A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Crowded Outfield

So Cody Ross, come on down. Sorry, no explanation points.
After looking at this a little more carefully, I’m much less enthused. Baggs thinks he subs for Torres against lefties and maybe that’s true. But we simply have nobody to leadoff (al our high OBP guys are toads–Huff, Posey, Burrell) if it goes down like that. And let’s forget Rowand already. He of the .291 OBP shouldn’t be leading off for a little league team. I guess Ross subs for Guillen if his re-injured quad won’t let him go. But otherwise, Guillen is playing is playing everyday. You never know though, Guillen could be the guy to hit the DL to make room for Ross. He’d probably handle that very well, dotcha think?

Plus Ross will be 30 this year, I thought he was younger when I first head of the pick up……..

I dunno, 4th OF, whatever, come on board…….

Smart baseball move. May not have been thinking of next year, but Ross will likely be one of our starting outfielders next year.

40-man? Rowand should be the one with the mystery illness on the DL. Or do they waive Nate?

The Cody Ross deal really is a fitting thud to the recent road trip. Not enough to make a difference, but good enough perhaps to banish Schierholz. Overall, the mediocrity of such an offensive move merely underscores the obvious: Pitching is what will win it for this team. And pitching better git with the program real soon.

In 2003, Ross was named the Detroit Tigers Minor League Player of the Year. As a member of the Marlins on September 11, 2006, he hit a three-run home run and a pair of two-run home runs. The five home runs and 14 RBI for the two games were more than any other month for Ross that season.

I also got this information off of his Cody Ross Fan Web Site (e.g., mom, dad, neighbors, etc.) . . .

“Cody Ross is from a small town in southeast New Mexico called “Carlsbad”. There isn’t much there except desert and a cave, but one thing is for sure, the town loves its baseball.

Cody J. Ross…wife’s name is Summer…graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1999, earning Baseball America’s Second-Team High School All-American honors during his senior season…batted .525 (34-for-60) with 12 home runs, 45 RBI and 15 stolen bases…also threw a perfect game during his high school career…batted against Phil Mickelson in the golfer’s tryout with the Toledo Mud Hens in 2003…originally signed by Tigers’ scout Jim Olander.

Assistant Varsity coach Bobby Click had this to say about Cody:

“…a great athlete. Extremely strong, quick and has a tremendous arm. He is a bulldog between the white lines. He is a great team leader and a money player.”

Cody’s favorite player is Ken Griffey Jr., who he named his dog after. Cody had the unlucky luck to go on the DL just after getting traded from L.A. to the Reds. While on the DL, guess who else was on DL? Yep, Cody got to work out with Griffey Jr. while they were “healing”. Now there’s a dream come true.”

Welcome to the SF Bay Area Cody! Now, go out there and make us proud 🙂

Downs went down. I didn’t even know he was on the team, thought he was in frez-ho.
Listening to idiot and mac on knbr this am, they said sabean picked him up to block him from going to San Diego. If that’s true we probably won’t see much of him unless guillen can’t play. Looks like he’s a free agent next year, at least according to cotts baseball contract website…

Flav, he was “Frez-ho,” they waived him to make room on the 40-man. Now they gotta move one to make room for Cody. Shitholtz seems the most likely candidate, but something tells me Ishi should have his bags packed. Nobody tell TF.

Like I said yesterday, unless Cody Ross can come in and fill a spot in the rotation, he’s useless. And fuck him anyway. We still owe him a plunking for that bat flip job he pulled on Cain the last time the Fish were in town. If we plunk him in BP, I might consider it even.

We now find ourselves 6GB of the goddamn San Diego Padres just as I said we would be prior to our roadie. That 3 1/2 engorged itself to a full 6 just as I predicted it would like your weekly erection. Unfortunately that 6 may grow even larger, but no need to worry about any more extended erections. I know none of you guys have any more than 6. Better give Jimmy Johnson a call. 🙂

Who knows if the G’s even wanted him. They were just blocking the Padres. Should be a short stay as I think he’s arb eligible. I would be surprised if they offered it to him.

All these fucking roster moves, trades, pick ups whatever. Lets talk about the Giants aneimic hitting, 1 run in 18 innings. Terrible!! We have to stop looking at what the pitchers are giving up and asking why the Giants can’t score runs?? especially on the road. if the Giants are the wild card they are going to have to win on the road!! So they should start showing they can do that. Otherwise no team is going to be afraid of the Giants in the playoffs. Other teams will know they just have to win their home games.

