A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Zito and his dumb Law…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 10, 2011

Does Zito seem to pitch on an inordinate number of Sundays? It always seem like that. There’s something so wrong and yet so perfectly tortuous about Zito pitching on a day associated with religion. Let us all hold hands and pray for a miracle!

I’m not a religious man but isn’t there something about resting on Sundays? Not working? Something like that. Maybe that’s the ultimate sin that fuels Zito’s Law. God is pissed off at him that he’s working all these Sundays. Oh well, who knows…..

I always like to try to predict how Zito’s Law will reveal itself in an actual game. Today’s pitcher is Kyle Lohse. He’s your classic journeyman #5–think Barry Zito with 1/100th the bank account. He’s started 4 games against the Giants in his career and we’ve clobbered him at a .340 clip. I’ll go ahead and say Zito’s Law applies itself today with a stellar outing from Lohse. Maybe Lohse could have had a better major league career if only he’d changed his name to something like “Wihn”……

Remember: “Whatever can go wrong in a Zito start will go wrong”. It’s a law……

Today Zito’s Law could apply in a convoluted way. What will go “wrong” is Rowand, starting in CF. According to Zito’s law, Rowand will have a good game, and be the difference maker (thus leaving the position vulnerable to Rowand’s patrol in the near future). Did you see how pumped Rowand looked last night after he moved from RF to CF and came in to make that important play on a drive to short center? The gamer smells redemption. Zito’s Law will ensure that he gets his shot.

“Wihn, Lohse,” good one, Flav. What a finish last night! In my excitement over Miggy’s drop-off double I woke up the kid, who fell asleep on the floor. As someone mentioned last night, everyone’s contributing, like Nate with those 3 hits off the bench. Should be a fun day flipping between The Champs and The Masters.

Yeah, I’ll be praying for Zits and the GMen, but I have a feeling that Lohse will be fueled/pissed off by all those zeros on Barry’s bank account and delivers the game of his life . . . sigh.

Chuck, when you get a chance – check your Fantasy League inbox – I have a trade proposed that ends at midnight if you don’t respond.

Tejada in early returns putting up much better numbers than any other SS in West beside Tulo. Bartlett is hitting .148 for the Pads, with an OPS of .381 while batting second in the LU. Furcal is at .208, with an OB of .240 and OPS of .490. Not much to brag about there from Tejada’s replacement, and Furcal coming off injury plagued season hasn’t been the igniter of old.
Tejada meanwhile has 3 doubles and an HR, OPS of .788, and has struck out just once in 33 ABs. Remember too, this guy didn’t win it all in Oakland and has been stuck on bottom feeder teams last few years. This is more than likely his last shot at success and one of those things handed out last night to everyone else. Sufficient motivation, imo.

Giants are due for another blowout ~ this one again in their favor. Unless Lohse has learned something new and sneaky from Duncan Donutz, SF will revert to their 10-Zip over the Bums/ 8-4 over the Dagos form. After the nastiness of lugubrious Garcia yesterday with his alternating screwballs and curves, Kylie should seem like a breath of fresh air. They will need that. Next on the agenda will come Kershaw and Billingsley to bring them down into low scoring affairs till once again they get a chance to geld the Lilly in game 3 vs the LaBumbos.

Buster set the table in the ninth after having a horrible time against Garcia. Huff, Sanchez and Rowand were overmatched right on through. Posey has not hit his stride yet in this short season. Maybe the soft single in that critical situation will help him break out. If that happens and if Panda keeps up his pace, SF could win 3 of these next 4 home games.

  9. willied's avatar willied said, on April 10, 2011 at 9:30 am

LaRussa has gotta be one pissed off mofo, having to watch long pregame SF celebrations on consecutive nights, followed by walk off Ws against his pen. His team’s record has now dropped to 2-6, worst in the entire NL save only for Lastros at 1-7. Pujols 1-8 with costly misplay Friday, and Berkman without a hit 0-8 not doing much for the middle of his LU without Holliday in there.

