A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Ho Hum, Another Walk Off Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 7, 2011

I missed most of the game but I see the bullpen was lights out with 8 innings of no run ball. In fact, the last 10 innings we pitched were shut out innings. I ran out of adjectives a long time ago to describe the heart and soul of this team…

Do you think the Nats are looking forward to getting another shot at Dirrrrrty today? He put up one of the weirder lines of the season the last time he pitched against them: 5 innings, 6 walks, 7 k’s, 0 ER’s. I think he is probably going to steamroll them today–that loss last night had to have taken a little wind out of their sail…….

Only 2 teams (Philly and St Louis)  in all of baseball have won more games than us and no one in the American League has more victories. Bizarre……

Zito had a good line last night. No surprise, a bunch of single A batters aren’t going to the plate to coax a walk out of him (he walked nobody). I bet all the Ports batters went up their wide eyed and aggressive trying to get a hit off a former CY-for most of them, that’s as close as they’ll ever get to facing one again…….

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

(there’s a new sheriff in town, at least patrolling the dregs of the standings. Berra’s Bombers, once so low they had a point total of 12, have risen from the ashes and planted a flag at the top of Mount 13! Giant head makes a monster 12 point move and No Talent clings to his once great lead)

Somehow they eke out wins. Yes, Flav, it is the pen. They keep up this pace and it could go down as one of the most incredible relief corps in baseball history. Nats made threats on em, but they bailed each other out when need be.

Who can neglect Freddy Sanchez for coming through time and again. That little guy’s got spunk. Biggest flop of the night, barring Timmy’s recent taste of last August, had to be Pat the Bat, who miserably struck out in a key p.h. role in the bottom of the ninth. At least it was a tie game at the time. But his coming through would have saved on that stellar BP. On the other hand, Nate came through nicely in a similar role an inning earlier. Last, but not least, mr. batting stance cranked out his second dinger of the year to get the team off the schnoid and on the board.

Check out the personal stats and you will find nary a Giant high on the leader boards, except for Wilson in saves. Even Lincecum, face of the franchise, has hit a rough stretch. None of the hitters is even close in any category. Yet, the Giants at 34-26 top the West, hanging tight with the Phillies and Cards atop the league.

WOW, I was joking with Blade that I was going from the bottom tier to the middle tier…3 wins and a save in one day and I think sub 1.00 ERAs and WHIPS…the Head is back and I am not talking about Anthony Weiner (whom I have had to deal with in the past and actually a good congressman)!!!

Couple more weeks and here I come to the Top Tier!!!

Unlike the Flap, my money league I had Lincecum, Tomlin adn CJ Wilson start yesterday..frickin hell as frozen over disaster…..I was at that JSanchez game here earlier this year and learned that my Firm seats behind home plate come with free beer all game long till the 7th, so to say the least, I was giving it ang getting it with the Nats fans all day and my Gigantes let me down…pay back! I was asleep by the 5th and down 4-0 last night, shocked when I was back awake around @:30 to see the Giants still playing, of course quickly bnack asleep and missed the whole damn ending…go Giants!

Monta for Iguodala? I like it…MarcK Jackson? Not so much…

Incredible work by the ‘pen: only 4 H and 2 walks (one intentional) over 8 scoreless innings. Compare that to the Nats, who blew a late 4-0 lead for the second straight day. Unlike the Snakes, though, the Giants made ’em pay. And props to Stewart for getting a leadoff walk and scoring the game-winner, just the second time a Giants catcher has scored a run since Buster’s injury.

Great POTD by double MR, the dude was on last night. This one also cracked me up.

I hope baggs (and sabes) got a good look at pudge and his oh-fer last night. Pls, no on this guy.

