The Showtime Documentary
I just finally had the chance to watch the trailer clip of “The Franchise”– 34 minutes long. I’ll tell ya, the only thing I didn’t like about that was the name of the show. It makes it sound like it’s all about Timmy and based on the trailer it’s about a lot more than one guy. Man, I watched that Kroon clip 3 times. What a guy and what a story it would be if he ever made it to the club…..
There were things I learned, I had no idea Franchez married his high school sweetheart (I think Belt did, too). 1700 people went to my high school and I think 2 couples got married that are still together. Huff and Wilson were hilarious. And what was up with that Torres workout? I’m down with the old school turn-your-backyard-into-your-gym-thing but my man, working out in the long jeans shorts? That’s a bad look……
the trailer did it’s job for me, I won’t miss an episode when it finally starts to air…….

Kinda figgered those bats would wake up down in the desert. And who should provide the biggest thump but Panda. Looks like a definite reversion to form. What is it about this team hitting in Phoenix? They lead all visiting NL teams there in taters and dingers with a total of 151. Wakening bats may be just what the Dr. ordered, cause they continue the trek with 3 games in the Box of Rox, where the home team has been sizzling against weaker opponents. Time those guys met their match.
Quietly, Matt the Horse has become one of the elite pitchers in the game. He now just about has to be rated among the top ten, silently basking in the afterglow of his more mediagenic fellow top ten teammate, Timmy the Freak. Two of ten amongst 30 teams is not half bad. Sure this assessment will get challenged, as there are lots of good starters out there. So let’s just wait till the end of the season to see who makes the cut. My money’s on the best one-two combo in the game. Fillies will be furious.
Nice thing in the immediate future about this dynamic duo is that the series in the Box of Rox opens with Timmy on the Hill and Closes with Matt doing the duties. Some Drrrrty dude sandwiched in between. If any combo can slow down the Rox in their own yard its this trident.
When will Unca’s Army sink to Ferretball standings? Only time will tell. BLEEP IT!
A swing and a Pat Misch for the daily Nipper drive by.
Hey, I just left ya a message on our fantasy board that Pat “Sing and a” Misch just got recalled by the Mets.
He’s all yours…
Shit, I swung and missed myself. “Swing” and a miss…
Weird kinda game, almost like the Giants turned into the home team Snakes by getting the big 3-run bomb from Pablo to make up for the 12 K’s. And while Matty had only one clean inning, the loudest knock he allowed was that bloop double by Drew in the 7th and he was never in any serious trouble. It’s been a long two+ weeks to finally get north of .500, at least until Zito’s Law takes effect.
Cain threw a lot of pitches in 6, yet only walked 2, SO 3, with only 4 hits. Key stat: 102/59. So I guess it’s this: The free swinging DBacks were taking and the ump was calling balls on a lot of really good pitches, then they put the ball in play. Hudson’s pitch/strike ratio wasn’t hugely better, but the Giants were swiinging like crazy and missing — thus the 10 SOs for Hudson.
Cain’s elbow sure looks fine. His ground ball total does, too.
I thought it was a classic kind of win- grab the lead against a good pitcher when he was vulnerable earlly- then hold on. To Stixman’s point- I don’t think there would be a big argument against ranking Cain in the top 10 now. Funny, though- a couple years ago many thought of him as the Gringo Sanchez…headcase, stupid, loser…wrongo on both guys.
First team to score more than 3 against Hudson since AZ got him last July…
Nice visuals about Torres throwing that cinder block around and jumping up a mountain of dirt piles. But, obviously did not help avoid an achilles problem…
Hey! C’mon guys, where are y’all? D.J. was just tokkin shit yesterday. I miss ya.
Okay. So it was a snag in the system. All i saw was my own post. Sometimes technicollegy gets a bit weird.
Impressed with the trailer as well. Interesting to see the access they have been given ie; the shots with Belt and Kroon in Bochy’s office. I haven’t heard or read much about it, so I’m assuming showtime and the players are happy with the arrangement. Everyone appears comfortable and at ease. When they started out bungling a few games, thought there might be some in the media or in the blogisphere who would point to or question the wisdom of doing such a show.
This evening’s matchup could be a floozie of a doozy. Zito against, who is it, Saunders? Sure, strange things could happen and the final tally could be something like 2-1. If you are betting on that you’ll probably find lottsa takers. May well end up at something like 11 to 7. Whose favor? Anybody’s guess, though the Giants have the far better BP.
