A Road Trip that Looks Worse than it Is + Jose Reyes Talk
We’ve played 8 games on this trip though Pitt/Washington/New York. It feels like we’re 0-12. Yet that can’t be since we’ve only played 8. Hmmmm. Looking it up, we are somehow playing .500 ball. That’s insane to me. If we can throw up .500 ball playing like *this* then I really like our chances once we get this thing right.
DeRosa is excited about his wrist and that all but assures that Tejada will start to see a lot of bench time once he comes of the DL. I’m fine with that, let’s ride DeRosa till that wrist snaps clean off. I’m going to hate to see Ford go back down. Despite my strong bias against dudes with neck tats, I really enjoy what he brings to this team…..
I could barely make it through the KNBR morning idiots this morning on the way to work. They seem to think it would take a kings ransom to acquire Reyes. That’s simply not true. Any player in the final year of their deal isn’t going to cost as much as the same player who is locked up. We could pick him up for a couple of prospects. the only thing Mac and Idiot got correct is that Reyes is a brittle player who could hit the DL several times this year with not much more than a hang nail. No thank you……
They also felt that Sabean would give Tejada till the end of June to prove if he can still play or not. Again, wrong. Tejada’s time might be up as soon as DeRosa shows he’s healthy enough to play……
The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings
(Pawlie bumps it back over 100 just to show us he’s still paying attention, GH and Tizzle free fall and Ed’s not seeing red for yet another day in a row…….)

agree flav. when I heard the gmen were 4-4, I was like that’s not bad at all, considering their horrendous play! nice to pull out that win in ny last night, who would’ve thought Nate and font would come up big…I also want to see de rosa contribute. I think he has maybe a couple weeks in him of good plan and then inflamed wrist again…he’ll be the Edgar of 2011! give us a boost here and there…do believe that he’ll be traded if he can prove wrist will hold up!
on another note: I like Reyes, but not for wheeler or dirty…now, he he agrees to an extension in the trade and wheeler goes, no prob, but, then what do we do with b. Crawford?? I guess reyes could move to 2nd when Freddy is done after next year…all spec. of course!
I rode Vogelsong one too many games…
But if you recall a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had heard that the Giants had beeen discussing Jose Reyes with the Mets.
Flav then accused me of gathering that info with conversations I was having with myself. Now that may be true that I spend too much time talking to myself, but that odd ball Mychal Urban wrote that the Giants are in fact discussing the possibility of trying to obtain Reyes and interestingly enough, the Mets may not be asking for a Jonathan Snachez or Cain in return because of their precarious finacial position, just as I had speculated.
So can I now get my props?
One thing I loved last night was the speed of Burriss and Ford getting on base and the speed to get around to second and third. I forgive Rowand for the foul pop, but that fucker Tejada is totally wearing on me!!! Let’s give Burriss and Ford some starts!!!
1) Ford – CF
2) Franchez – 2B
3) Fontenot – 3B
4) Posey – C
5) Huff – 1B
6) Rowand – LF
7) Ross – RF
8) Burriss – SS
Ugh, Burris’ defense at 2nd is shaky enough.
Being down 4 games to Colo considering all the injuries and the schedule…looks pretty good from here if they can get healthy.
Bad road trips? Last yr there was of course the 1-5 trek down south in April. Then they had the 7 game stretch in May where they dropped 6 games facing the Padres, D-backs and the A’s. Oakland swept our sorry arses, allowing just 1 run in 3 games.
Huff’s jack will be a turning point.
No way they trade for Reyes without getting an extension done, but we are probably talking 7 years around $17 mill. We can debate if he is worth it, I am not completely sold either, but we ahve very limited options for short for the future. One thing about payroll, we only have one more year of Rowand and two full years of Zito left, so we have the ability to strike a 7-year type of deal for Reyes…
Who knows if Crawford will actually be able to hit and it seems we have possibly better prospects coming up at second that would preclude needing to move Reyes to second…go Giants Sweep!
Would love to see Reyes, Ford and our #1 pick last year as top of the order hitters for the next 6-7 years…
They aren’t giving a guy like Reyes 7 freaking yrs.
The worst AB that inning was Buster’s: bases loaded, catcher can’t catch, can’t swing first pitch there. Don’t post dumb LUs this early, it gives me indigestion..
