A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Moments In Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 27, 2010

I’ve said this several times, I couldn’t be having more fun with all of this. I love what this has done to my community—everyone has come together in their own unique way but for a common reason. I never lived in a small town but it’s felt like a small town the last few weeks…….

But believe me, I get it,  there is a huge difference between me and 98% of the rest of these *giants fans*. I’m not hating on them or anything, it’s just a fact. There is the *band wagon jumper* who comprises about 75% of this current fan base. Then there’s a group of 23% who make up the real Giant fan base. Then there’s 2% of me. And all of you people……

I haven’t allowed myself to think about the outcome of this World Series for even one second. And it’s got nothing to do with fearing a loss. I’m a Giants fan, I can do torturous losing with the best of them. Bring it on, 24/7.  I can tolerate losing while standing on my head. While eating a sandolicious sando from The Cheese House. It doesn’t phase me in the slightest….

What I fear is winning this thing. I simply have no idea how I’m going to react or what I’ll do when the final out is secured. So I don’t think about what might happen. I think about the moment I’m in right now and the moment that’s coming right after it. And so on and so on….

All I know for certain is that I will stop to appreciate the moments I have today. They’ll be with me forever. I’ve been very good in my life at stopping time to appreciate something that is happening……. right……….then.

I remember with great detail all of my greatest moments of being a Giants fan. I remember the first game my dad took me to, the Ed Haliki no hitter, not really understanding what all the fuss was about when the crowd went crazy after the final out…..I remember the white specks of paint on Mr Lovell’s radio that broadcasted the giants games while we played a million hours of ping pong through most of the ’80’s in the Lovell’s backyard…..I remember the tie-dye tank top I wore to the Dave Dravecky comeback game…..I remember falling to the ground so hard when Scotty Garrelts came within one out of a no hitter, that my knees were bruised for weeks…..I remember that sign they had out in right field at Candlestick that would count down the days till Pac Bell Park opened and being so bummed one day when it said “937”. “Why couldn’t that sign say *37*,” I thought to myself…..I remember heading through a tunnel so clean you could eat off it, up a stairwell and into the brilliant sunlight of Pac Bell Park, stopping at the top and saying out loud to no one in particular “No fucking way!”–the older, female usher leaned close to me and said “I feel the same way, now let me show you to your seats.”….I remember every single rush of adrenaline that Barry Bonds *gifted* me each time he would send one of his lasers down the right field line into the water…… I remember every word of the 5 minute conversation I had with my friend Chris last week as he proudly told me “The Cody Ross Story”…….And I will never forget my daughter’s giggle as she helped me dye this absurd beard last night…..

I woke up this morning to the blue light of my alarm clock that indicated 2:33am. Never was able to go back to sleep after that so it’s going to be a long day. But one thing is for certain. I will stop and appreciate ever moment of this day: The stains on my train seat. The first words Pawlie says to me when I meet him for the first time later this afternoon. The color of the finger nails of the woman selling me my hot dog. The roar from the crowd after Timmy throws his first strike. Everything.

Appreciating the moments that will stay with you forever. THAT is what life is all about, my friends. I’m 10 years old right now…..

I just clicked on CBS Sportsline and someone pinch me, we are in the Frickin World Series!!!! Is this for real????

I got the nasty round of golf out of the way yesterday. I needed the last three days to charge up and forget about the Saints fucking me in two do or die pools! (one pot is worth $150,000) and the fucking Saints can suck my balls!

But with all that out of the way and a Fantasy Football victory on Monday night on the backs of Hakeem Nicks and Dez Bryant, I am the most calm I have ever been before the start of a post-seaosn series. Confident now.

I am calling it now! Pat Burrell is going to take Cliff Lee deep tonight! Mark it down. 2-1 Giants victory and trhe whole baseball world that has already discounted the Giants will be in for the shock of a century…

Benjie is already a big story apparently. Sabean told Chron Live he knew he would trade Benjie after signing him, to which Benjie has replied he wished he would have known that or, “I would not have signed.” Also further that Sabean told him no such thing and, “He never tells me anything.”

Part 2 comes the revelation that Posey and the Kid were the last of the SPs to connect, as admitted by both. No secret Linc lays a lot of props for his two Cys at Benjie’s door. I still think this influenced Sabes decision to send Posey to Fresno for more seasoning behind the plate—the lack of confidence by the SPs and their respect for Benjie. Realize that this too meant Molina had to have a backup, which Sabes decided was the Prez, and so SF did not go looking anywhere else. Remember how much 1B Posey was playing when he first got here (and the response that got here)?

