I guess he preferred no offer. How about a plaque under the stands next to the hot dog vendors?
I wonder how Edgar felt about the $18.5 million he got from the Giants in 2009-2010? Which included him making $9 million to play 72 games this year?
Remember, Edgar?
Your World Series was epic. Brilliant. But the Giants did right by you. You have no reason to complain.
Well, this will get the “Rent-a-Wreck” crew going again. This offer has been out there for awhile and it’s been reported that he was leaning toward accepting it. Now this.I think I’ll wait a bit and see if there’s more ( or less) to it..
I’m hoping he was misquoted or something was lost in translation. Otherwise, adios Rent. Thanks for the postseason performance, but you were lucky to even be on the 25 man roster after the dismal two seasons you produced.
“you were lucky to even be on the 25 man roster after the dismal two seasons you produced.”‘ I’d say it’s the team that was lucky. I knew this would ferret out the haters… He was injured.Under the circumstances, he played pretty well. And you only need ask his teammates about his value.
Like I said, I hope he was misquoted and could be brought back, but after only 72 games this year, $1M is a fair offer. If not, he should sign with any of the number of teams banging down his door. Don’t get me wrong, he did a nice job in the postseason and his WS game 6 homer was the championship clincher, but his body of work over the last two years doesn’t warrant more than 1 year at $1M.
Two thoughts. First, twin’s right. You can’t criticize someone for being injured. That being said, Renteria’s propensity, or if that’s not a fair word, history for getting injured doesn’t warrant another huge payday. Sure, he was the World Series MVP. Deservedly so. But does anyone here believe the Giants could not have won the World Series without him? I don’t find the Giants offer an insult. Too bad this day and age these things get aired out in public ad nauseum. If this was behind the doors, Renteria could have accepted or retired with dignity. Now, based on one’s personal perspective, everyone looks like an asshole
Or “prone.”
A couple of days ago people here were calibrating whether this SF Giants WS MVP had a legit shot at the HOF. Now you’re willing to trash the guy because of an off-season comment made while he’s considering the end of his career. The context of the comment is unclear, too, as I pointed out on the last thread. Apparently Renteria made the comment in some situation in Colombia. ESPN Desportes broke the “story,” but I haven’t seen anything in Spanish, and who the fuck knows what questions he might have been responding to. Back off. The guy is the reigning SF Giants WS MVP and we all know he deserved that award.
I’ll go positive on Rent. This could mean he and his destined-for-the-DL body won’t be with the Giants next year…
I haven’t looked at the last thread, so I don’t know who’s bashing Rent. As I said, I hope he was misinturpreted. Knowone can blame him for being injured, but that doesn’t mean he should get a big payday when he couldn’t play half the season, and when he did, he was average at best. That’s why he was Uribe’s backup and not the other way around. $1M to be a backup is a good deal. Take it or go elsewhere, but he shouldn’t feel disrespected, if in fact he does.
That should be no one. I think the codine kicked in.
“But does anyone here believe the Giants could not have won the World Series without him?” Yeah, we alll knew Rowand would have come through..
It’s fish for dinner in Room B tonight, Ted…
Oh. I see. So Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Bumgarner, Wilson…they were just spectators
And what’s the fish?
Uh, he drove in the only runs in game 5. You’re confused- there were others that were indispensible, that does not negate that it’s true that they very well might have lost the series without him.
It’s cod, BTW.
Ooh cod. Love it. And if they lost game 5, they still had 2 games to go
At home
As usual, you should have left it at “Twin’s right”…
You’re right again
If Rent hadn’t made the postseason roster, who’s to say that another player wouldn’t have come up big in the WS? Maybe they wouldn’t have won it in 5, maybe it would have taken 6 or 7, but the Giants pitching made them the better team, not Rent.
The Giants are world champions and that couldn’t have happened if they hadn’t barely eeked out the Padres in the regular season… a season in which Rent contributed far less than Burrell did in just half a season. Burrell accepted the $1M contract happily.
