A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Fear The Weird Beards……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 4, 2010

After not being here since 2003, this is just all about kicking back and enjoying the moment–there”s some second guessing going on, but that’s mostly about the black dye job i did to my head about a half hour after that incredible game. Mental note: the next time I decide to dye my hair in an attempt to peripherally involve myself in something I’m not actually involved with, wait a day and then make the call…….

A few “congrats” to get out of the way:

Congrats to MacDog for winning the season end contest, sponsored by TWINFAN– and Twin, your generosity throughout the year was appreciated by all who participated though a little bit more by the 4 guys who won– off the top of my head that would be James, Stix, SAN DIGGITY DAWG, and Macdog. Did I leave anyone out? Seriously Michael, I appreciate you for everything you do.

Congrats to BLADE who won The Flap Fantasy Baseball league. He led for most of the year, withstood a run in Sept from me and GH (as well as a weird, 4 pt jump from TIZZLE who somehow took 2nd place yesterday) but ultimately took home the coveted first place broken Rich Aurilia bobblehead doll. Blade, I’ll hook up with you later this month to get a mailing address–Twin is much more diligent and responsible when it comes to shipping prizes so be patient…….

Congrats to ME for not shutting this place down. I’m an emotional person prone to impulsive decisions (see: my head) and while I don’t always enjoy getting up at 5am to load up all the bells and whistles that hypnotize you on a daily basis, the fact is I really love this place and look forward to interacting with all of you every day–  you regulars are the best Giants fans in the virtual world……

And finally, congrats to all the *weird beards* who made all this happen. I can’t remember a season that gave us so many exciting games, interesting personalities and intriguing side stories. I am just so goddamn happy for guys like Aubry Huff who finally got to take part in all this. Buster Posey jumping up from the dish with a totally awkward completely genuine celebration–I think I looked the same way when my Little League team won the city World Series. Scrap heapers like Uribe and Burrell who have tasted a World Series win before but who might have thought deep down that they would never have a chance to taste it again. Finally getting his shot at 32 and turning himself into the team MVP–Andres Torres. How often does that happen? It’s a first. And then there’s Bochy– After the YEARS of crap and second guessing he’s taken from so many giants fans, I almost got tears in my eyes watching him come out of the dugout yesterday with his arms raised and that big goofy smile on his face–just as he doesn’t argue with the umps very well he could also work on his celebrations. But that was a moment of rare genuine happiness that the public got to see—-one we should all consider ourselves lucky to have gotten to share. And getting to do it against his former team, the one that basically showed him the door years ago, must have been equally satisfying. Bochy deserves our honor and respect for what he’s done with this team in 2010…….

Of course I want this World Series win. Who wouldn’t? But whatever goes down in the post season, whether it’s 3 and out or an ultimate win, the magic of this season will live with me forever. The 2010 Giants. Just as I typed that I got the chills…..

I’ve always been into the lesser guys, the role players, the fallen… that’s why this team is so easy for the Everyman to root for, it’s a team of rejects, AAAA guys, fallen idols, reputed basket cases.. vets seeking redemption, young guys who just want a taste, the vets like Huff and Fruckie- to experience what so many of their peers speak of. Goddamn, there ought to be a way to sneak Winn in there. Maybe he can wear a Guillen mask.. 1700+ games and one of basebal’s class guys has never seen the postseason…

Not sure if that’s a shot or not. Whatever. All except one kid recovered from the sausages, BTW.

A shot? Why? How? It made perfect sense.

That makes it even tougher for Sabean and Bochy picking the postseason roster. Someone’s dream is going to get crushed.

I liked those types too, Twin. My favorite 60’s Yankee was named Roger……………………Repoz.

Like I said, with you I can’t tell. But yeah, I’m happier for Vern and Vera’s boy than I am for Buster, excited more for Torres than Timmy…going back, we both know it was Hal Smith witth the REAL clutch shot, not Maz. Carbo, not Fisk….

Shoot, Loo. Ethyl over Lucy? Rhoda over Mary, maybe; if Mary were busy or had a “headache”. Monica instead of Rachel, no problem. Thelma Lou instead of Helen, hell yeah, she’s tired of waiting for Barney to unload his pistol. Maybe even Millie over Laura Petrie, well, only if Laura moved to LA and I had 3 scotches and Millie promised to shut up. But, Ethyl over Lucy? That is seriously F’d up…

Meanwhile, in my hut, Ginger is finish combing her hair with a fishbone, and Mary Ann is painting my toenails — they’ve promised to do their amazing bad girl / good girl routine (MA is really the baaaaad girl off camera) with me after that idiot Gilligan brings me my second rum fizz and I bitch slap him outta the hut…

Underrated, under the radar, get it? Carney not Gleason. Jeff Leonard not The Thrill. Gates Brothers BBQ, not Arthur Bryant’s.

