A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

1.78 ERA/.182 BA against

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 1, 2010

Those are the pitching staff numbers for September–and that includes the 10-run Zits game in Colorado. Truly amazing and probably the best month of pitching by a staff ever (Elias?)…..

After the Yankees clinched a playoff spot, my daughter’s grandpa, a diehard Yankee fan, barely cleared his throat in celebration. “They’re playing horrible, we’ll win nothing this year,” he grumbled. After I told him that if the Giants make the playoffs I was going to die my hair black and party like it’s 1999, he just stared at me with a confused look on his face…..

I cannot fathom the depth of the depression I will sink into if we lose 4 straight to the Padres right now…….

ESPN reported it is the 5th lowest ERA by month in modern baseball history…the lowest since Koufax-Drysdale…

  2. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 1, 2010 at 6:39 am

interesting. Take out the 10 run deal and it would have to be the lowest even if you take out the highest run game the other 4 teams ahead of us allowed

I was impressed, but I was thinking it was just some sort of freaky streak, and that it wouldn’t necessarily carry over to the playoffs, where they would be facing potent lineups and high pressure. And then came the Colorado series. Lincecum and Cain locked the Rockies down, under playoff-like stress. There are now no doubts that SF pitching is capable of competing and winning in the post season, against anybody.

At this point, the only real unknown is Sandoval. We can be fairly sure of what we are going to get from everybody else, and IMO it is enough to guarantee that the Giants will be very competitive in the post season. I wouldn’t say they should be favored, but they can play with anybody.

Sandoval has been horrible, but in the last two he has been looking and talking like he might be able to contribute. I think if that happens the Giants turn the corner from competitive to favorites against all NL teams except the Phils.

…Panda has changed his stance and his bat. IF he’s even close to recapturing some of the Kung Fu Panda magic, then the Giants will have the offense to complement their pitching.

Let’s get something straight- do not EVER call me out on the Splash, you cocksucker. I have never said this before because I didn’t want to get into it even more-but SealClubber called me in the ICU at USF to insult me in my hospital bed. I will always call him out. Now get the fuck out of here.

If BF tells me I’m not welcome here, then I’ll leave and never return, but you telling me to leave is nothing but bullshit.

      • vrrbrcrrr's avatar vrrbrcrrr said, on October 1, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Just a little while ago I reread my posts, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, this morning, afternoon or evening, that even comes close to a “call out”. Even the 9:15 post that seems to have offended you isn’t a “call out”.

Now if you WANT a call out, I guess I could oblige you, because there is a lot of ammunition available, but I’m in too good of a mood to do much more than play with you while I await the beginning of the game…

I have based my “responses” on what has been written on the blog, both the Splash and to a lesser extent here on the Flap… what occurs outside that parameter is unimportant to me, and shouldn’t be important to me ~ that you apparently have a personal problem with Seal outside of the blog is not my problem, nor should it be… and I will not allow it to be.

This season, since August, you have been TOLERATED on the Splash… yes, that’s right, tolerated… partly out of respect for your knowledge of baseball, a knowledge that goes far beyond what the average fan can grasp, and partly because you have been, or were, entertaining. But this year you have fouled the waters of the Splash, and even done so here on the Flap. The “civil war” that occurred on the Splash was caused by you, and everyone here knows it. Yes, Stan and others stepped over the line, but you pushed him over that line, just as you have goaded and baited many others ~ even the Flap was almost shut down because of you. There are a lot of fans, mostly here, but I include myself in that list of fans, who have made excuses for you because of your ailments, but it doesn’t change the fact that YOU are the cause of most if not all of the bitterness on the Splash, and YOU are the root cause for most of the fighting that takes place here on the Flap.