Trying to say that the WS MVP was not critical to winning is the dumbest crock of shit in a long time here, maybe since Gringo Fuck..
Who said he wasn’t critical? Did you read my post? I *said* he deserved the MVP. My post was more to the fact that these salary negotiations being aired in public make everyone out to look bad. The *closest* thing I said that could even be interpreted as criticizing Renteria was that he didn’t single handedly win the World Series. That’s not an insult. It’s an insult to the whole team to say he did.
I figured this thread would get some of you goin’. Renteria won the WS for us. For that, he was UNDERPAID for his time here. . For that, I will always be grateful and respect his time with SF. But if what he said is true, he can go fuck himself from here on out…
If Rent was not in the WS lineup the Giants would have won it anyway because they had the best pitching, period. Rent was the hero, and therefore deserving of the MVP, but he was not critical.
Since there’s no way to prove or disprove that, what’s yer point?
You can guarantee that Rowand would have won game 5?
Just responding to Twin’s assumption that Rent was critical. Really, I think it’s hard to argue that anything was critical other than the pitching staff’s performance.
Not critical? What a crock. He also played superbly in the field. Pablo at 3rd might have resulted in a different outcome.
Might or might not, but it was the piutching that was critical, not Renteria.
3bagger, banking on Rowand would be a little sketchy at best. Leave well enough alone. Burrell and Edgar are 2 different people. Different situations. Different outcomes.
Rent shouldn’t be insulted as the Giants gave him a huge contract in 09. And he missed, what, 150 games in 2 years?
Vaya con dios, Edgar. Take a walk around Columbia and see how many of your countrymen would be insulted to play a game for $1 million.
Who’s banking on Rowand? I’m just saying the Giants would have wone the World Series with, or without, Rent’s game 5 heroics. I give him all the props and appreciation in the world for those heroics and think he deserved the MVP, but nothing more than $1M to play next year.
Renteria won the ws for the giants. Period. But if he said what is reported he can go fuck himself
I tend to agree with an earlier post….would he have more insulted with no offer from the G’s….?
Also this….
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 17 at 12:24pm CST]
The Giants and Cubs discussed a trade that would have sent Kosuke Fukudome to San Francisco for Aaron Rowand, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (all Twitter links). The bad contract swap appears to be a “long shot,” however. If they can’t trade Rowand, the Giants may listen to offers for Nate Schierholtz, according to Crasnick.
“Who’s banking on Rowand? I’m just saying the Giants would have won the World Series with, or without, Rent’s game 5 heroics”.. totally unsupportable claptrap…
One can CLAIM that Zito would have stepped up if Linecum was injured. It has as much validity as the nonsense that Renteria was not critical. Claiming that the series MVP was not critical to the win is really realy dumb, pal.
They give the MVP to the player considered the most critical – that wasn’t Lincecum or Cain or Posey or Wilson- it was Renteria.
and there wasn’t really even a question about it, he won by a landslide….
As it was with Ross in the NLCS.
Mention Renteria and 3Bagger is on it like one of Vick’s dogs…
If you think it’s bad here, you should take a look at the Splash
Well all this Rent bs. first off saying he wasn’t critical is bullshit. that is like saying I wish the Giants had lost game 5 so they could have won it at home!! There is no telling what the out come would have been. He was a hell of a player for the Giants and deserved all the attention he got. But at 34 years old he is not worth more than 1 and 1!! In my Opinion!!
If Posey hit that HR he’d be the fucking mayor by now.. the reaction is hardly surprising, it will be interesting how it plays out. Coud get the usual: misquoted, out of context, yada yada. And he signs for 1.5…
Does Rent’s refusal and indignation of the Giant’s $1M contract somehow improve Mike Singletary’s coaching and Alex Smith’s playing ability?
Didn’t think so. I could give a rat’s ass. They can all go royally fuck themselves.
With apologies to Motley Crue….
“Rent don’t go away mad, Rent just go away.”
SRO in Room B tonight.
