Twin’s New Contest and something from “Ted Sillanpaa”….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 24, 2010

For whatever reason, I am not able to cut and paste this into today’s thread. But Twin has set up another contest: Pick the total number of wins for the season. Tie breaker is total runs scored for the year. Email your picks to twinfan1@hotmail.com. He’s giving away another custom built computer, everyone is eligible. He can post the specs later today…..

I shut down the old blog and have any comments that get posted there now coming to me first for moderation. Amazingly, people still try to post there almost every single day though I haven’t approved even one comment there in months. Anyway, this was an interesting comment I got last night. Anybody read this guy? He gets bent pretty easily, doesn’t he…..

this is what he was responding to that I wrote last March 23rd….

“Tuesday, March 23, 2010
The Final Roster Spots…..
Some guy named Ted Sillanpaa wrote an article in The Bleacher Report that suggests the last roster spot is going to shake out of this group: Bowker, Ishikawa, Velez, Torres, Posey, Frandsen and Lewis. I dunno, how can you trust an opinion from a guy named “Sillanpaa”? That name sounds made up. I haven’t played out a “fantasy roster” ..”

Then this was the post he tried to make last night:

“Gee. Can’t imagine how your blog died.
The last name came with my family from Finland. And, the Giants final decisions did involve those guys. Thanks for giving me and the friend who somehow found this a laugh.
Ted Sillanpaa”

My question:  his *friend* found this? Right. $10 says this dude sits around all day doing google searches of his made-up name  and then desperately reads anything that anyone has written about this chump. I still don’t know who this guy is or if he’s a real person. He’s probably a bot. Two flaps down to this Sillanpaa character……

I put my mind to some good use for a change, and examined the name “Sillanpaa” a little closer and found the word “aplasia” hidden within:

    Aplasia \A*pla”si*a\, n. [NL.; Gr. ? priv. + ? a molding.]
    (Med.)
    1. Incomplete or faulty development.
    [Webster 1913 Suppl.]

    2. (Med.) a defect, retardation.

    Problem solved.

OK, Batflip boy is an uprgrade over Nate, Rowand, and probably Guillen too, but if those are the minimum requirements for employment in SF OF, then obviously the bar ain’t real high. I guess you invite the guy next year to ST at $6mil and make someone (hopefully younger) beat him out of a spot. I just think the odds he turns into Andres Torres are slim and none, and low OBP guys who K a lot describes too much of what we already have.

Whomever was going last night (Mac or Max?) must have had a great fucking time. Updates? Or is it a little early yet?

It was nice to actually be able to watch a Giants game last night, and even better that it was a win. Pretty much top-notch all around. Cain looked about as good as he can look, which is pretty damn good.

Torres smoked a big homer to get back the two runs Cain had just given up. That guy can cover the shit out of fastballs up and away. It seems like a lot of his homers recently have been on similar pitches. He has a decent shot at 20 dingers and 30 steals this year. Who would’ve guessed that before the season started? He’s one of the best stories in baseball and you never hear about it in the national media. What a shocker.

Aubrey has another huge game, including a big double in the first and a bomb of a homer in the eighth, and it looks like he’s over his slump. Say what you want about Sabean, but remember this signing the next time you feel the urge rip him. Huff may end up with 30 homers and 100 ribbies, and no one wanted him before the G’s picked him up.

Panda looks like he’s back! He hit the ball hard all night and just missed another home run. Sweet. Getting him going would mean a ton down the stretch.

I can barely watch a game and listen to the ESPN drones regurgitate the same bullshit about the Giants they always do (Cain, no run support, crappy offense, etc.). I wonder if they ever actually watch the team when they’re not forced to.

Great win last night. I’d like to see Sanchez prove he can win two starts in a row tonight.

What a yo-yo team. Home cookin helps. Just cooler enough than St. Louis (where isn’t?) for the team to get on its hind legs and let out a holler. Maybe this was the game that reenergizes the team. If Drrrty brings the kinda stuff we saw in that first game against the Cards, SF could be on the way to building up some decent momentum in this 9 game home series. Timing is right.

