That Game…..
Wow. There would have been any words other than swear words to describe that game if we had lost. I only caught the tail end of the Kuip Show but he said that had there been 2 outs instead of 1 the winning run would not have counted because of Nate’s bonehead move not to touch 2nd base. Can you imagine that scene playing out?
I’m done with all this *Orange Shoes* talk but I wouldn’t put it past Wilson to keep running them out there. Any sane person would understand this is getting to be a distraction and ditch them. But closers do their own thing, often with the “look at me” mentality. There’s also a little “I don’t back down to anyone” mentality going on, too. I guess we’ll see how this plays out…..
I thought it would have been better for Wilson and the shoe controversery if he actually put them away and nailed down the save…why was Uggla even pitched to in that situation with Helms on deck???
I still felt we were going to win even giving the tying run up there.
If anyone can find that rule, I dont see how a ground rule double with bases loaded with twp outs would have resulted in a third out by anyone not touching second…
Look up Fred Merkle….
Criminy, Nate IS dumber than a box of rocks. . . .
Yeah, that would have beens a HUGE fuckup.
Merkel-esque . . .
Running out of the baseline . . .
I don’t know where yer plagarizing the stuff from, Ted, but it’s getting weirder and weirder . . .
According to MLBTR, we and the ChiSox are “pushing harder” than the Yanks for Dunn. Really? Two months for a guy whose personal house of horrors (AT&T) would now become his home ballpark. I don’t think so. Go get another arm for the pen, Brian. At least then I could shut the fuck up about that.
Yeah Chuck, between that and the caught stealing on Sunday, maybe Nate’s close to becoming the new “Bonehead.”
Morning rumors have the Phils close to getting Oswalt. If that goes down, the NL gets a little more interesting.
Hey, at least it isn’t the Dodgers getting him . . .
“Interesting” wasn’t the first word that came to mind when I heard that Oswalt was soon to be a Phillie in regards to the NL. Challenging, difficult, formidable…
Oswalt that is . . .
Fuck this ‘slow down’ shit.
The whole shoe thing is a joke. Who the hell cares what damn shoes the guy is wearing?
As for pitching to Uggla, either walk him or throw him a chase me breaking ball. Like Bochy said, that was too good a pitch for a guy who is raking right now. Even Uggla said after the game “he started early” anticipating the heater. Even a decent breaking ball prolly would’ve whiffed him.
OK, Rule 7.05 (f) states that:
“Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out (key words here), advance –
(f) two bases for a ball that bounces into the stands…”
So the letter of the rule is that once the ball goes out of play, all runners advance two bases without liability of being put out. So regardless of Nate not touching the base, it would not matter. He could not be liable for an out.
There are different rules about a home run hit to win a game and one runner passing another, but that does not come into play apparently on a ground-rule double.
That “I don’t back down to anyone” mentality almost cost the game. Stupid ass Mets let Pujols beat them last night.
I couldn’t believe they pitched to him.
Lost in his heroics of late are some of the dumdass base running decisions Torres has displayed recently.
I don’t want to bag on him beacause he’s been the difference maker on this club and I am glad he came through again last nigh but he should have tagged and been at 3rd on Ishikawa’s deep fly in the previous inning.
So Wilson likes to wear clown shoes. So what? I would have liked to see him run out the full orange kicks again last night. Basically give old Bud the big FU. Oh, well. Dude is a bit of a nut job. He should have walked Uggla but bottom line SF got another W and scored 10 runs. Crazy.
totally right ioon the tag up, there was no need to start running to third. He thought it was over the right-fielder’s head, which if it was, he wouldhave scored easily. But MVP regardless…
There’s no way on earth that Bochy would have allowed Wilson out there with the full orange shoes again. He’s just not that kind of a coach. Wilson’s smart enough to know that he shouldn’t even bother. But you know that’s what he wanted to do.
With 10 runs scored last night, the Giants leapfrogged several NL teams in RS for the season. They’re now 6th. 7th in OBP, 8th in SLG and OPS. Before the season, I figured that if they just reached the lower-middle (i.e. 10th-12th) tier of the NL in those categories, they would make the playoffs. I didn’t anticipate the bullpen collapse. That makes the hitting more crucial.
