A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Zito’s *Dominant* Spring, an April Contest and a POTW Vote…

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 25, 2011

Barry’s really dealin’ these days, isn’t he? 2.49 Spring ERA. Sparkling. Of course his 1/1 bb/so ratio is a bit hard to swallow. He’s holding opponents to a .197 ba–of course when you’re walking guys all day long it’s kinda hard to get the bat on the ball. But hey, Zito got a 2.49 ERA this Spring. Last Spring, his ERA was 6.35. The year before it was 5.12…

Of course, nothing Zito ever does is a harbinger for anything that is about to happen next. Therefore, I have what is quite possibly the most difficult contest we’ve ever held here at The Flap…..

What will Zito’s ERA be for the month of April? We could have 1,000 people participate in this one and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if no one came within a full run of his actual ERA. But have at it, email me your pick to bigflavor77@gmail.com. I will throw some Giants schwag at the winner…..

Speaking of contests, it’s time to vote on the POTW— to the right you’ll see a page titled “This week’s Posts of the Day”– Click on it and you will find 7 entries. My personal favorite, if I read this correctly, was Ted actually doing a Capt Kirk impression with his post. That was gold. But maybe I was reading too much into that and he was just drunk. ๐Ÿ™‚

When I look at today’s BB, Somehow the Muddy Waters version of I’m A Man gets stuck in my head.
Or maybe, it’s just the stripper beat.

Pawlie – OD, Opening Day (Happy New Year) or overdose? You decide. I get in Thursday, head over to Harrington’s Bar and Grill on Front St. to visit with my old Thursday group. Friday, on the way to the Home Opener, stop by Red’s Java house to get some drinks from my buddy Rob the bartender. On my way to the Lot A to get my ticket, stop by the Public House and see if Kirsten is pouring. After the game, over to The Bottom of the Hill for their happy hour (either Greg or Matt will be bartending) and catch the sound check for Rube Waddell. Sat. Morning, back over to Pot Hill for drinks with my pals at the Connecticut Yankee, maybe catch the night game. 6AM flight back home on Sunday

Wow, Bozo, don’t what that all costs, but sounds priceless.
Talking blues with Unc yesterday reminded of all the small clubs our group used to hit up south bay 70s….saw Sunnyland slim on piano in downtown Redwood city near the pool hall on Broadway (old Little Fox maybe), great club in Palo alto corner of High and Univ. once called In Your Ear caught Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, H. Mandel, Mose Allison and early version of Asleep at the Wheel (Chris O’connell on lead vocal with big Ray)…Charlie Musselwhite over at Keystone PA across the street from Antonio’s Nut House on Calif.
Just so much venues to hear this type of music, esp btw JJs of south bay (where you could catch Chris Cain for $5 at the door) and SF.

Yeah willie, but knowing the bartenders helps with the costs a bit.
I was down in LA once in the 70s and went to see Asleep at the Wheel at the old Palomino club. Before their set, I went to take a leak and big Ray comes walking in. I just nodded at him, I mean what the fuck else can you do when you’re pissing next to the star of the show.

…meant to add famous words of Clouseau, “not anymore.”
    And Duck fuke!

So much of ST is irrelevant for the vets, Zito included. A year ago Nate had a slugging pct of over .500 Hideki Matsui is hitting .125 for the A’s, but he is not batting 8th or riding pine. This from Henry, “earlier in the day, in a continuing effort to fix Rowand’s swing (??), he played in a minor league game started by Colorado closer Huston Street. Bochy said Rowand had three hits.” Zzzzzzzzz

They’ve had all winter to fix Rohand’s swing, so taking a few cuts in a minor league tilt at the dog’s end of ST is going to fix it now? Double Zzzzzzz….

