A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Renteria—- I’m over it.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 18, 2010

Maybe it was a day to think about it or maybe it was reading the STUPID shit posted at The Splash and listening to Idiot Tolbert on KNBR, but I’m totally over Renteria being “disrespected” or whatever that was. The guy can play/say/do whatever and wherever he wants to next year. He won us a World Series. Pay him 20 million to sit at home with his kids in 2011. What do I care? It’s not my money and I’m still B-A-S-K-I-N-G.

Speaking of basking….

I still live in the town I grew up in. Not sure if that makes this more or less special. But….Congratulations to the STATE CHAMPIONS: Paly High.

Happy Birthday, Pawlie. And congrats on winning Twin’s computer. I think you won. Or is Flav still protesting the Rowand cutoff date? The only cutoff Rowand needs is reached by taking the San Diego Freeway followed by the Ventura Freeway till you get to the Slauson Cutoff. Art Fern will instruct you next.

Twin said it best after Rent’s HR: $18 million, 56 years. In the end, he was worth every dollar.

It’s too bad these things have to end sourly, if that’s how it turns out. But such silliness shall pass. There isn’t anything that can take away from Rent’s enormous contribution to our beloved Giants winning the World Series.

Happy B-Day, Pawlie! I might have to add that sweatshirt to the X-mas swag list.

Happy B’day Pawlie, Rent isn’t the first player to feel disrespect from a team he helped get to the World Series, Super Bowl, whatever. What guys like him don’t want to admit is that they are on the down side of their carreer and they aren’t worth what they want. There egos won’t let them admit it. If he was really all that valuable a team would be offering him something more. Joe Montana didn’t want to admit his time was done, he went to KC, yes I know he took them to the playoffs, but no SB there. and God I hate saying this, but Jerry Rice went to the Raiders. Saying that tastes like vinegar!! Jerry just couldn’t give up Football. So Renteria just needs to suck it up and accept what is offered or move on.

That’s the thing- fans want the athletes’ careers to end gracefully, but they rarely do. There’s usually some bad feelings that fade away in time. Ronnie Lott does commentary on KNBR. His love of the 49ers shines on through. When he was forced to leave the Niners as a player, his feelings at the time were much different.

I still say that if any of you (who work) were looking at an 89% paycut in 2011 you would be underwhelmed with the prospect of working……

Not if I should be retired…

  8. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on December 18, 2010 at 11:12 am

Urban’s whole manufactured thing about Renteria’s “price to stay with his family,” was one of the stupider straw-man arguments I’ve ever read. ANY person who is thinking of possibly retiring has to make those kinds of decisions. Heck, any person thinking of taking a second job, or working lots of overtime has to make those decisions. Baseball players make HUGE money, but it does have to be said there is a big chunk of the year when they are away from their families. They’re not there when their own kids are playing little league.
Btw- how often do you ever see ‘they’re, there, and their in the same sentence? That was something, eh?

  9. Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on December 18, 2010 at 11:20 am

First, Rent is a Post Season stud. And, I’m not just talking about the Giants. That alone is worth a million bucks, just to be available for the play offs. Second, he’s worth a couple extra million just to watch Cody the Clown’s batting stance. You all remember the OTHER MVP changed his stance (foot I think) after Rent said something about it. So to me he’s worth 3 mil for those two things alone.
Offer 3 mil and a coaching job after (IMO, the dude should be offered a job for life), fuck the splash, get er done.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on December 18, 2010 at 11:33 am

If they sign Rent for a year, he’s going to end up coaching anyway, but during the season while he’s on the DL…

  11. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on December 18, 2010 at 11:35 am

Flav, most here didn’t make 18 mill over two years, If he has invested wisely over his baseball carreer an 89% cut should not be a problem.

    AMD Phenom II X6 Six-Core Processor 1055T (2.8GHz) AM3

    8 GB DDR3 Memory

This contest will end when pitchers and catchers report. Or rather: when Pablo reports. What will he weigh? Since we don’t know who will report his weight, I will select the first credible one( Shea, Henry, Baggs, like that)

Seriously, I don’t care that the guy feels disrespected and is running his mouth a bit. I just feel like the Giants would be better off with Burriss being the utility guy. On top of my other criticisms of Rent, he doesn’t exactly strike me as a classic utility infielder. Has he ever played so much as a half of an inning at any other position for the Giants? That tells me he either can’t play second or third very well or he feels it’s beneath him to play anywhere but short.
Neither scenario bodes well for what the Giants need on their roster.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on December 19, 2010 at 11:10 am

Kevin Lynch had a pretty gloomy 49er blog post over at SFGate. He believes the “playoff chances” thing is actually an extra burden on the Niners. Usually a 5-9 team is ready to pack up the trucks and get out of Dodge. The Niners want to get ready to end their miserable season, but they still have reporters sticking microphones in their faces, asking about the Niners “playoff chances.”
None of them want to talk to reporters. They’re all imitating Singletary now.

