Best Record in ST, But Still Finding Things to Complain About

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 11, 2011

Being 11-4 isn’t anything to complain about. Or care about. There are a few minor disappointments so far this Spring:

1) Brandon Belt is showing us why he’s going to start the year in Fresno. Hitting .250 with a .323 OBP is just not good.

2) Marc Kroon isn’t getting much of a look. He’s nearly the career saves leader in Japan and he throws close to 100 mph. He’s only pitched 3 innings so far this Spring, I was hoping to see more of him.

3) Rowand is hitting .111 and is hurt. The .111 isn’t much of a shocker but the fact that he can’t even make it onto the field is a disappointment. Sabean can’t “Pittsburgh” anyone with Rowand unable to even play.

4) We are stuck with another year of El Presidente. Stewart is doing nothing, as expected. I still don’t understand why we don’t have a credible back up for our best hitter/player….

Kansas City has the best record in the AL right now, by the way……

  2. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on March 11, 2011 at 8:28 am

Belt will indeed start in Fresno if he hits as he has-that was not the question, though. Be aware of that..
As to Kroon, there isn’t a spot for him, he’ll probably open in Fresno and he or Edlefson would be the first recall in case of injury…
Don’t understand the love affair with Vera’s boy, either. There were a shitload of FA catchers available this winter.
They need to make room for Ford whether he hits or not. He’s probably the fastest player in the game and he’s a GOOD baserunner. He’ll win several games on the bases late. If that means goodbye to Nate, so be it.

  3. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2011 at 9:15 am

I totally see the value of Ford over Nate and I hope the team sees the same thing.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 11, 2011 at 10:49 am

I take Nate over Ford, easily. Ford needs at least another 1/2 year in the minors, if not a whole season. His D is fine, he needs to work on how to use his speed to get on base consistently…

I know we rag on the Dodgers a lot, but seriously….did you all see the size of that “crowd” at the Dodger game yesterday, on the MLB network broadcast? There was hardly anyone there. Wow. That says a lot of about Dodger fan interest in the Dodgers these days.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on March 11, 2011 at 9:47 am

The camera would pan into the home “crowd”, and the Dodger broadcasters would get real quiet. What could they say? It was a total embarrassment.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on March 11, 2011 at 9:49 am

by contrast, as Kuip pointed out on the radio this morning, yesterday’s crowd at the Reds ST park contained so many Giants fans they were able to stop the game with their standing O when Renteria came to the plate. He tipped his cap, apparently. Now there’s a bunch of happy fans!

  7. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on March 11, 2011 at 9:47 am

I’m on board with no Nate, yes Ford. I’ll bet Darren’s late inning D will be as valuable as Nate’s has been, and the kid is a holy terror on the base paths.

Never mind, I just googled and found an obscure reference to some sort of minor groin injury a few days ago. Was he not riding the bike this past winter? Wasn’t that the thing that was going to turn him around last ST? This guy has got to go. At any price, just get it done. He’s hitting a buck something, then get’s injured so itz even more difficult to trade him? I’d put him on the sixty day DL to start the season and then make him play a rehab stint in Fresno, then trade his ass in June to some obscure team for a popsicle stick after he hits about .200 there. Just be done with this dude…

And BTW, why no “inside source” management rant leaked against the Gamer so far in ST? Zito gets a broadside, but the Gamer gets a pass? Since he signed, he’s given as poor production as Zito, maybe worse, for the money spent…

Our Cactus League ERA is 2.80? That’s downright ridiculously unfathomable. You just don’t see those kind of numbers in March. Might even be too good for our own sake. Reminds me of when the Niners go 4-0 in the preseason. That never seems to bode well. So for the good of the team in the regular season, here’s to seeing our spring ERA take an upward tick.

  15. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on March 11, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Dennis, never ever jinks your team by suggesting what their win/loss/ERA/strikeouts etc be for ST. right now it appears that they just picked up where they left off on Nov 1. as long as they peak in mid Sept I am fine with everything that leads up to that. 162 games is a lot of games.

The front harbor always has had a lot of nice sailboats. The chiming sound of stays smacking masts made windy nights entertaining. A friend of mine launched at SC harbor a 28 foot sloop he built. (He was painter; his wife a teacher in Watsonville.) We sailed the boat to Vancouver the following May. Nobody mistook us for rich-guy yachtsmen.

Speaking of yachts I saw this yesterday while waiting at the dentist:

The son of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea’s president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema planned to build one of the world’s most expensive yachts. The superyacht would have cost 288 million euros which is approximatly 10 times what the government spends on health, education and welfare.
Teodorin earns 5,000 euros a month as a government minister, but “despite this he owns a 35 million dollar mansion in Malibu as well as a gulf stream jet”, said one observer. “According to my very rough calculations it would take him over 4,000 years to pay for this yacht with his official salary.”
Average income is €2500 and unemployment is around 30%
It’s good to be (son of) the king.

    1. Congrats on turning “Pittsburgh” into a verb, Magnus. They needed that.

    2. Although y’all might roll your eyes at this, I suggest the ST record means something; not everything, but something. Losing is a habit. So is winning. And winning is better, as we all baskingly know. No one wants to go out there and lose. They simply don’t. Also, you can look this up, but I am pretty certain that traditionally [say, since the 1970s] the Giants have to have a winning spring to have a good year; not necessarily a stellar ST but .500 or above. They seem to need that. I like winning, even in ST.

Pawlie, I remember Dusty Baker saying something like that near the end of one spring training, not sure which year that was; the team was losing more than winning that spring, and someone asked Baker if he was concerned. He said no, win-loss record in ST means nothing, but he also said he always wants to see the team “get into the habit of winning” in the last couple weeks of ST heading into the season. One thing that seems to make this particular Giants team special is that they do truly seem to understand how to enjoy winning. I watched some of the World Series videos on YouTube again last night (after Kevin posted that “27 last outs” link)… this is truly a fun team.

The whole thing started with description of how close the players are to the stands in ST. Krukow’s renditions were like folk opera. But he gets these innalectchul notiions — the arm slot, of course, and now, the dead-arm time in ST. He becomes determined to prove his hypotheses. Lincecum threw 94 mph FBs in the first inning, but 91 in the 4th. His arm’s not dead, it’s just not at full strength yet. Everything’s fine.
