A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Giants Trade Cain for Fielder!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 16, 2010

Ok, that didn’t happen. But not being at the exact center of the Giants media world, I have to pump up the headlines now and again….Slow Giants news day. Rowand is still with the team. Please make a note of it…..

I will now take time to give a major shout out to my high school team, Paly High, who is playing in tomorrow night’s CIF D-1 Bowl Championship against Centennial-Corona. I expect us to get our asses handed to ourselves but it won’t diminish what has been a magical year for the Vikings….

Now, back to waiting on Renteria……

And I would love an update on Mark De Rosa at some point…..

……as well as a Panda lbs #…

If you all have not wrapped up your Christmas Shopping yet, Fathead have some good Giants stuff. My kid wanted to big Brian Wilson, but they have good World Series stuff including one with their on-field celebration, which I also ordered. 50% off the second item…

Another baseball great is gone from the scene. Bob Feller, the Iowa farm boy who rose to a Hall of Fame career with the Cleveland Indians, is dead at 92. Feller was baseball’s dominant pitcher in the era leading up to WWII and into the postwar years.

The Satchel Paige biography that came out last year has a section talking about Feller’s partnership with Satchel in barnstorming tours, with the Negro League players playing the MLB players. It helped all of them earn extra money, and showed that the Negro League players could compete with the MLB players. It can be seen as a stepping stone towards the integration of professional baseball.

Good topic from yesterday on payroll. I think with the depleted potential starting pitchers in the minors (Wheeler shoudl be #5 next year), I see us having Timmy and Matt being locked up long term then to cement the rotation.

Add in Bumgarner and Wheeler as the cheap guys for the next 3-4 years, it likely leaves JSanchez out if his salary escalates past $8 mill next year. So going forward, if Wheeler does make the rotation in 2012, we will just need a #4 type of pitcher starting in 2013. I assume Zito is going to be a $20 mill reliever in 2013.

If they can sign Matty and Tim to long 6 year deals, maybe their 2013 salaries can be kept to $17.5 mill each and BWilson will be in his last arb year in 2013. $12.5 mill sound sensible for BWilson in 2013?

So between Zito, Matt, Tim and BWilson, I have the base 2013 salary at $67.5.

No Huff or Rowand, will leave us about $50 mill in 2013 for the rest of the roster. So I think they make a run over the next two years with the older hitters and then begin in 2012 and 2013 with the transition to the young position players.

    2013 Positions:

    C – Posey
    1B – Panda/Gillaspie
    2B – Bond (still holding out hope)/Noonan
    SS – Crawford
    3B – Dominguez
    LF – Neal
    CF – Ford
    RF – McBryde

I will be willing to let them trot that lineup out there in 2013 and then determine who needs to stay and go. Hell with that young lineup, they may be able to afford to keep JSanchez there throuigh 2013…I think that is a bright future, but that roster could also be the next D-Backs roster when they had all this young talent and could not put it together (of course they have had crap bullpens and inconsistent starting pitching)…

Mike is actually an alien from the planet Tralfamador, a hidden moon orbiting Jupiter. When the signal is given, those with computers will all become absorbed by Orson, and we’ll become Pod people, and slowly infect our friends and neighbors.

Once the take over is completed, we will be packed off to Jupiter in beer kegs and sent back to Jupiter for slave labor.

good trade by Oakland today (for Willingham). For all the talk about the Nats “asking for the moon” for Willy, they really didn’t end up getting that much.

  14. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on December 16, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Wow! And that goes for both sides of this deal, which is pretty rare.Beane gets a huge boost to his offense while the Nats do something incredibly stupid just weeks after shelling out millions to get Werth.Trading Willingham basically makes the Werth deal useless.

Have to hand it to Beane. He’s not sitting on his ass this winter.Adding DeJesus,Matsui,Willingham,Harden,McCarthy. If he can some how still add Beltre, watch out for the A’s with that solid pitching staff, and added offense.

  15. swickman's avatar swickman said, on December 16, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Beane seems to be having a fairly decent offseason – one that should give A’s fans some hope. That A’s starting rotation was excellent to begin with. Add a little hitting and they’re a playoff contender. Now if only they could do something about that bullpen…

Culberson is far from a sleeper. He was a 1st rd pick, who along with Noonan was considered a can’t miss prospect. He really blossomed last yr at SJ and ended then hit a tidy .366 in the Fall League.

Also, I think the G’s are still high on Gillaspie (another 1st rd pick).

Dateline Colorado . . . File this under “Stranger than Fiction.”

So, I’m watching the local Denver news and the sports anchor reports that not only did the Rockies sign a catcher that batted .194 last year, but they apparently are considering Jose Canseco as a player on their roster. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!*

*You can try, but this shit doesn’t even make it to the internet.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on December 16, 2010 at 6:01 pm

Ted, not certain, but if Morales batted .194 last year, then that’s the dude. Sports anchor gave a cynical “build-up” to the Canseco story, so was paying attention to that.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on December 16, 2010 at 5:47 pm

Although Canseco has been begging someone to sign him. But they *did* sign Morales. That’s the catcher you refer to

  18. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on December 16, 2010 at 7:29 pm

the Niner’s offense is just cursed. Alex Smith makes a sweet ass, momentum changing play (I still think that was a TD) and it gets taken away and then they run a stupid ass, momentum changing play. And then they proceed to do jackshit on offense for the rest of the game…..

It’s too bad they are getting executed. To me, this is so much about coaching and planning. Denny, you are going to get your wish and I couldn’t be happier. I supported Sing’s hiring at the time. But, as I posted last Summer, when he embarrassed himself on KNBR with his “dysletktia” rant about Nate Davis, he was dead to me.
We have a lot of good players on this team and this isn’t all about Singletary. It’s about guys named McCloughlan, Parraggh, Balkke, etc….guys who’s names I can’t even spell. Jed York Jr needs to hire FOOTBALL PEOPLE AT THE TOP TO FIX THIS.

Rent has apparently been quoted in Colombia as feeling “disrespected” by the Giants’ $1M offer and is apparently inclined to stay home next season instead. Wow, so I guess he thinks Burrell must be a chump. I need to see this quote confirmed. Because, after 2 years and a ridiculous $18M+ contract with little production folllowed by yes, a standout WS, I feel I may say something very disrespectful about his response to Sabes’ offer…

  23. Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on December 17, 2010 at 6:55 am

At least RENT got an offer. That was very nice of Sabean. Anyway the Giants need to bring in younger guys.

  24. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on December 17, 2010 at 7:18 am

Sound-bite quotations are deceptive enough. When the comments quoted are originally in Spanish and made in a specific cultural context, google translator’s not really gonna help you much. And when the comments quoted are in the fractured English diction and syntax of a Latin American player who never needed to speak English at all until he got signed off the sandlot at age 17, you’d be wise to leave a lot of leeway for misinterpretation. The Giants owe Renteria $1/2MM in 2011, if he hever puts on his spikes. Maybe he prefers retirement to one more year at $1MM. Maybe his throwing arm hurts. Maybe the guy deserves some respect.

  25. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on December 17, 2010 at 9:45 am

Well, I don’t know if Rent was misquoted or mistranslated. John Shea has an article this morning on it, seems unlikely to me. If he even remotely said that, he’s got a real goodwill problem now in SF, which he had re-built so much by getting the WS MVP. I’ll go positive on this. This could mean he won’t be with the Giants next year…