Off to SF, pre-procedure appt with the doctor. I’ll be back this afternoon, then back for the Gamma tomorrow.
As I said last night- early season MVP-MOTA!!
Reyes rumor has been live for a while, but I just don’t see the point. Yes, you would need to have an agreement on a contract extension, but for $17 mil you are talking 2- 3 yrs. tops.
I’m just not sold on signing a guy with his injury history until he shows he can hold up for a full season. His game is his legs; sure he looks great now, but before I went all in on him I’d want to see more evidence, he can stay healthy and maintain level of play. Plus, that his d and his tude can hold up too.
Failing to even attempt a steal last night as the tying run, two down bottom of 9th, is just baffling to me. Wonder what his teammates thought of him not running to get into scoring position.
Injury prone players are useless.
The last thing they want is another Zito Rowand on their hands. Any FA signings will be limited to 2 yrs, imo. They still have to lock up Lincecum, Cain and have Pablo and Sanchez due arb …then Posey in a few yrs.
Even renting Reyes would come at a steep price. Alderson is no Littlefield. Would want a Wheeler or Culberson and a few others.
Reyes numbers, while still quite good for a SS in this market, have taken quite a tumble from his heyday…compare 2010 to Angel Pagan. They are almost equal across the board, for OB, steals (Pagan had more last year), slugging and OPS.
few years ago he was stealing 50-60 bases, and hitting more HRs (11 last year), and his OB/OPS were higher too. I realize they are in a big yard, but the doubles and triples aren’t any higher either. How much would you pay for Angel Pagan?
the Giants aren’t trading for Reyes. First of all, Sabean doesn’t do deals in early May. And secondly, as some of you have pointed out and the idiots on the KNBR morning show don’t understand, there’s no way you hand over the farm system for a guy in the final year of his deal and the Giants would have no interest in signing him long term….
Reyes is too big of a risk and it’s ridiculous to pay him a long term contract along the lines of what GH thinks he is worth. Key moment last night – Mr. Bling Bling (Reyes) latching on his jewelry right before a pitch to a Giants batter. Asshole should had his head in the game and stuffed his jewelry inside his pocket.
This told me all I need to know about Mr. Reyes.
Giants players – unlike flappers – ONLY worry about who is at the dance right now. They don’t think about what they can’t control (trades). Same thing goes for Sabes . . . He wont even think about trades/deals until after the All Star game and then, only if it benefits the team. Sheesh, it isn’t like we are in last place.
Personally, if you want to get a shortstop – my preference is for someone like Jed Lowrie of Boston. This guy has been absolutely hot, albeit, he has cooled off as of late. Nevertheless, Lowrie was due to regress to the mean, but fortunately for him, the mean is pretty high. He’s still batting .342 with a .915 OPS on the year, and if he regresses all the way to his .287 batting average and .907 OPS of a year ago, you’ll certainly take that from a shortstop. Plus, he has the ability to play all over the infield, which assures he’ll continue to play every day.
Boston is pitching starved and I suspect they would listen to the Giants (who are pitching rich). However, again – IT IS WAY TOO SOON TO BE TALKING TRADES.
Flav is righ, I was listening to the boys on KNBR on the way in from work with Kruk on with them. Kruk said no GM does big trades in May, July 1-31 is when all big trades happen. Tejada is done though, he needs to be replaced, Offense and Defense is just about dead. There has to be someone on the farm who can do at least as good as Tejada, and get better with time. Where as because of his age Tejada is just getting worse. IMO. GO GIANTS
Just had a look at the schedule. Timing would be good if the Huff dinger gets the bats warmed up a bit. Two more with the Mets and then home cooking hosting the Rox and the Snakes. Some more road warrior stuff and the Florida comes to town and then its off to Milwaukee and St. Louis. So the short term competitors look like a much easier row to hoe than those towards the end of the month. Slump continues and things could get brutalitarian as May progresses.
June looks like a whole nother matter. By and large the schedule includes a nice amount of Bayside games and generally the level of competition does not look particularly scary.
Whatever happens at shortstop, the call to Fresno for a return to Belt’s services will likely happen before this month is up. As noted here previously, Belt was fouling off a lot of pitches early in the count on his first swing through the circuit. Likely reason was a bit more movement on ML fastballs than what he has been seeing in AAA. He makes that micro-adjustment and Brandon rakes.