Guessing games are allowed in this particular contest. My half-informed supposition is that the eleven extra-base hits will include 5 dingers. Walks will also be abundant.
Pen tonight, as Kruk says, will need to “strap it on” with Zitoid going in that dinger dome…
RT, Kuiper said on KNBR that the most surprising thing about the Showtime thing is how little the cameras are around. The Giants were expecting them to be around more. The players are already used to the Comcast cameras around filming their various shows, like In The Clubhouse, etc. The Showtime thing being a possible “distraction” is a complete non-issue. And the players like that the Giants players will get a little more well-known with the general public via the show.
Zito’s the equivalent of that guy on the Ed Sullivan Show spinning the plates. Let’s watch Zito spin some plates tonight.
—-
By the way, if there’s a worst baseball broadcaster than Jerry Remy on the Red Sox games, I’d hate to hear it.
I dunno, with Zito’s gibberish excuses after a start, if we’re talkin’ Ed Sullivan, kinda reminds me more of Topo Gigio…
Then you better steer clear of Sterling & Waldman on Yankee radio, Zumie. A non-stop assault on the senses.
no kidding; I catch them locally while driving around
Last yr, Zito had a terrible game against the Dbones late in the year- 9 runs in 3 2/3–but it was at AT&T. A week later in Az, he goes 6 and gives up just 2 runs.
Seems like a lot of “big” games early for our heroes. Up till now they were mostly to avoid a lousy start. Now let’s see ’em get a head of steam and roll into Denver ready to make an early statement. Rockies look strong. Tulo’s MVP-bound and Cargo hasn’t even started hitting yet.
And they haven’t had Jimenez, who returns Tues.
TedSpe already gets my vote for POTW, even if it is only indirectly baseball-related. Was “rattling” a reference to the Snakes? (BTW, in the enviro business a POTW is a whole “nother” thing, and it typically stinks. But not in this business.)
As we all know, Rockies games are TT (TrueTorture), coming back years. And they sure are streaky. I’d love to shut ’em down and quiet them, as DJLoo notes.
correction: …going back years
you’d think I’d be up by now.
An excellent illustration of the old expression, “doesn’t know if he’s coming or going.”
So have you ever met someone who actually doesn’t know their ass from their elbow?
must I add that I recognize the goodness of the badness in Ted’s post, that it is a marvel of Bulwer-Lyttonesque purple prose?
man, rain and wind here….you’d think it was a San Francisco fall day
A buddy of mine saw the Showtime thing and said it was pretty cool. He really liked the stuff in Bochy’s office. When Belt started to cry did Bochy really yell out for someone to get him a beer?
I need to call up the ol’ cable company and switch Max (rarely watch anyway) for Showtime.
If they send him down, maybe they’ll offer him a six pack…
you can watch the trailer here

Magnus, I’m watching it now. Pretty cool. Still get a basking chill up the spine. But at 34 mins long, it’s the whole thing, no?
What a great 34 mins. Kroon. You could do a show just on him! Total stand-up, classy, honorable guy. I’m not saying our Giants are saints or anything, but they strike me as a likeable group. And I like Bochy’s directness. He’s direct and straightforward, a settling influence. And yikes! Torres and his workout. Whew. The show made my day.
Will we buy it? I doubt it. I’ll find ways to watch it. We pay too much for cable as it is.
Doesn’t matter. Great entertainment.
Thanks for the link. The Giants website has a bunch of gems like that.
Rockies……..all in good time. Reality will arrive eventually and punch them in the gut.
Just asinine of Bochy to move Pablo down in the lineup vs the lefty. He’s our best fucking hitter fer chrissake!
CF Rowand, 2B Sanchez, RF Huff, C Posey, SS Tejada, LF Burrell, 3B Sandoval, 1B DeRosa, P Zito
Dennis, after watching “The Franchise,” I figure, Skipper, you know what you’re doing. Have at it.
I watched it yesterday myself. Why doesn’t Bochy offer me a beer when I cry? I cry every friggin day…
I believe the word that describes Bochy is “avuncular.” Now let me go look it up.
Figure Pablo could be hitting 3rd against RHers before long, but against lefty’s, I’m guessing they still aren’t sold.
Is this the first game Belt didn’t start? And just when he got the average up to .200.
I believe he sat Belt about four games ago; has sat Pablo too, and Posey (well, he would, as a catcher)
If Zito happens to pitch well, look for DeRosa to become his personal first baseman.