That’s only because Singletary, Alex, Mike Johnson, Greg Manusky and every other no good cocksucker in red and gold have taken their rightful place.
One fucking pass to Vernon Davis? And that came when the shit was already decided. Those stoopid fucks can’t figure out and design a way(s) to get the ball into his hands via an isolation, end-around, reverse, or any other conceivable play? Fucking morons.
And if Alex had any hair on his sack he coulda and shoulda audibled outta that 4th and goal and ran the naked bootleg. But like the good little soldier he is, he took the orders from Singletary and ran the play that everyone knew was coming. Alex sure wasn’t the problem last night, but as always, he wasn’t the right answer either. That entire coaching staff and players stinks to high heaven. And King Singletary is wearing the coveted crown of shit.
C’mon Twin. You know how much I can’t stand Rent. I had to show a ton of restraint to come up with that post.
Can the cod be grilled with perhaps some cajun spices? I’m not a big fan of breaded and fried fish. Maybe some steamed veggies on the side????
My reaction to the thing was kind of different. I just thought it might be part of the process of negotiation, to see if he could get a better offer from the Giants. Maybe he wants another two-year deal, or something.
A two-year deal for Renteria? That’s pretty goddamn funny. Wanna hear something even funnier? If you HAD to give one a two-year deal, who would you choose?
A) Renteria
B) Mike Singletary
C) Alex Smith
The fact that Renteria gets 100% of the vote is quite telling on the other two options.
Little upset about yesterday’s game are we?
Did you read today’s paper? When asked why the Niner’s most dangerous vertical threat, Vernon Davis, went unused, Singletary said he’ll have to watch the film to decide.
I don’t even know what that means. Decide what? After the fact?
What’s the word for peeved multiplied 100X?
That word won’t even get’cha in the same zip code to how I feel.
Man, tolbert is on knbr right now calling renteria “Jesse James” and has used the word “stole” about 6 times in 2 mins referring to renteria’s career with the giants. That’s awful…
Heard it myself, Flav. Tommy T. definitely went overboard with his comments. The man won us a goddamn WS for Christ sakes. In my book that gives you right to say anything you goddamn well please.
Doesn’t like our offer? So what, he won us the goddamn WS.
Says it’s an insult? So what, he won us the goddamn WS.
Feels disrespected? So what, he won us the goddamn WS.
Renteria and the Giants can do whatever the hell the want and think’s best for the both he and the club and it’ll be OK in my book. That even includes giving him a two-year deal. Just as long as his contract stipulates that I never have to look at Mike Singletary or Alex Smith ever again.
When Mike Singletary finally get’s fired, his first words will be” I’ll have to look at the film” before i comment on my firing.
You know what Fuck Renteria! It’s not like he has any other offers. The Marlins were his supposed only other one.And now there saying no way.It was all in his mind, thinking other teams were interested in him.Giants aren’t gonna bid against themselves this time
I can’t understand the “stole money” thing. HIs fuckin’ body wasn’t working, that’s hardly his fault. He played hard when his body allowed him to play. His teammates loved him. Stole money? Jesse James? Tolbert should be suspended for those comments……
I dug into the Baranquilla archives and found the original article, in Spanish, that reported what Renteria said. It wasn’t, “please don’t spend money on a celebration for me, but take that money and use it for flood victiim relief.” No. If my translation is correct, he said, “that puny celebration you’ve planned shows no respect. It will disrespect me. You might as well give the money to flood victims. I will celebrate with my own money.”
I tell you, you just can’t trust those journalists. Deadline pressure used to cause enough bad reporting; now that they’re all afraid of losing their jobs, they’ll do anything to scare up some interest in their work. I don’t believe a fucking thing they say.
¿Que?
So Dennis, if the NFL network crew comments helped sway Jed’s decision to keep Sing for another year, what are you going to do??
Let’s just say that I’d make the 11:00 news and leave it at that.