Wonder what STL bloggers feel about Rasmus, who stirred up a lot of shit last year, amid rumors he was going to be dealt. He flat out whacked that HR off Cain that put them ahead. He had to go a long ways and make a tough play to get to the ball T hit, had it briefly in the glove while being crowded by the LF before it fell…it just reminded of the stuff Fred Lewis was excoriated here for. wonder if the kid is getting the same treatment.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 10, 2011 at 10:13 am

Willied, I’m not certain about what STL bloggers think, but the team (which was pissed at him) better kiss his ass. Not too much to be happy about in St. Louis, what with Wainwright out; Pujols possibly leaving after this year; and their closer Franklin the shits (and believe what you want, but Motte is not the answer to Franklin). Rasmus is a talent that they do not want to let escape.

Don’t know if you guys saw this but the injury bug extends to the minors. Crawford is out with a broken finger, Adrianza torn thumb, Pegeuro knee surgery,Noonan oblique…so the two SS prospects are both out. 8-10 weeks for Ehire, 3 or 4 for Crawford..
In better minor league news, Gary Brown has 5 SB already in 3 games… Brown, Joseph, Dominguez all off to good starts in San Jose. Wheeler gets his first start today. Culberson also off to a fast start in Richmond, and Ford in Fresno…

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on April 10, 2011 at 9:57 am

Twin: Thanx for this update on the pipeline. It’s so early in the season that i haven’t checked the Mi. L. teams out yet. Culberson and Ford keep it up and we may see them wearing “SF” on their caps yet this season, maybe even before cuppa coffee time in September. Brown looks really exciting. He’s probably a couple years away, but with him and Peguero (if his operation works) in the offing, to say nothing of Ford, this team could be known for having the best OF speed and defense in the majors. Seems to fit PhoneBill park pretty well.

Willied, glad to see Tejada doing good and good points about him versus the rest of the west (wow, that rhymes). Also consider that anything above the mendoza line for any short stop is good, i.e., that is how far this position has fallen. Basically, you have 2 SS that are excellent – Ramirez and Tulo. Reyes of the Mets is next and he can be relied upon to be a productive hitter and base stealer. Then you have Rollins, who is doing good thus far this season, but was injured last year, resulting in a subpar performance. Consequently, I’m not ready to say Rollins will perform throughout this year (due to age and being injury prone). In regard to Jeter – see Rollins.

The rest? A big drop off in performance from the aforementioned. Tie this all together, yeah, we are fortunate to have a SS that is performing right now and hopefully he can be productive all year . . . but, I’m not expecting any miracles.

    • willied's avatar willied said, on April 10, 2011 at 10:04 am

yeah blade. Few weeks ago a guy in SFGate posted rankings for SS in the West, and put Tejada solidly on the bottom. Bibbawag and I posted rebuttals, but that has kind of stuck with me. Bartlett’s UZR numbers were very questionable in Tampa, and Furcal is equally erratic with the arm, and expensive. Plus K and K noted he does not run as well as he used to. Drew is on a bottom feeder team with no pressure, with a load of “potential” as yet unrealized. Miguel can hold his own with this group who are all distant second fiddle to Tulo.

I read somewhere last night on a non Bay Area media site a quote from DeRosa that his wrist “still wasn’t right”. Hadn’t seen that anywhere around here. As usual, the Giants are very coy on medical issues. I’m not surprised, he had a setback in ST on the wrist where they sat him for a while, and the issue kinda fell through the media cracks — by design…

  30. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 10, 2011 at 1:06 pm

I’m not believing at this point, due to their history, the Giants generic medical fluff statement on Torres. A strain is a tear, and it didn’t look like a plain ‘ol strain. I hope it is, and he’s only out for a 15 day DL stint. If he’s out for a sustained period with a tear, that just solved the issue of what to do with the Gamer. Just don’t put him in the #1 hole again…

