A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bonds Will Never Get into the Hall of Fame….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 23, 2011

I like Gwen Knapp. I don’t find her columns especially interesting but I almost always agree with her perspective. But in her column about Bonds and the HOF today she wrote “He would have been a first ballot shoo-in based on his performances through 1998.” I shook my head sideways. I don’t think his body of work through ’98 does it.  Between his debut in ’86 and his 1998 season he won 3 MVP’s (he actually won them in ’90, ’92 and ’93).  In those 13 seasons he had an OPS over 1.000 in 7 of them. Pretty dominant. *Hall of Fame* dominant? Sorry, but 7 seasons of dominance isn’t enough to ticket you as a shoo-in to the Hall of Fame…..

He did win 4 more MVP’s after ’98. And there was, of course, the 73 bombs in 2001. Now THAT should get you into the Hall of Fame! Longevity. Dominance. That’s HOF material. But of course, now we know how he did THAT.

Will he make it into the Hall of Fame?  I think he’s a shoo-in to NOT make the HOF. I think the writers are itching to stamp their imprint on the steroid-era and keeping out all the steroid guys is going to be the way they do it. By steroid guys, I’m talking specifically about any of the players who testified before Congress or who have been involved in BALCO or any prosecution. Off the top of my head, that’s Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Giambi, Palmiero, Pettitte and Clemens. I’m probably missing a couple and there were obviously other users, but those are the guys who lied to everyone. At least to their face.

From a numbers stand point, Sosa is the MAIN guy who keeps them all out. He had settled into a nice little 30 HR/yr career. Nothing too special. Nice. Most people forget *nice*. Then he and McGwire go viral on everyone in ’98. He puts up 66 bombs that year, follows it up with 63. Over a 4 year period Sammy Sosa hit 243 home runs. Juuuuust a little of the top.

They can’t keep all the steroid guys out, but they can keep the liars and the *fatheads* out because there’s a concrete list of those guys. And if you don’t think the Hall has a problem with keeping out the best of the best just look at how long Pete Rose has been standing outside in the rain without an umbrella….

I’m interested to see where SF stacks up offensively; if they are on pace to score similar amount of runs as last year. I still think there are going to be nights of torture like last year when they just aren’t going to score much and will have to rely on pitching and D. When you don’t get quite enough of that like last night, and the regulars in the LU don’t pick it up at the plate…
I give bochy credit for running runzler and mota, who both gave up a couple of runs to the ROx, back out there last night and going quickly to Vogs. Pen guys kept them in it, just couldn’t score enough to come back.
I don’t see how you can keep Bonds out, but the other guys flav mentioned besides clemens (hey there’s a lot of assholes already in) aren’t deserving, imo, irregardless of the roids issue. Rose doesn’t enter into it because of the gambling on games, not because he’s an idiot nobody likes.

  2. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 23, 2011 at 8:35 am

Rose is out because he’s been banned from baseball by the Commissioner. That won’t change as long as the Budster is in power. When he leaves, it might change, if the next commish thinks he’s suffered long enough. IMO, Rose stays out longer than the ‘roid guys. The ‘roid guys cheated to get better, that helps to win games. Baseball has always had cheating to win, of some sort. Gambling is a fundamental threat to the whether a player or manager plays to win the game. Rose violated THE cardinal rule that even the dumbest rookie in A ball knows — you’re out of MLB if you get caught betting on games. Period. There is no forgiveness for that Original Sin. He denies now that he bet while he played, I don’t believe him. I think the MLB report he signed admitted he bet on “other” teams games while he managed, and if that’s the case, I don’t believe that either — I think he bet on his own games, too. In a real sense, betting while managing is even a worse sin because you can so influence who pitches when and how long, not to mention position player manipulation. Rose certainly belongs in the HOF for his on field exploits, but deservedly can be kept out because of his serial betting problem while in MLB and the guys he consorted with to do it. If it’s a choice in the clubhouse hallway between Greg Anderson or Paulie Walnuts and Christopha’, I’ll take Anderson every day of the week…

After the formal investigation proved Rose had bet on baseball games, a lot of baseball games, mlb moved into the punitive phase of the Pete Rose gambling proceedings. Bart Giamatti allowed Rose to stop the proceeding by entering into a settlement agreement. Rose agreed to banishment. The HOF separately decided to ban him, after the settlement. The agreement allows him to seek reinstatement. Giamatti died about a week after brokering the settlement. Fay Vincent was hell bent to keep Rose out. Selig just hasn’t had the balls to reinstate Rose. A new commissioner might.

Rose claimed he bet on the Reds while he managed, not just “other teams.”
” I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team,” Rose said. “I did everything in my power every night to win that game.”
This to Dan Patrick and Olberman, I presume in response to the reports that he didn’t bet on every game ( not betting certain games is as damning as wagering on them)_actually, more damning.

You get a chance to win it all every year but rarely do you get a chance to repeat. The front office must do whatever is necessary to make sure this team gets what it needs. They improved the team on the cheap last season. Might have to spend some bucks this time around. I would assume they have money to spend when the time comes later on.

The HOF can blow me ever since they “punished’ Marichal for a couple of years. Do they think they taught him a lesson 15 years later? Fuck those judgmental cocksuckers. Rose (who I’ve always hated) belongs, too. Who the fuck do they think they are?

