Torres deserves some MVP votes at season’s end. Not all GIANTS are great, big, hulking honchos. Also kudos to Ray for a clean IP and he gets a deserved W. Only other pitcher worthy of respect tonight was Romo.

  42. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:24 pm

I know I bring this up every time it happens but it was also huge for Wilson to get his shit back together after giving up the lead. A lot of closers go on to give up the game. At least he kept the tie and gave them a shot to still win.

    • JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I can live with the blown saves when the team end up winning. Whiffing Helms was huge, but I still say they should have put Ugly on.

  43. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Sanchez had 4 groundouts, 7 Ks and TEN fly-outs. He was NOT keeping that ball down and away, just judging from those simple stats. I wonder if he doesn’t get dangled now. But tonight’s performance served as a reverse showcase. Clearly, he is dropping to #5 starter status, with Zito at #4, Bumgarner as #3, Cain two and Timmy hanging in there as the occasionally challenged ace.

  44. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Agreed, Twin. Wilson did not utterly collapse. Saw that a few times when Ron Davis was the closer for Minnesota. And he was due, maybe even overdue for a stinker. Maybe it was because of those cleats. lol. Like any good closer, though, he needs to let that water keep flowing under the bridge. Provided Madison goes his usual 7 w.o. much damage and these hitters keep on clocking the Fish pitchers, maybe BW gets tomorrow off. He needs it.

  45. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Fly balls are what you WANT here, Stix. He pitched well until the 7th and left with a 4 run lead. He MAY be a 5 here but he’s an EZ 3 almost anywhere else. Total BS, the flak this guy gets.

  46. max808's avatar max808 said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I don’t get pitching to Uggla. Was that stubborn macho bullshit becauise he went deep on him last night? Stupid with Eli Helms on deck.

  47. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:35 pm

As Uggla’s pop showed, and Andres’ fly, the ball was really flying out to LF today. I don’t blame Sanchez at all for throwing to contact. This was NOT a bad outing for him.

  48. wswinb4igo's avatar wswinb4igo said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:36 pm

He had given up all of 3 hits entering the 7th. He needed to go 1 more inning. He didn’t.

  49. JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Total BS, Twin? The guy is a gas can waiting to explode. If the Giants get to the playoffs and need a big win, he’s the last starter I want on the hill. And yes, that includes Zits.

  50. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Just for the heck of it and for the record, even if Schierholtz didn’t touch second, I think the run scores. It would be the second out, and Torres would lose his hit. The play would be a force out of some kind. Maybe the official ruling would be batter running out of the baseline.
Also, after Schierholtz rounds second, if Torres had touched second, I think he gets credit for the ground rule double. But how can you get to second when you’re being mauled by your teammates? It cost Torres a double, but what the heck. No one really cares. The Giants won!!

When judging starting pitcher performances, the most basic thing I tend to go with first, and the oldest cliche, but valid- did that starter give your team a chance to win that day? The answer is yes for J. Sanchez today. It’s a lot different giving up the 5 runs after you have a big lead than giving up 5 runs in the first two innings and putting your team in a deep hole.

  57. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:46 pm

You miss my point. It’s easier to get those 9 runs if you’re not digging your way out of a hole.

Twin has mentioned this before. When you’re in you’re 20’s and you’re a broadcaster you’ve got no stories to tell. So flemming finally gets his shot to tell a story (from the hof induction ceremony) and he fiddles around with it then just blurts it out. Dude needs to work on his story telling skills

  59. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:47 pm

In other words, J. Sanchez was a big part of the reason it WAS a 7 run lead late in the game.

  60. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:47 pm

He did what he’s supposed to do with a fucking 7 run lead. So what if he isn’t in the playoff rotation? If he was supposed to be our ace, it’s one thing. HE’S THE FUCKING 4!
That is out of control fucking bullshit, John.

  63. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 7:50 pm

  70. oldsealsfan's avatar oldsealsfan said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Yes, Loo, maybe I can. If Schierhope doesn’t touch 2nd and they call for the ball he is out. That makes 2 outs. If Torres touches 1st and the run scores the game is over. Giants win. You can be sure that the Fish would still be bitching if that was not the correct call.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:06 pm

But if EVERYBODY kept running would Torres get a ground rule double (2 RBIs), and would the second (meaningless) run count?

      • giant head's avatar giant head said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:08 pm

once the winning run scores, game over..you cant score an extra run unless it was a home run….

      • giant head's avatar giant head said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:11 pm

the only thing that has to happen is for Torres to touch first to avoid a force out. With only one out, they would have had to force Schierholtz at second as well. But with ground-rule double, the ball is out of play. The Marlins cant retrieve a ball out of play to create a force at second or first…

I would not trade JSanchez! Reading the trade rumors, they allege the Giants are still heavily in on Dunn. Dunn would require a starting pitcher. JSanchez would be the trade bait. For a potential rental player in Dunn, I would not trade JSanchez!

Would likely take J. Sanchez and maybe Ishikawa or Burriss to get Dunn. I vote no…

  73. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:05 pm

    • giant head's avatar giant head said, on July 28, 2010 at 8:15 pm

totally agree Flav…I knew the spin that the Giants was in on Cantu was total BS. Sabean is trying to get someone like the Rockies to bite on Cantu, whom I view as farily worthless for us. Sabena may be yanking some chains on Dunn as well.

I would love to be a GM for a day so that when a team like the Mariners calls me and offers Lopes and Aardsma for Panda, I would just start uncontrollably laughing in the phone for 10 minutes until the guy hung up on me…
