A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

“you’re not going to do it every night…”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 8, 2011

Well put, Franchez…..

The line up and the offense wasn’t really any different than usual, we just didn’t have any late inning heroics. Not much else to say about the offense….

However, the bullpen is another story……..

I haven’t had any coffee yet and I did this without jotting any notes down so excuse me if I missed a run, but by my count the bullpen has now gone 19 straight innings without giving up a run. The last run they gave up was June 2 (2011) in St Louis–Mota gave up a 4 spot.

That got me to wondering what the record is for most scoreless innings by an mlb bullpen. I did a little light internet searching and came up with nothing before I was distracted by a spontaneous bikini-babe search…..

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

(BB’s continues his *Arazi* like move around the turn, Kokonuts slaps a 5-spo on us, and last year’s champ BLADE sinks further into the abyss)…

The games and baseball and life overall are just more fun when the team wins. But I can’t bemoan a loss like last night’s, as frustrating as it is to lose when your pitching gives up only 2 runs. This team, for large parts of this season, has been without its originally intended starting CFer and lead-off hitter (Torres), starting RFer and clutch hitter (Ross), and starting 3Bman and best hitter this season (obviously Pablo), plus the team’s designated super subs (DeRosa and Fontenot and even Ford, who provides such a different dimension) on the DL as well. Throw in the loss of your catcher and arguably the team leader in Posey, plus a couple of vets not hitting as was originally hoped, plus hardly a winning record on that stellar starting pitching staff… Wow, truly amazing. In first place and confidently playing like a team that will occasionally have stinkers but ultimately be fun to watch throughout the whole season and playoffs, baby…. Love what Vogelsong has done, although I’m not sure that one “good” injury (Zito out of action but of course hopefully not in pain or duress) is fair compensation for all the bad ones….

    Anyone concerned about bullpen overuse?

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2011 at 8:38 am

The pen has worked 174 innings, 9th in the league. So the answer Doomer Loo, is ” no”.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2011 at 8:52 am

Really? Why would their “mental fatigue” be more than, say, a team whose relievers have pitched more innings? The Reds are coming in tomorrow, their releivers lead the league in IP. They miust be a fucking wreck. Right?

They went through this last year, RT. The relievers and starters are used to this. Look what it got them . . .

The real beauty to all this IS that fact alone. These guys proved last year that they CAN win it all with outstanding pitching and fair to middling hitting. Like p-in-a said, with all the injuries and underperforming so far, this team is in 1st place. Once Panda is back, they address the catcher spot, get Ford/Font back (or a utility guy to be named later), and Huff either shits or gets out of the starting spot, the hitting will come around.

When it does, the games will more than likely be 5-2 wins rather than 3-2 wins.

      • Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on June 8, 2011 at 9:00 am

  6. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2011 at 8:48 am

These things can actually be checked. The NL average is 178 innings. You might also be surprised to learn that the pen is just 6th best in ERA (.3.23). Pads are 2.34. Saves 20-28. HR alowed: 7, best in league.

I thought all the Midget League coaches practiced on the Splash. It’s the same fucking stance as last year. Here’s where RT’s amateur head doctoring can be put to use-why the good year/bad year? Does a good one tucker him out for a year? Or maybe it’s simple-the thong’s too tight.

  10. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 8, 2011 at 9:43 am

Bullpen is the least of the Giants worries. There are no weak links in that BP. NONE. This season just about every team has two or three relievers with low ERA’s and who are reliable way more often than not. Some teams have four or maybe five solid relievers. With Casilla’s return and Affeldt’s resurrection SF has seven relievers who can be said to be above average in their roles. Mota can be misused as someone other than a long-man. Rest of the gang is generally quite effective from the 7th inning on into extras and recently has been essentially lockdown.

Added to the strongest 1-5 Rotation in the game, Giants bullpen caps a pitching staff built for the long-haul and into the post-season. Overuse would be indicated by more than one or two guys consistently pitching two or more innings on a fairly frequent basis. Bochy has not needed to do that with his BP. In large measure you can thank the strong rotation for that.

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2011 at 9:53 am

Actually, you can thank Bochy for that.

What Stix said in the first sentence.

If I may divert a bit . . . Yesterday I got to watch a player who was picked in Monday’s draft pitch in a state high school playoff game at Rutgers. The kid’s name is Kevin Comer and he was taken 57th overall by the Blue Jays. He’s about 6-foot-4 and throws in the mid-90s with a good, sharp curve and slider. A Toronto scout there said Comer hit 94, and was at 91 when he struck out the side in the 7th to finish a 7-0 shutout with 5 hits, all singles, 7 Ks and 1 walk. This after getting the call from Toronto late Monday night. Anyway, it was kinda cool to see a potential major leaguer play in one of his last high school games. It was also funny to hear the opposing team’s fans bitch to the ump about giving a generous strike zone to ”the draft pick.”

Utterly masterful performance by Matt the Horse today. Best of the season for him. With a Five-Ace rotation, through each and every turn there’s almost always one or more gems. That does make it tough on the opponents. Cain’s WHIP and ERA both took nice dives and the W. looks wonderful.

Amazing thing about today’s presentation was that the 7-8-9 hitters did all the RBI damage, one each for Crawdaddy, Whitey and the Horse. Guy hadda drive in the first run to show these batters how its done. Amazing what a good example can do. Going into the series some Flappers expected (or hoped for) a sweep. Nats aren’t that kinda team anymore. Saw a 2-1 split. Take two-thirds of your home games and half the road contests and its an almost sure ticket to the Postseason.

BP nice and rested for the Reds, so the Undertaker; the Little Birdie that Could; the Freak and Drrrrty have some backup in case of need. Reds didn’t do so hot against Dumpster of the Cubbies today ~ he with the 5-5 record and the five+ ERA. That guy is a strange starter. Seems to blow hot and cold. He was hot enough against the Giants some weeks ago and was nice and warm vs Cincinnati. Checked out those Reds bullpen ERAs on the box. Man, the ones who went today have less than 2.00’s. Now if they had the starters to match and with some of their hitters, that team could be trouble in the Central. As is they are a bit over .500. Giants take three of four? I’d give it about a 53-47 chance.

Never seen so many shut down relievers as there are today. As I posted earlier, our stellar pen is just 6th in ERA in the NL. 4 teams have relief staff ERAs under 3.

With his .371 BA, 1.031 OPS in AZ, I’d say that’s a pretty good decision.;.
RoughTrade: I was needlessly harsh with you this morning. I apologize.

Dodgers edged out the Giants in ’65. Mays had 52 HR, McCovey 39, Jim Ray Hart 23. Dodger leaders were Lou Johnson and Jim LeFebvre with 12 each. Giants doubled the Dodger HR total. I don’t thnk the Bums are giving their rings back.
