Checking Out the Spring Training Stats
16 days to go till it matters…….
Giants still have a lot of guys batting over .300. Of course, when one of them is No Whitey Stewart who is currently toting around an OPS of .897, you take these numbers lightly. Vogelsong has a sparkling 2.13 ERA but he’s walked 7 in 12.2 innings pitched. Pablo and Huff lead the team with 3 bombs a piece. Lots of other guys are doing things too, you can check out all their stats here:
Fascinating body of stats so far. Amazing part is that there are several guys with OPS in the .900 to 1.000 range. Huff the Magic Dragon is having him one helluva spring and so is Buster. Surprise. Surprise. Great thing is that they have been picking it up all over the lineup. One problem there showed up with the game-winning RBI last night by Travis. He’s had a generally draggy spring, but that hit demonstrated once again that he can be tough in clutch late-game situations.
Why the problem? For one thing Darren Ford has had a good spring, particularly in the SB department. He’s a weapon. Travis may be the player on the bubble the most, with Nate not far behind. Rowand is the one most agree should go, but who wants him? Either of the prior two have some trade value. So the Giants brass have some decisions to make over the next two weeks.
Nothing really crazy for ST, actually. They’re hitting .269, 17th in MLB.Team ERA is 4th. They’re on track with how they performed in the 2010 regular season, taking into account the “desert factor”. Look for an offense that will rank among the leaders in HRs but still struggle putting runners on.
And, my goodness, has Kawakami ever been chirpier? Sabean sounding like Belt could open with the big club, BTW
http://tinyurl.com/4uuksj9
kind of out of character for this guy, agreed. so my question is who does this impact the most if Belt starts at 1B? Would Burrell only play vs. LHP (assuming Belt sits and Huff is at 1B)? Now how many do you keep out of Travis/Nate/Rowand? If MDR is now strictly a back up IF, where/when does he get in?
Kawakami was giddy because Sabean took his call.
First game is on my birthday, I should go to LA since March 31 is a holiday and I am making it a 4 day weekend. But I will have a better view on MLB TV. I still think that the Players just look more relaxed this year. I hope it carries over into the regular season. I know it is asking too much but I hope the bandwagon fan understands it is a long season and not to freak out over a loosing streak. Last year was fun posting shit about taking a step away from the ledge and all but we know the season is long. I know that TF is not doing computers but is everyone going to give there wins and losses for the season?
ST……let it be over…..please!
Twin not giving computers? I’m waiting for FED EX to drop off something. I don’t really care as long it’s not a dead rat. A live one is okay.
I may do another, depends on how OT goes. I need more from my right hand.
Sabean is just blowing wind up Kawakami’s ass. Bringing him up by May seems quite possible. Starting the year at 1st base? He can talk about it but he won’t do it….
May depend on how he fares the last week or so against “A” pitching.
Travis has seen a fair amount of LF this ST. He’s adaptable. Nate’s hit his peak already, both mentally and physically. I know his arm is good, and he’s fast for his size, etc., etc. But he’s basically a RF. Put him anywhere else and he’ll get distracted as the cromagnon defense mechanisms kick in — Where am I? What beasts lurk out here? Travis is more like DeRosa, or Fontenot, or Huff — smart.
Flav, I could see that. so…suppose whoever is in LF rakes from opening day, and Pablo is rolling and the team gets off to good start. Does Belt stay down regardless of whether he lights up Fresno or not, or is it more likely he only comes up if someone in OF mix struggles? Sabes implies (whether it’s BS or not) that Belt plays regularly if he comes up, so even if it was May that would mean a vet takes a spot further down the end of the bench (or is dumped off), no?
Kawakami’s “chirpiness” segues in pretty well with some of the feelings around here. The caveat always is the possible matter of major injuries, particularly to the rotation or to Buster. That factor aside, it is hard to argue with a team which is largely standing pat going into the season. At this point, the primary hole is backup catcher. Such a hole!
This team makes me think about an outfit which in some ways was their reverse mirror image: The Big Red Machine. That bunch was based on a great team on the field, positionwise, and just enough pitching to make it stick. Their confidence level, and opposition trepidation levels made for a psychological climate which assured victory far more often than not.
Dennis’ concerns notwithstanding, the .750 winning percentage the Giants have developed and have so far maintained in ST conveys the confident attitude of a winner. These guys believe in themselves and are having fun on the field and in the clubhouse. Should the team carry their spring surge into their somewhat daunting early season schedule and develop a nice little lead going into May; i feel there may be major grumblings in the complaint department (the Splash) and a lot of verbal high fives here on the Flap.
A good ‘un forDennis:
Burriss 2B
Fontenot SS
DeRosa 3B
Rowand CF
Ishikawa LF
Belt 1B
Schierholtz RF
Eldred DH
NOWhitey C
Timmy “The Victim”
What makes matters worse (if humanly possible) after seeing that lineup. For one of the few times, today’s game will be shown on the MLB Network. The game’s on TV and Bochy trots out that shit? The man has one sick sense of humor.
