A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Playing Smart Baseball…..

Coaxing walks, stealing bases, bunting….Yesterday’s game had it all. For a team that rarely does any of those things, well or otherwise, yesterday’s game was a pleasure to watch. They played a side of the game they usually ignore and I hope we see them do it more often…..

Yesterday’s game was loaded with *moments* and it’s the reason this team keeps on winning more than they lose:

1) Nate with the clutch 2 out, 2 strike base hit up the middle in the 6th
2) El Presidente mind-fucking us all the inning before and yet still finding a way to fiddle his way on base in the next inning and STEALING 2nd base and then Torres coming up with the huge RBI to tie it. The stolen base by Whitey cannot be understated……
3) 9th inning–Whitey WALKS (huh?). Burriss PR’s for him and steals 2nd and then we get to see what a great bunter Stewart is as he sacrifices him with a perfect one to third. Torres and Pablo crap out but that was still a pretty cool inning…….
4) Burriss singles, steals 2nd and without even touching the bag (go watch the replay) he motors over to 3rd! Stewart, obviously, suicide squeezes him in because he’s just been discovered as the best bunter on the freaking planet. Those 2 bunts by Stewart were 2 of the best bunts, without question 2 of the best back-to-back bunts by a player that I can ever remember……
5) Wilson diddles his way into a jam in the 11th, 1st and 2nd nobody out. And that maligned catcher (I can’t remember his name) drops a not-so-bad sac bunt down the third base line. Stewart pounces on it and fires probably the fastest fastball a catcher can throw to third base from that area of the field. Pablo, remembering it’s a catcher running to 1st base, doesn’t hesitate and throws a ball almost as hard to nail Nameless Catcher at first, securing the worst game he’s ever played in baseball at any level……
Now, to Brian (Bee-Wheezy-Spandexy) Wilson: Zumie covered some of this in his POTD. He’s throwing almost exclusively to corners. The heat we once knew him for is gone. And what has happened, obviously, is that the hitters are taking an absurd amount of pitches because very few of them are getting called strikes.. Many of those balls are hittable and impossible to take in some of those counts. And yet they continue to let them pass harmlessly by. Besides the fact that the scouts have nailed down where Wheezy is throwing the ball (almost always to a corner) I think the hitters have just decided that it’s better to take their chances with a walk (likely to get) than try to hit Wilson’s sick stuff. He HAS to start attacking the zone better than he’s done so far. His 2-seam fastball is a filthy pitch but no one ever swings at it. It’s time for him to go back to the 4 seam more often, assuming it still has the velocity it once had, and challenge these hitters. His strategy is not working and it’s time to adjust……..

Gutsy, never say die, fight to the end, scrappy, leave it all on the field, Torture (or to the Lady Gaga crowd, torcher). All valid descriptions on how the Giants play. But I’ve come to think of this team as just loving to play chicken, draw a line in the dirt and the first one who flinches (makes a mistake) loses. It’s not just one or two guys, it’s a sum of the whole team (starting with Sabes and Bochy on down). This team is something like 24-11 in one run games and I think 10-5 in extra innings. Most teams wear out playing this type of playoff style game over a long period but the Giants haven’t, I actually think they thrive on it. It seems that even when they go out and get a new player, by the most part that guy will get caught up in that mentality as well.
How would I describe this teams play? They play with GIANT hairy cojones, that’s how.

      nice, boz.
on another topic, the non-commercial jazz station I listen to, http://www.kcsm.org., played a cut “Give Him Cornbread” from beau jocques this morning. I checked out some of his live stuff from mid-90s on you tube, great music, cracklin band. On one of them they mention a film done by a r.mugge I guess a clip was taken from… Ever catch him live? Cd you recommend?

I saw him one year on the big stage at jazz fest (I think it was around 93)and the band just killed. I was completely floored. My wife saw him a few times including a couple times at Zydeco fest and I guess he kicked ass everytime she saw him as well. I have the CD, Pick up on This, I love it but Give Him Cornbread isn’t on it. I also have him on a few Zydeco comps. One show that I missed that if I could go back in time to see I would, Beau Jocques versus Boozo Chavis (Take em off, throw em in the corner), for a Zydeco wars at the bowling alley (Mid-City Lanes, Rock N Bowl). That just had to be one fun night.
Willie, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of his stuff.