Flavor, you said the kids were going to hammer ZitShit yesterday. I try to help, I really do. It was a given he’d do well yesterday, as I posted then..
Pawlie is right, BTW. While my “Gomez” bit was one of last year’s brilliant pieces, you guys are running it into the ground. Enough already.
And a reminder- Fruckie™ is mine, I’m being generous in allowing it’s usage. I checked with Bea, a real lawyer, and it’s still not in the public domain. Be sparing when you use it and I won’t charge..I’m taking a risk here because I’m fond of most of you, if I’m forced to re-register my mark, it will not go well for the thieves.
Why the Mark Jackson bullshit? You wanted one of the usual suspects? Oh, there’s another Van Gundy out there!!! Welcome aboard, Beth!
Tim has sucked because of the 130+ pitch outing? Aren’t Double-Doubles supposed to handle that? I’m kidding so don’t get all bent about little Timmy. What was the excuse last August? Anyway- the offense bailed him out so they’re 9-4 in his starts. Lately he’s making the mistakes that got Dirty the “Basket Case” label, that doesn’t have shit to do with his fucking pitch count against Oakland.

No doubt referring to the leadoff walk to Lannan that led to the 3-spot in the 3rd. Yes, Timmy has his “basket case” moments from time to time, and that was definitely one of them.

Usually working until 11 really blows but catching the tail end of an extra inning game makes it worth it.

F Sanchez has been holding down the 3 hole quite nicely. Great bare handed play in the field and hustle down the line on the fielders choice by Tejada last night.

    What a win!

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 10:02 am

  13. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 10:26 am

I didn’t have a problem with anything you said. All of you are too sensitive to my comments… anyway, lots of guys, including Buster on several occasions, DON”T hustle straight out of the box, they’ll intially “sag” with disappointment, all it takes to be out. So Tejada does deserve the extra credit, which you gave him.So I teased about the “stylin” nonsense, so what?

Bryce already has tried to obtain a trademark registration for his “HR Kiss Off” move, but the PTO turned him down and the TTAB rejected his appeal (citing, among other notable precedent, their decision to disallow Harley Davidson’s attempt to register their distinctive exhaust rumble (i.e., “Sound of a Hog”)). Arguably, Bryce has been using his “mark” in commerce (professional baseball games), and it has developed some secondary meaning (Bryce is a complete asshole), but even the government knows how to call bullshit bullshit.

Harper is already considered a total prick., Before he was drafted, BP”s evin Goldstein wrote this:
“This should not be underrated. It’s impossible to find any talent evaluator who isn’t blown away by Harper’s ability on the field, but it’s equally difficult to find one who doesn’t genuinely dislike the kid. One scout called him among the worst amateur players he’s ever seen from a makeup standpoint, with top-of-the-scale arrogance, a disturbingly large sense of entitlement, and on-field behavior that includes taunting opponents. “He’s just a bad, bad guy,” said one front-office official. “He’s basically the anti-Joe Mauer.”

Pudge is an upgrade over anything SF has right now, sure…but you could say that about at least 50 other guys currently employed as C in mlb. His offense has been going steadily downhill for a few years toward .600 something OPS, and even on this team he hits 8th. In 6 months he’ll be 40 yrs old….just an underwhelming choice to me. Since bochy and riggs are old buddies, maybe that allows for some kind of inside scoop on how he would fit in here with the PS, which would be most important factor to me. Maybe he replaces molina in the lincecum pantheon.
Bill James seemed bullish on his projections for this season.
And maybe he can renew acquaintances with JT.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 12:31 pm

There aren’t any “whelming” choices. Most underwhelming of all are our current guys. This could have been discussed on my “Catchers” page but there was no interest. Pudge is a fucking HOFer, he’ll bring more here than any fucking Doumit no matter what he hits. He might even, you know, block a ball or two..

      • willied's avatar willied said, on June 7, 2011 at 1:01 pm

he is a HOF c, no doubt. but at some point he retires because he can’t cut it anymore and no team wants to pay him. He might block a ball or two, or let them go by as well. Couple guys on this staff aren’t easy to catch. More talent than whiteside, no argument. The unknown is how he fits in with the SPs et al for the rest of the season. Might be more trouble than he is worth is my take. Or he might push the PS back to last year numbers and better.
I don’t think SF offense is going to approach last season, so SPs are going to have to pick it up and keep runs down. Is IR the best guy to help them do that behind the plate is what brain trust has to decide.

