A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Making a Case For Pat Burrell

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 10, 2011

Seems like we’ve talked about this before. I love The Bat but it’s hard to ignore the looming presence of Brandon Belt who continues to blast the ball all across the PCL. But when you look at Burrell’s numbers it just doesn’t make sense that he’s the guy who sits down right now. He’s still leading the team in HR’s, he’s 3rd in runs scored and his OPS is still over .800. That’s not a guy who you sit down for a guy who is still a *maybe* at this point in his career. It’s frustrating because our offense needs a kick right now. Mike Fontenot can only carry a team so far (batting him third was a cute little side story, and it’s worked up to this point, but this is all going to end soon, and not in a good way)…..

Basically, The Bat hasn’t done anything to lose his gig and he’s producing at a much greater rate than many hitters earning the same dough (and he’s certainly producing at a better rate of return than MANY players making 10 times what he makes).

I’d love to see Belt get a 2nd go-around. I just don’t see it happening at this point in the season. Maybe after June 1. Now, if only Belt could start taking some games at short stop 🙂

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

(Me and tizzle share the daily gas mask as we drop 3.5 pts each and….OMG!…rarer than a double rainbow, Berra’s Bombers gain the most daily pts of any team with a 2 pt jump in the standings. He’s at 19 pts and about to start picking off teams faster than Arazi picked off horses in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile low those many years ago)…..

As a guy pointed out over on the Splash, Belt’s Fresno splits suggest some mortal vulnerabilities amid the Achillean achievements. He’ll be back, but it’d be unreasonable to expect Posey impact. Meanwhile, I think Fontenot will move around in the batting order and continue to contribute just fine. Here are the stats the guy on the Splash was reviewiing:

I think Pat still gets in there a few times a week…he hits better at ATT than on the road, and has hit all his HRs vs. RHP. Surprised to see Nate get a couple starts vs. Rox, but that 0-4 plus ross heroics probably means way less of that. I think everyone gets a day off except Torres.
I was also surprised Burriss didn’t get a start , with maybe Font playing 3B. Guess he becomes the des PR now. Until he stops raking, I’d leave Font at SS, where he has made some nice plays, tho I’m sure his days of batting third are over. This has got to be the last shot for deRosa…either he can hit and play, somewhere, or he can’t.

Buirrell hasn’t homered since April 18th. He’s driven in 2 runs since that HR.

He’s the opposite of on fire.

Granted, no one is really scalding the ball, but he’s cold as ice.

BLEEP PAC Coast League stats! I don’t put much stock in minor league ball. Belt has a lot to prove and perhaps he will not be much of a factor this season for the Giants. So what? The Giants have plenty of bats now. Just be patient.

  6. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 10, 2011 at 8:21 am

Yeah, the DeRosa deal is getting old. If he can last longer than a week, and get the ball out of the infield, bully for him. But, truth be told, Ford brings more to the table than DeRosa.

    • Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on May 10, 2011 at 8:33 am

DeRosa would be replaced with another infielder. Ford has to supplant Nate.

Torres LF, Rowand CF and Ross RF is not the worst way to start tonight’s game. Move Ross to LF late, if it’s wise to give Torres a short night, and use Schierholtz in RF. That leaves Ford as the final D OF. Burrell can PH. I know Burrell doesn’t like to hit off the bench. He fucked himself out of a job in Tampa as a result, I think. He needs to make an effort to get over that now.

The “mortal vulnerabilities” post is a total crock-read it. He hits worse behind in the count? What a shock! And based on what? 100 AB? 50? No- ELEVEN. Hitting just .250 against lefies! Wow, he’s 3 for 12…stoopid.
As far as Pat, he’ll be battling for playng time whether Belt is up or not. The walks are swell but a middle of the order hitter does have to, well, hit. Oh, wait, Belt is not ready because he’s 2 for 11 behind in count? Pat is 5-34. He’s 2-19 w/RISP. He can’t run and he’s a poor defender. He ONLY has value if he’s driving in runs. Period.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on May 10, 2011 at 9:25 am

Belt’s hitting in Fresno, twinfan, not SF. Make the adjustment. And don’t just look at the two numbers the guy on the Splash pointed out. Compare his current pace to last year, at the minor league level. There’s consistency — there. Glad to see you aren’t sleeping late. 😉

Maybe, but a lot of guys had crummy aprils. I thought he should have stayed, but maybe it was for the best he went down and now he’ll contribute more than others upon return. Belt could wind up being a pretty complete player. Plays a nice 1B too, better d than Huff, whose shelf life could be limited.

      • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 10, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Burrell is notorious for going into deep slumbers at times.

No, last season I was in favor of bringing Posey north from ST, chuckles. Do you just shout when you have nothing pertinent to say? With both DeRosa and Torres coming back now, and with Rowand and Fontenot contributing, there’s a surfeit of options. It’ll be interesting to see how Bochy makes the most of it. Somehow adding Belt into the mix, right now, doesn’t seem like the smart thing to do. Eventually, yeah. But Ross wasn’t here until the second half last year; Burrell came along mid season. There’s plenty of tmie for things to shift and to improve. So you go fuck Rowand/Burrell seriously for a few weeks and then check back.

chuckles, I posted the “he’s not the answer” comment from the hospital while I was watching a guy wrap Giants black on a short arm cast. Very nice craftsmanship. At the time, I thought the comment was consistent with my position all day: Belt is good, and has to come back up, but, this year, don’t expect him to be great. Now that I’ve looked things over, I see that I was right. Why don’t you take a few moments, compose a thought or two, and then put on your eye black and souvenir 49er helmet and try again.