  8. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 23, 2010 at 8:24 am

If there’s any gas left in the tank then it will have to show up in this nine game home set, starting with the Reds. This series is probably the final test as to whether or not the team is an actual contender. Giants can’t win two of three from Cincy, then that’s about it. The team appears to be demoralized, so the only possible solution is home cooking. If they can win 6 or the 9 they stand a decent chance at the offseason. If not, start thinking 2011.

Ross may be pretty much of an accidental Giant, but he is a better option for next season than Rowand, Schierholtz, or Guillen. An outfield of Torres, Ross and Huff would be close to ML average. If my memory glands are operative, Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford may be out there among the free agents, but i doubt whether Neukom & Co. would be willing to match the $ teams like the Yankees would offer for them. As the fifth largest market in the country it would be nice to see SF act that way, but i’m not betting on it.

  9. willied's avatar willied said, on August 23, 2010 at 8:48 am

Explain to me the point about blocking the Padres from acquiring Ross again…I don’t see this guy being a better player than Burrell or Ishi. Seems like the last thing we need on this team is another low OBP guy who strikes out a lot. After picking up Guillen and moving Ishi to the far end of the bench and sticking Huff or Posey at 1B, I don’t see much improvement.

And who wants to be “close to mlb avg?” Imo, both Ross and Guillen need to be Garkoed.

This next year is supposed to be a hot mkt for FAs, but just look at what happened this year: Granderson trade, Bay, Matsui, Figgins, Abreu re-signing, Javier Vasquez to the Yankees, all under performing and making big bucks. A lot of people here were high on Mike Cameron (injured and mostly useless all year) at $8 mil too, and LA is paying Manny another $20 mil this year. Just aren’t that many big bucks guys, and I would certainly include ARod at the top of the list, who have worked out. And last two recipients of long term deals here in SF among your favs?

Does anyone know what the projected win total will be for this year. If they aren’t any better than last year, I think the Giants need to go the way of the A’s start bringing up the young bucks. Play them till they prove they are Pro players. It will be painful but I for one am tired of the revolving pick ups the Giants bring in!!

Glad I didn’t witness these last 2 games. 1 run 18 innings. LaRussa whines to the umps, and what? That kills the Giants bats? Fuck that. They ARE whiny bitches. The Giants HAVE to catch them. Fucking Philly and StL get the Rasros and the Fucs. No hope there. The Giants have the red-hot Reds.

They CAN’T fall too far behind. Cain NEEDS to being his A game, and the fucking bats need to wake up and get Matt some early run support.

The west looks nearly unattainable, given that SD just doesn’t lose that many games in a row. Their 2 game skid vs Milwaukee did them no harm . . . Besides, they have AZ at home. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………….

The OFer folderol here is adds more spotlight on the lack of player development in the Giants system over the Sabean regime, and Sabes’ seat of the pants personnel moves. The Giants organization, even when it was bad under Stoneham and Lurie, used to crap better young OFers than Sabean has developed. And I don’t see any standout OFers in the minors still right now. Result: a constant procession of older players from season to season that leaves no continuity in who’s playing where, what type of hitters the team has to build other positions around, and overall lack of OF power and speed. Welcome to Ross, I suppose, looks like he has some pop and could be an improvement at a relatively young (for the Gmen) 30, but he seems to add to the endless string of flawed OFers in/out of here with low plate discipline…

And was anybody predicting that Downs gets the DFA ax for Ross? I’d actually take Downs over Fontenot, from what I’ve seen so far. I am almost near shocked that a DL move wasn’t made to accommodate Ross, especially since I think this Ross thing was not supposed to happen, and has flummoxed management. You DFA a decent minor league utility guy 8 days before the roster expands? I guess Downs could come back to the organization after the 10 days, but I don’t get it…

  19. max808's avatar max808 said, on August 23, 2010 at 11:09 am

Like Dennis says, this is the first of 2 moves. One to clear space on the 40, then Dl Nate or Aaron to create room on the 25 man.
I won’t weep if Downs gets claimed but it’s likely he won’t and he’ll return to Fresneck.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2010 at 11:15 am

Well, OK, we shall see what maneuvers develop. I, too, won’t cry a river if he get claimed. Yet, a guy who has actually played up with the big club this year and didn’t embarrass himself, is essentially the 40th guy on the 40 man?…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2010 at 11:30 am

I looked at the 40 man. I’d toss Mota before Downs, he’s been hammered the last half dozen appearances, then bring up Hinshaw or Joaquin before the roster expansion. I doubt either would do any worse than Mota, he’s been terrible. Mota’s gone next year anyway, and I’d say Downs has more usefullness that Mota…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2010 at 11:50 am