I’m tired of you attacking anyone who doesn’t agree wholeheartedly with your point of view… and so are many others on the Splash as well as here. As with all things in life, there is more than one viewpoint, and as we all know, multiple points of view can, from their respective perches, be correct. While in past years I have witnessed you debate points of view ~ elegantly, I might add ~ and you have usually won those discussions [although BigFlavor bested you on occasion], but this year you have not “debated”, you have decreed, and in the process have gone out of your way to insult those who don’t agree with you. As I have said to you before, you have become a shadow of what you once were, and I am sorry for that, because as your ability to make your point crystal clear has declined, you have turned into a desperate, thin-skinned old fool! And as we all know, there’s nothing worse than an old fool.

Take your meds, dude… or whatever you need to shove at least one finger into the hole that most of us call reality… because with this attack on me, you’ve moved into some bizarro world that only makes sense to you.

Twin, I respect your baseball knowledge, I envy your willingness to actually research baseball facts, lore and statistics, and as I have throughout my tenure on the Splash, I have, and will continue, to acknowledge that you know more than I insofar as baseball is concerned. But dude, you need to lighten-up… the Giants are on the verge of clinching the NL West ~ don’t ruin it for me, or anyone else. Enjoy it, please… we’ve all waited a long time for this.

I am not your enemy… I’m just not always on your side, blindly agreeing with you.

Just back from biz trip to NYC….weird sitting in hotel room watching SF games end at 1 AM. Pitching and Earl Weaver ball rule….that’s what won it for Yanks last year. I thought for sure that a team with firepower of Angels 2009 could hang with NY, but Yanks shut them down, and Philly too. SF can shut down anyone just as well, imo.

Great to see them hang on to division lead this week and put stranglehold on Pads…time to end all suspense.

  7. Sportdude's avatar Sportdude said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:27 am

2010 Giants will be the 88 Dodgers. Clutch hits from the players we expect (Posey, Huff) and an out of nowhere performance. Panda wins NL playoff MVP.
Cain Linecum duo will dominate, but Sanchez will tip us over the edge. 3 dominant starters.
We must win tonight, and hope for a Cinci loss so we get Atlanta in the 1st round, and the Cinci game we came back from 10-1 only to lose will not come back to haunt us!

  8. BaggerVance's avatar BaggerVance said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:39 am

As long as we win one of the next three we get Atlanta at home, unless the Pads and Braves tie and the Pads win the one-game playoff. Then we’d get the Reds at home.

  9. ferrethead's avatar ferrethead said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:40 am

Bagger – the Giants will pretty much have to play Atlanta – two teams from the same division can’t face each other in the first round of playoffs…

Go Giants – Go Orange Fridays!!!!!!!!

    • BaggerVance's avatar BaggerVance said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:45 am

Exactly, that’s why they will unless the Pads take two of three from us and the Braves lose two of three to Philly. The Pads and Braves wouyld have a one-game-playoff. If the Pads won that, they would be the wildcard and would play the Phillies, while we play the Reds.

      • BaggerVance's avatar BaggerVance said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:52 am

My bad. The Braves would have to get swept and Pads win two of three for the one-game playoff between them, but there’s still a possibility.

  10. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:41 am

Yeh, moving Cain up, to me, sends the signal that Zitio isn’t going to keep his #2 spot in the playoff rotation. My thought is, do away with ANY hope for the Pads by shutting them down in game 1. Zito would likely get through a 5.2 inning, 4 walk, clusterfuck of a start. We might win, we might not. Just put the teamon Cain’s back, and shquash all hope . . .

As far as Panda goes, he said he worked with Bam Bam a few days ago, and went over tapes from last year when he was in the groove. He said they saw some things that the fixed.

If so, why the hell didn’t you do this 2 months ago, Panda?

    • BaggerVance's avatar BaggerVance said, on October 1, 2010 at 8:47 am

Unfortunately, he did. After the allstar break, Panda went on a little tear and said that durring the break he reviewed tape with Bam Bam and his brother and found something in his step toward the pitcher. He hit well for about 4 games, then rverted back to Pablo Strandemall. Hopefully, this time he reverts to KFP.