Wilson is getting it done, but his numbers should be a concern. Already same amount of walks (26), as he had all last yr, the K’s are down and runs allowed the same amount as last yr.

Was to busy to watch the game. sounds like a great one. On Murph and Mac this morning they wonder if the call up of Sanchez? the catcher in the minors, lit a fire under NoWhitey and Stewart. The threat of job security can be a great motivational tool. Haven’t had time to read the last two days worth of posts, but are people here still clamoring for another player?? and if so who? Was also reading that this is a good time to bring up Hector, see if he can catch in the Bigs. Not much of a hitter, struck out and grounded out when I saw him play last week. want to say he went 0-4. but that is just one game. All I know is this team keeps on winning, they don’t have prolonged losing streaks (see the Padres for that). As long as they continue to play the way they are, see Bozo’s post, they will win the division and then anything can happen in the playoffs. See last year for the results.

So I guess after we trade for a new second baseman, shortstop, outfielder and catcher, we’ll have to consider getting a new closer as well. Boy, does this team suck.

  5. willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 18, 2011 at 8:18 am

The wear and tear on wilson’s arm from the extra work that goes along with the walks has to be a concern. His WHIP, BA against, and as a byproduct the ERA are all worse than his last couple years. Having to throw more pitches with less clean and uneventful innings is not a good thing.
Sure, hitters are taking the JSanchez approach against him; why wouldn’t they? He does seem to be low and away more these days with the 2 seamer, but that’s often where the C target is. Seems when he does try and throw the high hard one, which is unhittable when it is just above the zone, he overthrows it and it’s a wild easy take. I would guess it wouldn’t take long to ramp up the speed if he did throw more 4 seamers. And those are not easy to hit either, and set up the 2 seamer…instead of just relying on it so often.
Funny thing i was thinking about the possibility of the DP off a bunt by a guy who probably hasn’t done it much and doesn’t run well (like you see happen to pitchers), but I figured more likely it would be to second then first.
Poor black…he calls a pitchout on burriss steal, and the C throws into CF so he not only gets second but also third. Then he calls another pitchout, and bochy runs the squeeze on the next play, when kuiper mentioned he knew mgrs who would do it again (craig was famous for it) since stewart didn’t matter. Then he asks the wrong guy to make the right play, and bunts into a DP. Humbling game, it is.

Kevin– I don’t think Whitey or Stewart needed a fire lit under them. They both know they are on the bubble. Career minor league catchers know they don’t have a lot of rope. What’s amazing is that either made the big leagues at all. Stewart is clearly the more valuable catcher with his arm and, you know, being the best bunter the world has ever seen…..

Wild stat of the day (yesterday). Darren Clarke was 0 for 53 in majors and Japan was 0 for 25 against the USA. that is, until yesterday. Throw in 6 steals for the Giants and a suicide squeeze winner? The world was upside down yesterday….

Excellent wrap on the smallball weaponry, Flav. One way or t’nother they get it done. Seems like there’s a new hero just about every game. Picking each other up. Winning by an eyelash. All these factors accumulating must drive their opponents right up the wall. Who’s gonna wanna play with them anymore? I mean, it just can’t be fun to face the Giants.

Firstly, if you are a batter for the other team, you are up against a rambunctious rotation (one current who- knows- when exception) and then when you do get to the 7th inning or so, there’s a bevy of nasty relievers adroitly placed by an astute manager who has made that his specialite’ de maison. Get to the 9th and you face up against the biggest tease in baseball who almost invariably lets guys get on base and then basely strands them waaay more often than not. I mean how can this possibly be any fun.

Knowing they usually can’t hit for shit, Giants are now embracing smallball and even without a slew of speedsters have lately taken up base thievery like the most base bunch of baseballers around. And NOW they have even discovered they have a guy who can lay down perfect bunts. Shades of Fred Haney. It’s kinda like some boxer who keeps holding you in a clinch, wears you down with fancy footwork and then crowns the indignity with a series of quick jabs to the jaw.

Winning baseball, playing championship baseball, more often than not is when you develop a team spirit around the concept that everyone pitches in and in the process a lot of little things just keep adding up. When this winning spirit asserts itself, even the loss of key players does not appear to add up to much more than some speedbumps on the road to October.

