A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hubris takes a big HIT

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 17, 2010

Sportsbook.com has a prop bet where you can bet on who the first player to hit a home run will be. Cody Ross was 25-1 yesterday (as he is today)–the only 2 players worse than Ross are the pitchers at 30-1. Hilarious. Cody’s story continues to amaze– languishing away in the losing confines of Florida….fast forward a couple of months…..now he’s Jeffrey Freaking Leonard reincarnated in the playoffs with an entire National spotlight cast upon him. Really, it’s an amazing story…..

I go back and forth on how Dirrrrrty is gonna do today. He’s been so lights out lately and Philly has trouble with lefties. But he can also be prone to emotions getting the best of him. I guess it will all come down to how he manages that adrenaline.  What I DO know is that Philly got punched in the mouth by a team that was supposed to enter their park last night and promptly drop the soap. NONE of last night surprised any of us here. Why was it so confounding to the National media guys?

Random side bar: I know this is a bit hypocritical coming from the guy with dyed black hair, but are their two lamer looking heads of hair than Mitch Williams and Eric Karros? They look utterly ridiculous……

Lovely morning. Laying in bed drinking coffee and reading the online version of the Philadelphia Enquirer. If Sanchy is on his game tonight its going to be a cold, rough bitter monday morning out that way tomorrow.

    What a win.

True that it is hard to know with Sanchez today but this is the guys that put SF in first and won the west. The pressure games he’s pitched can only help. It is amazing to think how far this guy has come in the past year.

Worse head of hair? Trump and Jerry Buss??

    Go Giants!

Speaking of hair- I’m watching the replay of the game on the MLB network, and the Philly fans whistling at Lincecum is one of the stupider things ever. For one thing, Werth has real long hair, too; and for another thing, it just makes the Philly fans look like reactionary idiots, who are about as clever as a block of wood.

Two things IMO there is a “Chance” the Giants sweep today.
#2, to address BF’s concerns with Dirty, He has grown by leaps and bounds this year. and I go back to the San Diego game a must win to clinch the division, Dirty gave up a run I think and Buster came out and talked to him and he got the next guy out, Sanchez just moved on!! and this is why I think the Giants can sweep today!! Granted this is a bigger stage and the Adrenalin will be flowing, but you have to think that the philly’s might press a little, the Giants took the home opener. Lets go Giants. Don’t stop Believin!!

It’s a bit warm today, low 70s, so it shouldn’t be quite as chilly tonight.

Pawlie, sorry, didn’t see your post until late last night. Are you going? I’m still thinking about it, and it’ll probably be a last-minute decision. I’m out for a couple hours, will check back in later.

Oh what a wonderful morning. O what a beautiful day. Philadelphia fans are in mourning, but they’re happy and glad by the Bay.

Said it before, saying it again. This team is loaded with characters ~ and character. Whatcha got: Longhaired hippy type drawing wolf-whistles for his “cute butt”; red thong wearing Huff the Magic Dragon whom no other team wanted; circus clown wannabe accidental Giant; Drrrrrty dealing loogie who just keeps getting nastier and nastier; ADHD track runner career minor leaguer; big ol’ Horse from Alabam; nother slow drawlin big countryboy from Caroline; goofball dyejob Blackbeard; pair of runts in the middle of things; reject from the Rays; fat Panda type and, oh, one young guy from Georgia who actually looks and acts like an athlete. Guess there’s gotta be one in every crowd. Guess there also has to be these days in MLB a Juan in every crowd too.

And they got the noive to call this collexion of misfits, rejects, weirdos and castoffs GIANTS? Yes, and we love em. In the quest for a Black and Orange October this oddball assembly of spare parts has won their way into our hearts. They ARE the Giants. It may remind oldtimers of some kinda Rube Goldberg contraption, all full of nuts and bolts and levers and gears. Kinda apropos for the season, however. San Francisco has finally gone and built itself the Halloween Machine.

I like the Fox use of graphics in the description of Tim’s pitching motion. I don’t remember what they called each step. I think the arm going down was called “the dangle.” They left out the fourth step though- the follow through, what Tim’s dad calls “reach for the dollar.”

  19. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on October 17, 2010 at 1:29 pm

We’ve seen and heard a lot of descriptions of Tim’s motion, and that Fox description was pretty concise and explanatory. Although, McCarver’s constant use of the word “violent” to describe Tim’s motion seemed out of place to me. I’ve never heard anyone describe Tim’s motion as violent. Usually, it’s described as a very efficient way to get maximum power from his smallish physique. They did well in comparing Tim’s motion to Sandy Koufax, but they missed stating the fact that it’s not a coincidence. Tim’s dad used Koufax as the model for developing Tim’s style.

  20. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on October 17, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Watching the game again on MLB, some of McCarver’s other obervations were actually pretty good. The cross-up passed ball between Lincecum and Posey, when Howard was batting, that put runners on second and third with two out, was well described. He said (talking about the catcher)- “When you’re expecting the local, and you get the express, it can take your head off.”