Not to worry about the name Sillanpaa, Flav. He’s a fixture on the Bleacher Report. He had me fooled. though. Thought the name was Estonian. Met this woman in Fargo, ND name of Nancy Soonpaa who was of that extraction, so i thought it would have carried over. Maybe 15 centuries ago it did. That was about the time when the Finns and Estonians took over opposite corners at the east end of the Baltic and gradually became separate peoples. Their languages are still mutually understandable, though Finnish has developed some Swedish influences, while Estonia sits right next to the Russians.

Now i understand why the Coen brothers picked on Fargo for the name of their movie. Not only is it a far go for Moorhead, their Minnesota neighbor across the Red River; but i also met someone there with the last name of Fleischfresser, which, if you are conversant with the German language is a total hoot for a backname. The meaning of that monicker leaves Sillanpaa rolling in the dust.

What a game to attend last night. Good pitching, good defense and great hitting. Not to mention, it was 75 degrees. Summer finally arrived and the Giants bats came with it. It was so warm, that there were swarming crickets in the view level. Reminded me a little bit of the locust game in St. Louis a couple years ago, but it was only noticeable in the upper deck, nothing at field level.

All I did was call out the organization excessively because they refused change it. Carrying 13 pitchers is, was and will continue to be totally asinine. Not sure why RHP keep throwing that two-seam to Torres on the outer half of the plate. He’s taking balanced cuts aned going right back up the middle with those. His dinger was the true deathblow to Cincy.

What d’yall think of simply having Timmy skip a start? Seriously. Strasburg him, so to speak, without DLing him. Think about it: Last year, when he allegedly had that back problem, that may be exactly what they were doing: skipping a turn to let him rest his arm and get his Seattle-addled head straight.

    Eh?

I was all for that a couple weeks ago, but he looked so good the fisrt 4 innings in St. Louis. If he’s on the road to recovering his form, I don’t want to see that momentum stopped. He’ll get an extra day of rest with no game Thursday and then he gets to face the K-happy D-backs. If he fails Friday, it might be worth skipping his next turn.

I’d do it, but that’d bring down the effective staff to 10 for a few games. Bonehead wouldn’t like that. I think you could retroactively DL him to his last start, that would allow for a pitcher callup for a spot start and shorten the time he actually was out. But, the better way would be to wait till the roster expands, just have him skip a start. Blame “tekion capsule syndrome”. Chance of it happening: near zero….

Brandon Belt now at combined 100 RBIs for the season in A and AA. OPS at Richmond is a big 1.017 at 169 ABs over 44 AA games. 19 HRs in 438 ABs = 1 every 23, and the kid can take a walk, has 23. Ks are high at 34, sounds like a typical power 1b guy. If he makes it, chances are his HR rate improves. Dunno if this guy is the real deal given the usual Giants minor league failures when they get up to the bigs, but who knows? He’s got to be a consideration at 1B going into ST next year. IF he could be even a 15-18 HR, .280 BA guy with say around 75-80 RBIs in his first year, with good D, that would be a huge addition to the squad — and open up lots of possibilities for the lineup. Maybe you don’t re-sign Huff, use his salary to get another FA OFer. Or sign Huff, use him mostly in the OF. I’d go with the latter, is a safer alternative, Huff seems like he’s got at least a good year left. SF has not had a solid, YOUNG, 1B with good pop and high RBI production in a long while (no, not Ishi) …

Snarkk: Been following Belt since early in the season when he started making some noise in SJ. After his promotion to Richmond his OBP and his SBs dipped slightly but his HRs, triples and SP have increased. This is his first year in organized ball, believe it or not. Medium range draft pick. Tall, rangy kid. He has slash power, clout power, appears to be an OK fielder, has an excellent batting eye judging by the closeness of his S.O.s and BBs and has a fine turn of speed ~ a bit unusual for a power-hitting first baseman. This guy is at least a four-tooler and from every indication appears to be the real deal.

Belt is currently the Giants best prospect in the Minors and is almost certain to get a September callup. That, and ST will determine whether the kid is ready to start the season as the regular first baseman for SF, or whether he could use a bit of AAA seasoning. His set of tools remind me of the Big Cat, Andres Gallaraga, more the long line drive dinger driver than the deep, high fly type like Mark McGwire.

By some point next season, the Giants power train will be fueled primarily by three home-grown products: Sandoval, Posey and Belt. All three of them could be All-Star candidates next season. Belt is as close to a no-doubter as you can get.