This year’s version of the Halloween Machine is one strange conglomeration once again of not so great position players combined with redoubtable pitching and usually stolid defense. They rarely beat themselves, while at the same time, how the hell do you beat them? Giants have yet again developed that winner attitude. Gotta love it.

The nameless catcher Kyle Phillips took forever to unload from the crouch, and wasn’t too accurate when he finally threw — the Pads blog, such as it is, is dumping on him big time. If the Pads keep playin’ that guy against squads that can really run, hell, some team could steal 10 in one game. The last time the Giants stole 6 was in 1987 against the Stros, and Kruk was pitching. I’d look for 6 SBs in a game again around 2035. As for the bunts, I’ve been an advocate of more bunts on a squad that pitches lights out, but can’t hit, since dirt. I love bunting, if more Giants could actually execute it other than Stewart, bring more of it on…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 18, 2011 at 10:18 am

Bochy has the proper attitude toward bunting. And his attitude actually has statistical evidence to back it. With that said, yesterday a couple of nearly unheard of things happened: Burriss got on base. and a good bunter was up next. THAT may happen again around 2035.

Wilson has always thrown for the paint, That’s why he’s been a top closer. He doesn’t give in. You guys ought go be able to figure out that there’s something wrong when he hardly ever throws the pitch that made him a top closer: the 4 seam. He’s either still hurt or he’s taking bad advice, most likely his own. The difference from last year is that he’s fiddle farting around with 4 pitches, and using his best the least.,.
Yet I’d guess he’s been the most influential closer in the game- he’s saved or won 34 of their 55 wins…

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on July 18, 2011 at 10:18 am

      “Fiddle farting…” I never knew!

  12. big flavor's avatar big flavor said, on July 18, 2011 at 10:23 am

well, you could use the word “influential” but I think a better word would be “involved”. Kimbrel has the same # of saves but better numbers (significantly) across the board. And Hanrahan hasn’t blown a save all year, I don’t think.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2011 at 10:30 am

Of course he’s influential or involved in an inordinate number of their wins. When almost every game is a one or two run dogfight to the end, the closer is going to be a primary player. We’ll see how he fares in mid-late August. If he keeps throwing a ton of pitches every outing, after two seasons of abuse his right arm may be 6′ long by then…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 18, 2011 at 10:45 am

We hear a variation on that from you every year. Lack of support will wear on the starters and they’ll have nothing left…blah blah. That evil offense is going to do them all in. Just like last year.Don’t you tire of being wrong?

Influential is the proper word.. I didn’t say he’s been the best closer this year. But whatever, if you want to nitpick the word, go for it. As to Kimbrel and Hanrahan, they have to be successful a little longer beforte they’re in his class.

With Wilson, I can never tell whether he really is pitching around a guy he deems to be a threat and therefore doesn’t give in, or if he’s just being too damn cute and/or wild. Like yesterday, after the sensational DP, he walks the .163-batting Forsythe to put the winning run on base. That just shouldn’t happen. Fortunately, he had the .205-hitting Gonzalez up next. But as they say, that’s the way he rolls. I guess we should be used to this high-wire act by now.

I woiuldn’t get too wrapped up in the small ball aspect of the Giants yesterday. Or even the series. They were facing the slowest catcher in the bigs. And they knew it. Their running game isn’t usually this successful.

As far as Wilson goes, his velocity is down from 97 to 93. That has something to do with why he’s aiming for the black. Not sure why he is losing velocity, though. Which is why I didn’t want to see him pitch in the ASG.

  19. big flavor's avatar big flavor said, on July 18, 2011 at 11:03 am

I don’t think anyone knows if he’s lost velocity or not. His pitch speed has gone down overall because he’s throwing the 2-seamer, a pitch i THINK he started using this year…

  20. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 18, 2011 at 11:17 am

As I’ve said, there’s obviously something wrong. His velocity is down when he does throw the 4-seam, And again, he rarely throws it which makes zero sense UNLESS something is wrong. He regularly hit 98/99 when he humped up last year. Have you ever seen him hit that this year. No, you haven’t.

He’s not failing so much as burning through a shitload of pitches every outing. It seems like all his outings he throws 25-30+ pitches. He certainly won’t be called on for any more 4 out saves like the recent past. They may need to let Romo get a few more opportunities to rest BW down the stretch.