Just tuned in. Been listening to fiddle music while getting tuned in two ways, one with vodka and Ruby Red, t’ other ya gotta guess. Just finished reading Vol. 1, No. 1. Life Magazine which i picked up at a local estate sale on Friday afternoon after a full day cutting firewood and loading the pickup and unloading. Spent $54 at the sale. Also got original Ted Williams cover Life, some wrenches, a fluting iron, a John Muir official Sierra Club ‘environmentalist
hat ~ cost me two bucks; a brass fitted pressure gauge for a buck; a wooden clamp; an ‘unknown’ tool or two; a tome of 19th and 20th Century art and a couple dozen carefully selected tapes ~ of which some classic American fiddlin is currently on in the other room. Rainy day in the Northwoods.

As for the game: Zito gets the B-team for shits n’ giggles. I’m sure he’s totally thrilled with that. You can see it in his pitch count ~ a shitload already compared with Lohse. It’s almost like Bochy is atoning to LaRussa for the Cards having to be the sports to go through all the Championship ceremonies ~ and them as also-rans. And then for good measure they lose the first two to late inning rallies against their closer. Us Norskies have an all purpose term for that: “Uff Da!”. That term packs about ten times the punch of the Yiddischer all purpose “Oy Vei!” ~ basically covers a lot more situations. So the Cards suffered an Uff Da in games one and two and Bochy is doing his level best to make nice.

Of course, seeding Franchez and Panda in the lineup of B’s did produce some early dividends.

Well, we do have a # 5 starter who seems good for five in early April. Long season. Bochy is doing a test pattern. B-Team not doing much against Lohse. Somebody goes down or discovers an injury when Commander Cody gets back to patrolling the precincts. General Bruce has gotta know.

Small sample size so far this season, but Giants defense is shaky. Now with Torres down, it’s even shakier. Today, no exception. They’ve got to get the leather working better…

Flav, believe it or not, this is the first time I’ve played in a rotisserie style fantasy league. I know it’s really early, but what’s the avg. expected winning score for our league? Mid- to high 80’s? How bout that Baby Huey as my closer. I’d bitch and moan if I could…

      low 90’s/high 80’s

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 10, 2011 at 3:23 pm

actually that’s for 12 teams and we’ve got 14 so I’d say mid 90’s, maybe 96-97, something like that

Seriously, even the most ardent and extremist polly Giant fan could not have thought today was gonna be bright. This had ‘L’ written all over it. I have a spot for today’s performance lined up right next to Uncle Mo’s barn. Oink.

    Adam Scott? 17 and 18 to play…

Seriously, though not technically a “trophy,” the Green Jacked has to be the best prize in all of sports. The Green Jack is unequivocally the greatest piece of “hardware” IMHO. To have the honor and distinct privilege of being a Masters Champion is tops in my book.

I love that Green Jacket. I’d never take that thing off. I’d wear it to the 7-11 at 3 AM.

Charl Schwartzel? If you had him picked, you’re a better man than I am. On second thought, if you had him picked you’re full of shit. NO Whitey in their right mind picked Schwartzel. I don’t know why, but Schwartzel reminds me of this famous line…

    “Would you like another schnitzengruben?
No, thank you. Fifteen is my limit on schnitzengruben.”

Well, I should have gone with Flav’s rule on Zito. But what did I say earlier. Bochy has to be ready to yank him! he wasn’t and the Giants paid. So does that mean Zito is an auto Loss everytime he pitches?? Maybe.

Giveaway Game. April. NBFD. If Huff can’t clobber Kyle froggin Lohse, let alone can’t even hit him, he should be dropped down the order for a spell so he doesn’t do much damage where he’s at. Tejada should bounce up a space or two. This all comes from my gut feeling that now that Bochy gave St. Louis this touchy, feely game (why does it always get laid on Zito) ~ Brucelips couldda pulled him after the second hitter got on.