If this team can play bad ball and yet hang on at a .500 clip in road games against admittedly mediocre teams; a much improved roster featuring Torres, DeRosa, Belt and later Sandoval should be able to do some cruising as we segue into Summer. The quality pitching is already there and it is likely to improve with a bit of support. We may have already witnessed the nadir of the season in that four-game-four-run Washington series.
Interesting night in the NL West. Broxton, on to pitch the 9th in a tie game at home (hello del mar) gets one out, walks two guys on 8 pitches, and Mattingly pulls him for Hawksworth (huh?), who gives up a two run double to Soto and another hit, cubs win 4-1. Hmmm, wonder how that went over.
Rox pen gets beat in the 8th as F. Paulino and his 6.10 ERA give up a HR to Justin Upton on a 3-0 count. gibson said he has the green light, and the kid rewards his judgment with an opposite field whack in AZ. Rox 0-6 with RISP.
Lovable Pirates take a 5-3 lead into bottom of 7th after scoring 3 times off the Pads Gregersen, then give it all back in two innings to lose 6-5 as Adams and Bell close them out.
Speaking of pens, what is up with Runzler? What do you do when Casilla comes off the DL?
Willie: My thought is that Casilla is on the trade bubble and that Runzler may have one or two more opportunities before he gets demoted back to Fresno, with either Edlefsen or Kroon getting the call. If trading for a shortstop is seen as a must then Casilla, possibly Runzler (a loogie with a huge potential upside) and maybe Nate become markers. Schierholtz, incidentally, is now batting at better than a .300 clip and is making a case either for bringing some value in a trade or getting more regular playing time.
craziest moment in a delightfully crazy game — bottom of the 9th, bases loaded (intentionally) and Lopez slings the first pitch at Thole’s back leg, and Thole jumps out of the way.
Xoot, besides Reyes doing his makeup and jewelry, you’re absolutely right about Thole . . . Dipshit should have taken one for the team and got hit, thus winning the game. Instead, his head was up his ass too.
So what if DeRosa is “excited” about his wrist. Let’s see him play 3 or 4 days straight, and then see how excited he is about it. I have zero confidence that he’s going to give SF anything much this season. As I said before, they have to fish or cut bait with him. Put him in the fire, if that risk flares again, you can’t waist a roster spot on a guy that can only play once every few days, and has no pop in the bat when he does play. In that case, back to the DL or cut him, and get a healthy body in that is available every game….
Yeah!
The Mets are in serious financial trouble. They’ve taken major dough from MLB already and most of the information hasn’t even really come out. When Madoff is a close pal the end game can’t be good. There is a chance that Reyes could be had for next to nothing this year just to unload salary for a club that probably won’t do much but that won’t be until later this summer. Torres , Reyes, Sandoval, Posey sure would be a nice looking 1-4 though.
Hard to see it happening despite Haft’s grasping for relevance with this “breaking news”. Initially I liked some of his writing but the more I see the less I like the guy. That dude is even more annoying than a neck tat. .
Giants should pass.
Hanley, already under contract, might be a better option. The Marlins will trade anyone, anytime, anywhere. But the Mets have to get something for Reyes and Beltran. Maybe Jose falls in love with SF the way McGwire did STL. That nonsense aside, a cheap alternative who I always liked is Jeff Keppinger.
I wouldn’t trade for Hanley. He had a very un-Hanley-like season last year and he’s playing about as shitty as he could possibly play to start this year. The days of 30 sb’s are over. If he’s not a 30/30 guy I’m not really interested in trying to catch that falling knife…….
There’s something very liberating about not having to look ahead to a Zito start…
Rainy, mid-50’s here today, but the game doesn’t appear to be in doubt. Might take a ride up. It would be a sin not to see my team in person as reigning World Champs…
Reigning, raining, either way
Loo, I’m visiting the SF bay area (family and friends) for the next few weeks and my cuz bought tickets for him and I, along with a few other people we know for Saturday May 7, vs. Rockies @ 6:05 Giveaway is a World Series Canvas Print (additionally, he is promising me a greet and meet/photo with Tulowitski); Thursday May 12, vs. Diamondbacks @ 12:45; Sunday May 22, vs. Oakland A’s @ 1:05 Giveaway is a World Series Pennant (love the fact that it is during the A’s visit). Additionally, we are hitting a San Jose Giants game while I am here.