Color Mychael Urban a non-Renteria fan. I think he and Tolbert might be neighbors.
http://tinyurl.com/2fdgbsz
Of all the people posting anti-Renteria stuff on blogs right now, how many of them were cheering like crazy when he was, dramatically, the final Giant player introduced in front of City Hall on Nov. 3? I really would like to think there’s no overlap at all. I really would. WS MVP. Completeley deserved. Holy shit. The guy deserves huge slack, leeway, whatever you want to call it.
When I first heard it my reaction was that one million was a bit low – maybe there negotiating?
It is fact that contracts are as much for past peformance as future- and certinly hitting the biggest HR in SF Giants history merits some salary consideration. So while anything approaching his previous deal was out of the question, one million IS low. Saying “well, they can get a good back up for a million” is not relevant- they can’t get a 5 time All -Star, 2 time Gold Glove, World Series MVP for that…it WAS an insult, no offer at all was better..
I don’t know if it was an insult. Maybe. I suppose the Giants could have been less public with the terms of the offer. If Renteria is insulted, that’s ok with me, and I don’t have a problem with him saying he’s insulted. Still, I’m not sure we’re hearing the full story. The offer to Renteria is the only public thing going on right now with the World Champs, so it has turned into a temporary imbroglio in the news. Let “Mr. T” worry about it.
Fuck that. Paying for what’s on the back of a guys baseball card is lazy gming. The giants aren’t paying for what he’s done, good for them
I thought the Urban article was sort of pandering. He knows Renteria’s salary vs. performance was a sore spot among a lot of Giants fans. And coming from URBAN of all people, the biggest Zito apologist in the Bay Area.
2.5 is about right.
John Shea over on the splash has been pumping this story. His latest update is more of the same provocative bs — a few facts, though. He quotes Bobby Evans on the latest news from Renteria’s agent (who says Rent and the Giants are all good). Doesn’t this back and forth in the news sound a lot like the stuff that happened with Benji over contract extensions, offers, etc.? Who’s leaking what, and who’s responding to it?
You know, after thinking about this, I’m not really that bothered by Renteria choosing to feel disrespected by the offer. I think he could have kept his feelings about it quiet, if he didn’t like the offer just reject it or have your agent counter them. I’m surprised though, that a guy who comes from such a poor country would openly suggest that a 1 million dollar offer is “disrespectful”.
and really, 1 million is just not that much dough when it comes to guys with his service time. He made 9 million last year. How many of you would be willing to take an 89% pay cut in 2011?
He’s obviously earned the right to say “fuck it” I don’t want to play baseball for that rate. I just think he could have kept his feelings about the offer private.
“The 2-0, is hit high in the air to left-center field. Back is Murphy on the run…3-run, home run, Renteria.”
I have two words for Edgar at this moment; “Merry Christmas.”
That of course was followed right after “thank you.”
He should have come on this blog and complained. It would have been a hoot. Anyway he’s not ready for a backup role. Some guys can adjust to it and others cannot.
I know politics is a no-no, but I couldn’t let this one slide. The National Organization for Women is putting up a stink with Hooters restaurant. They’re asking police to investigate the Hooters located in San Bruno in the Tanforan mall. NOW contests that Hooters exposes children to a sexually charged environment in a salacious atmosphere. NOW is concerned for the safety and well-being of children who go to the restaurant.
I can’t speak about the safety, but well-being? Surely you can’t be serious. I thought that was why you went there in the first place — to get well, and improve your well-being. So the kid’s are joining the party a little early, they’re supervised. Junior might of been hungry, had a hankering for some wings. Pop said, “no problem son, we’ll pop into Hooters and get’cha some chicken wings.” “Catch the ballgame.” Sounds like some great father-son bonding if ya ask me.
So NOW wants to squelch the maturation process between a father and son. Excuse me, could be father-daughter. Silly of me to assume it’s just boys. Maybe little Suzie was hungry for some hot wings and wanted to catch the Giants game on the big screen. Hell, Hooters should add a few of those Skee-Ball games and put those suckers at Chuck E. Cheese outta business.
google the southwest airlines hotpants lawsuits. BFOQ. a wait person serving a child doesn’t have to be female and have nice tits and a tight ass. simple stuff.