#2 in the playoff rotation? Zito? You’ve gotta be kidding me. Maybe with the A’s. Not here. Lincecum and Cain give the Giants a great shot at going up 2-0 against ANYBODY. There’s your 1,2.

Has to be Torres, Flav. He was the biggest surprise to me. He wasn’t even the starting CF opening day. He forced himself into the lineup, and became the catalyst down the stretch. The fact that he came back from his appendicitis earlier than expected, and has a couple big bombs (and steals, and catches) to show for it, just cements the deal.

Can they even be called “fans” after 27 WS titles and an annual $200M payroll? The only thing they are concerned with every year is not IF they will win the division or the WC, or hit 100 Ws, but which one, or two will happen. And, winning the WC pisses them off — that’s a bad year. Give the Giants a $200M payroll, and we’ll all be geniuses…

Dirt– I’ll kick the stats down a little later– wordpress.com kinda sucks when compared to the google analytic tracker (which wordpress.com won’t let you put into your HTML for tracking purposes). WordPress counts the number of times someone clicks on your url or on different pages within the site. They don’t count my hits so that’s good. But they don’t show me how many specific IP addresses come to the blog each day— I haven’t checked it in a while but the number of hits a day will average around 1800–2200 hits a day with the worst days on Sundays for some reason. But I’ll check and get back to ya. Craig

Tough call on the Willie Mac award (I do like the fact that the players vote on it).
That said, for his leadership, lightening up the clubhouse, talking management into looking at Pat the Bat AND wearing a red thong, I’d vote for Huff.
For his fighting spirit, being the spark plug that we needed AND rubbing dirt in a fresh wound I’d give the Hutch award to Torres.
For 47 saves (and counting) AND orange shoes I’d give the team MVP to Wilson.

Everyone listed (if you include Wilson and also Cain) is deserving. In my mind, so many have stepped up at one time or another this year, it’s been amazing.

The Willie Mac award is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the spirit and leadership” consistently shown over the years by Stretch. All the guys BF listed have some claim to it. I give it to Huff. I give MVP to Torres, Wilson a close second, Huff 3rd. Most critical/key/clutch play of the year (so far): Uribe HR against LA that won the game 5-4.

What would be the most fitting way to win tonight? How about?:

    -Matt goes 8 strong innings
With the score tied in the bottom of the 8th Torres gets a hit, steals second, and scores on a 2 out hit by either Huff or Posey.
Fear the Beard Wilson closes it out, naturally with a whiff for the 3rd out.

I didn’t include Wilson but I could have—didn’t want to go more than 5 and I don’t see how you omit any of those 5. I think that Wilson is more of a candidate for the League MVP award than anyone else on the team and I bet he has a good showing in terms of votes….

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 1, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Some MVP votes most certainly. CY votes would be nice too but, historically, maybe not. At least as Loo pointed out, when Beck had 48 saves he got bupkis

  44. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 1, 2010 at 1:04 pm

“historically” isn’t going to play out this year–I don’t think. The Mariners are shutting Felix down with 13 wins and say they think he’s already won the CY so he doesn’t need the Sun start– with 13 wins. Crazy.
My vote for the Willie Mac award was Posey. I love Torres and will cheer his victory when he wins it. But if it was my vote Posey would beat him by a whisker, followed by Burrell, Uribe and finally Huff……..

I’ll let the players decide the Willie Mac….they know what’s up inside the clubhouse…On the field, while everyone has contributed to put them in this position, the 2 rookies have made it happen. Mad Bum to stabilize the 5th SP, and of course the Buster, who with no doubt, the team took off when he assumed full time C duty.

I think it’s cool that so many of us fans remember that game as one of the greatest ever – even though it was a loss. That JT homer was just monumental. Let’s hope for some moments like that but with a better outcome this year.