I didn’t much notice at first, but then I realized that they couldn’t agree among themselves how to pronounce their own name. Not all of the kids copped to “weener.” Most problematic, however, were the parents: the dad was a “weener,” the mother a “whiner.” I found myself in situations where I had to introduce them to other adults. After a while, the whole thing pissed me off and I used the opposite of what each adult wanted unless they were together; then, “weener” seemed right.

The Giants are all about ‘team.’ Rowand with the HR to get the Giants’ offense going, just when you think you can’t stand to watch another of his ABs. This team just keeps grinding. Affeldt willing to take the baseball in stress situations after struggling at other times. You gotta give credit to Bochy. He keeps all 25 guys believing they are a part of the thing, and then sure enough, any one of the 25 can be a hero in a given game. It all sounds like sports cliches, but when you actually see it happening, it’s one of the beautiful things about sports.

  38. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 7, 2011 at 2:24 pm

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on June 7, 2011 at 2:34 pm

Behind the closed door of Bochy’s office: “Barry, Vogelsong’s got the spot, you’re in the pen, long relief or spot starting if necessary. It’s that simple.”
On the Bruce Bochy show that evening: “We want Barry to build his innings up over time, not put too much strain on the foot until we’re sure it’s strong. It’s tough on him. He’s a competitor and he wants to come back roaring, and it’s tough on us too, because we need him down now. But we’ll need him down the stretch, too. So he’ll come back slow to be sure he comes back strong.”

Good post, Zooms. I was alluding a bit to the same observation in my opening comments this morning. No Giants on the leader boards, except our .38 Special has got to be there somewhere in the saves department ~ yet the team is highly competitive. Or should i have styled it the TEAM? Somebody is always picking a teammate up. Last night it was the guys in the Pen. Though from time to time i have my quibbles with him, measured over the course of a season Bochy is a master of blending the boys and mix and match throughout the roster. No manager can make all the calls perfectly, but Bruce has a lotta juice in that capacious cranium of his.

Interesting take is that not one Giant has had a hot streak of several games running yet all season. Huff looked to be emerging when in St. Louis, but maybe the cool, moist conditions around the Bay and the general vibe of PhoneBill Park brought him back down again. But he does keep on knocking in runs here and there. Burrell may be ready for a big glop of butter when Panda returns. He seems pretty well browned on both sides of the slice right now. Can’t seem to buy a base hit, draws the occasional walk, was hitting dingers and taters early on but now has slacked off. He needs to get it together in a big way and soon, otherwise that million bucks has already been amortized.

This team has had a taste of what it’s like to win all the marbles. Seems like they know they can do it again. Within a week or two, maybe much sooner, SF will have a bit more of a presence behind the plate. Wheels are turning. A middling good prospect, Fontenot, or a semi-surplus reliever should suffice for the swap.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 7, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Burrell couldn’t recognize pitches at all last night. He flinched on all the curveballs, and then when he guessed curveball, he ended up taking a fastball down the middle for strike three.

It’s the “Take A Night Off” LU:

    Torres CF
    Gillaspie 3B
    (F)Sanchez 2B
    Huff 1B
    Schierholtz RF
    Rowand LF
    Crawford SS
    Stewart C
    (J)Sanchez P

Huh. Almost looks like a ST lineup. Should be an interesting game

  45. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 4:31 pm

This year the LU bashing is really interesting because no LU is better or worse than any other. I guess you’re just keeping in practice.

  46. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 7, 2011 at 4:53 pm

I’m not really bashing. I just think starting Gillaspie, Crawford and Stewart is an interesting choice

    • That's *mr* mrbill to you!'s avatar That's *mr* mrbill to you! said, on June 7, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Nor am I bashing — I genuinely think some of the moves are for well-deserved rest — and JSanchez is gonna have to put in some serious innings to spell the relief a bit. Last night’s endeavour was not so much a game, as it was a — relationship!

