A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Timmy Needs to STEP UP

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 11, 2010

Losing to the Dempster’s and Jurrjen’s of the league isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Unless you’re the 2 time CY Young Champ. Why would a 2-time defending CY champ need a *new delivery* mid season anyway? I don’t doubt Tim’s effort one bit, but this is not where we want to be in August with our ACE….

Kinda bummed that Renteria is ouchy again–this means we will see a lot more Franchez who will be released this Winter if Burriss proves he’s healthy and productive……

With Willy Aybar DHing for the Rays I can’t help but wonder how Tampa Bay, desperately in need of a *bat*,  feels about sending checks to THE BAT every month…….

We remember when Zito toyed around with a new delivery and see how that worked out. For whatever reason, Panda and Timmy seem to playing without ‘a fire in their belly’ this year.

Not sure Burriss is a short or long term answer, and is tied to the Frandsen/Lewis/Bowker era. Seems there has been a movement away from that whole group of players for good, bad, or indifferent so wouldn’t be surprised if Franchez is here next year and Burris is not on the roster altogether.

Nothing better than playing with the house money, thank you TB.

I’m as irked as anyone about Timmy’s performance of late, but as usual, Gringo, your point is that you have no point at all. Try for 5 minutes not to be a schmuck.

“playing without ‘a fire in their belly’”

What a load of crap. Yeah, they have struggled. But it has nothing to do with their lack of determination and desire. Total bullshit to even bring that up.

Well over on the Gate, Tim says he is fine, but he also says he does not need anyone helping him anymore. He is 26 years old and does not need a babysitter to figure out what is wrong. Sounds like an ego problem there, sometimes asking for help is not a bad thing!!

  4. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on August 11, 2010 at 8:25 am

Pablo and Lincecum have plenty of “fire,” if anything they’re trying too hard. Couple of times Lincecum’s frustration has caused a type of tunnel-vision. He just focuses on trying to get his stuff going, his rhythm set, and he lets base runners run wild. Last night we saw that, although it wasn’t quite as bad as that infamous game a month or so back. But his determination and competitiveness have not dimmed a bit. Same with Pablo. Last night he clearly put some extra effort into his defense; he was not going to make the sort of misplays he’d committed Monday night. He’s not swinging with authority at the plate much these days, but that’s not because he’s giving up. Both guys have hit rough patches at the same time. Each of them has tremendous “fire in the belly,” and that’s exactly why they’ll each figure it out.

    • eddacker's avatar eddacker415 said, on August 11, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Agree! and if tim has changed anything willingly it had to be with advice; he has so many great places to get dat from.
As for fire: all you needed to see was the game (2 before the AS break) when he realised he didn’t have his best stuff (second inning)
He screwed up his face and battled. And that time he won without his best stuff.
That’s our Freak. now and forever.

Yeah, Timmy’s era is something around 5.50 through his last 5 starts. Granted, we expect better of him than 4.2 and 5 runs vs LA, or 4.0 and 6 yesterday, but even the Atl game was not very good. Long balls and walks, and not able to get out of trouble. Yeah, we expect a lot from him, and 11-6 3.41 is nothing to sneeze at, but he’s pretty fricking wobbly these days. He was 10-4 2.94 a month ago . . .

He’ll likely shitcan the new delivery. Time to talk to dad . . .

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 11, 2010 at 9:05 am

Carl Stewart, filling in for Baggs, said the same thing about calling dad in. It’s not like he’s too far away. I think he does a weekly radio show with Patrick Connor on KNBR. I saw him hanging out at Public house during the Mets series and he went on a date with a friend of mine a few days later. If Bonds had his whole entourage on the payroll, why can’t we get Timmy’s dad on it?

  6. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on August 11, 2010 at 8:31 am

    “No fire in their belly?”

There is absolutely no fucking way anyone not on the team knows jack shit about that. Timmy’s never been a very demonstrative guy when things are going well, so judging his ‘fire’ by how he comports himself on the mound is asinine to speculate about. He is his own worst critic, and I’m sure is frustrated over these last few shakey starts.

  7. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 11, 2010 at 8:56 am

BF, not so sure Franchez will be gone next year. Sabean is not one to admit mistakes, and, if history holds true, releasing him after one season of a two year contract is unlikeley. There will be the excuses that he’s a career .300 hitter, a gold glove calliber second baseman, he was coming off an injury, he’s a professional vet, and of course, he’s a gamer. I see him being on the roster. Hopefully though, Brandon Crawford learns a big league stroke and can play short in 2011 and Burris proves this year that he can supplant Franchez as the starting 2nd baseman.

    • JBat's avatar JBat said, on August 11, 2010 at 9:34 am

Being a career .300 hitter is not an excuse, it’s a fact. I’m not saying keep him or not, but a guy like that is going to get the benefit of the doubt.

      • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 11, 2010 at 9:43 am

Personally, I think the guy is hurt again. He was on fire coming off the DL. Then he suddenly dropped way off. But not being around the team, who really knows why Franchez is rewriting the book on sucktitude right now. I really hope he can get his stroke back because I love his defense.

      • TellItGoodbye's avatar TellItGoodbye said, on August 11, 2010 at 1:52 pm

More important, being a .300 hitter is not even the truth.

Continued ambivalence re Burriss highlights why Giants fans STINK. Yes, I said it. Giants fans STINK. He’s “tied to the Frandsen/Lewis/Bowker era”? STINK.

Burriss is 25, selected 33rd overall, as cheap as we have at $400K. Proved in 2008 and 2009 he can field and steal bases, hopefully he can punch-n-judy his way to a decent OBP (like 2008). But no, after injury rehab, he’s at a career crossroads and make-or-break year? So fucking fickle and stupid I don’t know where to start.