And starting DeRosa at first base won’t brighten Bochy’s dim bulb any either. He has like 11 career starts at 1B. The last coming in ’09. WTF not flop him and the Panda? Dumb. DeRosa himself said earlier this spring that he didn’t feel comfortable over there. Dumb again. I’m gonna go don my dunce cap so I can feel like I fit it.
Santiva looks spectacular in his stall…
is that some sort of alliterative poetry lesson? or code for betting? or raunchy slang?
How the hell can the Blue Grass still be called a “major prep” for the Derby when it’s run over a synthetic?
I’ll answer my own damn question. It can’t! God intended horses to run on grass or dirt. Pick one or the other goddammit!
Man, I’ve been bummed about kroon all day. Seems like a great guy– learned how to be a dad without having a dad— hard to do
Even harder if you don’t have children.
Great clip on the Showtime series. I especially liked the Sandoval, Kroon and Zito segments.
Sandoval’s image is built up as the goofy panda and all but his love of the game really came through. He committed himself in the off season and the early returns are looking good.
Kroon, what can you say? His willingness to keep the dream alive and report to AAA says a lot to me. Between all the arms in the pen and Affeldt, Romo and Wilson at the end of games it’s tough but I can see him in the mix at some point. Come playoff time the starting rotation could be looking at pitching 5 strong and then handing it over to the pen to bring it home.
The footage with Zito was appropriate. Driving around aimlessly, racked with self doubt, trying to right the ship. Sounds about right. Yeah he’s sucked but it’s a tired argument. I think he’s in even more of a no win situation this year. He could go out and pitch well this season and still be on the outside looking in come playoff time.
Kroon made like 20 million in Japan so he’s all good— what an amazing story it wqould be if he could get called up to get in a real game-his kids watching from a box, his dad wasted in some seedy hotel.
Better yet, the other way around…
Kroon, Vogelsong& Edlefsen. Sounds a bit like a Des Moines law-firm. Too, the names sound a bit musical, conjuring up a crooner like Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. The Birdsong translation speaks for itself. Now that Norskie or Dansker from the South Minneapolis burbs just about hasta be playing something like a xylophone or maybe a Hardanger fiddle.
Mark those names well, though. They currently are the cutting edge of the Fresno bullpen and were they not highest in the pipeline of the reigning World Champs, are talented enough to be currently pitching in the vast majority of ML bullpens.
Yes, the Giants pipeline is that deep in quality relievers. That’s why i still feel a trade might be looming, either on Commander Cody’s return to the L.U., or on the rebound of Torrid Torres. We are looking at a position player on the bubble. Most likely Nate, at this point. Ishikawa is still hovering at Fresno. Casilla is soon to come off the D.L. So SF may have one or more veteran relievers, together with one or more position players for seasoning.
There are contending, or at least strongly pretending, teams out there who are simply jonesing for bullpen improvement. Milwaukee immediately comes to mind as a team which lost in the late innings again last night. Do they have any bright lights in their system whom the Giants could use? The team Milwaukee may have to beat, Cincinnati. also suffers from latter inning sagging. Do they have an interesting prospect, or would anyone on their roster be available and of use?
My feeling is that the DL game can only be played for so long.Giants are looking at a glut. Something’s gotta give. Perhaps some other team will suffer an injury where a now-glowing need becomes unmasked in the process and SF is first on the scene to offer managed assistance.
Strong baseball post again, Stix. In other words: no shot at POTD…Zit has a tenuous hold on a spot in the rotation- which means he’ll pitch just well enough to keep it.
Who’d replace him if he lost his spot?
Come to think of it, who’s our emergency starter anyway?
If Craig approves, I’ll leave 5 Prospects up at a time.
Bochy’s keys to success for Zitshit tonight: “He needs to throw strikes and keep the ball down.”
The man’s a fucking genius.
I’ll ask one last time: What in the wide, wide, world of sports is DeRosa doing over at first base?
Heads up to the fans sitting in the front row behind the first base dugout. Balls are headin’ your way…
those guys sitting in LF too.
If that little Runt bunts here I’ll break his little neck.
even dumber, he struck out on two pitches way out of the zone.
Another 10 and Zito’s home free.
The Fruckster has always been a hacker.
Someone really needs to tell Zito about that shit on his face.
Give it right back Zits
Fucking Zito. I could just donkey punch that fucker in the teeth.
I’ve really had it with this waste. What guts it would take to just release him.
He’s not even a decent mop-up guy.
Zito has less upside than the last shit I took.
that’s an auto DP if you let it drop.