WillieD: if everyone is hitting on big club and belt is hitting in Fresno I think he stays in Fresno until a significant injury to the big club or someone stops hitting. There is long term value in keeping belt in Fresno this yr if we can tolerate it
I’m closing the Flap league at 14 teams. Later today I’ll post something on the message board that will cover the following:
1) when the draft is
2) how to alter your draft board, should you wish to
3) an O/U on how many times we tell Bozo to go fuck himself this year.
Flav, I don’t care what you set the line at, I’m taking the OVER. Fuck you, BOZO!
Yup, take the over Dennis.
Yeah, I think Sabes is blowin smoke on Belt. Bringing Belt up now forces the issue with several players even though it’s only one roster spot taken. Starting Belt in Fresburg keeps him getting daily ABs, and if somebody gets hurt in the spring, there is more flexibility for roster moves spun around him coming up. Plus, as the season goes along towards summer, other teams’ injuries could push up value for Rohand, Ishi, Nate. And, like Posey, having Belt come up later could really add a dynamic to the team after things flesh out a bit first…
Best BB. Ever.
Ted??
Inge De Bruckslhskja. Nice and wholesome. Raised on a dairy farm in Holland. Won the 400 breaststroke in the 92 games.
even her lilting name lifts one’s, um, um, morale
The 400 breast stroke with Inge?
OK, sign me up . . .
I think you’re thinking of Inge de brung (or something like that). I want to say freestyle or maybe IM. steroids. also, no such thing as 400 breastroke, the furthest they go is 200. That being said, with her i’d be willing to extend myself. Certainly the training required to go that distance would be worth it.
Ye olde next door neighbor BB. Ed will be happy that she’s smiling
On the stats, I like the .389 OBP of Torres. Hope he can keep that up in leadoff. Contrast to .238 for Burriss. I think time has passed this kid by for any hope of really ever playing for the Giants. Too much potential competition at 2b from below, i.e. Culbertson. With his speed and no pop, I don’t get how Burriss cannot focus on bunting, slapping on the ground, etc. to get his OBP up. Belt’s stats are OK, not overwhelming. He should start in Fresno and get a couple hundred ABs, then let’s see where he is. As for Posey, whatever he’s taking, give everybody else the same pills. Whitey has had 12 ABs, howinhell does this guy go north?…
Sabean has been consistent- Belt stays if they think he can play every day. That decision has not been made yet. What he’s currently hitting has lttle bearing on the decision, keep your speedos on- in a couple weeks the call will be made…
Former Cards’ great Marty Marion has died, at 93. “Mr. Shortstop.”
R.I.P. I looked him up and saw he won the MVP in 1944 with highly pedestrian offensive numbers. He must have been one *hell* of a defensive shortstop
If this were last Spring, with all the LU and offensive questionmarks then, I’d say Belt should get a shot at 1B right outta the gate. But, this squad now on paper is far better and way more settled, so I’d let Belt get comfortable at AAA and get in a hitting groove down there for a bit, let the LU shake out for at least a month or two in SF…
Belt will be the first baseman. If he isn’t on opening day it will only be because they were unable to trade one or more of Travis/Nate/Rowand.
most…wholesome…bb…ever
Anybody have info on how much Huff has played or even practiced in the OF this Spring? I haven’t seen much of anything on that. If they are serious about Belt coming north, I’d think they’d get Huff some decent reps in LF just to get him reaquainted with it and up to snHuff out there…
Huff played 46 games in left last year, I don’t think hey’re worried about him there. Other than Burrell, Travis seems to have gotten the most time there.
Shit. My fly’s been down all morning. And I thought the chicks were just checking out my package. Fucking embarrassing. Anyway…
Did any of you see that painting in the Chron today? YOUR 2010 WORLD CHAMPION SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS by some dude named Mark Ulriksen who does a lot of NEW YORKER magazine covers. It’s pretty damn good. Very detailed with an interesting style. He’s having it trucked to Scottsdale this weekend to be unveiled at Don & Charlie’s Steakhouse. It seems, though he *is* hoping to sell it eventually (he hopes Wilson will buy it), he did it out of love for the Giants.
It seems I’m getting the big fuck you, Bozo on the Splash. Every time I try and post something I get a – can’t post your comment at this time message. Aren’t they supposed to Email you if you get banned or they put you on super secret probation or something?
“Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son. ”
On the Splash, however, it’s the required lifestyle.
Well, I’ve got that going for me.
did you do anything to get banned?
Ted, don’t you work at a bank, lol?
Yarp
No one filed harassment charges against you?
Not that I know of. Don’t think I’ve ever had any comments deleted or anything.
Yeah, I was having a hard time with this BB, body of a women but the face of an 18 year old. My daughter will be 18 this year. When I walk around my office building checking oul the female employees, I look at some and think oh she could be a friend of my daughters. Damn I hate getting old!!
Yeah, when I went to St. Mary’s for orientation with my daughter a couple years ago, it was a pisser seeing guys check her out. There were times she was by herself or with others, and I mean sure, the college guys are all looking. That’s a given. But to see the dads eyeballing her, it’s weird. She’s grown up.