I think Soph originally wanted to be liked, but got angry when everyone blasted the fake female college student act out of the water. He decided to take on TF and prove TF wrong about baseball, but Soph hilariously picked the season the GIANTS WON THE WORLD SERIES to do it. That’s quite funny, actually. It only made Soph more angry and surly and sullen and desperate. He may be tired of being that persona.

So, while writing Christmas cards, I watched game 6 of the NLCS, the game I mostly missed because I was watching my daughter in the ballet, in Philly. Pretty darned good thing to do on a December afternoon. What a game. It looked as if we might get blasted away in the first inning. And what a job by Affeldt! And Werth just missed a three-run HR and made a sensational catch. I think the tension in real time must’ve been excruciating. I just marvel all the more we did it. It is truly amazing. Back to the game. 5th inning.

Jon Miller’s call on Uribe’s homer in that game 6 was a classic (full of rising hope and, ultimately, triumph). So was Joe Buck’s (full of disbelief and, ultimately, disappointment). The ‘Niners going beyond 16 games this year is not really “making the playoffs”. It means by circumstance, they got a 17th game tacked onto their regular season; the opportunity to go 5-12, instead of 5-11.

Only thing worse is the Denver media living in the past and doing the same with Elway.

No one that has come around yet (maybe in the future) compares with Montana and what he accomplished while with the Niners and Chiefs. That’s my opinion and I’m stickin’ to it 🙂

I recall some nasty posts about Renteria’s lack of playing time, loss of range, etc., that surely asserted he wasn’t working hard. His injuries (and his efforts to play through them, when he could) didn’t exist to such posters.

Bochy’s decision to put Uribe and Renteria on the left side of the IF for the playoffs still impresses me. I remember thinking, christ, which one will break down first? And then I watched with ever increasing respect and delight as they made play after play after play. Not to mention the key hits, of course. 😉

Here’s what’s strange: it was reported that Renteria’s biceps totally tore through [close to the exact phrase] before or during the NLDS, in addition to another injury he was said to have (shoulder?). It was even oddly reported that the injury aggravation somehow made him have less pain, and he played better. What I don’t understand is, why no update on this? Will there be surgery? It magically got better? I make or infer no accusations in asking this. I just want to know.

Pawlie, when I fell off a mountain in Canada last year and had rotator cuff and bicep rupture surgery, the surgeons only did the bicep because they were already doing open surgery on my shoulder, i.e., many surgeons view it as cosmetic surgery. The bicep muscle is for show and little else. Elway won two Super Bowls AFTER it was torn and yes, his arm felt beltter after the bicep long tendon dis-attached itself from the shoulder.

Giants: Lineup shakeup for Game 3
        Susan Slusser, Chronicle Staff Writer
        Tuesday, October 19, 2010

“… though Renteria is also injured, with a left biceps muscle that has torn completely through. Strangely, Renteria said, the injury has felt much better since the muscle tore all the way on a swing during Game 2 of the Division Series; it bothered him more when it was merely a strain.

“It feels good,” he said. “No pain right now.”

Asked about the possibility of starting today against Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels, Renteria said, “I’m ready, I’m ready. I have to show I can still play.”

So how serious is Renteria’s injury? And is it not a legit factor in any negotiation over contracts?

I heard many KNBR references to Rent’s bicep. And I agree, weird that it hasn’t even been brought up. Was it just tendinitis or was it a partial tear?
I don’t mind CC using full names. I absolutely mind broadcasters saying “football” all the time.

BTW, if I was worried about a player recovering from a physical problem in time to play in 2011 that’s the reason I offer him the straight million. Although it’s a trip that Rent doesn’t address this ever he just wants to talk about disrespect……

They can’t be too concerned- with health issues for Sanchez, DeRosa, Pablo’s conditionng, Rent could still be the everyday SS.

They’re not deep enough or set enough in the infield to be low balling people..

Zumie—I love your takes on announcers. I like Collinsworth, but I hadn’t picked up on the full name habit—-good call.

I can’t remember anyone specifically calling Rent lazy. At the same time, I also can’t remember anyone ever noting how hard the guy plays.

Why are you questioning this? Now you’ve seen a few. I’m not going to spend an hour getting a hundred more. I’m benchmarking the graphics on the gamer.
“Edgar Renteria. I can’t believe this guy hits a home run in the World Series! Where is the justice in that? He was so fat (still is), lazy (ask anybody) and disinterested with the Tigers. My then 6 year old called him “the fat guy”..

” I won’t root for Renteria because he is a bad, lazy player who won’t lay out for balls and messes up routine plays”

“Edgar”the lazy” Renteria is a bust and can’t field his position. This guy would be playing in Japan where he would still be a mediocre player”

Does Renteria need surgery? Or doesn’t he?
    REVRIT!!!