Back in the winter when I first heard that “grab your seats, it’s magic inside” slogan, I thought it was ridiculous. Of course, they had to drop the weird shit about grabbing seats at some point — I mean, people either bought season tix or they didn’t. But the magic part had some life to it. Now I’ll be damned if I don’t believe it.

Huff for the WMac Award. Assuming he starts tonight — this will be his 155th game of the season. Remember at the start of the season everyone predicted Huff would sit occassionally, if only for defensive reasons? Remember when Posey got called up everyone predicted Huff would sit against lefties? Remember when Burrell joined the team everyone predicted Huff wouldn’t be able to cover RF? And his heart-of-the-order numbers speak for themselves. In other words, insofar as leadership is by example, he’s the man.

It’ll be really interesting to see what the players decide.

This is so awesome. The WMA could go to Torres, Huff, Posey, Wilson, Uribe, Burrell, Wilson, or Cain. And you can say the same about almost all of them for team MVP. That’s what IS so magical about this team. There is no one superstar standout that can be pointed out and said, “he’s the reason they’re here.” It’s a total team effort with almost every player on the roster coming up big at times. So, as far as the Willie Mac… you’re all fucking right and the Pads are fucking out!

More excitement around here today than when a bumblebee got into Trustfund Tillie’s knickers. Bet The City’s abuzz. Gonna be weird for those visitors to McCovey Cove coming from down there in north suburban Tijuana. Hope Baer and his braintrust have the sense to crack out a nice big “Happy Birthday to You” over the PA system when Matt nails it down, or at least leaves it to the BP sporting a big lead. Time he got a little compensation for all that heartbreaking lack of support over the years.

Looking to an Orange and Black Rocktober.

  54. BaggerVance's avatar BaggerVance said, on October 1, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Kat, I like your take on the best scenario for the Giants to win the game tonight, but you missed a couple things. It’s got to be a 0-0 tie going into the bottom of the eigth, when Torres gets the hit, steals second and Huff drives him in. (It should be Huff for all the years of not even sniffing the postseason and Posey has a whole career in front of him. Huff should be the one to get the walk-off to get in. Not to mention it would be even more dramatic with two outs.) With the way these two teams pitch and tend not to hit, I expect nothing less than a pitchers dual. Hell, maybe it should be a perfect game for Cain and a shutout for Clayton going into the bottom of 8 with Torres reaching on an Eckstein error (honestly, how many times has that fucker robbed us this year?), then Huff drives him in on a gapper to 421 and legs out the inside-the-parker just to remind us of his first one way back in April.

Bagger,I was thinking of a blowout theory as well. The Giants bat around in the first inning.Panda hits a rare homer right handed, and a flustered Richards gives up a solo homer to Matt as well, because that’s what birthday boys do.The Pads become dejected, start using subs in the second inning to get some youngsters some playing time.David Eckstein upset all game, first cause his Fag arm can’t even throw out a runner at first on a routine play, and later getting tossed arguing strike calls on balls that replay shows to be pretty much down the middle, and the crowd laughs at him.By the sixth,A Gonz has contacted his agent about F/A off season trades.Cain slams down the door on a complete game shutout, and on a rare occasion for him, gives Latos a snake eye in their dugout just before he strikes out a Hariston brother to wrap it up.

    • James's avatar James said, on October 1, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I think Huff has been every bit as indispensable as Torres. You could almost make that argument for Burrell or Posey — w/o either, the Giants are probably tied w/ SD right now. At least in terms of run productivity, Huff is the MVP. And his SB percentage leads the league!

IMO, the team is dead meat without Torres leading off, covering the OF and providing the only speed on the bases. But to top it off, he has hit for power. Easy MVP.

And a no brainer as the Mac winner. This was Secretariat pulling away in the Belmont. Huff had no chance. Should have been unanimous. A 32 yr old with 11 yrs in the minors who was considered a 4th OF at best? Hollywood should be calling.