Gwen Knapp’s coverage of the Bonds’ trial and verdict was nasty and sarcastic — some of the most self indulgent “journalism” I’ve eve seen. She’s making the most of the scraps left behind by Fainaru-Wada and Williiams. During the video feed showing the press inteviewing the jury after the trial you could see Knapp pacing in the background, taking notes, eager for blood. The HOF schtick is what she’s decided to ride for a while. Pathetic.

Bonds is fucked. The greatest player in the last 20 years is going to be shut out of the HOF because he was the best on roids as well as off. I voted for eventually, but not on the first ballot, just because it sounds good. But he’s fucked.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 23, 2011 at 9:16 am

I got distracted by my loathing for the odious Gwen Knapp and forgot to explain: If they keep Bonds out, they can justify keeping out every other tainted roider. So they will.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 23, 2011 at 9:35 am

Agree with you that Knapp wrote the most bellicose coverage of the trial that I saw. Barry must have dissed her big time or something is in their shared past. Her take on just about every possible nuance of the goings on was uber negative to Bonds. Her articles weren’t reports, they were ongoing editorials with trial reportage as underlayment…

The BBWAA members have a huge hypocrisy quotient in voting for steroid era HOF members. A lot, a lot if not most of them HAD to know steroids were rampant in MLB locker rooms in that era. It was their JOB to know or suspect. Yet, where were the stories, where were the interviews with sources that could support a story? Nowhere, or buried. Where was any follow up on the Boswell story in 1988? They and their editors were complicit, they were part of it all. Yet, they have the power over the red/green light HOF button. So, not voting for Bonds and Clemens and any other top players publicly now associated with ‘roids is the height of writer hypocrisy. With what we know now about that time, it would be my assumption that anybody good enough to be a HOF candidate from that era was possibly doing ‘roids, along with a huge percentage of the lesser lights of the MLBPA playing at the time. So, it should make no difference in a HOF vote. The playing field during that time for those elite guys has to be assumed as level…

No surprise; Selig should not be seen as the white knight in this saving of the Dodgers. He had a huge hand in greasing the sale to McCourt, though there was an alternate all-cash buyer at the time, and wiser heads expressed concern that McCourt was a huge risk due to his almost utter lack of contributed equity into the purchase. http://sportsbybrooks.com/dr-selig-forced-to-slay-frankenstein-monster-29647

Thankfully i missed most of last night’s game. A couple of my friends were hosting a party celebrating their last night of cooking down maple sap into mrple syrple. Hot and steamy in the sugar shack. Nice bunch of folks. Tuned into the puter just in time for the middle of the eighth. Stuck around for the first two outs in the bottom of the inning.

Yesterday, i’d remarked that maybe either Hanson or Bumgarner would get back on the beam. It was the wrong one. Weird, but Madison has pitched pretty well this season, but has been haunted by one bad inning. It is something he will work through. Hope it’s sooner. Now as for that Jekyll and Hyde hitting…

Timmy against Hudson in an hour. Liking those odds a bit better, particularly if those %$^^& hitters can give Hudson the early dousing which has been his bete noir so far this season. Get the early edge and we win. Nice formula. Worked last year. Happening so far this season.

I choose to remain uberPolly about the Giants, but am not averse to pointing out flaws as i see them. Biggest flaw right now is a lack of consistency at the plate. Biggest plus is that stalwart bullpen. In something like 6 innings last night they give up exactly two hits and a single BB. Now that’s dominant.

The recipe won’t be that different from last year. When it’s said and done, they’ll pitch about the same and hit better. I have little concern about Tejada offensively but his defense is becoming brutal. Fontenot is no answer, Crawford is hurt, and Burriss was dreadful in the field this spring. Don’t know how long they’ll hang with Miggy.Certainly not long if he doesn’t start hitting..

From AP write-up, good thing Dirrrrrty has until tomorrow to get better and avoid the broom: “Giants Sunday starter Jonathan Sanchez was fighting a flu bug that required him to receive an IV for dehydration, but manager Bruce Bochy expected the left-hander to make his start.”

Despite the RBIs, Huff is a far bigger concern than the Gamer. They got more from Rowand than expected. We can hope that Aubrey is just starting slow again but he has a history of Good Aubrey/Bad Aubrey from year to year.

Looking like Torres won’t rejoin the club until the next home stand at the earliest. That’s a shitload of ABs for Rowand in the meantime. We might have to trade for a SS and CF.

We aren’t trading for a SS. It’s still fucking April. The Giants would start by giving Font a few games at SS and letting Miggs “clear his head”. Depending on how Font does, and how Miggs does during this time, maybe they trade for a guy in June if both of them flounder.

I’m not worried about Huff for a second. Forget the one on/one off bullshit. This guy was built for ATT, the same way Uribe was. Uribe left for browner pastures. Huff will be fine when this year is all said and done…..

Huff hit two linedrives right at outfielders. Bad breaks.

Bonds woulda made it in without the steroids. Clemens as well. The rest? Probably not. Palmiero is the one I’m on the fence about. McGwire? No way. Same deal with Sosa.

Oh well. Bonds sealed his fate. None of them are getting in.

We have a SS who can’t field, and a 2B who can’t throw. Other than that our middle infield is pretty spiffy.
