A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Showtime Documentary

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 16, 2011

I just finally had the chance to watch the trailer clip of “The Franchise”– 34 minutes long. I’ll tell ya, the only thing I didn’t like about that was the name of the show. It makes it sound like it’s all about Timmy and based on the trailer it’s about a lot more than one guy. Man, I watched that Kroon clip 3 times. What a guy and what a story it would be if he ever made it to the club…..

There were things I learned, I had no idea Franchez married his high school sweetheart (I think Belt did, too). 1700 people went to my high school and I think 2 couples got married that are still together. Huff and Wilson were hilarious. And what was up with that Torres workout? I’m down with the old school turn-your-backyard-into-your-gym-thing but my man, working out in the long jeans shorts? That’s a bad look……

the trailer did it’s job for me, I won’t miss an episode when it finally starts to air…….

Kinda figgered those bats would wake up down in the desert. And who should provide the biggest thump but Panda. Looks like a definite reversion to form. What is it about this team hitting in Phoenix? They lead all visiting NL teams there in taters and dingers with a total of 151. Wakening bats may be just what the Dr. ordered, cause they continue the trek with 3 games in the Box of Rox, where the home team has been sizzling against weaker opponents. Time those guys met their match.

Quietly, Matt the Horse has become one of the elite pitchers in the game. He now just about has to be rated among the top ten, silently basking in the afterglow of his more mediagenic fellow top ten teammate, Timmy the Freak. Two of ten amongst 30 teams is not half bad. Sure this assessment will get challenged, as there are lots of good starters out there. So let’s just wait till the end of the season to see who makes the cut. My money’s on the best one-two combo in the game. Fillies will be furious.

Nice thing in the immediate future about this dynamic duo is that the series in the Box of Rox opens with Timmy on the Hill and Closes with Matt doing the duties. Some Drrrrty dude sandwiched in between. If any combo can slow down the Rox in their own yard its this trident.

Weird kinda game, almost like the Giants turned into the home team Snakes by getting the big 3-run bomb from Pablo to make up for the 12 K’s. And while Matty had only one clean inning, the loudest knock he allowed was that bloop double by Drew in the 7th and he was never in any serious trouble. It’s been a long two+ weeks to finally get north of .500, at least until Zito’s Law takes effect.

Cain threw a lot of pitches in 6, yet only walked 2, SO 3, with only 4 hits. Key stat: 102/59. So I guess it’s this: The free swinging DBacks were taking and the ump was calling balls on a lot of really good pitches, then they put the ball in play. Hudson’s pitch/strike ratio wasn’t hugely better, but the Giants were swiinging like crazy and missing — thus the 10 SOs for Hudson.

Cain’s elbow sure looks fine. His ground ball total does, too.

I thought it was a classic kind of win- grab the lead against a good pitcher when he was vulnerable earlly- then hold on. To Stixman’s point- I don’t think there would be a big argument against ranking Cain in the top 10 now. Funny, though- a couple years ago many thought of him as the Gringo Sanchez…headcase, stupid, loser…wrongo on both guys.

Impressed with the trailer as well. Interesting to see the access they have been given ie; the shots with Belt and Kroon in Bochy’s office. I haven’t heard or read much about it, so I’m assuming showtime and the players are happy with the arrangement. Everyone appears comfortable and at ease. When they started out bungling a few games, thought there might be some in the media or in the blogisphere who would point to or question the wisdom of doing such a show.

  11. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on April 16, 2011 at 10:49 am

This evening’s matchup could be a floozie of a doozy. Zito against, who is it, Saunders? Sure, strange things could happen and the final tally could be something like 2-1. If you are betting on that you’ll probably find lottsa takers. May well end up at something like 11 to 7. Whose favor? Anybody’s guess, though the Giants have the far better BP.

Guessing games are allowed in this particular contest. My half-informed supposition is that the eleven extra-base hits will include 5 dingers. Walks will also be abundant.

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 16, 2011 at 11:03 am

RT, Kuiper said on KNBR that the most surprising thing about the Showtime thing is how little the cameras are around. The Giants were expecting them to be around more. The players are already used to the Comcast cameras around filming their various shows, like In The Clubhouse, etc. The Showtime thing being a possible “distraction” is a complete non-issue. And the players like that the Giants players will get a little more well-known with the general public via the show.

Seems like a lot of “big” games early for our heroes. Up till now they were mostly to avoid a lousy start. Now let’s see ’em get a head of steam and roll into Denver ready to make an early statement. Rockies look strong. Tulo’s MVP-bound and Cargo hasn’t even started hitting yet.