I need one more point from New England’s kicker for my fantasy team. Is that too much to ask? New England has 3 special teams touchdowns tonight. Amazing.

    Here’s my 25 man roster:

    SP-Lincecum,Cain,Sanchez,Bumgarner,Zito All make it.

    RP-Wilson,Romo,Lopez,Ramriez,Affeldt,Casilla… Left off Ray,Runzler,Mota

    OF-Torres,Burrell,Guillen,Ross, Scheirholtz,Rowand… Left off Velez,Ford

    C-Posey,Whiteside

    INF- Huff,Sanchez,Uribe,Sandoval,Fontenot,Renteria …Left off Ishikawa,Burris,Rohlinger

SP-Analysis: The only issue is Zito, but I don’t think the G’s leave him off the PO roster. He’s a veteran, has had a few brillant PO performances in the past, that’ll likely be enough for the Giants to carry him.If there’s a game 4,it will be interesting to see if the team calls on him or Bumgarner to take the ball. One of them will be moved to long relief,Bochy may prefer the veteran experience Zito brings to a pressure packed start.

RP-Analysis: The Giants are in the enviable position of having to many useful relievers without enough spots to go around.Ray’s a solid pitcher, but he’s been passed in the BP pecking order by Casilla and Ramirez, who have both been outstanding lately.Mota was impressive this past weekend against the Pads, but he’s only pitched 5 innings since Aug 22, no way he lands a spot with that little of use.Same with Runzler, missed too much time due to injury(2.2 IP since mid July)and the Giants can’t trust him with a spot in NLDS.

OF/INF-Analysis: Rowand’s in just like for Zito,Playoff experience, same with Renteria.Although if his elbow is not healthy, don’t be surprised to see Burris designated as the team’s backup at SS.Leaving Ishi off is a tough one,but chances are the Giants would rather keep Rowand since the Braves closer Billy Wagner and Johnny Venters are LH and Ishi hit only .111 against lefties so he would likely be passed over in late inning situations.

Here’s a thought…..If Guillen doesn’t make the squad, doesn’t it greatly reduce the need for Nate? We can kill 2 outfielders with one stone…

i could have given you the other 5 of the 9 players but I left that for you to figure…Don’t even include a name that isn’t among those 29…

    Michael has the 11 pitchers….

You know what I found? Since a lot of us don ‘t actually know each other…every time I read Pawlie’s posts…I hear Richard Burton’s voice.
    It has no significance, whatsoever.
But if one subscribes (and I’m not sure I do) to Dr. Madan Kataria’s guru laughter theory, it cracks me up.
So, next time Pawlie writes something..think of Richard Burton’s voice.
    It’ll make you smile.
eddacker, on the oher hand, sounds like a Californian, despite being across the pond.
Bobby Cox was blessed by a plethora of great pitchers. God bless him.
    So is Bochy.
In the lyrics of a Steve Allen song:
“This could be the start of something big….”

      Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
      But in Camelot, Camelot
      That’s how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
      In short, there’s simply not
      A more congenial spot
      For happily-ever-aftering than here
      In Camelot.

Mrs. Howell as in Eunice “Lovey” Wentworth Howell? The rich, spoiled socialite, married to Thurston Howell, III?

    Umm . . . You’re sick Loo.

the interesting thing about playoff series is, more often than not, it’s some bit player that comes out of the woodwork to steal victory from defeat: mark lemke, bucky freaking dent, david eckstein (who just kills the giants) etc.

for the first time other than 2002, this (sf) team has the role players, the guys who get the big hit out of nowhere. they don’t have an ounce of quit in them and the big hit can come from anywhere.

and they can throw the ball a bit.

  13. James's avatar James said, on October 4, 2010 at 11:00 pm

They can throw the ball a bit, sometimes a bit too much. They will have to throw strikes to ATL, which led the league in BBs and OBP.

I’m feeling a sweep of the Braves coming up. Bing–Bang–Boom. No fuss, no muss.

Rowand makes the team and starts in CF on Thursday.

“Why not, it can’t fucking hurt.”

Our lineup still stinks to high heaven, and for the love of Christ, NO Whitey.

Seems hard to analyze the PS roster without understanding the attraction of Guillen. He’s an easy drop for most evaluators … except that he’s been starting almost every day, so why would Bochy change now? Because he no longer has the defensive substitution options he had in Sept?

On the pitching side, again, HTF do I know how they evaluate MadBum’s arm? Zito is an easy drop on the surface, and about three levels below the surface. But … if they are really, really concerned about protecting MadBum, then whaddya gonna do?

Hey, it’s an off day … why does Chris Rose have a television career? And what is really going through Brian Wilson’s mind on the mound in the 9th. He has the craziest eyes I recall.