I say Mota’s suckage means he’s expendable. Right now the middle infield spots are in shambles. The more flexibility there after the roster expands, the better, in case any more of those guys get hurt, or turn into walking DLs…

For years I have denied myself newspapers, scores, Internet, “civilization” while at camp as we call it in these parts. So, a few moments ago I cheated, in a backdoor sort of way, with my laptop hooked up to the camp’s modem, as I sit looking at pines and lake after a day and a half of deluge and after a pleasant and quiet ride in a canoe. I typed in “Jose Guillen” on Google, figuring it’d give me a clue to Saturday’s and Sunday’s games. Then a story on Cody Ross pops up. I drill deeper, can’t help myself. And now here I am, breaking camp rules, by the front door, not the back.

The biggest culprits in all of this are Tammy and Gutman. They were supposed to be the KEYS to this team and have regressed horribly.

At least the schedule turns markedly easier after Cincy. The .490 winning percentage for the remaining teams they play drops even further after the 3 game set with the Reds. Philly’s looking at .506 but STL might be the front runner for the WC with a remaining schedule of teams with only a .453 winning pct.

The Giants only have 10 games remaining against playoff caliber teams, with 7 of those being SD. I can’t believe it but they still have a legitimate chance to take the division if they could just figure out how to dominate SD in their two remaining series. Will they? Fuck if I know, but I would bet they don’t. It would be a real shit sandwich to end the season a couple of games out of the playoffs, wouldn’t it?

Repeats from last year by Lincecum and Sandoval, and the Giants are in first with SD. Minor performance dropoffs would have been no big deal, but we’re seeing more of a decline than anyone expected. That said, using the you don’t throw out April principle, Lincecum is still having a good year at this stage. The same can’t be said for Pablo, although he could make up for a lot with a great September. I think Lincecum, despite a clear decline in his stuff, has more than enough residual talent to reel off a few good games in a row. There will just be more bad patches from here on out, unless “mechanical problems” really isn’t a euphemism. Surprisingly, it wasn’t in the case of Madbum.

I think Timmy’s just thrown too many pitches over the last 2+ seasons. He looks like a stick out there, and like he needs a couple shots of Geritol and Red Bull after about the 4th inning. Oswalt made some good points about conditioning for small guys. And Urban on KNBR has let go some alleged insider skerfuffle from the medic staff that maybe Timmy isn’t so great with the workout regimen. Then the other day he also had on a supposed pitching arm specialist that says all Timmy needs is to get back to a long toss regimen, which he used to do in college, but not anymore — supposedly. All Pablo needs is an offseason supply of SlimFast, get out of his sophomore year, and stop swingin at shoetop sliders and curves, and eye-high heaters…

You’re not paying attention. Rockies (9-10_ are just as bad as SF this month (9-11); Dodgers are a bit worse (9-12). Reds, Phils, Pads have basically wiped out what SF did in July.

And you’re just parroting Larry’s BS re Ross. Pads scored 103 runs in Aug.; SF scored 68. Blocking Pads should be irrelevant to the conversation or the thinking. Ross either spells your guy Torres and helps on his own merit or he’s a churns the roster for churning’s sake.

I don’t disagree the playoffs are alive. Rockies closed out 2007 winning 14 of 15. It’s baseball. I question the absence of reason and daily combo of flag-waving, goose-stepping, and name-calling as a basis for having an opinion about anything, including who’s “outta here.”

Well, at least you’re dealing with some facts, so that’s a start. But Venable as a backup for SD: 10 HR, 43 rbi, .328 obp … those are everyday Pablo’s numbers! Except he has 24 SBs and 200 fewer PAs. Only an ignorant homer would still cling to Pablo here and end Venable’s platoon for Ross there.

Fine, he’s replacing Rowand’s starts. The difference between WC and staying home isn’t Rowand’s one or two starts per week. Rowand didn’t cause the Giants to score in losses this month: 2, 1, 0, 3, 6, 2, 2, 3, 2, 1, 0. Yeah, those damn pitchers . . .

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 23, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Ross/Venable have as much to do with Sandoval as they do to global warming. But if you’re going to selectively choose recent stats as you did in your Sanchez/ Renteria nonsense, Sandoval is .300-.500-.800 in August. Since you misunderstood those numbers last year, that’s BA/Slugging/OPS.
As to what the difference bewtween WC and staying home, it can be one PITCH, shitwad, let alone a couple starts a week. God help you, really.