Giants hit into almost one double play every game (.95) last year, and so far this season, they are on a similar pace (.85). Mr. “Squat-at-bat” has hit into quite a few of those and thank you kindly for the quasi-production while Torres was out, but it’s back to the pine for the $13.5 million dollar man.

Take away Freddy Sanchez and Mike Fontenot and we would be in big heap of trouble. Thank our lucky stars that Ross is back (responsible for all 3 runs Sunday). Hopefully, he can keep it up. Posey and Huff also need to do better than the 35 ribbies and 7 jacks between them. Bochy has done an admirable job of mixing and matching line-ups and will have to continue to do so for the immediate future. Personally, I would like to see Belt up here as soon as possible, i.e., when Sabes/brain trust feels he has learned everything he needs to learn in Triple A.

Meanwhile, all is hunky dory on the good ship Giants . . . Remember, it’s early May and we are only a game or so back from 1st place. Me likee.

A little pre-game test: A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met a guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing. She believed him to be her dream guy so much that she fell in love with him right there, but
never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later
    she killed her sister..

Question: What is her motive for killing her sister?

I like the LU– No Tejada–all good. No Burrell? Whatev, he’s not really hitting much right now anyway. Over the course of the year, you get what you get from The Bat and that would be one of our top OPS guys, maybe our HR leader. But when he’s going cold it’s a good idea to sit him. I’m also growing tired of the Font in the 3rd slot but not enough to go ballistic over it. He can hit there till he stops hitting there. Maybe by then Huff will have started hitting……..

I get that DeRosa could slide over there if he goes down, Font could too. But I like Font at SS right now. Leave him there. And I am hoping to like DeRosa at 3rd (at least until that wrist snaps clean off)……..

Before you gripe too much about Fontenot, let it be known that on this date 5 years ago our #3 hitter was Mark Sweeney. He was replacing Lance Niekro, who would return the following day. One week earlier it was Todd Greene.

  48. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 10, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Surprised they shipped off Burriss, not Ford. Maybe his less than stellar D a time or two, and lack of hitting and bunting turned the tide. Anyway, they must either believe DeRosa is healed, or they’re going to play him until / unless his wrist goes south again, which I suggest they do. As I said before, now you gotta play DeRosa like he’s supposed to play — the super utility guy. If he can’t, and goes back to playing one game a week, then in the trainer’s room for 6 games, that is unacceptable, and some LT move should be made with him…

  49. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 10, 2011 at 5:59 pm

I think I would have guessed Fielder too. And I would have disagreed, I thought that choreographed HR celebration was hilarious. I don’t recall anyone on AZ that got DennIS that pissed off but who knows? DennIS is known to say things in the heat of the moment that might be a skosh away from a reasonable response to a situation 🙂

  50. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on May 10, 2011 at 6:01 pm

I agree that DeRosa is a big story right now. It would be absolutely huge if he’s healthy enough to finally contribute with Panda out and Tejada playing so badly. I know we’re collectively not real optimistic about that actually happening, but it would be a helluva nice bonus if it did.

Who was Dennis referring to? Matt Kemp mayhaps?

  51. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 10, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Until/if Fontenot becomes unacceptable at SS, DeRosa and Tejada should share third.
As to Burriss, a misplay per game in the field is unacceptable.
Things went quite poorly with Fontenot this weekend, eh?
They probably want to wait until the road trip to DFA Pat- they don’t want him busting up their own clubhouse 😉

  52. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 10, 2011 at 6:10 pm

Well, I’m glad DeRosa’s healthy but I’m not going to expect the return of the prodigal son. Like Rowand, the Giants signed him after a couple peak years after he’d already been a 10 year veteran. Just good solid hitting and defense is all I would ask

I like Fontenot, I have never not liked him. I just don’t think a good team over the course of 162 has him batting 3rd. Huff needs to start hitting again (and he IS hitting balls hard, often foul, but still) and Font can moonwalk on down to the 7 or 8 spot………

  55. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 10, 2011 at 6:27 pm

And I’ll say this, I don’t think there was ever a better trade deadline/August pick up list of unheralded players than what Sabes did last year. Off the top of my head he got Lopez, Ramirez, Ross, Fontenot, Guillen…am I missing anyone? That’s a pretty amazing haul when you consider we gave up less than jackshit for those guys (i only included Guillen for the list, not production. He won exactly one game for us otherwise Ross should have played every game in place of him. I will go to my grave believing Bochy bank-shot the Cody Ross hit. He never would have played him if it weren’t for Guillen’s wife getting busted)…………

  56. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 10, 2011 at 6:31 pm

I seriously doubt that there are any plans to keep him in the three. A totally baseless concern…

Now, having said that, I will admit to to Bochy bashing in non-baseball areas.

I believe I’ve mentioned that huuuuge heed of his with its own weathersystem.

    “Pat is 5-34. He’s 2-19 w/RISP . . . He ONLY has value if he’s driving in runs. Period.”

Of course, if Burrell produced an 809 OPS over 500 PAs, these arguments would be exposed as the specious bullshit they are. If you want to make the case that Burrell can’t maintain that OPS over an entire season that’s one thing; the selective use of contingent stats to write off a player’s offensive value is dishonest.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 10, 2011 at 8:25 pm

If he puts up an 809 OPS over an entire season, he will drive in and score plenty of runs. There is no argument to be made there. As it is, right now he has seen significantly fewer runners on base and in scoring position than other players with the same number of PAs.

SF starters may have improved a bit, but continue to go AWOL when runner is on first, allowing walking lead and EZ steals. I put most on the starter, obviously, but there’s got to be some culpability on Posey as well as the coaches. Coaches can get the catcher’s attention to getting the pitcher to pay attention and throw over there if the pitcher gets in a zone and forgets the runner. If Rags is working on this in the bullpen offday sessions, it still is getting lost when the starters get into the real games…