Asshole doesn’t even replace his divots. That’ll get you kicked outta Bushwood.
Ha! The dummy injured himself. There is a God.
Pussy . . . Please go on the DL.
I hope he drowns in the shower.
Now someone answer my prophetic 5:16 post, please.
Our prayers have been answered. Now what?
Zito’s law takes effect yet again. How much longer do we have to witness this continuing abomination of a starting pitcher? I suggest a 60 day DL stint immediately, call up Vogelsong. Miller could barely mask his distaste at chronicling the 81 mph “fastballs”. At least we’ve got a shot now at winning this game…
what happened? how’d he get injured? warming up? thinking too hard? playing guitar? what happened?
Nice to know we haven’t forgot how to GIDPs. Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
You mean Jesus to Mary to Joseph…
Time for Huff to put one in that stupid fuckin’ swimming pool.
The Yanks hit into 6 DPs the other day. I’ve always wanted to be more like the Yankees…
I remember a game with Marichal pitching vs. Astros where Giants hit into 6 DPs. Lost, too, and I think he owned them.
Pawlie K., Zito dove to catch a soft liner in front of him, and landed hard on a knee.
Zumie, thanks; appreciate that space between the two words before “a knee.” Burrell, though he just got a hit, deserves at least as much criticism as Rowand would be getting OR AS ANYONE SHOULD BE GETTING FOR GIDP!!!!!!!!!!!
Great play by Tejada . . . very impressed.
Guy woulda been out at home with a throw from Sanchez. This defense continues to give away runs…
And the ball hit by Mora would have been caught by a “normal” RFer. Huff continues to kill us out there…
Watching via Kostaz. Honestly I can’t figure why Mota was offered a minor (not MLB) league contract and was “on the bubble.” He does his job. Under pressure. Pretty consistently, including in the postseason. (Of course, as I type this a run scores.) (I stand by my statement.)
A testament to the strength of the pen. Coming into the season, he was behind Casilla Ramirez and Romo.
4 DPs so far. Shall we go for a new record?…
we were never allowed to keep the “new” with record at the newspaper copydesk, but isn’t that a bit much? feckin situational hitting, or lack thereof
Unmotherfuckingbelievable. GIDP Record, here we come.
Mota seems to be excellent in single-inning stints. Second time around something seems to happen. Team still needs a long-man, whether or not Zito goes down. Vogelsong would fit both the starter and long roles.
Giants press release:
The SF Giants have traded Barry Zito to the Oaktown A’s for Braden Dallas.
The Giants want to thank Zito for his years of service and leadership skills.
The A’s are happy to add the veteran to their pitching staff.
MLB press release, following the Giants press release:
After much discussion between the two teams, the Giants have decided to
give back their territorial rights of the city of San Jose to the A’s. This
agreement was in the best interest of MLB. In their statement, the Giants
included their best wishes for the A’s in financing their “little” project.
For real? Or, are these “scenes we’d like to see” ala Mad Magazine?
In my head Blade, it’s the only way. Give up the rights to get rid of the fuck.
Kings used to trade territory as part of marriage contracts and such. Modern antitrust laws pretty much put the kibosh on royal monopolies. Slave trading survived a bit longer, but it’s pretty much gone in this country, too.
A-froggin-mazin. Mota gets run out to his longest relief stint ever. Talk about doing it for the team. Runzler has been inactive lately. Do we see him next?
Multi-tasking here – watching the Giants on Kostaz; NBA on ESPN and monitoring my FL teams . . . Anywho, has anyone else seen the new AXE shampoo commercial (just on ESPN) with the guy washing off the seawater at the beach? Quite titilating – easily approaches the threshhold of soft porn . . . grin. All good.
Rowand’s having a day!
A couple of the DPs were on hard hit balls, that’s just unlucky..
That’s how ya stay outta the DP…
By way of Runt power, not bunt power.
bout time. Hope they can make a winner out of Mota, he deserves it today.
Just wanna give my props to Mota today. Excellent job coming outta the pen in relief.
Nice clutch job hit by Franchez, after a hiccup not throwin home. The thing with Zito is that after a while, the Pen gets used up picking up his poo all the time, puts more pressure on the other 4 starters to go longer in their starts…
Fuck that
Fuck me with a spoon. That’s 5 and counting.
here comes the part where TF says the ball was hit hard and we’re just unlucky.
Some are, some aren’t…
“The Yanks hit into 6 DPs the other day.” 5+ GIDP games may replace the last no-hit fad in 2011.