I got Baggarly’s book yesterday, and started reading it, and now I’m about 1/4 of the way through it, and my evaluation of the book so far is…..it’s great! I highly recommend the book. Everyone here should get it, IMO.
He takes an almost novelistic approach, and looks at the Giants’ season from different players’ perspectives in the various chapters. He takes the book title seriously as a thesis, he wasn’t just being cutesy with the title “A Band Of Misfits.” The coming together of the different individuals, their lives and baseball careers, and their remarkable team chemistry and journey through an amazing season is well done by Baggarly, and draws the reader fully into the story, even with the reader knowing how the season will end. I found myself so caught up in it, I was thinking- “Hey, are these guys going to make the playoffs!” That’s just real good writing- drawing the reader into the compelling story, even when they know how it’s going to end.
There’s plenty of new material for those that follow the Giants closely. I won’t mentioned any of his revelations because I don’t want to steal any of his thunder.
I really encourage everyone to get this book. Don’t think that it’s just going to be some kind of fluff or whatever. The book has depth to it.

    * Agree with Michael, POTD or POTW or POTY, whatever, here at the Flap, should be at least somewhat baseball related. Of course, that rules out any of my previous ramblings about Thai massage….

    * Zito’s ST ERA compared to likely regular season performance = how possibly attractive the BBs are compared to how much enjoyment you all would really get out of any of them.

    * Willied: Wow, really?, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee? Excellent. Once saw Asleep at the Wheel at a small club in North Beach whose name I don’t even remember. The best: Boom Boom Room, may it rest in peace.

    * “Fix Rowand’s swing”. Um, did the team really say that?, or was that just Henry having fun with poetic license….

    * Nice to think that not only does Bagg’s book have depth to it (courtesy of Z’s post) but that this team does too, and we are all in for another very entertaining and I truly believe completely rewarding season.

No one has yet acknowledged Sabean’s rootin’ for Rowand comments in the wake of the Ross injury.

No reason why Zito doesn’t pitch 190 innings with a 4.00 ERA in the 5 slot. Then they can just leave him off of the playoff roster again.

Of all the old timers I saw in various Bay Area clubs, Lowell Fulson at Eli’s Mile High stands out.

  19. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on March 25, 2011 at 10:31 am

Yo, Flappers, what’s happening with Bay Area weather? Emails from friends there say it’s been very rainy. One thing I loved about living there was that games were rarely rained out, since baseball season pretty much corresponds with dry season.

For all you who grew up there, maybe you can’t appreciate that — I grew up in the ’60s in Joisey going to Yankees, Mets, and Phillies games, many of which often got rained out. (Horrible fans but actually somewhat knowledgeable about the game, and say what you will about the east coast media bias blah blah blah, I saw a lot of great baseball there). When I lived in Boston for 15 years in the ’80s into early ’90s before moving to SF, it was baseball heaven going to games at Fenway, even when the Sox sucked. Nice early autumn pennant race nights. Great fans. They know their shit. Many of them are assholes, but if there’s one fan base, in addition to the Giants’, that finally after long silence deserved a championship, it was Red Sox nation. Sorry, guys, it’s just true. But I went to about a dozen opening day games at Fenway when they had to plow snow off the outfield grass…. ugh…

Next couple of weeks, how’s it looking on the west coast?

    • James's avatar James said, on March 25, 2011 at 10:44 am

The Sox fans went from suffering to insufferable in the general public estimation way too fast. Boston is the one AL team I pull for a bit, especially because of Epstein.

  20. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on March 25, 2011 at 10:56 am

Yeah, Epstein’s been great there, and yes, Sox fans did get a bit insufferable, but they earned it, and it’s who they are. Interesting to read Showalter’s comments about Epstein, focusing on payroll rather than good decisions made. Good luck in Baltimore, Buck…

The marshland right before Davis is full of water. If I lived in Natomas, I’d be REALLY nervous. They built that shit about 8′ under the levees that surround it.

If those levees went, there’d be a disaster close to New Orleans. Shasta is close to full for the first time in a looooooong time. Folsom is full as well. And there’s another. 2′ of snow that ‘s going to add on top of the 8-12’ they just got the last 3 days. Crazy. When THAT snow melts, they’ll be dumping tons of water into the delta.

Snarkk, I don’t know how much range you have, but given our current stable of shortstops I might take you on principle alone.

Damn straight, Snarkk. I met Mario Andretti at Laguna Seca when I was a kid, when he was racing F1. The girls following him around were stunning.