Ha! That’s a hoot [bad pun firmly intended], xoot. I hadn’t seen that 1972 hot pants ad before. I’m sure you’re probably well aware of the ironic situation in ’07 where Kyla Ebbert, a waitress at Hooters was asked to leave a SW plane in SD for her attire being too revealing. She eventually was let back on after a fuss and then later posed for Playboy to stick it to ’em.
Kyla Ebbert; http://tinyurl.com/2g25vkr
uh huh. Let’s try again. The issue isn’t whether women have the right to be hot. We all agree. They do. And it isn’t whether hot women can be waitresses. They can. Even if they’re serving food to little kids. So what is the issue? Can you fucking figure it out?
I have to say- Dave Fleming does pretty good job at baseball, but his basketball is better than his baseball. He’s doing the Arizona St./Nevada game tonight, and he’s a first-rate basketball play-by-play guy. I’m not sure his baseball will ever be what I’d call first-rate. Basketball suits him better, because in baseball you have to be more of an anecdote person, and that’s just not his strength. In basketball, they give you a color analyst to work with, and Dave is real good at playing off the analyst’s stuff.
End of first 1/4: 2-0 Paly. Let’s go VIKINGS! Channel 692 for you DirectTV guys….
2-0 Paly after the first? Sounds like Timmy is pitching and Buster hit a 2-run shot. Either that or Mike Singletary is coaching both sides.
Oh wait, that’s Steve Bono’s kid playing for your team, I forgot. I watched him in the semi-final game, looked pretty good.
TD Bono! Ooh, that poor WR turned his ankle and/or leg sumthin’ bad. Hope he’s OK.
Some more awards were handed out, not sure if this was mentioned. B-Wheezy, Rapunzel, Jesus, Sabes, and “Blockhead” all won Gibbys. I have to be honest, I’ve never heard of the “Gibbys” before. I hope they’re nothing like the Razzies. I think Sly Stone has the distinct “honor” of the most Razzie noms and wins. But I think old Sly got jobbed on one award. Getting the worst actor award for “Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot” was just plain wrong.
Sly and the family Stone?
Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin
Game one of the WS is on, speaking off Fleming.
Bottom of the 4th . . . 2-2
“Bottom of the 4th . . . 2-2”
What a coincidence, same as first time.
Double by Sanchez! Giants take the lead . . .
Beats watching Niner highlights.
I tell ya, it’s a lot more fun hearing this through the voices of Kruk and Kuiper . . .
Paly 15. Centennial 0 at half. Centennial averages 54 PTs a gm. Vikings!!!!
I have to be honest. Replay of Game 1, Flav’s HS Championship game with Steve Bono’s kid, quarters running at Los Alamitos — I’ve shunned them all. The goddamn “Wizard of Oz” is on TNT. I can’t pass up Dorothy. I just can’t.
I’ve got a big handicapping tourney for tomorrow at Hollywood and I’ve neglected my studies in favor of Professor Marvel, Glinda, countless Munchkins and the Lollipop Guild. Color me a sap.
Somebody mentioned Urban’s column on Rent’s ill advised statement. Normally, I think Urban is more than a bit of a tool. But, I think he’s coming around. No doubt, he wrote the column with some stirring of the pot in mind. But, I think he’s got it mostly right on this one…
I would compare the Giants experience with Renteria to paying $2 million for a house and then finding out it’s riddled with termites, has a cracked slab, mold everywhere, and a meth lab next door. You finally make the decision to sell the place at a huge loss and as your jamming the “short sale” sign into the front yard, oil comes gushing out of the ground ala The Beverly Hillbillies and you end up making a huge profit.
You thank your lucky stars that it all worked out in the end, but you still walk away from the place and never look back.
Anyone who pays two mil for a house with a slab doesn’t deserve a break.
Paly…