I don’t care what moves the Phillies might make. If the Giants get another arm and can end up around 6th-8th in those categories, they stand a good chance. The division is easily within reach so I’m not worrying too much yet about their position in the WC race. Beat the Padres and the division belongs to the Giants.
Oh yeah, and Torres is the fucking man!
Also…I don’t want July to come to an end…
You’d think 16 out of 20 would get you past the friggin’ Padres. Can’t believe they’re still 4 back in the LC. And how often do you notice a man’s shoes?
I would have made ’em look like Tony the Tiger shoes . . .
REALLY fuck with ’em . . .
How often does a guy wear *bright* orange?
He can’t wear shoes like that. They could be totally distracting to the hitter. When a pitcher lifts his leg and it’s in motion if it’s fucking orange that’s just not fair to the hitter….
I agree Swick. It comes down to the Giants taking care of business against San Diego. They do that, the look real good for the division.
What, the A’s and their white shoes weren’t distracting? The shoes were the same color as the ball. that would be HARDER to pick up . . .
Then why weren’t the shoes an issue in the ASG, when home field advantage in the WS is at stake? Way too much made of it.
Loo…Wasn’t that the line Morgan Freeman used in Shawshank Redemption?
Good call, AK.
Very good, Kat. I was waiting. I throw shit out like that all the time. Ted is real good at catching it.
Wish I had logged on earlier. Good katch kat
When does Torres gets his Benard contract?
Anyone know/hear what is SF’s best July record?
And in this POTD fantasy of high-fiving three Marlins while teaming the transgender Anderson Cooper blowup doll at a Broadway strip joint, can Pablo hit RHP again?
I thought Pablo’s problem was vs. LHP.
Correct, .379 last year and .240 now. Thanks.
Just for the record, my tirade about “faggots” yesterday was lifted from Falling Down.
Oh yeah. That was the nazi played by Frederic Firrest, right?
Firrest? Forrest
Expecting another good showing from Rowand today vs the Fish. He’s 6 for 7 w/ 2 doubles, homer and 4 RBI off of Anibal Sanchez. Renteria also 4 for 7.
Little more than 48 Hrs. till the trade deadline. Sabean better be working on getting somebody.
And I don’t mean Jack Cates or Reggie Hammond either.
Women look at a mans shoes….and hands. All the time.
I was watching MANSWERS and they showed that to be a myth. The only way women can be sure of…well…you know…is if he’s a Giants fan
Man, there are a lot of guys in the game who answer to the name Sanchez these days. Today, its Bumgarner vs Annabelle of that ilk. Probably a good thing that Anna is not on the same team as Lady Billingsley. Might be fights in the dressing room over mirrors and such. I wonder which name has been the weirdest in MLB history. Right off the top of the head one that roars right in was an early 20th Century player name of Bill Wambsgans. Without cheating, now, and looking em up, can anybody here top that monicker?
Ethier
Milton Bradley
Merkin
Yeah Swick, and he changed his name to that.
Rube Waddell
Anybody ketch that monster Grandslam HR that Brandon Phillips of the Reds hit in Milwaukee? Phillips Smacked a 450 ft shot that landed in the giant yellow slide before popping out.”It felt like I he a tennis ball or golf ball, Phillips said”I think I hit every seam, every word of Major League Baseball on there and the logo.I hit every part of that ball.”
I can’t wait for the Giants to pick up a player so that all of the doomers can crawl out of the woodwork and complain about Sabean. Doesn’t matter who he gets or what he gives up, it will be a bad decision in the minds of a group of people. The same people would also be angry and call for his firing if he didn’t do anything.
Oh, brother. And the same homers will defend his dumbass, no matter what he does. Get past this 4th grade cliche and discuss specifics. Giants have been great in July overcome Sabean’s earlier choices.
