A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Dodger Series and Bryan Stow

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 10, 2011

Bryan Stow. A man I don’t know……

I’ve struggled with this. There’s nothing about the Dodgers or their park that should necessarily be a reason to focus my wrath upon them because of their fans. All parks have their fan base that isn’t really a fan base—-just a bunch of idiots who want to get wasted and fuck with people. There are wannabe gangster-bullshit-pussies at every game. Bryan just happened to stumble upon the wrong two people. That’s just bad luck…..

I’m not going to Game 1 but if I was, and I had the stadium mic, this is what I would say: “Most of us  love this game. Turn to the fan dressed in Dodger gear near you and shake their hand. Maybe give them a hug. Bond with the people that share the same love of the game that you do…..”

The hoodlums that attacked Bryan have nothing to do with baseball. Remember that………

Flav, very well put. The unconscionable acts committed by those Dodger “fans” was an aberration. It was a despicable random act of violence that just so happened to take place at the ballpark. As you said, it had nothing to do with baseball. My thoughts and prayers are with Brian for a full and speedy recovery.

I have a real question that has no intent one way or another. I see all the media info about giving to Mr. Stow’s fund, and the Giants are having their own contribution thing tomorrow night, I understand. He was a paramedic employed in Santa Cruz. Does he not have any health insurance through his work? I haven’t seen anything on this topic…

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on April 10, 2011 at 10:38 pm

A lot of jobs don’t offer 100% insurance anymore.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on April 10, 2011 at 10:52 pm

However, yes. He is insured. Fully. That’s apparently not the issue. There are other family expenses they can’t or are having problems meeting whilst he’s out of work.

Stow works for American Medical Response, one of the biggest ambulance/EMT companies in the U.S. He has health insurance. In Calif. AMR typically goes after every emergency ambulance contract any County in the state puts up for bid. They win most. Cities that happen to own “grandfathered” rights to opt out of County contracts for ambulance service (see Health & Safety Code sec. 1797.201) are real happy they don’t have to deal with AMR. But it’s a thriving company.

OK, Barry Zito has two starts into the new year and they’ve both resulted in losses. If he remains healthy throughout the year, it’s obvious my pins haven’t reached their desired destination of Barry’s voodoo doll. But that’s besides the point. Give or take, the Chum Bucket is gonna have 30 more stars this year. Of those 30 starts, how many times do we win?

I’m setting the O/U at 10. That’s just 10 for Christ sakes. As in 10 furlongs like the Kentucky Derby distance. You know who can’t run 10 furlongs? Uncle Mo. Ask why? He’s a pig. Oink!

It was a good time, got to see a bunch of old friends and sitting in my old section at the yard was pure gold. The usher for that section (Gerald) was glad to see me and even happier to know I wouldn’t be there for the Dodger series. I have been known to talk major shit with Dodger fans, so perhaps he was right about this one.

Huge series coming up. Giants need to ratchet up their game, particularly situational hitting and to some degree, defense. It’s Bumgarner, Lincecum and Sanchez facing off against Kershaw, Billingsley and Lilly. Winning two of three at home after losing to these Bums at the Latrine, is essential for getting this team on a roll. Winning as many at home as the LaBumbos did against us in their yard would be an act of cosmic justice. Now that the ceremonial stuff is in the history books let’s play some baseball ~ winning baseball.

Mota has gotta be on the thinnest ice. One good outing, scored upon/inherited runners score the other times. That fastball, if it’s near the plate, gets routinely scorched.
Nate hitting the ball in the air again to no avail, Rowand with 3 good ABs, belt with a lot 4-3 outs. None of these are meaningless hits or ABs. When everyone is healthy, what happens now is gonna affect the future. When you have days like Fontenot had, it doesn’t help your situation.

The Bonds jurors started their day this morning by having the personal shopper’s testimony re-read. She saw Bonds get injected in the gut. (With what? Who knows.) He told the GJ only his MDs and team trainers injected him. If that’s the only lie they find him guilty of telling the GJ, wtf cares?