WSW, that quote was in the Schulman story after Sanchez’s last game, and I almost posted it as part of one of the threads on the starting pitching “crisis.” The factors of luck, the skill of the opposing hitters, and sheer physical ability are collectively just as important to success as “not making mistakes in the zone.”

    ie; Home 3.52

    2nd half 3.46

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2010 at 1:58 pm

The core of Dirrty’s maddening inconsistency is his BBs given up. He’s at 72 for the year, the highest in MLB, giving him about a 4.5 BBs/game average. Way too high. So, his WHIP of 1.27 is a little better than average, but not great. If he walks 2 or less tonite, and he goes 6 frames or better, SF should win…

Some of you don’t like to talk about the future, doomers like talking about 2004, the Nathan trade, that shit. I prefer now and the future. Anyway, here’s my early line on the 2011 LU:
    C Posey
    1B Sandoval
    2B Fruckie
    SS Uribe
    3B DeRosa
    LF Huff
    CF Torres
    RF Ross
They will try to move Fruckie, though. Snarkkles has been right about one thing: Rowand is history whether he can be traded or not. Burrell and Guillen are as good as gone. Uribe will be back if they can work out another 1 year, as SS alternatives in the system are not good. This is all barring a major trade and/or FA sining. Lincecum’s finish will determine a lot of that. Forget trading any starter if he doesn’t finish well.
Belt could push for an OF spot or first base if Sandoval isn’t moved there. I’m suggesting he’ll be moved to 1B unless he comes to camp slimmer. Neal could also challenge. Burris has a shot at one of the middle infield spots depending on Fruckie and Uribe.

“I’m not here to talk about the past. I’m here to be positive about this subject.” Mark McGwire.

No need to bicker about projections (e.g., does Uribe’s .240 ave. to end 2010 merit starting in 2011). SF’s pitching window has limits. Hall of fame rotations have had 3 or 4 yrs., esp. in steriod and free agency eras. You may be spot on about all of these starters. Just would seem like total resignation from the front office that they refuse to push more chips in the pot for the chance of winning while they have the arms. Sad.

The best money SF can spend this offseason is a cook, a trainer, and a new honey for Pablo. Certainly would have been worth the $34M handed to DeRosa, Freddy, Rent, and Rowand.

Your track record the last couple years is pretty poor, Jediot. Which is why you ignore it and talk about Velez.

    • Jed's avatar Jed said, on August 24, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I mentioned Velez once or twice. Scab? Actually, the numbers on most players have been pretty easy to hit:

Renteria – wake up, accept defeat
Uribe – I called Sabean many bad names for giving Omar $5M instead of Juan
Bengie – I was wrong in 2008-09, right in 2010
      Rowand – c’mon
Affeldt – I liked this one last year, hoped for more this year
Torres – never saw it coming, you earned backslaps for standing by him
Howry – mixed bag, felt the farm guys made him unnecessary
Huff – half wrong, good value yet never thought he was a cleanup hitter – career year in AT&T, go figure
DeRosa – right so far, homers very quiet on this one
Burrell – this was a classic no-brainer, who complained?
Guillen – still a no-brainer, even if Ross or Torres takes his job
Ishi – I was right, you turned on him quickly after March 2009
Pablo – you were so right in 2009, so wrong this year
Nate – I was largely wrong, liked him more than he’s shown
Winn – Worse than Nate, not a starter “on most teams” as you spewed
Romo – We’ve both liked him, even in his shitty spells
Guzman – you read way too many beat mags on him
Jon Sanchez trades – he’s 14-12 since no-no, who are we holding out for?
Garko – we agreed his import was overdone, the fall was dramatic
Freddy trade & resign – my recollection is that we agreed an overpayment that was rationalized at resign time, though I was really surprised how fast you turned on Alderson (he’s been another Vogelsong for Pitt.)

You can point to W-L and say “gotcha,” yet your “whys” are no better than anyone else’s. Some mid-year LU changes in 2010 have been meaningful. But when we simply compare the 2008 LU vs. 2009 LU and think about 72 vs. 88 wins, we’ll all be asking the same question: how in the fuck do the Padres have the best record?

