a month.
3 bagger,Yeah i remember that as well.Posey definitely took charge there liked a savvy vet.”Hey we have his under control so take a hike look”.
Hey for a guy who is supposedly Joe Torre’s heir apparent,Don Mattingly hasn’t exactly distinguished himself the couple of times he’s had the chance to manage.Besides the blunder last night,Mattingly once had the embarrassing gaffe of having the Bums bat out of order,In a exhibition game against the Diamondbacks in Taiwan. Not the brightest light bulb in the box.
Can’t wait for tonight’s finale. Zito loves pitching in LA.
According to the Yahoo account, the plate ump did catch it.
“No, no, no!” Mattingly heard plate umpire Adrian Johnson shout. ”You can’t go back.”
By then, however, Mattingly had covered the two steps back onto the mound.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy came out of the first-base dugout, pointing.
”He can’t do that!” Bochy yelled.
Rowand gets his face shattered with no retaliation and then gets plunked again last night. Will there be additional response? I’m glad cooler heads prevailed and SF pulled out the win but what does this say about Gamer’s standing in the club house?
Rowand did the right thing, staye din the game and had the big bunt and fired his team up. Now if he gets hit again tonight (probably not starting) that is another thing…
I give Bochy big props for last night. He way paying attention, called out Mattingly’s gaffe, and flummoxed the umps into booting Broxton. I don’t know if more than one or two other managers would have caught that, maybe none. Though too much went on in that game to give him total credit for the win, he gets the most. Today, the Bonehead rules…
Yes, Zum. It’s puzzling why networks and radio are trying to prop up F.P. as the next local mouth. All the “code” shit, “back in my day”, “play the game as it should be played”, and related name-dropping has become very stale. Unless it’s someone like Buck O’Neill (RIP), I don’t care what a marginal journeyman said to Dutch Rennert in a meaningless August game in Montreal’s empty Olympic stadium.
Excellent summary, Jed. I don’t hate F.P. but man he annoys me with all the attention he tries to draw to himself.
I never would’ve imagined that Bochy had a little Billy Martin in him. What’s amazing is that it’s the second time he’s burned the Dodgers on that little technicality.
Actually the beanings worked out great for us.Tim gets some revenge and is only warned,Kershaw drills Rowand and get’s tossed along with Torre and both will be suspended and miss games after both benches were warned.Lovin it…Oh by the way Fuck the Dodgers!
Snarkk..Maybe Boch is the only one.Cause this is the second time he’s done that to a manager on that blunder. And even better it was against the Bums last time as well. Back in 2006 then Dodger manager Grady Little did the same stupid move with Brad Penny on the mound.
Kat, you’re probably right. He must have really been paying attention the first time he pulled out this rule. I certainly didn’t know anything about the sanctity of the mound in this visit rule — and from what I hear, nobody else with a baseball head — even Kruk and Kuip, were aware of that detail. God knows I bash the Boch, but I’ll gladly hand it to him on this one. One of the best “plays” of the year…
MVP award for a rookie kid catcher called up well into the season? Ain’t gonna happen ~ except in the hearts and minds of Giants fans everywhere.
Are the LaBumbos demoralized yet?
FP Santangaroid is a 17 year old in a 43 year old body. That’s why his observations are a dime a dozen, often juvenile. He does get brownie points for being engaged to an ex-Playmate 20 years his junior. On the radio, he’s not going to last. On TV, he’s got pretty good looks, he may last longer, as long as he doesn’t get overexposed. His very first guest on his KNBR night chat show was Chavez of the A’s, they had a mutual massage session, and that about sums up his interview style. He can’t carry a broadcast. Compared to Kruk as Baryshnikov, FP is the dancing bear…
Stix, there’s a lot of season left and Posey’s playing a critical role like a seasoned vet on a team that’s slowly clawing its way back into the playoff race because of him. Plus, his game is so complete offensively/defensively and the position is so important, he has to be in the discussion for ROY if he keeps this up.
Bozo, when Blake was talking to the umpire, he seemed like he was trying to schmooze the umpire, with a cheesy grin, like “Ah come on now, Blue, you can’t let that be the deciding factor in the game. Come on now, Blue.” Like, I’m Casey Blake, I’m someone of status you should listen to in this situation. You should cut us a break, because we’re the DODGERS. These Dodgers really believe their own hype. Their two division titles the last couple of years make them the cock of the walk, in their opinion.