Giants did not start this July streak until the guys Sabean selected for opening day – Wellemeyer, Bengie, DeRosa, Rowand – were gone or benched and then replaced by guys he deemed inadequate – Torres, Posey, Bum, Burrell. But now he’ll be credited for “finding” them. But, yeah, go trade for Garko or another middle reliever. Rowand is having his annual spike, to end in .240. Enjoy.
But, yeah, Sabean predicted Buster’s 21-game hitting streak and Bum’s 2.43 era when he stuck them in Fresno and opted for Bengie and Todd. Great talent man. “We didn’t know what we had.”
Speaking of the deadline, having the hottest team in baseball heading into the deadline must give Sabean at least a little bargaining power, right? You gotta make the other team believe that you’re capable of walking away from the best deal they put on the table. Let’s hope he uses that to his full advantage.
In the offseason, if they try and pick up a free agent bat who is leary of playing at AT&T, Sabean should tell him to ask Ugla what he thinks. Man is he driving the ball well. It sure would be good to see right handed power on our team again. I was a big proponent of them going after Holiday last year after watching what he did at AT&T during the HR Derby. I think a lefty reliever is what they need most right now, but screw Dunn. I want a right handed power bat.
Sanchez is the new Martinez, stix.
Doug Gwosdz (Nickname; Eyechart)
Swick, nothing like the power to walk away when negotiating. Spot on with the response to any move made or not made. Damn that Sabean building this contending team!
I’m not seeing much chatter out there though so no doubt Sabean has something working.
I know it’s not going to be Willingham but a guy can hope, right?
Over a couple years, both here and at the Splash i was a huge proponent of the Giants trading for Uggla. Didn’t happen. Now, i suspect the price would be waaaay through the roof. 3bg: Good point as to how Uggla likes hitting at China Basin. Tradewise, i’m sticking to my guns: No huge need for a big bopper. Concentration should be on Willingham and a solid, stolid 7th or 8th inning set-up man. The latter has to be doable, with two more teams, the Rox and the Angeliques, now realizing they are pretty much out of it for this season.
Sweet, it sounds like the Giants are out of the Cantu race! Rangers getting close.
Yeah, D.J. I’d forgotten all about ‘Eyechart’ till you reminded me. Poles are a brave and tenacious group of people but i really wonder where they learned to spell. Back in the 70’s when it was announced that Jimmy Carter had selected his new National Security Advisor: One Zbigniew Brzezesinski, my first thought was that a monkey had got loose on the keyboard.
Funny. Was Hrbek a Pole?
I was in a punk band with a dude whose last name was Kozlowski. A door-to-door salesman butchered his name after seeing it on the mailbox, calling him Kozlo Swicky. We thought it was funny enough to name our band after him. That’s where swickman comes from. Fucking Poles and their hard-to-pronounce names.
“I am not a Pollack. People from Poland are Poles. They are not Pollacks. But what I am is one hundred percent American. I’m born and raised in the greatest country on this earth and I’m proud of it. And don’t you ever call me a Pollack. ”
—Stanley Kowalski. And of course:
“Hey STELLAAAAAAAAAA!!!”
Great band name.
Thanks! It was hard to pronounce, but it was never difficult to find us on Google.
BP arm is most important. Willingham? Sounds good to me. I was a bit bummed on Posednik to LA. Cantu or Dunn? No thanks.
Sabean must be using those talks as smoke screen. Colletti snatching up Posednik looks like he may have outmanuevered the old boss though.
Willingham would be great, but a lefty reliever is a must.
Co Co Crisp . . .
Do we really want Sabes to take another flier on a guy who’s been injured all year?
Chuck was just listing another weird name. He wasn’t suggesting acquring him
Whew. That makes me feel better.
“I don’t want to bag on him because…” Well, if you don’t want to. you don’t have to. Maybe you should tag up first, Dirt
Players go by the UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED rule of thumb as far as tagging on a fly ball- and you don’t tag if you don’t think it will be caught. And he would nort score at all, let alone EASILYif he’s standing on second when the ball is missed. Actually saw this with Lonnie Smith in the WS years ago…
But it’s a new day, guys. Lotsa might fine bitchin’ yet to come. I love rhe smell of it in the mornin’…
Yeah, fucking bummer, Jeddiot. They’re gonna have to pay Andres some bucks next year. I’ll guess you have less of a problem with Huff..