Interesting to see how this plays out. Molina says he is retiring, and he gets a ring either way. That’s quite an accomplishment for a player only Mets were interested in off season and only for 1 year at minimal $$$. He is a hard guy to understand, even when he says the right things. There always seems to be something under the surface where his pride is wounded, an extra burden he carries with him everywhere like a shield against naysayers. He can still have the last laugh on everyone.

Willed…Hmm,On the one hand,Bengie’s kind of being a whiny bitch considering he’s making 4+M, It didn’t seem like there was anyway he was going to get that from another team, and he ended up going to a contender and playing in the World Fucking Series.Poor.poor pitiful him.On the other hand,Sabean really does come off as a major prick most of the time, and this is no exception. So I’d say there are no winners here.

4 more wins for glory,me buckos,4 more wins. Can the lads pull it off? Why of course they can. They’ve won 7 of the last 10 against two tough playoff clubs. They’ve played great great baseball and I see no reason why they can’t continue to do so.It’s a crazy world where a grueling seven months war of attrition is settled in a week of frenetic, knockout play.We all know anything can happen. We all know the baseball gods are petty, peevish, and cruel. To much of what happens is up to them, frankly and that’s awfully hard to take. But I’m confident about the Giants, just like every other Flapper and Flapperette. This team has been loose and relaxed, playing without nerves or fear,I like that.I think we all agree that the San Francisco Championship drought has gone on far long enough. It’s time to strap it on and win 4 more game and bring home the Commissioners Trophy!!!

Didn’t you also get into a Sports Illustrated photo while in left field at the Stick.

All we need is one game over 500 over the next 7 games.

I’m of such a mixed mind on whether I want to be there, I haven’t been in years now, I honestly do not remember which game was last, live. I worry I’d seize, however irrational that is. So I’ll twitch at home 😉
As we all know, these things are impossible to handicap but I’ll have another go anyway: Lee is susceptible to the long ball, I think. I do concur with BigHead:: go to right, and then someone will yank him when he adjusts: Pat or Uribe… My MVP candidate: the Energizer, Andres Torres. I’m still more on board with Cain tonight but who the hell are any of us to question the Bonehead anymore? Question has become those RHers in the pen, might see Mota with a bigger role this week…

I love what Torres was doing at the end of that series with the Phillies, even laying down the bunt. Our offense will go as well as Torres plays and hopefully he is 100%! If he struggles, we wil struggle. But watch my prediction on Burrell. I thought he was swinging real well against the Phillies and was just missing puting a couple out of the park…

That’s the best ownage of any Giant. 2nd choice Cody Ross, only has 2 career Ab’s but his one hit was a Grand Slam.

    ESPN: “EXPERTS”

22 pick the Rangers and only 6 the Giants (if some of these idiots think the series will go 7 games and the Giants lose, they are smoking something!)…

    Jeff Bradley
    ESPN The Magazine
in 7 San Francisco has the starting pitching and matchup relievers to control Texas’ offense and the long-awaited NL home-field advantage will pay off.
    Howard Bryant
    ESPN.com
in 6 Unlike the Phillies, whose offense was struggling entering the playoffs and never recovered, the Rangers’ offense is American League-ready and clicking. Too many weapons.
    Dave Campbell
    ESPN Radio
in 6 The Rangers have more weapons. I love the Giants’ ability to mix and match in the ‘pen, but worry about Jonathan Sanchez, a great talent who lost his release point and would be due to pitch Games 3 and 7.
    Jim Caple
    ESPN.com
in 6 Because San Francisco has the better pitching, Cliff Lee can pitch only so many games, and I’m a homer when it comes to the Giants.
    Tristan Cockcroft
    ESPN Fantasy
in 6 Cliff Lee is about as automatic as it gets, even if Tim Lincecum is his opponent, so that’s two games; and the Rangers have been plenty aggressive, not to mention getting the clutch hits, to steal two more from Games 2-4 and 6.

    Misc. notes:
Hard to believe Unca Goober had his guys throwing the fastball in on Cody again and again-he didn’t miss. Cody will chase off the plate wide, I expect Lee to go that way…
Hamilton is flat fucking scary, much more so than even Howard or Utley, this guy is a GREAT hitter. He cannot beat them, make the Impaler do it…
Buster has had troubles throwing, or rather getting a grip to throw,he has to nail a guy or two to slow it down …
Darkhorse for hero: the man I’ve loved to hate: the Frucker. Andres can set that up as the doubles man..
I’ve got 20 for the contest now. Might go to the third tie breaker. Remember, previous winner would get a $100 gift certificate, system would go to second place. I’ll finish the build before today’s game.