Better yet, rent Le Mans. Epic Steve McQueen movie. It was ripped by the press, but it was a good look at the behind-the-scenes shit in high-level racing.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2011 at 4:59 pm

I remember that one Chuck. Haven’t seen it in dogs years. McQueen and especially Newman did some real racing, although I think McQueen was more into bikes. There was also one called Grand Prix or something like that with James Garner in the late 60s?, when he was young and fit. I think that one was not as good. As if those dudes needed more juice to attract women…

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on March 25, 2011 at 5:03 pm

I remember arguing with some friends when I was around 8 as to how to pronounce “Prix”

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:02 pm

Grand Prix was a much better movie. the split screen at the start was unbelievable on the big screen (yes, i saw it there). the music was great (i still humm parts of it)

“do you ever get tired? of the driving?”

and yes, eva marie saint as well.

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:12 pm

le mans. who didn’t want a Gulf porsche? great color scheme.

we used to go to laguna seca for the CAN-AM series. saw bruce Mclaren, the wing car and the vacuum car designed by jim hall. unbelievable stuff. the vacuum car was so loud, you couldn’t hear the engine, just the vacuum. very weird when it went into a turn. Denny Hulme filling in after Maclaren died. saw one of the Mclaran cars at a car show and nearly went apeshit. My stepfather raced against mark donohue.

chuck I don’t think there’s anything going on with wordpress. I think you just got in a funk with it when you started trying to post pics/links. WordPress doesn’t like that unless you are an editor (or higher ranked).

Rondo also showed up in one of the old sherlock holmes movies with Basil Rathbone as I remember, playing the part of the “Creeper” who dispatches victims for his boss by breaking the “3rd lumbar vertabrae” as Holmes tells the awesome Inspector Lestrade. Lestrade character was f-ing hilarious, with the overdone accent and general idiocy…”More of your theories, Mr. Holmes? It’s facts I’ll be wanting.”

First time thru the Royals lineup Bum was sharp as a tack. Then the wheels came off. Boys in blue hit some hard shots off Farmer John. I’m not worried. His stuff was good, just missed with location too often. But I think Pablo has been spending time with Timmy at the In-N-Out. He’s put back on a few. Watch it there, Orson.

My post is directed at Tejada because HE’S the fucking new guy. And the declining guy. He’s the guy at a crossroads (I know you don’t think so, you are expecting a *Uribe bounce*, good luck with that) and in my opinion, MY OPINION, he either tailors his game to the park (which wouldn’t shock me but I don’t think will happen) or he dies many deaths in medium deep left field (which is what I believe he’s going to do)……

  62. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:27 pm

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:33 pm

I’m not going to bother finding his quotes about the park. You can do that. I think he was quoted when you were…..occupied.

  64. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:32 pm

Look, they might not TELL YOU they’re doing it, but they do it. If you are suddenly employed in a cavernous park you fucking take advantage of the *caverns*. It’s got a flip side too: Let’s see what Adrian Gonzalez does at Fenway……
Fact: Guys that are on the backside of their career who go from small ballparks to big ballparks HAVE TO take advantage of the dimensions. It’s easy, stop trying to upper cut the ball out of the park and start driving it. Good things will happen…….

  66. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:35 pm

my point is that if you are on the backside of your career and you move to a bigger ballpark you focus more on hitting the ball hard and less on trying to lift it. This is “hitting 101” people…….

  67. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Carnie Landsford was an idiot as a hitting coach. first thing he did was encourage the belief that it was “unfair”. good coaching.

    “coach, i just got out”

“it’s not your fault, the park sucks”

    “i’ll be in the bar”

“we don’t have a bar. but if you head over to Marketing . . .”

flav, you have an excellent point: you change your hitting approach depending on the pitcher. you change it depending on the park. time of day, hangover whatever. At pac belle, you drive the ball and hope for the gaps.

  69. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on March 25, 2011 at 8:52 pm

There is a HUGE difference in how this park treats LHers and RHers. And sorry-but many doubles are just HRs that came up short. The same advice Flavoro is giving for not trying to lift the ball will result in more HRs as well as doubles. Tejada should like Aurilia Plaza..
