A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

That Game…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 29, 2010

Wow. There would have been any words other than swear words to describe that game if we had lost. I only caught the tail end of the Kuip Show but he said that had there been 2 outs instead of 1 the winning run would not have counted because of Nate’s bonehead move not to touch 2nd base. Can you imagine that scene playing out?

I’m done with all this *Orange Shoes* talk but I wouldn’t put it past Wilson to keep running them out there. Any sane person would understand this is getting to be a distraction and ditch them. But closers do their own thing, often with the “look at me” mentality.  There’s also a little “I don’t back down to anyone” mentality going on, too. I guess we’ll see how this plays out…..

It is easy for Jed to have 20/20 hindsight regarding Torres/Burrell/bumgarner and Posey and them being better options now than Rowand/DeRosa/Wellemeyer and Molina. In case you have forgotten, Molina and Rowand were on absolute tears to start the season. DeRosa was a much better option than trading for a full priced Burrell. Bumgarner couldn’t get anyone out in Spring Training and was barely touching 90 on the gun.

And then when Sabean and Co. make moves to improve the team, Jed still finds a way to single out Sabean and blame him and only him for ruining what would have been a 70 win team right now. Seriously, this shit gets so fucking old.

Here is my proposal that I made a few weeks ago earlier on Twin’s comments about contracts for Torres, Uribe and Huff.

Torres – 3 years at $4 mill per year
Huff – 2 years at $6 mill per year
Uribe – 2 years at $6 mill per year

The symmetry of Huff and Uribe making the same as the contracts Franchez and DeRosa got I think will make for good team chemistry and acknowledgement that that each outperformed their relatively meager salaries this year and Uribe last year. So these bumps in salaries are a big thank you for this year for what is really below average salaries for how Uribe and Huff have performed.

Torres is north of 30 years old, and even though they have him tied up in potential arbitration, they should recognize the next couple of years will be his maxmimum amount he will earn. He will earn a total of $12 mill, the same Huff/Uribe/DeRosa/Franchez will get in their individual deals.

  15. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 29, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Total cost for those three would obviously be $16 mill, which balances out almost exactly with the contracts that Huff, Uribe and Renteria made this year (which was $16.25 mill). So the proposed contracts are entirely viablle in the current construct of the Giants payroll in 2010.

And then in 2012, the DeRosa and Franchez contracts are done, saving $12 mill, which almost pays the 2012 salaries for Huff, Uribe and Torres.

And in 2013, Huff and Uribe’s contract will be complete, just leaving the $4 mill for Torres. And Torres will turn 35 that year, less likely he will be productive as a starter past that age.

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 29, 2010 at 1:45 pm

He is arb eligible next year right? He may get more than $4 mill in arbitration…is he still tied for the lead league in doubles?

Huff could very well get more and Sabean should tell his agents that they would happy for him to test the free agent market to see if he could get more dollars, but the Giants wont go beyond 2 years and $12 mill…if he got a better deal, than thanks Aubrey for all you done for us in 2010!

Twin, I’m with you on Torres first and foremost. I’d consider re-signing them in this order of importance:

    1. Torres – sign him to a deal only as long as you might expect it takes for Gary Brown to develop. 2-3 years? The guy deserves a huge raise, so give it to him.

    2. Huff – Don’t give this guy more than 2 years and preferably 1 with a team option. It sure is looking like 2009 was his fluke year, not this year.

    3. Uribe – 1 year. And not for much. He’s nice as a utility guy for the dingers but his slumps are killers.

    Go Giants!
It seems I am just as much a fan knowing what is going on in the office, the minors and with the on field manager. Knowing the stats, but missing the thing that I know best: being close to the team – seeing them before, during and after a game. Even telly would have given me a bit of that – but ESPN sucks. Orange shoes count more than Posey’s streak. Although now that it has ended that may change. Before the ASG I was worried about the team sinking to 500; now I worry about the team sinking to 600. Which may be barely enough for the WC. I guess things could be a lot worse. Right BFE?

MadBum gets some rest and 5 or 6 8th inning – 5th starter guys keep us close while it all comes down to offence and September.

TWIN– that’s a total bullshit post to direct at Loo. Andres Torres is doing something that almost no ball player has ever done before. Find me a bunch of guys who started blasting out near .900 OPS’s in their early 30’s having never done ANYTHING before that. Huff has produced in the big leagues, he had 30 HR’s or whatever 2 years ago– not at all impossible to see him bouncing back this year. And Posey is a can’t miss hitting prospect, why would anyone think he might be on steroids in this day and age? I don’t think any of our guys are on steroids. But to jump on someone who is wondering if Torres is on them is out of line–there is NOTHING that explains what this dude is doing this year (or last). And then you have the audacity to make it a racist thing and throw Uribe in their too when Loo never said shit about him (unless I missed a post which I might have)…..