Even if Burriss never becomes more than Ramon Martinez, wouldn’t you play out the string and, at worst, pay him $400K and overpay some bopper for the chronic OF weakness on this roster? Wouldn’t you gladly have Burriss do what Freddy or Rent have done … for $MM less? Giants’ farm system is totally bankrupt of OFs, despite the propaganda about Sabean and empty suit Bobby Evans really dedicating a whole new focus there. Who are OFs of tomorrow? Darren Ford? Good luck. The fact that Torres was kept around long enough to surprise all when Rowand went down – playing behind Fred, Nate, Velez, and Bowker – screams how horrible things are on the farm.

But, no, Giants fans quickly lump Burriss into the lazy bucket of Frandsen, et al. Those guys did nothing well. Lewis, Bowker, Velez, and Frandsen can’t even catch the fucking ball. But it’s much less work to just say “ah, fuck him,” and rationalize defenses for Sabean’s annual slew of plugs and retirement contracts. Burriss sucks, so let’s re-sign Richie and Omar. “Look, it’s Richie bobblehead day.” Giants’ fans are so happy to see a familiar “name” in the program on April 1 that they have no fucking concern about breaking this 50+ year curse.

Get off Burriss. He’s not our problem, he can’t possibly be a problem. We have no OFs here or in the pipeline. Figure how to get a good OF for more than a one year rental, then worry about Burriss.

I can still remember where I was, listening to the first ST game on the radio, when Burriss re-injured his foot. Big disappointment. I love to watch that guy play and hoped he would be more than a sub this year. Of course, I realize he may not learn to hit well at the mlb level. But he may. No downside at all giving him a shot.

I’ve already outlined why Fruckie Sanchez is gone after this year. Hell, Burriss had more good swings last night than Fruck has had in two weeks. Anyway, it’s not just BA with Sanchez, as I said, he now has zero pop, zero. Nada. Even that is tolerable but he cannot run, either. So unless this is injury related and can be “cured” or he makes a total turn around, he’s gone. And don’t tell me about past history, they don’t HAVE recent past history of being a playoff contender before last year. If he can’t perform, he’s outta here…
Kat: an MRI is a *TEST*, he will not be out for a month or two due to a test.

Just getting a SS was never going to address the problem anyway. Here’s the scoop, poops: Panda is the 3red baseman. Uribe will play short or second regardless. So unless they got a SS and canned Fruckie’s ass, they were not improving themselves. Just leave the thinking to me and my boys from now on. None of this is apologia for Renteria, the deal didn’t work out. What needs to be done now is REALISTICALLY look at what’s best for the team. If he has to be DLed, what is best is Uribe/Burriss at SS and second, and Velez activated if he’s ready.

Renteria on DL for third time this year. MRI shows biceps strain, he said.

    We’re still short.

  50. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on August 11, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Giants about to announce trade, dealing minor-leaguer for big-leaguer.

You guys might get your wish for that SS you’ve been bitchin’ and moanin’ ’bout. Keppinger for Loo, perhaps?

Fontenot acquired for Low-A infielder Evan Crawford.

      Fontenot’s a lot like Kippinger.

  56. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on August 11, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Addition by subtraction if nothing else. His playing time has significantly decreased month by month. Only 6 ABs thus far in August. He should be fresh at least.

How do you trade for someone on a team you’re in the middle of a series with?

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on August 11, 2010 at 6:01 pm

No problem trading across the field during a series. I think Billy Beane has done that more than once (the A’s probably like saving the transportation costs). Ballplayers have no ethical rules that create conflicts of interest. Unless you’re StL and Cinn, right now.

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on August 11, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Just seems weird, that’s all. But yeah Molina for Phillips would be an ill thought out move right now

  58. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 11, 2010 at 6:11 pm

Like the trade. Don’t know what Sabes had on the Cubs but an A-ball speedster with modest hitting stats for a ready to go MLB infielder who plays both second and third is ok by me. His stats indicate a decent BA, .280 range if recall is correct, an OBP just a titch over .333 and an SP in the low .400s. No speed. No big pop. Contact hitter evidently. He can bat 2nd, 7th or 8th. Looks like an adequate defender. Orioles actually made him a first round pick just after the turn of the century. Went to the Cubbies in the Sosa deal.

Good backup at the least. Will get some playing time. Looks like the RentMan era has just about run its course. This is not the big move for another outfielder some had been hoping for, but props to Sabean for the quick move when backed up to the wall. Maybe he can snangle a better backup catcher next.

BTW: Things like this do not get noticed much in a loss, but Santiago Casilla turned in a very keen three innings of relief work last night. He kept the Giants in the game. More and more its looking like this guy’s a keeper and may not be the one to go down on Affeldt’s return. Who that may be is a whole nother question. Runzler probably has options left, so if he is activated before the end of the month, he’ll go to Fresno. But recent sterling work by most of the BP confuses matters considerably. Romo appears to be the only one there with remaining options. If he goes down, he might not be available for the PS.

    Fontenot has impressive numbers this yr. w/RISP (38 ABs): .368 .422 .605 1.027

Comes in handy for PHing late with some ducks already on the pond. Not a sexy move, but solid all-around. No complaints here.

He’s mostly played second base, so that’s good. Cost a guy who has not been projected as a MLB player. The biggest plus: he is BETTER than Fruckie Sanchez offensively and a plus defender at 2B. Unless you had unrealistic Room B expectations for Hanley R, this is a great deal.

Play the little runt vs lefties and Font against the right-handers. The little shit actually IS hitting lefties this yr. And Font is strictly vs RP. Only 7 ABs this yr. vs lefties. Looks like a good platoon.