Torres RF, F.Sanchez 2B, Huff LF, Posey C, Uribe 3B, Sandoval 1B, Rowand CF, Renteria SS, Bumgarner P
An odd psychological phenomenon. No one bitches about lineups when the team is winning
Whitey isn’t in the line-up AGAIN. Sheeet.
I told you months ago, maybe even LAST spring that Uggla would hit 40 if he played here. When will you guys learn that it IS a power hitters ballpark. Always has been. Pay fucking attention. How quickly you forget, even when we’re talkin’ one of your whipping boys: RICH AURILIA. That’s all you need to know.
Huff and Torres earned their money, Twinept. By contrast, your hero Mr. Sabean has spent 15 fucking years handing out fat retirement cupcakes to useless relics.
Gee, looks like $20M is batting 7th and 8th today …
What GM is batting 1.000, Jed? It’s not news to say that Rowand and Renteria are expensive.
Of course not, Swick. Win some, lose some. Yet owners actually fire GMs who often spend half of their payroll on four or five platoon players.
Brian is not a respected or desired GM. No team has tried to lure him away from SF. No team has offered a job when his contract was up. Yet local homers are always trying to prop him up. Baffling.
Pablo’s 2008 is a great example. Giants never imagined this kid, signed at 17 and 15 HR in nearly 1400 prior PAs in minors, would explode in 2008 and be the team’s featured hitter in 2009. No one. One of hundreds of darts tossed at a board, hope for the best. But homers hail Pablo as a crowning Sabean achievement … even though Sabean consistently fails to evaluate $MM free agents based on their actual experience in MLB. Nuts.
As much as I’d like to see Rent sit, so Ishi can play 1st and Panda 3rd, you can’t argue with his and Rowand’s numbers against Anabelle.
“No one bitches about lineups when the team is winning”
Actually, Ted, they do and will. They just need what should be obvious at a glance, to get beaten into them with repeated heavy blows to the face and neck regions. Giants were 7-1 in both Rowand’s and Rent’s 8 previous starts and they were still bitching. This has happened with Rowand repeatedly. At one point last year he was hitting over .300 for three weeks before the boys noticed it. I think Chuclkefuck once dissed “Row-Row” while his HR WAS STILL IN THE AIR…
Twin, whatever man. Torres has made some poor decisions on the base paths of late. His excellent play has allowed them to not be magnified. That ball was deep enough. Tie score and with his speed Torres should have been at 3rd.
I could be wrong but I don’t think that’s how it works when you break the tie in the bottom of the 9th or an extra inning
You’re the fuck bitching about them paying Andres next year, Jedfuck. As far as “my hero”, I’ve criticized his poor moves but acknowledge the good ones. You’re “One Way Jeddiot”, already kvetching over a contract that hasn’t been consummated. Scumboy.
Douchefan, who have you actually criticized as a truly bad move? Some get lukewarm remarks (we agreed on Garko’s limited impact last sumner), but who have you really knocked? Bengie? No. DeRosa? Eh. Rent? Daily BJ. Richie? See above. All of 2005-2007 is pinned on Magowan. Who? Wellemeyer? Really controversial.
Not a kvetch re Torres. He earned an extension – who the fuck else does SF have as as OF prospect to take that job? No one. Torres may end up like a Benard, which matters if Larry/Brian cry poverty later.
Cool off there, Jed. Take a dip in the cement pond.
Dirt, it’s how it’s played by all runners. Dispute it with someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Jediot is right here, what a coincidence.
“Funny. Was Hrbek a Pole?”
Yup. Prolly still is. 😀
“Torres has made some poor decisions on the base paths of late. ” If you count yesterday, yep. That’s two in the l;ast 2 or 3 months. Fucking epidemic.
Twin, I’m not arguing with you over excerpts from my posts. Chill out man.
Okay, I give up, I’m clueless as to who it is in the POTG photo. Someone enlighten me.