Situational spot for a groundball inducer with one out. Damage may have been minimized or maybe even held off altogether. Bruciechoosie also got enough of a look at Mota to realize he’s probably quite good for one, but not really the efficient two-three inning longman the team needs to establish.

Somebody or two goes in a trade with the returns of Torres, Cody and Casilla. Gotta be a team out there who can use a generally reliable reliever (just possibly two) with options of outfield and infield vets. Looking at either quite decent lower minor prospects (likely in Calif. or Sally Leagues where Giants have farmboys) ~ or a slick-fielding shortstop for late innings: Ditto: Modest upgrade in backup receiver. Options abound. Scouts probably are, as well.
Interesting note that the Cardinals now owe one to the Giants. If needed, it will come by way of a turnaround game in St. Louis. Or~~ could the Cards possibly be a trade partner? They probably have at least one improvement zone in their bullpen.

Now the pernt of the bullpen moves: Vogelsong gets the call. Birdsong. Yeah i like the human interst appeal of this guy who signed with SF, had a brief cuppa coffee before heading to Pittsburgh in the deal which landed Schmidty; bounced around MLB for a spell, then off to Japan for five years or so where he taught himself the last few mental hurdles in the becoming of a pitcher. Comes back as the Longman for the World Champs. Not too shabby a move, i would say.

Relievers Mota and Casilla are the boys on the bubble. Some Jonesing outfit is sure to find one or the other most attractive. Let’s say some day this side of May the Giants land a game-closing defensive shortstop for all those occasions where the team hits the 7th or 8th with something like a two-run lead. Giants have good setup inning options, so it’s all good. Other R.P. attains either, combined with NoWhitey, in
a backup catcher upgrade ~ OR ~ a minor league prospect, probably 2 or 3 years from no less than a likely moderate M.L. impact ~ for R.P. #2 in a solo swap.

That darn Huff, damaging the Giants 2 years running now. And it looks like like Burrell lost his way to the way plate today.

Where’s our friend from Brooklyn, Loo? I’d like to hear his opinion on this years’ 3 yo crop as we approach the Derby. You’ve seen a few more runners than I have, but goddamn, these horses couldn’t stink on ice if they were shipped to Nome, Alaska.

Babe the Pig called to say hello, oink!

Gotta luv Kruk. His POTG for this turd of a game — the Gamer. For going 1 for 4 (meaningless double in 9th) and a couple of hard outs. No mention of the Gamer’s drop in center that let in an extra run (woulda been a sac fly) and booted Zits from the game. Torres has that no problem. BTW, that shot was off an 84 mph fastball. No clue why Rohand wasn’t wearing sunglasses out there, didn’t even have them on…

Big start tomorrow night for MadBum vs CK. Who, just happens to be my #1 fantasy SP. Sorry, but my jinxing powers seem to be shot. I guess w/ Tejada back in tomorrow’s lineup he’ll lead off…if Torres’ injury lingers more than we want, our leadoff spot becomes null and void.

Before the season started, Gyros had too many OFers. Now, they barely have enuf. The OF of Burrell, Gamer and Huff looks scary from a defensive POV…

  71. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on April 10, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Huff should never see the OF again. He’s the everyday 1B of the reigning World Champions. They didn’t pay him $22 million to be a fuckin’ circus act.

Dennis, my Derby horse all along has been Gourmet Dinner, unseen since an OK runner-up in the Fountain of Youth. Must be injured or something.

You don’t start the pen because you think the guy will get in trouble. Not that early. That’s couch potato shit, real life managers don’t do it. I’m not going to explain it you, you should know the reason.

Kroon got his first save at Fresno…
10 stolen bases today for the Grizzlies, 3 by Ford, 3 for Terry Evans..
Wheeler went 5 no hit innings for San Jose, 3 walks, 3 Ks
Dominguez had 2 HR, Joseph 1 . Brown stole another base (6)

Huff isn’t on the team because of a specific position he plays. For whatever reason he’s looking lost in the OF this year. I expect that to sort itself out quickly, once you own a skill……….