Come on now, Blue. I’m Casey Blake.
Snarkk, I think the “being engaged to a bimbo” actually sounds better in theory than it is in reality.
Put it this way, if they make it to the altar, I’m not betting the over if it’s at a year…
Gotta luv last night’s win. Looked at a coupla Dodger blogs for shits and giggles. They’re bashing LA on a shotgun basis — especially Mattingly, but also Torre, Broxton, Sherril, McCourt, and Colletti (for being a Giant plant). One called for the return of Lasorda as savior. Good stuff….
Mac, I can dig a Billy Martin comparison on that play, but on another issue Bochy was totally different than Martin. Bochy has to be admired for sticking to his guns and not pitching Wilson last night. Martin and a lot of other managers, IMO, would have had Wilson in there in the 9th inning in a heartbeat. Bochy is to be admired for not putting last night’s crucial win ahead of Wilson’s well-being for the rest of the season and career.
Swick: I’d already given Buster props for ROY ~ at least a couple times over the past few. If he maintains a pace anywhere near what he has done since taking over the Tools of Ignorance on a regular basis, he should be a shoo-in for that award. I was talking MVP and, to reiterate, it is not gonna happen with a rookie catcher called up partways into the season. But if do feel that most Giants fans may be on board as feeling he deserves it after another 68 games or so.
My misread, sorry. Yeah, no way in hell he gets MVP unless his AVG is around .400 at the end of the year.
Another goody from last night. Affeldt looks to be resurgent coming off the AS break. That curve is getting it’s bite back, and more in control. If he can find a groove even close to last season, the Pen looks WAY better for the second half…
Zoom: Good points on Bochy holding back on Wilson last night. Good thing that Affeldt has reverted to ’09 form so that he felt comfortable with that option.
From Henry S.
“I’m getting a sense the Giants are not in on Werth in supposed three-way deal with Phils, Astros. I still predict Gs will trade for reliever.”
Thank you. We need another arm!
Stix, There’s No way in hell Bochy would have been tempted to use Wilson last night. Romo was warming up if needed.
sorry guys, Lincecum’s pitch was definitely not intentional;. Caught Posey off guard and did you see Tim’s reaction? He turned in disgust that he hit him. Tim is a lover man not a fighter. There is no way Tim ever, ever throws trying to hit someone.
You guys are just fired up and over-reading the situation…if a pitcher aims to hit a batter, he walks toward the hitter after the pitch to stand his ground. After the pitch, Tim turned away from the mound. But he showed some cajones not taking Kemp’s stink eye. Something is going down tonight!
Maybe in years past, but not with the new rules. A pitcher, manager and team will do everything they can to show and claim there was no intention.
Yeah- someone could make the claim that Tim “over-acted” to show he didn’t mean anything by it. Put on a little Shakespearian show.
Man, Torres smoked that double. It almost carried out of the park.
My intial reaction to Kemp getting hit was that Lincecum did not intend to do it, and that’s based solely on his reaction after he threw the pitch. But I guess only he knows for sure.
What a heck of a ballgame. I wish I could have watched it. And major kudos to Bochy for picking up on what Mattingly did. As I understand iit, two visits to the mound in the same inning by the manager, and the pitcher has to come out. If that’s the case, and the HP ump noticed it (no,no,no!), why does Bochy have to come out and bring it to his attention? The call should be automatic. I’ve not been very impressed with the umpiring in the last couple of weeks.
And GO ZITS!! GO GIANTS!!! SWEEP DEM BUMS!!!
“Tim is a lover man not a fighter. ”
“He’s a lover, not a fighter, but he’s also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas.”
Stay thirsty and continue to plunk those Dodger fucks.
Zum, You might be right on the I’m Casey Blake dammit. If he would have stomped his little foot while having his hissy fit, it would have been clearer to me. I still think Blue should have tossed him on GP alone.
Timmy’s plunk to Kemp was right in the lower/mid rib cage area. If that was unintentional, it was unintentionally placed exactly, via fasball and not crooked pitch, in one of the more regular places plunking gets done when intentional. Too coincidental for me. As for the post-plunk Timmy actions of disgust with himself, the mound was about only 5 miles from Hollywood. Though not Oscar-worthy, pitchers have been known to act from time to time in such cases. I wouldn’t put Timmy, a smart cookie, beyond employing some thespian skills as part of a planned plunk…
Exactly. he has to act and say it was unintentional or he gets ejected, suspended and fined.