    “What, the curtains?”

“No lads, not the curtains! They told me I was daft to hold a World Series in a swamp, but I held it anyway, just to show ‘em. The first Series sank into the swamp. So I held a second Series. That one sank into the swamp. So I held a third one. That one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.

But the fourth Series, lads, stayed oop! And that’s the one they you’re going to inherit”

Crunch Time in less than seven hours. Been seven rather dead years since the last one. This go-round the Giants have the edge in pitching while the other guys go with the big-boppers. Lilac bushes in front of the room have been shedding leaves as the winds and the rain have transformed the season here in the Heartland. But my heart is a couple thousand miles away, a place where i resided for awhile. Yeah, was in The City 41 years ago today, living at the corner of Waller and Webster ~ block off Fillmore ~ block off Haight. Funny how that place lingers in the memory ~ like in Tony Bennett’s song.

Can they do it? How long have we been asking that question? Back around the Break it was a matter of can SF pick up the additional parts to make a run for it. Bit further on and it was can this team possibly make enough of a run to catch up in the wildcard contest. When the Dagos started slipping it was a matter of whether this team would be able to beat them, the LaBumbos and the Rox. We did not know that one till the very last day of the season when things got kinda Drrrrty for the pretenders. Then it was the Braves, with that one jarring loss and the sequence of nail-biters. Along came the Philthies and all the Poobahs said we didn’t have a chance. Some more torture and in 6 the NL Pennant flew over China Basin.

Now it’s Texas. Can there be two more different cities on the Continent than Dallas and San Francisco? Buckle of the Bible Belt vs Sodom by the Sea. Sixteen ounce steaks vs Haute Cuisine. Lone Star beers chasing doubles of Jack vs multitudes of microbrews, fine wines and long, soothing draws on a fine example of the glassblowers’ art. Steers vs Queers is the latest flog on the blog. How bout summer temps at 101 in the shade vs 56 in the fog?
Politically? We don’t even dare to go there. How bout we just say that it could hardly be more polarized and that the politics of the two cities pretty much reflects the differentiations in their respective cultures. Like could you imagine Prop 19 passing in Texas, even if that bunch of cottonmouth fundies enjoyed the rights of Initiative and Referendum? Could be in a few weeks time there will be a host of short-term refugees from just north of the Rio Grande heading to the Golden West for a few tokes of freedom before they need to head back to the land of chiggers, scorpions and sand-fleas.

So it’s a contest, all right ~ a contest between a militaristic, corporatized, ego-driven hoo-haas and their clear dominance in dangerous lineup plus team speed versus a laid-back; urbane bunch of latte-sippers cheering one of the most dominant pitching staffs of the past 40 years or so, together with a set of weirdos, oddballs, castoffs, rejects and misfits who would get kicked the hell outta representing Dallas in a Texas minute.

This one could be a classic.

Ted; Okay, to be picky, it’s Arlington. But essentially Dallas is the big HooHaa in the Metroplex. Arlington is just a convenient neutral zone between Dallas and Fort Worth ~ a pair of cities at least as different from each other as Minneapolis and St. Paul ~ or SF and Oakland, for that matter.

I kind of got my wish, Tony Bennett will be singing “God Bless America” tonight. Two innings later he can break out with “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” after we beat the Rangers.

I’m a complete and utter nervous wreck. Good thing I swung by the pharmacy. Doc doesn’t know it, but she upped my meds threefold today. And that’s just to get me to the first pitch. All bets are off after that.

I think this is a game the Rangers need to take, considering how huge the expectations are on Cliff Lee. If the Giants pull one out like they did on Halladay in Game 1, the Rangers are in deep shit. Even though is at home, I think it is only one the Giants would like to have but don’t absolutely need.

    • Decap's avatar Decap said, on October 27, 2010 at 2:18 pm

      From Morosi at Fox:
Lee’s made eight career postseason starts. He’s 7-0 with a 1.26 ERA. He’s struck out 67. He’s walked seven. In October, at least, he can be mistaken for Sandy Koufax.

There’s probably a postseason loss in his future, but Wednesday’s not the night. No matter how well Tim Lincecum pitches, the Rangers will have a 1-0 lead when the World Series is one day old.