Great clip on the Showtime series. I especially liked the Sandoval, Kroon and Zito segments.

Sandoval’s image is built up as the goofy panda and all but his love of the game really came through. He committed himself in the off season and the early returns are looking good.

Kroon, what can you say? His willingness to keep the dream alive and report to AAA says a lot to me. Between all the arms in the pen and Affeldt, Romo and Wilson at the end of games it’s tough but I can see him in the mix at some point. Come playoff time the starting rotation could be looking at pitching 5 strong and then handing it over to the pen to bring it home.

The footage with Zito was appropriate. Driving around aimlessly, racked with self doubt, trying to right the ship. Sounds about right. Yeah he’s sucked but it’s a tired argument. I think he’s in even more of a no win situation this year. He could go out and pitch well this season and still be on the outside looking in come playoff time.

Kroon, Vogelsong& Edlefsen. Sounds a bit like a Des Moines law-firm. Too, the names sound a bit musical, conjuring up a crooner like Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. The Birdsong translation speaks for itself. Now that Norskie or Dansker from the South Minneapolis burbs just about hasta be playing something like a xylophone or maybe a Hardanger fiddle.

Mark those names well, though. They currently are the cutting edge of the Fresno bullpen and were they not highest in the pipeline of the reigning World Champs, are talented enough to be currently pitching in the vast majority of ML bullpens.

Yes, the Giants pipeline is that deep in quality relievers. That’s why i still feel a trade might be looming, either on Commander Cody’s return to the L.U., or on the rebound of Torrid Torres. We are looking at a position player on the bubble. Most likely Nate, at this point. Ishikawa is still hovering at Fresno. Casilla is soon to come off the D.L. So SF may have one or more veteran relievers, together with one or more position players for seasoning.

There are contending, or at least strongly pretending, teams out there who are simply jonesing for bullpen improvement. Milwaukee immediately comes to mind as a team which lost in the late innings again last night. Do they have any bright lights in their system whom the Giants could use? The team Milwaukee may have to beat, Cincinnati. also suffers from latter inning sagging. Do they have an interesting prospect, or would anyone on their roster be available and of use?

My feeling is that the DL game can only be played for so long.Giants are looking at a glut. Something’s gotta give. Perhaps some other team will suffer an injury where a now-glowing need becomes unmasked in the process and SF is first on the scene to offer managed assistance.

Watching via Kostaz. Honestly I can’t figure why Mota was offered a minor (not MLB) league contract and was “on the bubble.” He does his job. Under pressure. Pretty consistently, including in the postseason. (Of course, as I type this a run scores.) (I stand by my statement.)

A testament to the strength of the pen. Coming into the season, he was behind Casilla Ramirez and Romo.

4 DPs so far. Shall we go for a new record?…

we were never allowed to keep the “new” with record at the newspaper copydesk, but isn’t that a bit much? feckin situational hitting, or lack thereof

Mota seems to be excellent in single-inning stints. Second time around something seems to happen. Team still needs a long-man, whether or not Zito goes down. Vogelsong would fit both the starter and long roles.

    Giants press release:
The SF Giants have traded Barry Zito to the Oaktown A’s for Braden Dallas.
The Giants want to thank Zito for his years of service and leadership skills.
The A’s are happy to add the veteran to their pitching staff.

MLB press release, following the Giants press release:
After much discussion between the two teams, the Giants have decided to
give back their territorial rights of the city of San Jose to the A’s. This
agreement was in the best interest of MLB. In their statement, the Giants
included their best wishes for the A’s in financing their “little” project.

Kings used to trade territory as part of marriage contracts and such. Modern antitrust laws pretty much put the kibosh on royal monopolies. Slave trading survived a bit longer, but it’s pretty much gone in this country, too.

A-froggin-mazin. Mota gets run out to his longest relief stint ever. Talk about doing it for the team. Runzler has been inactive lately. Do we see him next?

Multi-tasking here – watching the Giants on Kostaz; NBA on ESPN and monitoring my FL teams . . . Anywho, has anyone else seen the new AXE shampoo commercial (just on ESPN) with the guy washing off the seawater at the beach? Quite titilating – easily approaches the threshhold of soft porn . . . grin. All good.

Nice clutch job hit by Franchez, after a hiccup not throwin home. The thing with Zito is that after a while, the Pen gets used up picking up his poo all the time, puts more pressure on the other 4 starters to go longer in their starts…
