A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Breakdown in The Plan

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 10, 2011

So I think we all know “The Plan” by now. Have the pitchers pitch lights out and have 1 of our non-pitchers get a timely hit in the 7th inning on to win the game for us. It just didn’t happen last night. But despite our disgustingly impotent offense, I think we all have confidence that The Plan will get executed successfully more often than not…..

I didn’t share Kruk and Kuip’s love-fest over El Presidente’s 3rd gunned down runner of the year. He needs to do that consistently. If he’s not going to hit at all he’s got to be able to at least stop opposing runners from running wild on him. Pudge Rodriguez wouldn’t be my first choice but if he’s the only one available I will take him on the cheap since ANYONE would upgrade that position. “ABEP” is the way to look at this…….

Voggy’s turn to shut down the opposition. He’s facing “T-Wood” and this guy has been awful this year. Still, I fully expect we are going to have to scratch out a single run in the 7th inning or later to beat him. Pretty much every pitcher who goes against us is going to be lights out this year…….

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

Flav: Your sidebar photo of Bumgarner with the plaint beneath said it all. Several of the losses this season have been characterized by the feeling that the Giants are one bat short. We are all hoping that Panda with the battered paw will be that bat. Briefly, there was hope for Huff when he broke out in St. Louis, but something about the Bayside inn seems to have the effect of cooling off most bats. Giants are still in first, amazingly while yet to have one single hitter go on an extended tear.

Cueto was the Reds pitcher i was worried about in my comments yesterday, going into this series. All the rest sport ERAs reminding me of the ones that team’s pitchers had in the mid-late 50’s. Just check the backs of those ’57 BB cards. Still have a nice pile of them. Hoping Bumgarner’s effort last night was not the best one by far that we get in this series. If the rotation sticks to form games two, three and four should end up a lot better.

before the pen let in two late ones, this was a 1-0 game, very winnable. Cue FS line here.
Torres still has a very high OB, but his slugging is down so far, and his Ks are up. I love the guy, but the baserunning stuff, getting picked off twice and being thrown out stealing last night, looms a little larger when the team isn’t scoring. The CS last night was also the only time he got on base. Hope he can stay healthy; SF is gonna need him, big time, to get closer to that .823 OPS from last year.
Former spurs great forward Mike Mitchell died last night at 55. What a cool team SA had back in the early 80s, full of guys who could put the ball in the hoop: Iceman, Artis gilmore, gene banks and shooters off the bench like rod brewer and big man edgar jones (out of oakland). Point g johnny moore (wore “00”) was a solid player and distributor and almost died of Lyme disease/Valley fever in his 30s. Fun team to watch…80 in a half was nothing.

Agree No Whitey has to show consistency throwing runners out. The SP staff does not hold runners on well, but then how offten do runners get on, and then their attitude is “I will just get the next guy out”, that is just confidence in their abilities. The FB league, I if I sink any lower I am just going to start treating this like an on line game, right now I am at level 12, going for Ferret and Level 14!!

Torres’ numbers are down from last season, that’s a fact. But he’s still not a problem in the line up. The *problems* are Tejada, Huff and Whiteside and the fact that we don’t have a single hitter in the LU that an opposing pitcher would fear or need to pitch around…….

Another tough loss for Bumgarner last night but that’s how it goes with this club. All the starters know and accept it.

Renteria calling Uribe a big baby for crying when he got his ring is pretty funny.

  6. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 10, 2011 at 9:26 am

As Stix noted, that picture of MadBum perfectly matches the sentiment. At least tonight we get Vogey who can swing the bat, god knows this lineup needs all the help it can get.

BF, you may want to re-check the Flap standings. It got even more crowded at the top after last night, including a big tumble by a former first-place squad.

I bet you were the kid in school who told the teacher that Johnny took his seat after the bell rang.

There’s no need to re-check the Flap standings, I know my “big tumble” was on account of my pitching stinking on ice. How much ice you ask? I borrowed a couple of bags from the Giants offense.

I thought Bochy told Sanchez no more bunting. These guys can’t give away outs. Esp late in a game, and esp with Tejada already in scoring position. Sanchez is the most consistent hitter on the team and he bunts? Gimme a fucking break.

And Huff is really really down now. His ABs are painful. He’s not recognizing the backfoot slider that EVERYONE knows is coming.