      Really? Tool…

  60. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on October 27, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Ken Rosenthal picks the Rangers but he throws out a nice stat on giants pitching

In fact, they have allowed just 80 runs in their last 36 games, including the postseason. Take away a 10-9 loss in Coors Field on Sept. 26, and the numbers drop to 70 runs in 35 games — two stinkin’ runs per game, and not a small sample, either.

But then he fucks up and puts this out there

I don’t know how that would happen, mind you, but the Giants have developed a unique knack for winning — and winning close games. Maybe they will pitch well enough to pull off another upset in the Series. Or maybe they finally will be overmatched by a superior team.

I’m guessing the latter, but at this point, who knows?

  61. Decap's avatar Decap said, on October 27, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Does anyone here actually sit and watch and AL game and think “Wow this is such a superior league with so much more talent?” To hear a lot of the stats people we should be if we aren’t…. I think basketball has the most obvious difference between two leagues, followed by football, but baseball I think has a marginal difference at best and it could be argued almost NO difference when you take away the DH. To say that you could take an .500 AL team would have a 20 win improvement by moving to the NL is ridiculous…. AL snobs are almost as bad as the East Coast bias ones…….

    • alex's avatar alex said, on October 27, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Baseball has a wider disparity in salaries for each team. Not sure what it’s like in hoops or other sports, but the Yankees have always spent and now Boston has the same deep pockets every year. I think by the time you get to the world series, the teams are so good it doesn’t matter. Some of those NBA finals seem one sided to me. Many fans though only tune in in October and to nuts like us, that’s band wagon jumping.

Round about an hour to go, gang. Everybody hyped? Everybody prepped? Not me. Yet. Friend stopped by, not a big baseball fan. Did some splainin for him. Briskly breezy, dank and northwoodsy up by here. Got some decent wood in main heating stove. Ooh. Just thought about hot, mulled cider. More likely brandy than Jack. Although Windsor whiskey is surprisingly amenable to blending into the mull. It’ll be brandy then. So up here its going all cool and mellow in a wood-heated house on a night quite unlike anything they got in Texas.

As a Giants fan since 54 and a wee bit of a family connexion to that Championship team and as a former denizen of The City, i’m getting ready for Timmy’s windup and expecting to see some mighty flailing going on.

  63. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 27, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Good pitching beats good hitting every time. Just go out there and give 110%. Not going to think about the DH right now. We’re going to take this one game at a time. We’re going to have to use our banjo hitters and manufacture some runs until our backs are against the wall. Then we’ll need to throw in some back to back jacks. Otherwise it’s all bush. remember, baseball is won between the lines. We gotta get to Lee early and often. Cuz we’re not going to catch him napping. We have to help Lincecum’s cause. Get in some good cuts. Remember, Hamilton’s a tough out. But Uribe can tie it up with one swing of the bat. We gotta wait for our pitches, see the ball well. But most of all remember, you can’t steal first base

And the last thing he said to me, “Ted,” he said, “sometime when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they’ve got and win just one for the Flapper. I don’t know where I’ll be then, Ted,” he said, “but I’ll know about it and I’ll be happy.”

I’m not gonna take this. Lee, he’s a dead man! Hamilton, dead! Guerrero.. Dead! You know I’m right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. The Giants gotta take these bastards. Now they could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think they have to go all out. 74. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 27, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    And finally:

Men, and ferret, all this stuff you’ve heard on ESPN and FOX about the Giants not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the series, is a lot of horse dung. The Giants traditionally love to fight. All real Giants and Flappers love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, big league ball players, the toughest boxers. The Giants love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. The Giants play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. The very thought of losing is hateful to the Giants. Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a world series by dying for his team. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his team. Now there’s another thing I want you to remember. I don’t want to get any messages saying that “we are holding our position.” We’re not holding anything. Let the Rangers do that. We are advancing constantly and we’re not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We’re going to hold onto him by the nose and we’re going to kick him in the ass. We’re going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we’re going to go through him like crap through a goose! Now, the Giant are a team – they live, eat, sleep, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The Rangers are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill *their* blood. Shoot *them* in the belly. We’re gonna keep fighting. Is that CLEAR? We’re gonna attack all night, we’re gonna attack tomorrow morning if it goes extra innings. If we are not VICTORIOUS, let no man come back alive! Thirty years from now, when you’re sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you, “What did you do during the 2010 World Series,” you won’t have to say, “Well… I shoveled shit in Arlington.”