  47. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Agreed Twin. Without buster and Pablo in there they ALL look underwhelming. But they get the job done. By the way, if there was a vote today I think you vote Nate the MVP of the team so far. Agree? Disagree? I count 5 gms that he’s singlehandedly won by himself and/or put them in position to win

  48. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:00 pm

    All together now . . . Torres . . . !

He’s the most whelming of the bunch.

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:17 pm

      Or even Freddie Freddie Freddie Sanchez . . . He’s had a ton of big hits . . .

  49. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Grizzlies LU tonight, FWIW . . . Panda’s back in

Graham CF, Gonzalez SS, Sandoval 3B, Neal LF, Pill 2B, Ishikawa 1B, Eldred DH, Simmons RF, Williams C.

Gonna have to catch a game, check on Neal and Pill when they roll into Sacto . . .

  50. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Hey, Tejada needs the rest. For a week, or at least until Panda returns. Whichever comes first.

    How is Gillaspie on defense?

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:31 pm

A scouting report I read on RealGM Baseball says “Gillaspie appears as though he can handle third base defensively but will never be a Gold Glove candidate”

  51. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Nate isn’t close. It’s still Torres. BP, FanGraphs, any site that tracks these things agree.

  52. Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Pretty incredible considering many didn’t even want Nate on the team. Tough call ..Wilson, Torres Sanchez..all deserving. Where would they be without the dreadful Beard?

I think it’s great we’re getting to see some of the kids. Great exposure for them certainly and G’s will get a better handle on their progress.

  53. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:37 pm

BTW, current OPS leaders, not counting Panda ( .904) and Posey (.756):
    Ross .789
    Torres .767
    Fruckie ..753
    Nate .734
    The Bat .732

  54. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Nate’s value isn’t measured in ops, you know that…

  55. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:11 pm

What Nate does with his glove/arm and late in games is hard to measure cumulatively.

  56. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I’m fine with a little Gillespe tonight. There’s no book on him, maybe he runs into a couple

  57. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Didn’t say it was , that was a side note..FanGraphs rates it all. Nate is no better than 5th in value.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:27 pm

You’re looking at the glitz. Torres is day in day out far and away the MVP, just as he was last year.

  58. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:31 pm

I agree he was the MVP last year. I’m not looking at “glitz” I’m looking at all the shit he does to end games with wins.

  59. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:32 pm

He’s also essentially the reason that buster is done for the year so I’m open to not handing him the MVP tonight

  60. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Well, you have a subjective opinion. Rating all facets THIS YEAR, those sites once again agree it’s Torres. Not Nate. Not Fruckie.

  61. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on June 7, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Franchez has a case for early season MVP too. With all the injuries he’s been indispensible and filled in at the 3 quite well.

  62. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 7:01 pm

But I’m not arguing with the guy who finally came over to the Torres side.If you want to say it’s Nate, Nate it is.

  63. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 7, 2011 at 7:08 pm

“finally came over”. I did a mea culpa on him like the early part of May in 2010……..
I’d list the MVP’s in this order: Nate, bullpen, Torres, Pablo, Franchez…….

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on June 7, 2011 at 7:43 pm

Hmmm yes this site does look different. Anyway, read some of the comments on Pud, sorry but if a 40 year old is the best the Giants can come up with the farm system is in disarray. The way some of you make it sound is if the Giants don’t have a HOFer behind the plate they don’t have a chance. What the Giants need is a good/great defensive guy, there is no available Allstar offensive guy.therer are very few if any team with quality backups at all positions. Ya get what ya get and you don’t throw a fit.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 7, 2011 at 7:32 pm

They have no catching prospect above A ball..Which is why they need to promote Hector Sanchez to Richmond NOW. If he can hit there, for a couple months, he’d be worth a call up before September

      • Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on June 7, 2011 at 8:22 pm

I read about that guy last year, suppose to be a good catcher who can hit,

May well be another squeaker tonight. Hopefully it doesn’t go extras. Though his W-L record is on the negative side (but no match for Bumgarner) this Zimmerman kid sports a WHIP of 1.14, giving up very few walks and only 3 HRs over 60+ innings. Chances are we are looking at another low-scoring affair at McCovey Cove.