  8. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 10, 2011 at 9:53 am

Lost is that Tejada had his best game..and notice also Nate’s OBP now below .300. Some moron on the Splash wanted Nate or Crawford to replace Torres in the 1.”Mentalist” is the guy-the worst kind, an idiot who thinks he’s smart..
As I’ve said-enjoy the team you have- the defense is once again excellent, better than last year now, the pitching still stellar. Bochy acknowledged that it’s longer than anticpated for the offense to pick up. It’s rough when everybody’s numbers are down. Fruckie has predictably cooled off, Nate as well. This makes the LU ashing even more hilarious- it’s truly pick ’em out of a hat now. What’s the point of keeping Pablo in Fresno any longer? He’s 3 for 6 with 6 RBI, get his ass up here. And give Hector about a week, if he’s hitting, get him, too. Waive Stewart and give Sanchez spot starts.Right now it’s bad enough to give Burrell some starts again, Nate back to his role player status.

Chuckles, late in the game is the time you go with the sacrifce. It’s early that Bochy doesn’t like it it. And this may be tough to take in, but Huff is “hotter” than Fruckie right now..and I think they almost have to give Burrell some starts again.

I’ve been in San Diego for a few days. Saw the Pads/Nats game last night, along with not that many others at Petco. $20 scalped ticket 8 rows behind the 3rd base dugout — $71 face value season tix seat. Virtually no buzz there, nice park, but kind of weird construction. Too many angles and jagged looks for me. The left field warehouse wall thing is kinda cool, looking back to the plate from that area made me realize that Burrell’s HR up there last year was a titanic shot. Anyway, Pudge looked serviceable in person. He had a passed ball on a pitch that wasn’t that tough. His arm looks pretty good, he looks in very good shape. I doubt he’d hit more than .220 with consistent ABs. Would he be an upgrade on El Presidente? Sure, but not huge…

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 10, 2011 at 11:31 am

A.L Beasts of the East, BoSox and Yanks look to be locked in a MonsterTruck duel this year. Both teams are hurtin for mound help, particularly the Yanks, after losing Joba. They are probably already sniffing around the teams which are pretty much out of the race, scoping out who they might scarf up on the cheap, dangling so-so prospects in front of the outfits which make money but don’t care so much about fielding a winner.

Take a look at these stats for the pitching staff of the Richmond Flying Squirrels and see if they give you any ideas:
    Starting with relievers:
-Osiris Matos: 2.42 ERA; 31 hits in 36.1 innings; FIVE walks; 27 K’s; O.99 WHIP and ML experienced.
-Dan Otero: 1.54 ERA; 32 hits in 35 innings; THREE walks; 37 K’s; 1.00 WHIP.
-Ronnie Ray: 0.95 ERA; 20 hits in 28.1 innings; Five walks to 29 K’s; ZER0.88 WHIP.
-David Quinowski: 2.10 ERA; 18 hits in 25.2 IP; Three walks to 17 K’s; 0.82 WHIP.
That’s a composite of 16 walks to 110 strikeouts. The composite WHIP is under One. Zero. Couple more relievers with good records, but these guys stand out as quite a stockpile in SF’s AA team.
    Starters doing well:
    -Eric Surkamp: 1.92 ERA; 58 hits in 66.2 I.P. and a WHIP of 1.28.
-Ryan Verdugo: 2.93 ERA; 52 hits in 61 I.P., with a WHIP of 1.23. Last week’s E.L. Pitcher of the week.

Two possible scenarios here: Giants give up a M.L proven reliever or maybe even two, just possibly a starter from the current roster OR dangle some of these names and stats IF either of those hitting rich teams has someone who would boost our L.U. Hard to tell whether Cleveland is a contender or pretender, but that’s another team which could use pitching help and seems to have a good accumulation of wood.

Snakes lose. Hope we can make up a full game tonight. Let’s see … some hitting wouldn’t hurt. Hitting, too. And of course, a little hitting could actually affect the outcome of this game.

Only Surkamp, Verdugo, and a guy not listed ( Jason Stoffel) are considered prospects.

I just read the great story on Voggy in The Chron. Can’t beat his script. Well, yes you can. Top it with a WS win. Watching Voggy pitch is a delight. He is businesslike and unFlappable. I guess he figures, “How bad can it ever get professionally? I’ve seen that, stared at it, and went beyond it.” Go, Voggy.

  62. eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on June 10, 2011 at 9:15 pm

I can’t believe a battery of Stewart and Song are holding the Red machine to 2 runs. A pitch that could have been a strike 3 and a ball that could have been a double play or we would have the lead.