No bitching about Torres is allowed. He’s been a fucking stud and singlehandedly willed the G’s to victory yesterday. If they have to give him a few bucks next year, so be it. He’s earned it.
Ted, not sure what you mean there. It was tied so he advances to 3rd increasing the chaces that he’s driven in.
Buck Showalter now managing the O’s.
Ted: Don’t think Hrbek is Polish, but either Czech or Slovak. Ask Pawlie as to how to differentiate among northern Slavic surnames. Sometimes the borders are not where you think they should be. Southern Slavic surnames generally but not always end in an ovic or ovitch. Same meaning as son, sohn, or sen at the end of many names from the Nordic and Germanic countries. Means son. As in son of ovitch.
That or he drove up the price for the bums….. Another potential catching replacement gone….. Their two best catching prospects in the system now = Blake and Posednik…… Seems odd too because the rotation is what needed the help….
I was really expecting the Dodgers to get Oswalt. Glad he went to the Phillies instead. Not that the bums won’t still go after a pitcher, but it is a little weird that they traded for an OFer.
Son of ovitch, now there’s a band name for ya.
Probably my favorite all time band name was Touched by a Janitor. Back when the TV show Touched by an Angel was something watched by the Hallmark crowd.
What Jediot missed earlier, I was talking about Huff vs. Torres. Interesting he chose Andres on his dig about contract extensions. Typical.
As far as Posednik, I cannot believe some people care that the fucking Dodgers got him. That HAS to be Sabean bashing for the fuck of it. If he’s the best the Bums do, don’t worry for ONE SECOND about the Fodgers…
If a player thinks the ball won’t be caught, he doesn’t tag up. EVER. The argument would be with his eyesight, perhaps. Judgement was impeccable. Next..
They will have to re-sign or let go Torres, Huff, AND Uribe next year. Let’s hear the proposals. None will be free, boys.
So he misjudged the ball being caught and that is impeccable. Okay.
Who cares? SF won.
Since there is more than one culprit, in fact several, no need for names. Many of you argue your POV vs. accepted baseball protocol or practice. Forgetting today’s latest, a good example is the pitch count business. That is not a “Botchy” practice, people. MLB as an organizaton has come to accept that young pitchers can be harmed by too much use too early. Arguing that Bonehead should ignore that is just really really dumb. That’s what gets you in trouble with The Man. That’s me.
No, it was two seperate issues, DR. Eyesight, judgement. BTW, you don’t go by “DT” something on the Splash, do you? If you don’t care, don’t bring it up. Suspicious is what it is.
I ask because there’s a guy there I call DeliriumTremens, he doesn’t like his comments excerpted. Maybe they’re embarassing for him, I dunno.
I’ve never made the BS pitch count argument. The idea that Torres should have advnaced isn’t earth shattering or breaking with conventional wisdom. He’s done it in the past and I thought he should have there. The ball was a misread on his part. Maybe Flannery could have helped him a bit…..moving on.
Didn’t say you did make the pitch count argument. Really, you’ve only made several mistakes lately, that wasn’t one of them. Moving on..
Is that your way of opening the door to start spewing hate my way Twin? If so, whatever. I don’t post under different names. I figure you would have cross checked IPs already.
But stop making shit up. He never tags on balls he thinks won’t be caught. None of the players do because they are not supposed to. Again, the error would have been misjudging the fly, not his judgement in deciding not to tag. Two seperate issues. Surely you understand that. Yes? Yes? OK, not…
This is what I’m talkin’ about, Zeke..
That’s not what I said. Yawn…….
As Twin noted yesterday, the way Ishi tagged it I thought the game was over right then and there. Maybe Torres thought the same.
I’ll go check on my little dunces over at the Splash.. Be back in a bit.
“Is that your way of opening the door to start spewing hate my way Twin?” I only return it. So the answer is: no.
Mac, that’s probably true. What Dirt does not want to accept ( even though K and K have also explained it rather extensively) is that it is the rule of thumb to only tag on a ball the OF can get under. There is a difference between misreading the flight of the ball and making a mental error. It is a mental error to tag on a ball you do not think will be caught. There is nuance here, that’s evidently a problem.