This is the link to a 3d view of our seats for all of the games: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/sf/ballpark/seats_3d.jsp
Our Seats are in Section 126 Row 39 for each game . . . Fricking amazing the technology they are coming up with.
Sounds nice, Blade. I’ll be visiting scenic Flushing, NY on the #7 train (the one that John Rocker so accurately described a few years ago). A solitary black & orange midget….
“Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you’re riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing.”
Add a black and orange midget whose shades appear to be staring at you for the entire trip, and you would have an entertaining time.
Loo, you are packing heat, right?
I’ll just miss you blade. I got tickets for the Marlins game on the 25th
Ted or anyone else . . . If by chance you are going to the games I indicated above, give me a shout . . . A beer has your name on it if we meet up 🙂
Counting on DeRosa for anything is ludicrous. He’s played in what, 35 games in 1¼ seasons with the Giants? 35 out of a possible 190 games?
That’s a .184 game attendance average. Those numbers are way worse than Renteria’s.
He’s excited? Good for him. He’s 36 going on retired. Counting on him for anything more than a back up role is false hope.
In my mind he is retired.
Andre Ethier has been scratched from the Dodgers’ lineup with left elbow inflammation.
I guess getting all those hits wears out your elbow. Either that or he’s been hangin’ with Broxton. Notice to Flapper FL players: He’s all yours. I just dropped that fat fuck faster than Roseanne downs a bag of donuts.
Dennis wore out his elbow the old fashion way……at the bar.
Broxton’s getting his elbow MRI’d today, I hear. Wonder how the budget cuts in dodger land have affected the clubhouse, the training and medical staff, etc.?
No effect at all Xoot . . . I understand a Voodoo Witch Doctor, as well as an Indian Shaman were immediately made available to Broxton.
Well, I hear they are using candles and leeches instead of x-rays and MRI’s.
pretty sweet line Brandon Lyon threw up there today. Talk about a closer who needs to be relieved of his job…..
In my other league, I have Cordero, who pitched one inning and got the win in that game Flav . . . almost highway robbery. I think Dirt got the same benefit in the Flap League.
Codero came through with the unlikely W bit I’ll take it. The Reds either win or lose big with not much in between. Seems like Cordero rarely get in the game. I don’t know, maybe I need more relievers.
Just brass knuckles, Blade..
Enjoy the game, Loo.
CF Rowand, 2B Sanchez, SS Fontenot, C Posey, 1B Huff, LF Burrell, RF Schierholtz, 3B Tejada, P Lincecum
Timmy Tim needs to get on the beam today, He’s had a couple less-than-Timmy outings lately.
Ross gets a much needed mental health day off . . .
yes, Loo. I’m bummed the weather sucks as that has to impact your down blouse/up skirt watch. Oh well, you might actually see some of the game this time
Torres update from Schulman: “Torres to start rehab in FAT (Fresno) tomorrow. He does not feel ready, so he might not be activated Friday.”
Fun seeing Lincecum blow hitters away with the 95 FB again.
Big night predicted for Burrrell.
Good call! I bet you didn’t think it would be with the D, though!
Huff seems to be getting his shit together
70-plus pitches thru 4. Timmy’s not long for this one.
TF has committed before about Lincecum’s bunting problems.
“commented”, I meant to spell.
I guess it doesn’t matter, if Rowand is going to do THAT.
Font has taken big advantage of his playing time.
Not seeing a whole lot of 1-2-3 innings from Lincecum these days.
Just got in from another woodcutting expedition, just in time to see the Giants grab that huge 1-0 lead. Bochy decided to stick with the Ace. After all, who the fuck is on the bench.
Major Houdini act. No wonder Bochy stuck with his Ace. K’s when he need em.
shiite
Font yeah!
Curly Joe adds one Mo.
DJLoo, hope you take the 7 train, as have I dozens of times. In ’79 or ’80, I met a guy, nick, who worked at the Eighth Ave. PO and lived near the old Polo Grounds; had seen every Giants game in town since the Thirties; has passed away.
Magnus,
Good post. This trip feels like 0-12 and 92 years long, in slo-mo. Yet somehow we can still come home w/ a winning trip. Weird.
