A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Checking Out the Spring Training Stats

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 16, 2011

16 days to go till it matters…….

Giants still have a lot of guys batting over .300. Of course, when one of them is No Whitey Stewart who is currently toting around an OPS of .897, you take these numbers lightly. Vogelsong has a sparkling 2.13 ERA but he’s walked 7 in 12.2 innings pitched. Pablo and Huff lead the team with 3 bombs a piece. Lots of other guys are doing things too, you can check out all their stats here:

Fascinating body of stats so far. Amazing part is that there are several guys with OPS in the .900 to 1.000 range. Huff the Magic Dragon is having him one helluva spring and so is Buster. Surprise. Surprise. Great thing is that they have been picking it up all over the lineup. One problem there showed up with the game-winning RBI last night by Travis. He’s had a generally draggy spring, but that hit demonstrated once again that he can be tough in clutch late-game situations.

Why the problem? For one thing Darren Ford has had a good spring, particularly in the SB department. He’s a weapon. Travis may be the player on the bubble the most, with Nate not far behind. Rowand is the one most agree should go, but who wants him? Either of the prior two have some trade value. So the Giants brass have some decisions to make over the next two weeks.

Nothing really crazy for ST, actually. They’re hitting .269, 17th in MLB.Team ERA is 4th. They’re on track with how they performed in the 2010 regular season, taking into account the “desert factor”. Look for an offense that will rank among the leaders in HRs but still struggle putting runners on.

And, my goodness, has Kawakami ever been chirpier? Sabean sounding like Belt could open with the big club, BTW

kind of out of character for this guy, agreed. so my question is who does this impact the most if Belt starts at 1B? Would Burrell only play vs. LHP (assuming Belt sits and Huff is at 1B)? Now how many do you keep out of Travis/Nate/Rowand? If MDR is now strictly a back up IF, where/when does he get in?

Kawakami was giddy because Sabean took his call.

First game is on my birthday, I should go to LA since March 31 is a holiday and I am making it a 4 day weekend. But I will have a better view on MLB TV. I still think that the Players just look more relaxed this year. I hope it carries over into the regular season. I know it is asking too much but I hope the bandwagon fan understands it is a long season and not to freak out over a loosing streak. Last year was fun posting shit about taking a step away from the ledge and all but we know the season is long. I know that TF is not doing computers but is everyone going to give there wins and losses for the season?

Sabean is just blowing wind up Kawakami’s ass. Bringing him up by May seems quite possible. Starting the year at 1st base? He can talk about it but he won’t do it….

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on March 16, 2011 at 9:26 am

May depend on how he fares the last week or so against “A” pitching.

  8. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on March 16, 2011 at 9:21 am

Travis has seen a fair amount of LF this ST. He’s adaptable. Nate’s hit his peak already, both mentally and physically. I know his arm is good, and he’s fast for his size, etc., etc. But he’s basically a RF. Put him anywhere else and he’ll get distracted as the cromagnon defense mechanisms kick in — Where am I? What beasts lurk out here? Travis is more like DeRosa, or Fontenot, or Huff — smart.

  9. willied's avatar willied said, on March 16, 2011 at 9:32 am

Flav, I could see that. so…suppose whoever is in LF rakes from opening day, and Pablo is rolling and the team gets off to good start. Does Belt stay down regardless of whether he lights up Fresno or not, or is it more likely he only comes up if someone in OF mix struggles? Sabes implies (whether it’s BS or not) that Belt plays regularly if he comes up, so even if it was May that would mean a vet takes a spot further down the end of the bench (or is dumped off), no?

  10. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on March 16, 2011 at 9:42 am

Kawakami’s “chirpiness” segues in pretty well with some of the feelings around here. The caveat always is the possible matter of major injuries, particularly to the rotation or to Buster. That factor aside, it is hard to argue with a team which is largely standing pat going into the season. At this point, the primary hole is backup catcher. Such a hole!

This team makes me think about an outfit which in some ways was their reverse mirror image: The Big Red Machine. That bunch was based on a great team on the field, positionwise, and just enough pitching to make it stick. Their confidence level, and opposition trepidation levels made for a psychological climate which assured victory far more often than not.

Dennis’ concerns notwithstanding, the .750 winning percentage the Giants have developed and have so far maintained in ST conveys the confident attitude of a winner. These guys believe in themselves and are having fun on the field and in the clubhouse. Should the team carry their spring surge into their somewhat daunting early season schedule and develop a nice little lead going into May; i feel there may be major grumblings in the complaint department (the Splash) and a lot of verbal high fives here on the Flap.

  14. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 16, 2011 at 10:41 am

Yeah, I think Sabes is blowin smoke on Belt. Bringing Belt up now forces the issue with several players even though it’s only one roster spot taken. Starting Belt in Fresburg keeps him getting daily ABs, and if somebody gets hurt in the spring, there is more flexibility for roster moves spun around him coming up. Plus, as the season goes along towards summer, other teams’ injuries could push up value for Rohand, Ishi, Nate. And, like Posey, having Belt come up later could really add a dynamic to the team after things flesh out a bit first…

On the stats, I like the .389 OBP of Torres. Hope he can keep that up in leadoff. Contrast to .238 for Burriss. I think time has passed this kid by for any hope of really ever playing for the Giants. Too much potential competition at 2b from below, i.e. Culbertson. With his speed and no pop, I don’t get how Burriss cannot focus on bunting, slapping on the ground, etc. to get his OBP up. Belt’s stats are OK, not overwhelming. He should start in Fresno and get a couple hundred ABs, then let’s see where he is. As for Posey, whatever he’s taking, give everybody else the same pills. Whitey has had 12 ABs, howinhell does this guy go north?…

  17. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on March 16, 2011 at 11:00 am

If this were last Spring, with all the LU and offensive questionmarks then, I’d say Belt should get a shot at 1B right outta the gate. But, this squad now on paper is far better and way more settled, so I’d let Belt get comfortable at AAA and get in a hitting groove down there for a bit, let the LU shake out for at least a month or two in SF…

Ho Hum. Hard to stay humble. Another day. Another win in the desert. K’s galore with Timmy on his game and the R.P.’s whiffing em too. Belt just made his prime statement today that he intends to stay. I was wavering in the direction of a brief stint starting up the Fresnobus, but even with the baserunning gaffe, he’s looking more and more like a keeper from the git-go.

After yesterday’s heroics on the part of Ishi, now Nate gets frisky and gets some good work done with the stick. Either we keep Nate or he goes for a decent return in talent. Giants crowded L.U. got even more weird with Eli stimulating Vern’s long lost libido and Vera’s palpitating acceptance.

As for Row Row Row your boat the hell outta Dodge, it’s looking more and more like even in a dump to another team (like the Whitesux or the Fillies); S.F. will probably have to fork over a good $18M of the $24 for two years of good riddance. Peace in the clubhouse and among the fanbase is worth that price.