As of now, Uribe is seen as the starting SS in 2011. How he finishes could certainly change that but JedFuck is apparently suffering from the delusion that the season ends August 23. They do not have a minor league SS who is ready. I’m sure they’ll look to that position this winter but my post addressed what it will be barring acquisitions.

Most posters don’t wet their pants like a toddler upon hearing, for instance, the “vitriol” that scoring runs still matters. You can pretend it doesn’t. And you’re mistaken re Bochy: I’ve defended Bochy here many times. He’s overachieved, won an incredible number of close games with garbage in 2008, gets a bad rap partly because he’s a bad interview.

You’re like every corporate or party stooge who can only chant slogans and feels threatened by questions. “Negativity” is code for people who can’t exchange thoughts and watch Fox News to hear someone on TV parrot their thoughts. “I must be smart too. Maybe I can be on TV.”

I enjoyed going to games at Candlestick, even when the Giants sucked. To pay for the ballpark, and a tradeoff for all the great things it’s brought, I accept that “fans” like you must be tolerated. You don’t actually watch: you just want to post a pic with Lou Seal on Facebook and show your buddies the foam no. 1 hand. Tolerance of your continued payments is the price to pay for that ballpark. Fine. But don’t “shhh” people who boo once in awhile at a game. Don’t try to lecture anyone on how to be a fan. Sing your song, don’t demand that all others join your chorus.

And other than reciting your version of the little league pledge after a win, WTF do you have to say anyway? Nothing.

Go ahead and ask me a legitmate question that is relevant to this team right now and I would have no problem answering… your problem is that you want to bitch and moan right now about the wasted rowand renteria derosa money instead of focusing on the team in the middle of WC chase with still a possibility for the divsion…. Most people are sick of listening to that same old tired chorus… over and over again… That crap for the BarryFs and the Hangers of the world, and the reason I don’t read the splash anymore….
And fuck you for calling me a bandwagon quasi fan that is incapable of thinking on my own….
I enjoy the Giants because I love baseball… I love the game… I love the matchups and the game inside of the game… not just the highlights and sportscenter top tens…. This is too long already…. and I am done talking to you unless you have something new to add…

The only problem I have with the Jeds, Kidds, OSFs, LiveFrees of the world is that they seem to get more energized with the losses than the wins. Losses are the wind in their sails. Losses are their artistic muse. They give the appearance, in these blogs, of having little emotional committment to the team during a given game. The very concept of “rooting” for the team is beneath them. They sit back and ridicule, and revel in their cynicism. The fact that the game is played by human beings, who sweat and try, and fail at times, is laughable to them.

Zum, just sparing others below. If you’re a poet, then you know smiles mean nothing without frowns.

Compare the Niners and SF Giants. No one sat around and sang “be happy” when Dallas or NYG ended some nice seasons. You could cheer for Steve Young and still get frustrated with some of his late game moves. When Seifert had Grbac kneel at the GB eight yd line to settle for a (futile) FG? Grrrr. If the SF Giants’ front office ran the Niners, we’d talk about the Niners like, say, the Chargers. “That Don Coryell was an innovator. And Dan Fouts? Great guy. I love the powder-puff blue jerseys.”

I liked the Niners plenty in the Brodie days. I love the Niners of the Nolan-Singletary days, no matter how shitty and maddening some of their seasons have been. I don’t crap on Alex Smith – ask Chuck. Yet there’s nothing wrong with it either. It’s a discourse. You’ve been conditioned to be happily indifferent about the Giants under the righteous pretense of loyalty.

Twin’s musing about next year’s lineup is too real. Giants were rightly worried about mortgaging the future in 2007. You could see real game in Cain, Wilson, Tim; Dirty was an intriguing project; Bum and Alderson were top picks. That was four years ago. In 2011? Don’t mortgage the future.

The talent and depth of SF’s pitching staff is fleeting by its very nature and cost – ask the A’s, ask Lowry, ask Nathan’s agent, ask Tim Alderson. Larry and Brian have done nothing competent – absolutely nothing – to seize this moment. And I’m going to be pissed about it and moan and question Happy Mealers about it.

So, to steal an old Flavor lead in, Cody Ross – c’mon down. Improvement at the plate, like in July, will give the entire NL a real scare.
