A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What a Day

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 28, 2010

There’s very little I can add to what I was part of last night. I’ve never been to anything like it. Sorry for the late post, I got home very late and had to wake up very early. I put 2 videos up below. Here’s a picture of me and Pawlie who i met before the game. Great guy.

    GO GIANTS!!

No need to apologize, Flav. Great fly over video and great you were able to meet up with Pawlie

You two lucky son of a guns brought the team 11 runs and a big W in Game 1. Go back and do it again tonight. I know 11 runs might be asking for much—I’ll settle for 10 tonight.

Guys. Sorry about that, but i got a longish posting right at the end of the previous thread. It’s maybe ok, but a bit longish. Surprise. Surprise.

Flav: Seeing you standing next to Pawlie, i now understand why you adopted your handle. Good thing you didn’t grow up in one of the little backwoods towns up this way. They would have recruited you for sure for one of those nine-man football teams in H.S. and you might have totally missed out on getting a decent baseball edumacation.

I don’t perceive the bias that many do. Baseball IS a working class, middle and eastern America game. It always has been. For ratings and perceptions to change, it must start with MLB, that’s not on TV: revenue sharing is a joke, regional regular season broadcasts are not mandated, the season ends 3 weeks late.. even with change, though, it’s just not the world it was when baseball was the national sport. If your children appeciate the beauty of it, you’ve passed on a great gift…

Is it possible that the Giants had a good idea about what kind of ballgame Bengie might call? They absolutely pounced on Lee and the relievers.

It seems like an odd choice to rest Bengie after he had such a good night last night.

The game last night was weird and wild and very satisfying. Much celebration at my house when Uribe blew the thing out of the water with his 5th inning bomb. It was hard to focus on the details at the time (for some of the players, as well, it seemed). But there were details.

The Giants took the first pitch against Lee a lot last night. When they did swing on the first pitch, they got two hits: (1) Sanchez hit his broken-bat double in the first inning on the first pitch he saw, and (2) Torres smacked his fifth inning double on the first pitch he saw at that AB. Otherwise, nada. In particular: (3) Renteria swung at and missed the first pitch he saw in the third inning, (4) as did Torres. (5) Uribe fouled off the first pitch he saw in the fourth. (6) And Huff fouled of the first pitch he saw in the fifth — a few pitches before General Lee gave up a single and surrendered for the night.

So — 24 first pitches, 18 takes, for 9 balls and 9 strikes. Or so my quick look analysis tells me. Sounds like a well executed (if excruciatingly torturous to watch) plan to raise the pitch count. Wonder if they’ll show such restraint tonight? CJ Wilson can be a bit wild.

    • alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on October 28, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Xoot…Yeah they should show some patience against Wilson. He’s the AL version of our own Jonathan Sanchez. If the G’s work the counts right ,he’ll be another starter that won’t last past the 5th.

    • James's avatar James said, on October 28, 2010 at 2:38 pm

It’s a plan that should work most of the time against any pitcher who isn’t consistently hitting and getting the calls at the margins of the strike zone, i.e., any pitcher who’s not throwing an exceptional game. How many times do you see a pitcher knocked out of the box with a low pitch count?

Bochy has one of the great non-answers of all time to the media. When asked about whether a certain player will play much or not, Bochy will sometimes say: “Yeah, he’s one of our guys.” When you think about it, that answer doesn’t mean anything. But it SOUNDS like it means something. Brilliant.

Couple of things from last night:
there were ridiculously long, noticeable breaks in between innings. It was annoying as hell……
Vlad looked AWFUL in right field, maybe the worst I’ve ever seen. ….
After Uribe hit his bomb I ran through the tunnel into a bathroom and screamed (and I have an absurdly loud voice): “Uribe Fuck Yeah!!!!!” like three times as loud as I could. There was a kid at the urinal who started crying, I felt sorta bad about that……

  32. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on October 28, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Careful, measured at-bats against that loogie tonight. His strikes to balls ratio is one of the worst in the game. Couple of the hackiers prolly won’t get the message, but yes, Franchez, Buster, Dragon and The Bat could have some pretty decent A.B.’s against him. I’ll even go out on a limb and predict that between Huff and Burrell there will be three BB’s. Get him outta there early and then go chomping on that DeRangers’ BP.

Hope Matt hasn’t had too much rest and that The Horse hasn’t gotten way deep into the oats. Expect some long fly balls off him and if he keeps it off the inner, middle of the plate those arc-jobs should keep our O.F.s busy shagging and snagging.

Vlady would have likely made the play on both of the drives to right center. Cruz barely had to move. (Those drives were every bit as “unlucky” as Kinsler’s ball, McCarver.) Vlady”s comical problems last night didn’t have anything to do with RF — the one ball he had to go back on, he made the play easily.

SHUT DOWN was in full effect. Whew. Keep the momentum in our dugout. I’ll say it again, that was HUGE.

    Nice going Mr. Horse.

When the going gets tough that ol’ plow Horse just keeps on a going right through the muck and the mire. Musta been a pretty disheartening inning for the DeRangers, particularly without their enforcers, Vlad and Bengie.

The Big Horse has a one length lead as he passes the 1/8 pole. I wouldn’t mind in the jock busted out the whip and extended the margin by another length or two. I don’t like photo finishes. But goddamn, the Big Horse is running his race. It’s a pleasure to watch him run.

That ol’ plowHorse just keeps plugging along. Already he’s covered over three-quarters of Texas. That’s a lotta territory.

And another tip of the cap to our trainer, Bruce Bochy. The move to put Ross in LF and insert Shitholtz in RF was golden. Our beloved “Bonehead” has made all the right moves.