As far as hitting Kemp, he did it a good time and it no doubt was for the SB w/6 run lead… now: it’s bullshit that it fired them up to launch the comeback, that’s a child’s dream, as is the idiotic notion of doing it “agaon and again”. In fact, what DID spur the rally was Torre or Martin stoooooopidly having Kershaw hit Rowand..then their best relief pitcher goes two, leaving him unavailable tionight, and all of our best weapons were still on the bench for the 9th- and STILL Bochy crafted the winning rally without a hit from any of the 3: Rent and Rowand, the Despicable Two, playing huge roles …
along wirth minor league mediocrity Andres Torres. It was a brilliantly played and managed game. Bow before the Bonehead and shut the fuck up come line up time…
Props to Bochy for good managing, but you’re telling me that if Huff and Ishi had been in the lineup over Rowand and Rent, they couldn’t have gotten hit by a pitch, laid down a bunt and taken a well-timed walk? Rent and Rowand still blow.
JBat – What did your wife think of the game?
3bagger, actually she’s been working her tail off putting the finishing touches on the final edits for her book. She’s going to become a published author in a few months.
So, we really haven’t talked about it. Since I tend to get a little nasty when it comes to talking about the Dodgers, we kind of have a tacit agreement when it comes to G v. D’s game; I don’t rub it in if the Giants win, and vice versa for her. 😀
Not to say I did’t enjoy the hell out of the last two games! 😀
The wife and I pretty much have the same agreement when it comes to Giants/A’s games, but I don’t know if I would have been able to resist a little rub after a game like last night’s.
As far as bitching about possible LU go…sometimes, it’s not bad to have a choice of when you can PH for somebody in a key situation…If the guys you wanted playing from the get go are in, you can’t pick and choose when they come up. Leave the “managing” to the manager. That’s why he is, and you’re not.
Uh, he’s the manager because he’s played and coached baseball his whole life. I’m not because I haven’t.
I hear you on being able to insert players at the right time, but Ishi never got into the game and Huff took an intentional wlak that would have been given to Rowand in the same situation.
Ishi was at 1B in the bot 9th…and I’m not goin to argue with emotion…
It’s funny, she can be as doomeristic about the Dodgers as I can about the Giants, and the Dodgers have won, what, four WS in her lifetime? She always thinks they’re going to blow it. Maybe it’s a baseball fan thing, but I wish I had the problem of dealing with four championships. Hell, I’d take one. 😀
Listen up and fucking pay attention this tiome: he’s been spotting Rowand, Burrell, and Nate in the OF with excellent results the past month. SPOTTING, get it? And Rent has had just spot starts as well, 5 in the last 2 weeks. They have roles now, NOT as regulars. You’r being a fucking idiot, stop doing that. They both contributed to a HUGE win, and the Giants DO NOT have 8 guys that can be thrown out there against lefties or righties everyday. Enjoy the games boys, leave the managing to the cool heads: Bochy and Mikey…
Hey, I didn’t know you and Bochy had a horse running opening day at Del Mar. I’mneverwrong (IRE) is 20-1 on the ML in the 6th today. Let’s have Rowand and Renteria run over to place our wagers. That way we’ll be assured they won’t be in tonight’s starting lineup. 🙂
“they couldn’t have gotten hit by a pitch, laid down a bunt and taken a well-timed walk?” You and I will never fucking know. We DO know that they don’t get the runs in the 9th to win WITHOUT the walk and the bunt. Tip your cap, ThreeWad.
OK, I did a couple posts needlessly. Bottom line is that there is not one motherfucking thing to be bitching about this morning unless your banana was too soft. If you’re bitching about anything from last night, you should just be smothered now. CHIEF!!!
OK TF…I forgot that you’re GOD and everyone else is a fuckwad. Last night was one of the best Giants games in my lifetime. Not bitching, but I’m not going to start sucking Rowand and Rent for doing so much less than what they should be able to do and are also being paid to do..
What WILL you suck them for?
Listen, they contributed to a thrilling win. No need to get on their pole, but definitely a time to get off their cases for a day, shithead.
Rent had the 1st rbi for them, and hit the ball hard all night, walked to get the tying run in scoring position…he’s over 300 but the knocks on him keep coming…
Hitting 300? Yeah, and he hit nearly 800 for the first two weeks. Check his recent stats.