  23. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 18, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Finally, a lot of you declare that 2010 is over, they need to forget about it. You couldn’t be more wrong. Aside from obvious economic advantages the Yankees have had over the years, their 5-in-a-row World Series wins from ’49-53 is suspect. While Mickey Mantle was patrolling centerfield for the Yankees, guys like Ted Williams, Willie Mays, and others were serving in the military. Mantle was declared 4-F by the military somehow, yet he was healthy enough to play centerfield and win multiple World Series. Think the Yankees had some connections somewhere? I’ll say this about it. They sold that story well. I’ve had several folks over the years defend Mantle’s “trick knee” adamantly. Mantle’s “trick knee” is sacrosanct. Apparently the military couldn’t find a use for Mantle in an office job somewhere. So, while Ted Williams was flying military jets in Korea, for his SECOND tour of duty in the military, after flying planes in WWII, Mantle’s winning the World Series and staying out late and partying.

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 18, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Willie Mays spent most of his tour of duty playing baseball for an Army baseball team. You have to wonder what was the point of drafting him then?
So, think of the logic involved here. Mantle was supposedly too physically lame to be drafted by the Army and put on an Army baseball team, but healthy enough to lead the Yankees to World Series championships.

There’s a reason why the Yanks are called the Evil Empire. It’s a bit of a metaphor for the whole NY based money-driven culture in this country. George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ is also instructive. After the animals overthrew the humans, pretty soon it was the pigs who were running things. According to their ‘revolutionary’ doctrine all the animals were sposta be equal. Motto of the Hogs: “Some are more equal than others”. Bear that in mind when considering the Yankees from the days of Col. Jake Ruppert on and things become much more clear.

I don’t have a problem with Stewart starting, I think he’s probably the best catcher of the 3 we have right now to start regularly. Having said that, I don’t understand why Sanchez was called up to just sit on the bench. The only thing I can think of is that they want to give the kid a few days to soak up the mlb scene and talk with the coaches about how to call a game with these specific starting pitchers. Then he gets 8-9 games or so to show what he’s got, if he’s ready to play at this level. Otherwise, I just don’t get this……

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Boston and Lakers of the ’60s and early ’70s would run most of today’s teams out of the gym. These teams today can’t play defense to save their lives. Their heads would spin at the passing and motion and running. The ’72 Lakers would beat every team today…

  57. zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 18, 2011 at 7:25 pm

I guess the Dodgers’ hot-shot triple-A outfielder Sands flamed out when they brought him up. Looks like Freeman, of the Braves, is a lock for ROY.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 18, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Agree Zum . . . I suspected that Freeman would be in the running for the ROY when the season started (i.e., I added him to both my FL teams when the season started, but dropped him on both when he was in a severe slump, then added him again on one of the teams when he started to “get it”). He was fortunate to play for the Braves because they told him at the beginning of the season he was their starting 1st baseman regardless of how he played and proved that, when they let him play through his early season slump. Conversely, Sand is on a dysfunctional baseball team and he probably doesn’t know if he is coming or going (figuratively and literally).

Another player that probably needs some more “schooling” in the minors is Mike Trout of the Angels. He is 19 and is probably the number 1 or 2 rated prospect in all of MLB. They brought him up a couple of weeks ago and it’s apparent that he needs more seasoning. I took a flier on him in both my FL leagues. Well, come the end of this week, I think the Angels are going to send his ass back to the minors for more seasoning (which is appropriate).

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 18, 2011 at 7:42 pm

this is a lean year, obviously….and Blade, how many at bats has Trout had? 11? ANd you’re already sending him back to the minors?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 18, 2011 at 7:46 pm

Actually, the Angels have already determined that . . . Per a number of sources, he is back in the minors by this weekend. Concurrent with the aforementioned info, I do have a waiver wire request involving him in place that I wont reveal here, because other Flap FL league players, including yourself, may sabotage my plans.

        Ha.

Kinda didn’t expect them to score with a pair in scoring position and Huff at bat. The line-out indicates he squared up okay and hit the ball resonably hard. Guess what i’m trying to say here is that the need for the one more bat up the middle of the lineup has become pretty acute right about now, especially against a pretty decent pitcher like Billingsley. Nate continues to turn it around and Panda has reverted to dynamo status. That one solid hitter following Schierholtz would probably also help get Aubrey back on track.

Well at least we threw a scare into em and upped Lady’s pitch count considerably above Vogelsong’s 8 in the top of the inning.