Jediot has been called on his cherry picking and distorting stats dozens of times, he simply changes the subject. In the above mentioned Renteria/Sanchez “discussion” he used Rent’s second half against Sanchezes first half, ignoring Fruckles’ (now IMPROVED from then) .223 .275 .539( BA, OBP, OPS) second half, only citing Edgar’s .226 .324 .695, not good but substantially better than Fruckie’s. Again, this is easy: he’s a lying cur.

“when are the Pads going to have a melt down? At this point it does not seem likely.”

Yeah, I guess Tejada’s doing better now than those first few games with the Padres. Those first few games it looked like he was sucking air, but he seems to have found his second wind.

  53. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on August 23, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Baggs makes the point that, at some time, Rowand’s going to have to be able to play all three outfield spots. He’s going to be a back-up outfielder for the rest of his time with the Giants.

  54. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 23, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Kev, in regard to your 2:14 post, obviously, I don’t have a crystal ball to let me know when the Padres will have a sustained losing streak, but most teams do have them. Who knows? They may be the exception. Regardless, we’re still in the Wild Card mix and we can get in the playoffs that way.

By the by, I was probably one of the biggest “doomers” here in Spring Training, i.e., I predicted that they would go 83-79 . . . They are outperforming that prediction easily thus far and I’m very happy about that. That’s why they call people like me a “fan.” In short, when I worked (I retired early), I got paid for being an occupational safety and health director, not an ESPN Baseball Analyst. 🙂

July 14: “white boy fever” at Snarkk re Posey

July 29: First directed at Loo (“Eat it, Zipperhead … You still bind your women’s feet?”). Called out by Flavor. Then back at Flavor (“Nice pic of Andres, too. You couldn’t find a junkie?”). Blow up ensued.

Ironically, on July 29 you were most agitated and vocal about being allowed to challenge those who questioned convention (big # spike = juice) and how they needed to back it up with reaons and were engaged in name-calling. And, of course you should be allowed to call them racists . . . while offering your own slurs. Many layers here.

Just shut the fuck up while you’re behind yet visible. Better yet – here’s another shovel. Keep digging. Cements a distorted view of the entire world, especially what happens on the diamond.

I’m not gonna bother to look it up, but I’d bet dollars to donuts that we were scoring more runs when Buster was hitting clean up. Could be totally coincidental, but 3.6 runs/gm for August ain’t gonna cut it. Shit, Alex Smith produced more than that last night.

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 23, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Problem with that shit is that it doesn’t prove anything unless his batting order position is the only variable. It’s the kind of claim that bloggers make all the time for that very reason: you’re totally safe because it can’t be proven or disproven.

A little brutal to put that in Omar, he’s playing pretty well. Jed would be delighted to point out that his OPS is better than Rent’s, Freddy’s, and just a whisker below Pablo… his OBP is sedcond only to Konerko on that team. I’d put that on a lot of guys before Omar.

Still have to make a corresponding move for Ross. Schulman said the other week that MLB has really cracked down on teams making a phantom move of saying so-and-so pulled something. Trying to make it more legit I guess. Personally, I’d throw Rowand off a two story building. That should suffice their criteria.

  62. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 23, 2010 at 4:27 pm

The “racist” topic has been coverd previously. If it fits, wear it. I have never called Flavor a racist. I HAVE discussed the empathy some have for Krueger and his comments, the calling of Renteria “boy”, the “lazy” stereotype with many Latinos, the treatment of Fred Lewis, ignoring Worrell and Nen blowing game 6 and putting it all on Felix, the epithets for Sandoval replete with burrito jokes, MANY other examples. Those who get defensive need to examine their own ideas, not mine.

  67. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on August 23, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Giants placed Mota on the DL with Iliotibial Band Syndrome to clear a spot for Ross. Don’t worry, Del has it covered.:

Iliotibial band syndrome is due to inflammation of the iliotibial band, a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs down the outside of the leg. The iliotibial band begins at the hip and extends to the outer side of the shin bone (tibia) just below the knee joint. The band functions in coordination with several of the thigh muscles to provide stability to the outside of the knee joint.

    The Password is “Make-Believe”

Ya know what this means? We’re only carrying 11 pitchers! As soon as I find what’s wrong with that, I’ll start to whine about it.

On the other hand, Rowand is a good centerfielder. They now have Torres, Ross, Rowand, and Nate so they can certainly replace Burrell and Huff late with a lead. This is pooh-poohed by many but can be huge in a race that could go down to the final weekend.