They are on the roster, their playing time has been reduced.. but they WILL get some starts. That may annoy you if you don’t understand the game. That’s why I’m trying to help you, 3Wad. Let me take care of the unnerstandun’ thang, you just watch and learn.
you can only help those who wanna be helped!
It’s not Bochy’s fault they were signed for way more than they’re worth. I GET IT. And of course he has to play them now and then, but if you look at their stats against Kershaw, they were 0-8 combined. Huff has been the most consistent hitter on the team all year and Ishi has been hot. There’s a chance that if they were starting, the Giants wouldn’t have had to come back to begin with. The 1st inning double Timmy gave up down the rf line might have been caught by Ishi who is a gold glove caliber 1st baseman. Sando is better at 3rd.
I can’t believe you’re making me sound like a doomer after the best win of the season.
In 159 AB, Edgar is hitting .296 with a good .351 OBP. His pop has suffered, his OPS is only .715, still WAY better than the less maligned but far WORSE hitter Freddy Sanchez. Edgar’s average, OBP, and OPS are all ABOVE average for NL shortstops. And while his range is not what it once was, he’s sure handed and steady. Overlooked in last night’s game was the TERRIBLE play by Furcal on Uribe’s grounder. He took a ridiculous circle route to the ball, leaving himself with the off balance throw. I’ve noted this deficiency before, and it helped cost the Dodgers the game. Awful job.
If Rent hangs onto Buster’s throw to second, it’s an out. His .296 ave has been on decline since April.
but that was a short-hop and difficult play for any shortstop…
“I never would’ve imagined that Bochy had a little Billy Martin in him.”
Macdog, I love that line . . . I wonder how many of us knew of this obscure rule (besides Twin . . . I mean that sincerely without a bit of sarcasm)? OK, now who amongst us spotted it’s violation last night? Maybe Twin and I bet that’s it.
The larger lesson for Flappers is this – Bochy is the manager and is in the dugout, while we are in our boxers, beer in right hand, nacho in the other hand, and our fat ass in a Lazy Boy recliner.
JB, the only conclusion we can draw is that the umps were going to let it slide, which is wrong.
Btw- like a lot of you, I still can’t believe the ump’s quote the other day trying to justify the bad call in Sunday’s game. He called Ishi out because “the Mets catcher made a decent effort to get the tag on him.” He decided to reward the Mets catcher for his effort. Wow.
“They are on the roster, their playing time has been reduced”
Agree TF. It’s amazing the point has to be argued. Any team would love to have Rowand as a 4th OF and Renteria an backup at SS.
Bochy can’t just let them rot on the bench.
Quick. Find that “any” team that would love to have him and trade him there…
Don’t think I saw this mentioned, but Molina was Player of the Week.
“Huff took an intentional wlak that would have been given to Rowand in the same situation.”
There’s no way of knowing that.
Actually, I knew the rule but didn’t see Mattingly do it. I give Bochy more credit for watching so closely than just knowing the rule, I’d expect a veteran manager to know it. He’s a little more alert than our burgeoning army of Room Bers would like to acknowledge…
For the record, I think Bochy is a damned good manager. Definitely better than average. And it’s not his fault he has Rent and Rowand on the team and has to find playing time for the. I just wish it would be as pinch hitters, not starters.
“Huff took an intentional wlak that would have been given to Rowand in the same situation.”Rowand would neveer have been in “the same situation”. God, that’s dumb. He was never going to PH the RH Rowand against Huey.Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh. AND: it’s entirely arguable that they would walk Rowand to get to Torres even if that were the caes. As I said, ThreeWad: watch, listen, learn…
Everything is arguable in hindsight TwinWad. All I’m saying is that Rent and Rowand did nothing spectacular that other (better) starters on the team couldn’t have done. It’s arguable that the other (better) starters would have done more.
Hey, you’ve only got 2 1/2 more months to kick Renteria around, then he’ll be out of your life forever.
3 1/2 months, I mean. Can’t forget the playoffs!
What Cuzzi did by rewarding the Met’s catcher with the out because he “made a decent effort to get the tag on him.” is outrageous. Almost as outrageous as when kids get participation medals or ribbons just for trying or making the effort. Fuck that! You didn’t win? We’re not giving you anything for trying. Just more pussification of America I say. Get rewarded for doing something, not for just trying.
“Do, or do not. There is no try.”

I agree, Dennis.