I wanted to punch some of these creeps, but shit, these are beautiful young women. They ain’t kids anymore. I have 2 girls in college now . . .Too weird. If I think too much about it, I go fucking nuts . . .
Hey Chuck, my niece goes to St Marys, Junior this year. cool school. Yeah, when I see guys checking out my daughter I just think of the movie Clueless, the Father says to the kid who is picking up his daughter “I have a gun and a shovel, no one will even know your are gone”!
Ted, I saw that painting too. Pretty nice.
Yeah, St.Mary’s basketball team got hosed by the selection committee (but they did stagger down the stretch), and then topped it off by losing to Kent State . . .
Not to worry. Kids can’t have sex at St. Mary’s, it’s like BYU.
Uh, never mind…
Uh, no. But fuck off with that kind of talk, Boz… uh Snarkk.
Well, my daughter wants to marry Matt Dellavedova . . .
Nice AB by Belt to lay off two straight change ups to work the walk off Buehrle.
Then the dumb bastard gets picked off first.
The homer Sox announcers had lunch (Mexican) with Rowand. They said he said he didn’t expect to be here when the season starts. They already had him traded.
Now that’s what I call some encouraging enchiladas…
Can I get an Amen?
BLEEP YOU Chuck!
Holy shit, I just went to stubhub and the sellers have gone nuts!! the tickets that were $50 are now $100!! I see greed has taken over!!
So how does everyone buy there tickets, stubhub, at the gate, guys off the street??
My friend’s dry cleaner or the Giants website
I thought that was laudrying money not tickets!!
A little of both
Belt with a beaut of a swing for his oppo homer. You can just tell he has a good idea what he’s doing up there. Patient and selective yet aggressive at the right time.
NO Whitey, 2 for 3 with an RBI. That’s gonna leave a mark.
Well, for the Sox pitchers, it’s like skidmarks in their commode…
Damn. Belt with another great swing. Result; double to LCF to score Ishi. Kid’s a perfect 3 for 3 w/ a W. But we have Rowand’s 0 fer 4 to balance things out. I can’t believe this lineup is winning. Bochy is fucking with me.
Good ‘ol Gamer. Doing everything he can on the field to make the Giants pay more to some semi-desperate team to get rid of his contract. Plus groin issue, transparent disdain at playing LF, letting some BS fly at lunch to his buddy Sox announcers obviously for public disclosure. This dude is begging to get outta SF. Is he still taking 500 swings a day in the cage?…
Stewart would be a modest offensive upgrade over Vern’s boy, doubt that it’s enough to unseat NOWhitey. With all the talk of NOWhitey calling a good game, I’ve found the real reason he’s still here: Vera is said to make the best pan-fried catfish in Union County, Mississippi

I like it!
Torres, cf
Franchez, 2b
Huff, lf
Posey, c
Sandoval, 3b
Ross, rf
Belt, 1b
Tejada, ss
Pitcher
Ho Hum. Hard to stay humble. Another day. Another win in the desert. K’s galore with Timmy on his game and the R.P.’s whiffing em too. Belt just made his prime statement today that he intends to stay. I was wavering in the direction of a brief stint starting up the Fresnobus, but even with the baserunning gaffe, he’s looking more and more like a keeper from the git-go.
After yesterday’s heroics on the part of Ishi, now Nate gets frisky and gets some good work done with the stick. Either we keep Nate or he goes for a decent return in talent. Giants crowded L.U. got even more weird with Eli stimulating Vern’s long lost libido and Vera’s palpitating acceptance.
As for Row Row Row your boat the hell outta Dodge, it’s looking more and more like even in a dump to another team (like the Whitesux or the Fillies); S.F. will probably have to fork over a good $18M of the $24 for two years of good riddance. Peace in the clubhouse and among the fanbase is worth that price.
You know from my former avatar (if I can figure it out, I’ll put it back here) that I’m partial to mutts. Even if you’re not a dog person, beware that playing this linked video may generate a lump in the throat. If dogs can have this feeling for their own, maybe there is hope for us humans…
http://tinyurl.com/4fzojdf
As I’ve said before, if I were stricken, the first thing Zeke would do is check my pockets for quarter-pounders wirh cheese..
Touching video, Snarkk….
Well, the dog loyalty thing for humans is juiced a bit when treats are involved…
First Dub game I’ve seen all year.
Lee is worthless if this is what he’s usually like. Udoh has some game. His shot just ain’t falling tonight.
Fucking Beindris is non-existent this game.
Shit. Give it away.
Dubs will resport to long distance shit.
Oh yeah, or turn in over.
15-0 run for the Mavs.
Wow. Just a horrendous finish.
Cavs went into Sacto and beat Kings tonight. The CAVS. Last night, Dubs already had lost to Kings in Sacto about 6 minutes into the game…
Well, the good news about Rowand and Zito is that they are no longer 1/3 of the Giants’ payroll. They’re now only 1/4 of the payroll.
I can sleep better now…