Manny’s serial juicing over the years again points to the ridiculous nature of this Bonds legal saga. Supposedly Bonds got called in due to the Balco connection. So, if there’s evidence twice now (at least publicly known from MLB) that Manny used, where’s the local fed prosecutor in Boston or LA or wherever there’s jurisdiction to getting some guys digging onto the Manny trash trail? It’s always been through this period and still is a fed crime to deal and use steroids (without proper medical prescription). Manny’s been getting them from somebody, somewhere…

You have to wonder what happens to Clemens if the Bonds case goes to shit for the prosecution.

I think there’s a ton more evidence against Roger, but we’ll see.

You’d think that if this drags out, there’s more reason for the prosecution to feel good. But if this ends in a hung jury, what? They start this whole fucking circus over?

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 11, 2011 at 11:37 am

Yeah, the jury’s definitely in charge in a criminal trial. Civil trials can go on forever after jury verdicts ,as the losing party argues that no rational juror could’ve, etc., and no scintilla of evidence supports, etc. The only time I remember hearing about a judge overruling a jury verdict in a criminal case was the dog mauling debacle. That judge eventually got reversed.

This jury may be fairly smart. If they’ve asked for the Hoskins sister transcript, there barking up maybe the only tree where there’s prosecution evidence that is relatively untainted. Though she apparently was an unwilling prosecution witness, she was clearly painted by the defense as having been under her brother’s thumb, so to speak, and thus might have motive to make up something. Still, with Anderson mum, it’s her word against Bonds, essentially…

From the jury instructions in the case:

    COUNT TWO – FALSE DECLARATION
    (18 U.S.C. § 1623(a))
The defendant is charged in Count Two with making a material false declaration before a grand
jury, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1623(a). Count Two alleges that the defendant made the following
    material false declaration (underlined below):
Question: Did Greg ever give you anything that required a syringe to inject yourself
    with?
Answer: I’ve only had one doctor touch me. And that’s my only personal doctor. Greg,
like I said, we don’t get into each others’ personal lives. We’re friends, but I don’t – we
don’t sit around and talk baseball, because he knows I don’t want – don’t come to my
house talking baseball. If you want to come to my house and talk about fishing, some
other stuff, we’ll be good friends. You come around talking about baseball, you go on.
I don’t talk about his business. You know what I mean?
    ********************************
Question: So no one else other than perhaps the team doctor and your personal physician
has ever injected anything in to you or taken anything out?
Answer: Well, there’s other doctors from surgeries. I can answer that question, if you’re
getting technical like that. Sure, there are other people that have stuck needles in me and
have drawn out – – I’ve had a bunch of surgeries, yes.
    Question: So – –
    Answer: So sorry.
Question: – – the team physician, when you’ve had surgery, and your own personal
physician. But no other individuals like Mr. Anderson or any associates of his?
    Answer: No, no.
In order for the defendant to be found guilty of Count Two, the government must prove each of
the following elements beyond a reasonable doubt:
    1. The defendant testified under oath before a grand jury;
    2. The testimony described above was false;
    3. The testimony was material to the grand jury before which he testified; and
    4. The defendant knew that the testimony described above was false and material to the grand
    jury before which he testified.
A statement was material if it had a natural tendency to influence, or was capable of influencing,
the decision of the grand jury to which it is addressed.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 11, 2011 at 12:01 pm

I don’t see any “verdict form” on the court docket, so final decision could be “not guilty,” without explanation. But it’ll be materiality, if not guilty ‘s the verdict. 😉

      • Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on April 11, 2011 at 1:51 pm

I’ve read conflicting reports about whether he can be found guilty of perjury and not obstruction. What you posted seems to make it clear that he can’t be found guilty of perjury unless they also believe that it was important to the Feds case.

