A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Some Random Thoughts as I do a Slow Burn About this First Place Team

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 9, 2011

I know it should just be about impossible to be upset about being in first place but I’m having no problem whatsoever getting there. Aubrey Huff needs to sit down for at least a week. He’s got 2 RBI’s in his last 11 games—and both of those were in that 15-3 laugher when they weren’t even needed. He hasn’t hit a home run since June 2nd. He has ONE extra base hit since June 23rd. That’s almost impossible to to believe and he’s making me miss Molina’s dry spells as the clean up hitter…..

Marty Lurie has been talking about picking up Beltran, non-stop, for about 2 months now. I want Sabean to acquire him for no other reason than I can’t listen to Lurie talk about it anymore. But seriously, I am totally on board with a Beltran trade. I suspect you wouldn’t have to give up as much as you think since he’s an unbelievably expensive rental–you lose him at the end of the year plus he’s still owed 9 million for the rest of this year. Not a lot of clubs are looking to take on 9 million more for a rental. You wouldn’t have to give up Dirrrrrty or Belt. It’s not gonna get done with Burriss, Gillespe etc either. Maybe Nate and a B-room pitcher………

The Flap Fantasy Baseball League Standings

(Pawlie continues to dominate like “mall tits on a hot Summer afternoon”. Kevin reaches for the gas mask with a 5.5 point drop and picking up my cast off Matt Capps ain’t gonna help you much.  He’s the Dr. Kevorkian of closers)

Smartest man alive for a rental? You must be joking.

In trying to figure out what Beltran would cost, I just found this from Olney (who knows his shit)
    @Buster_ESPN
    Buster Olney
Remember what must happen for Carlos Beltran trade to happen: Mets would probably have to eat $5-$7 million–and take Grade B-/C+ prospect.

Stuck late at work, didn’t see or hear anything til I walked into a place down the street and saw Wilson vs. Hairston. Wilson couldn’t put him away after going full count, and Hairston yanked one. Same thing with Pagan…he had 2 strikes on him, Whitey kept calling low and away and Pagan kept fouling them off. Then Wilson leaves one up and Pagan smokes it over Andres head Is he using something different for “out pitch” these days? 17 pitches and he only got one guy out on the popped up bunt (which was more than affeldt).
Beltran is certainly interesting, but…he’s expensive for a rental, and will definitely cost you a couple younger players, while adding another aging vet (like SF doesn’t have enough of those already) into the team picture. Shea says he is, “A friend of Torres, Jonathan Sanchez and Sandoval…” Maybe he’d feel good about coming back for less bucks if SF can go places in post season again.
Bad news for Pudge fans…Nats put him on the DL, so he ain’t going anywhere for another couple weeks.
One more thing about beltran…he doesn’t solve Huff issue either. I don’t like Pablo defensively at 1b, and Belt is more than likely spending the summer enjoying fresno. Only other guy who has played 1b is burriss, and that isn’t a solution either. So unless you trade for another 1b, Huff stays and plays, it looks like.

We can’t trade away our best OFer in Nate (how fucking pathetic is that?) for Beltran. This team needs what little hitting it has. Runzler, Burriss and we pay the entire $8 million. They’ll take it and like it.

  5. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 9, 2011 at 8:46 am

Seriously, I want all you Flappers to think about that over your morning coffee and danish. Nate Schierholtz is our best outfielder. If you don’t think this team needs outside help, your head’s stuck so far up Larry Baer’s ass that you can no longer see straight. Nate Schierholtz is our best outfielder. I can’t stop shaking my head…

BTW, both before his recall and now, Belt has been as bad at Fresno as Huff has been here..

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 9, 2011 at 6:03 pm

But he also induced many futile swing throughs at nasty breaking balls and change ups low. Overall, a good start. Huff and Burrell, of course, still look like the two hungover guys in the Jack in the Box ad. But Pablo is hot. Rowand and Miggy are going all out. Somehow al of that mixed together to produce a convincing win. Two up on the DBacks, as a result. Now let’s get tomorrow’s game and go enjoy the AS break.

Agree with you, Xoot, the mix is enough. Good win.

As for improvements, if you look at all the teams, there’s not a lot out there for Sabean. First off, there are a lot of veterans who could handle a stretch run–free agent to be or not–who are underperforming. And any of the younger guys who are producing, for example, Stanton of the Marlins, are nearly franchise-protected. Finally, Sabean does need to think of chemistry to an extent–while help would be appreciated, this team is molded in fire. Anyway, this is going to be a tough assignment for Sabes.

  65. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on July 9, 2011 at 10:27 pm

it’s not a straight forward, go get this guy, thing. Reyes, who was never a gimme is now on the dl. beltran, who is looking good this series, is an injury away from no help at all. And the part about being forged in fire is exactly true. unfortunately, that doesn’t leave me sleeping well.

  66. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 9, 2011 at 11:27 pm

The thing is, no one Sabes got last year was very highly regarded. From Huff to Ross to Ray to Burrell to Casilla on down the line, they came in and caught the vibe, felt the groove, or whatever you want to call it. Would a guy like Paulino come in and drop 15 HRs? Probably not, but we’d get a hell of a lot more than we’re currently getting. Catcher at this point is the black hole. However, Huff’s lack of production is becoming an imploding star.