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 17, 2010 at 1:59 pm

I also noticed that McCarver’s catching commentary was pretty good.
btw, I didn’t realize the Raiders are so tough this year. geez.

  21. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on October 17, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Lincecum’s delivery maximizes his potential. I think they showed some little league pics of him at one time during the season and the delivery was the same even back then. If the torque he generates was going to lead to injury I think it would have by now.

It seems like any time a player doesn’t fit the physical mold that scouts and front office personel have been looking for the past couple of decades then there is some sort of knock on the player. The delivery is violent, plays bigger then he is. All that crap.

  22. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on October 17, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Why the obstinence with the pro set? As erratic as he’s been, Smith has clearly shown he and they can move the ball from the spread. As far as changing QBs now, I say no-his mission is clear : win this game or new QB next week. My other thought on that: not Carr. Nate is the only QB on the roster to go to if they bail on Smith.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 17, 2010 at 2:43 pm

If playing fucking Nate Davis assures us of getting the overall #1 pick so we can draft Andrew Luck, I’m all for it.

  28. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2010 at 2:48 pm

the only reason you go with Carr is too see if all of this is Smith’s fault (I don’t think it is, btw, this is about poor coaching and an awful game plan). If the offense takes off under Carr, you have found the problem. If not, get Singletary the fuck OUT OF HERE, let Manusky coach out the year, and “Hello Harbaugh and Andrew Luck in 2011″…..Smith ALWAYS moves the ball in the hurry up when he calls the plays. Give him a fucking game, let him call the game. It couldn’t get any worse. Alex looks afraid to call an audible. Is that pressure from Singletary? Can Alex just not see an 8 man front staring him down? I’d like to find out……..

  29. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Nate Davis will never play a down for this team as long as Singletary is coaching. Sing showed some ignorance, by the way, when he failed to pronounce the word “dyslexic” accurately when he said “Dyslektic? What is that?” and he said it a couple of times (interview over the Summer, I’m assuming some of you heard it on KNBR). It’s a learning disability you dumbass. Learn how to pronounce it first, then maybe learn what it is, THEN talk shit about it……….

You can tell when a coach is lacking in the Xs and Os, all the way from the pros down to youth leagues. When they lack Xs and Os, they don’t know what to tell the players other than constantly challenge their character, and talk about how you have to want it more than the other team. Rah rah stuff. Meanwhile the other team wins because they have the Xs and Os.

I may juust talk to myself for a bit. Only saw the bottom 7th after I got out of ER, in the waiting room. Quite enough… I guess Alex rebounded enough to handle the Raiders anyway.

  66. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 17, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Yep, after a very slow start for Alex and the entire offense (OL, in particular) things picked up in the second half. Alex saved his best throws for the 3rd dn conversions, and we kind of got a little roll going.

He and Crabtree seem to be pretty well in sync. And we know how well he meshes with Vernon. You just had that feeling Frank was gonna bust a good one, and I’ll be damn if he didn’t just do that.

But what can’t get lost in this much needed victory is that Singletary and the entire coaching still stinks on ice. Threw the challenge flag on a play that could not be challenged (forward progress) and by the grace of God still wiped out the Raiders next play (14 yd run) because the challenge (if even it wasn’t one) stopped the other play from happening.

The HC should know the goddamn rules of the game he’s playing. That’s his job. And he just looks plain lost out there standing on the sidelines. He might work if he had some really great coordinators at his disposal a la KC, but he doesn’t.

They can’t figure out a way to get both Gore and Westbrook on the field at the same time more than once or twice? Gimme a break. No imagination, and no strategy being implemented at 4949 Centennial Blvd. We are getting seriously out-coached on a weekly basis, and it’s not even close.

Oh, almost forgot about all the goddamn penalties. That’s 100% on Singletary and his entire shitty staff. My God was it abominable this afternoon. 11-143? We out-Raidered the Raiders. Just horrible.

And where was the continuity? When they play calling was good, poor execution. Then when we went back to our staple of “Frank up the gut” best blocking I’ve seen in awhile on that play. Goddamn the hated Moran Norris made one helluva block to spring Frank. Took out two guys that sealed the alley (“we gonna get a seal here, and a seal here, and run it up the….alley!:) Boo-yah!

  68. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 17, 2010 at 11:22 pm

And who the hell woulda thunk that the Raiders would miss Bruce Gradkowski like the family pet?

Campbell (8 of 21, 83 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs) was historically awful. His 10.7 quarterback rating was the worst compiled against the 49ers since the Saints’ Archie Manning had an 8.7 rating in 1972.

Poor old Archie Manning. I always think of him like I do of the great Alydar. He was second best on the field like Alydar was to Affirmed in the Triple Crown, but after they both retired and went out to the shed, they put out some of the best goddamn progeny that I’ve ever seen. Some guys and horses do their best work away from the actual playing field.