Therefore, why bother having the tape played and the transcripts read if they you already believe his lying was immaterial? You’d think they would start with was it obstruction. And if they agree it wasn’t, case closed.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 11, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Maybe they took initial votes on all the counts and they were very close to convicting on the injection testimony — maybe a couple of people wanted to review the evidence. If that were so, things are going south. The other possibility is they disposed of all of the perjury counts except that one, so they’re fighting over only that one.

The obstruction count is strange. Any guilty decision on one of the three perjury counts could support obstruction. So I guess they’re running through perjury first, to see if it simplifies obstruction deliberation. I really hope the guy walks; I’m more than a bit disappointed by the time the jury’s spending on the matter.

I want a guy who can LAY OFF pitches that bounce in the dirt. Swinging at balls that are unhittable shouldn’t be the plan for the #8 guy. Kershaw is going to strike Pablo out 3 times tonight…….
    thanks Pawlie…….

  51. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 11, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Assuming it’s not a situation where Kershaw is forced to pitch to Pablo, I can’t envision an at bat where he gets anything even remotely close to the strike zone to hit. Even if he lays off and walks, what good is that? Panda is like our best RBI guy right now. Stupid to bat him 8

I remember when Bocock was up- the dimmer bulbs here were digging that he was working walks with runners on and 2 out, in front of the pitcher. It’s that kind of thinking that will get you urinal duty in B..

I MAY [emphasis mine] pass on tonight’s game. After all, it is a three-hour time difference and it is a long season and I must be getting old. I’ll invoke the Basking Amendment. (I also know I’m fulloshit and will possibly get pulled in.)

If Jerry Davis is gonna give that pitch to Kershaw all night the fans can leave right now.
That ball was 3 inches off the ground. Brutal.

I heard it on the radio. There was a moment where I thought he was handing the speech over to the dodger 2B, but then he started up again. I guess I missed an important moment. Even so, hell, he kept me listening.

I would never boo Uribe, Kent or any other historic ex-Giant. Any of you oldtimers know if they might’ve actually booed Mays, McCovey, Perry, Cepeda, etc., way back when?

  64. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 11, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Not certain I remember it or just that it intuitively sounds right – Cepeda getting booed when he was traded to St Louis for Ray Sadecki in 1966 (albeit, they probably booed Stoneham and whoever the fuck the GM was back then for making what I consider the worst trade in SF Giants history).

To be fair, the first strike 3 was outside, and the strike one in the second AB was the same pitch that Kemp took for a ball. He was looking for the curveball on the second strike 3. He’s a confused youngster right now.

Pat the Bat has rightly secured his spot in the line up, despite the goofy play.

Global baseball… it’s about 10:30am Tue. morning here in Saigon (holiday today, King Hong’s birthday, he who apparently “founded” Vietnam about 3000 years ago) so I’m home sippin’ my morning coffee, flip on the TV, and happy to see that ESPN/Asia has the game, live, with K & K doing the talking. I almost feel like I’m back in SF… nice.

  69. Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on April 11, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Even though he didn’t leave by trade I didn’t boo Kent until he said he always wanted to be a Dodger (same as Butler), Anyone traded, I wouldn’t boo. Mays may have gotten booed when he first came to town, I don’t recall Willie Mac ever getting booed.
Although, I’m kinda weird on the whole thing. You’re talking about a guy sitting in the St. Louis airport rooting for the KC and SF offense when Montana first played against us. My ex wife had to explain to the people around us the situation, otherwise they may have not have let me on the plane.

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on April 11, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Good question, I don’t really remember Loo. Although I’m thinking after his first HR to beat us, probably. Maybe Chuck remembers.
I don’t recall ever booing Chili or Mitch, but I may have booed Terry Mulholland a time or two.

      • unca chuck's avatar unca chuck said, on April 11, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Yeah, Clark was booed. But it was a good-natured booing.

Chili went strictly AL didn’t he?

He would have been cheered had he come back.