I’m done w/ Tejada. And watching Reyes last night, yeah, it’d be real nice to have him. Oh yeah.
Signed,
Grampy Kokonuts
Congrats, Grampy!
thanks, Zumie — vocative comma, too!
p.s. Darren Ford has to stay up, somehow, some way.
Timmy’s in the groove!
Unless my memory glands have sagged beyond hope, Timmy’s dozen K’s in this game have just broken his tie with HOF all-time great Giant Ace Christy Mathewson for most games with ten or more strikeouts. Congrats, Freak!!! Keep on Tokin.
Seems the set up guys are usually getting the heart of the order.
Darren Ford is having his Eugenio Velez moment. Lopez, Romo . . . .
Mets’ announcers, including Keith Hernandez and Yale-educated Ron Darling, giving major props to Giants’ pitching, esp. bullpen. Well, Timmeh too, of course. Last night they marveled over Wilson pitching 9 strikes for a save last year against the Mets.
Nice win tonight. And no 9th inning drama to boot. Very nice. Must’ve been the luck Loo brought ’em tonight.
Somebody buy that half pint a fifth.
I gotta say- winning is a lot better than losing! I like winning!
Maybe talk to you guys tomorrow from UCSF- not sure because last time they gave me Ativan by IV. Nice game, sleep well…
all the best to ya
And to you, Gramps..
Back to .500 baseball with 30 games played. Guess what? Even a loss tomorrow would make for a .500 road trip. A winner and the trip is a success ~ a bit muted as these are bottom dwelling teams and the Gigantes should have cleaned house. But it is the road and with the injuries and the sputtering offense, wins are wins are wins.
Hey Gramps! It must be nice to hear out of town game commentators bragging up the pitching. That 3-man setup squad has ERA’s so low that microscopes are challenged. What was it? 16 K’s or something along those lines tonight. Yowzaa. Now if Buster can break out like Huff appears to have done, that home-cooking against division rivals could be not only tasty but good for you too.
Yahoo has a feature pointing out the Giants weaknesses. The tune may change pretty fast if a couple more bats awaken.
holy shit flav…bad news for your facebook page…vencadores los tiburones!
Willied, I think you meant vengadores los tiburones 🙂
yeah thx. when I was san jose state late 70s, one wild guy in my history seminar class was talking up “Venceremos” group. For the winner, you can also use ganador, right?
Yes
Land sharks?
Setoguchi!
Ahhhh! Forgot the Sharks were going tonight. Too much going on today . . .
Finally finished watching the tape of the Giants game.
Timmy Tim found his groove. Franchez had the play of the week . . .
DVR, but you know what I mean . . .
Not only are we now 5-4 on this trip, despite the hitting, but with LA’s loss, we’ve moved into 2nd place. Let’s sweep tomorrow!
You guys don’t know how good you’ve got it with Miller, Flemming, Kruk and Kuip–I mean I get them too on GameDay Audio. But making dinner tonight, I listened to the O’s broadcast where Joe Angel completely missed calling a close play at the plate on a sac fly. I know this because he nonchalantly describes the flyball and catch and run scoring, then tells you ‘Roberts had to slide because the play was close at the plate.’ Huh? Delivered in a monotone and not even bothering to name the outfielder, just referring to him as ‘the outfielder,’ which is rather common with him. His sidekick, Fred Manfra, is whitebread serviceable. The Nats’ team might be worse; Charlie Slowes’ nasal voice and sloppy enunciation sends me into my own version of Mary Hart Syndrome. His sidekick Jagler is Manfra’s match. When the Nationals arrived in 2005, Slowes had Dave Shea alongside him, who had a sense of humor and could be a bit cynical. This, of course, could not stand.
Good luck tomorrow, Twin.
Hey Ed! Welcome back . . . .
I thought FP Santangeloid was doing games out there. I guess he’s the TV guy.
As they say, keep on keeping on, Mike.
2 flaps up tomorrow, Twin…….
“Timmy Tim found his groove. Franchez had the play of the week . . .”
Sorry Fruckie, Flavor gave that to Loo…
Comes the 9th inning rally. Bases get loaded in the process, but also there are outs recorded: Huff, Tejada and Posey. Game over.
