A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Milwaukee is Pretty Good

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 23, 2011

Working with some substandard equipment here so this will be quick. I caught the game from a poker table last night. The Kepp Era has started off slowly, yet predictably. I declare Milwaukee to be better than us, as we are currently constructed. I didn’t sweat the Morgan thing the way the rest of you seemed to. He’s crazy, everyone knows that.

I already said that the kid is mentally ill, I don’t sweat it, his Mommy should…he’s going to have a short, troubled career if he doesn’t get help..
Keppinger was fine, they need to can the Crawdaddy- right now Keppinger and Fontenont need to be in the middle…even Manny brings more to the table overall.
Milwaukee isn’t a better team, they just hit better-there’s a diff.,a BIG diff.
Xoot posted about Pablo’s misatake on the grounder, as if that lost the game- well, bad pitches from Cain, dropped throw from Whitey, blown call by the first base ump, those had something to do with it, too.Contrary to popular opinion, the pitcher doesn’t get a pass for everything he gives up after a mistake.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 10:06 am

Some thiink hitting is the only part of the game, so they declare the Brewer’s better. Sure, we’ll lose a few well pitched games, but still discounted by the B Squad is that the Giants have the shutdown pitching at home (2.75 ERA) and are the third best hitting team( NL) on the road. Because of those splits, and we saw it in the postseason last year, the Giants are not the perceived “one and out” against anybody…

Pablos mistake was inexplicable. Nothing else was especially notwhiteys fu. It was fun watching the brewers runners and coaches freeze when schierholtz came up throwing those two times. Just notes from the stands.??????

Well, the hits LaCroy and Betancourt got were on pretty damn good pitches.

It’s not like Cain grooved a couple fastballs.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 11:25 am

Cain was worse than Panda, I’ll put it that way. I know about sometimes getting beat. It’s the B’ers who don’t understand that. Just as Nate hasn’t “singlehandedly” won shit, same for losing…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 11:49 am

The pitch to Betancourt on the double was a terrible pitch- and mistakes by pitchers count just as much as those by hitters and fielders.

      • unca chuck's avatar unca chuck said, on July 23, 2011 at 12:02 pm

Then I’m thinking of a different AB. The RBI singles were both down and away pitches that were not in the strike zone.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 12:15 pm

He has to have more snap on those, like Ramirez did. If those two could go get ’em, the pitches sucked.

BTW, since they are third in hitting on the road but only 2 games over .500 away, obviously the pitchers make a few mistakes, too.

Brewers look like legit contenders for the NL crown if Frankie, Marcum and Greinke are at their best. Their big 3 in that lineup as good as any. Hart has better numbers than any of our OFer’s. At a generous price, I’d bet them to knock off the Phils.

    Plum pretty today, boys?

Agree time may be running out on Crawford, but I still think it’s just a matter of time. And if there’s no threat from Az/Colo, why not play him and see what happens? There’s certainly no upside to Fontenot.

Don’t know why there’s all the angst over Pablo’s play. If he goes to 3rd, he only gets that out. No way they get McGeehee at 1st. No way he gets the out at 2nd if he goes to 3rd.

There was only one out to get on that play and he got it. Better 2nd than going to 1st, but the double by Betancourt scored the runner from 1st anyway, so it’s pretty nuch moot.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 23, 2011 at 6:13 pm

You don’t know that. Pablo very might have completed the 5-3 DP if he went to the bag. Like he should have…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 23, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Nope. He was pretty far from the bag. He would have gotten Fielder out easy. But Dioubtful on the throw to 1st.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 6:34 pm

There was zero chance for the DP. The inning, rightfully, was all on Cain.

No Belt vs. the lefty Wolf, so I guess Bochy doesn’t feel he can hang any better than Huff, who is back in the clean up spot. Take a look at the stats for Belt and Stewart, similar production (or lack of it, I guess is more accurate) in equal ABs. Since Belt has two HRs, his OPS is about 50 points higher, but fangraphs site has him at 0.1 WAR (in other words, Tejada level), and Stewart 0.4.
Lot of fans happy to see him up…I just want to see if he can hit vs. any team besides LA and give the team what it hasn’t had from Huff.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2011 at 6:31 pm

      • willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 23, 2011 at 6:37 pm

yeah, I saw that…not even a decent wave at that last pitch. Stewart walk pct. a little lower than Belt’s, but his K pct. only half as high as belts is.

Getting the lead runner was the best play. Trying for the 5-4-3 DP after the bobble was stupid. Fucking inexplicable. If Cain had runners at first and second instead of first and third would he have pitched differently? Yes. Especially with fucking Whitey behind the plate (even though the runner at third was fat fuck Fielder). Did Cain fuck up? Yes. But the entire situation would have been different if Pablo had not fucked up. So, who knows? — except as to one thing. Pablo fucked up. Looking at it from right behind him was incredible. It looked as if he’d forgotten that Fielder was even there.

Some excellent and entertaining play in this game tonight. Serious question: Which entrance is the best to stake out when you want to line up for a hot giveaway? I remember laughing at some bobble-head line stretching down King St. last year. But dammit, I’m gonna get one of those fedoras tomorrow night. So I’ll be in line. Question is, which line? My hunch is, the entrance by the Marichal statue (just over the 3d St. bridge) will be shortest. Most of the fedora fanatics won’t be parking in the official lots. Thougts?

Wilson hasta be looking to a hot date tonight. No dawdling. No drama. Five pitches. Five strikes. Three outs.

More and more its looking like Nate is for real. This season he has gone from a 4th or even 5th outfielder to a solid MLB regular, whose defense and whose doubles in many ways atone for his relative lack of power. His fairly frequent clutch also doesn’t hurt his rising status.

Vogelsong is becoming the Ace. What a story! Once more Timmy and Matt go down and the Little Birdie that Could stops the bleeding. Bullpen solid once again. Stellar crew.

couple times now i’ve seen vogs pitched scared, like the one whose name I won’t mention. Weeks doubled off a pitch inside, and then he wouldn’t come in any more, throwing fastballs away only. When he got the ball up, Brews whacked it. Same with the curve..he hung one to braun, who was looking for it and hammered it, and then vogs stopped using it despite how well it worked to others. He didn’t pitch out of difficulty. The brewers ran themselves out of the game. Has MacG never played a game of pickle in his life? He stood there and let Stewart tag him out. Morgan tried to run with 3-1 count on Braun and Fielder on deck. Vogs was on fumes.
Nate is going best when he does what he did first times up, which is take outside pitches in front of OF or up the middle. When he tries to power stuff in the air to CF, it just doesn’t work. I realize he hit the ball hard that morgan caught friday, but it’s warning track power when he goes to that part of the yard. Same thing happened to him in SD as what happens here. Maybe in another park that works for him, but not in SF.

This was the best game of the year. With the possible exception of Font, every starter made a significant contribution,Fuck this nonsense with giving POTG to the “pen”. If you can’t name a guy, there wasn’t one. It was Nate but there was great defense from Stewart, Kepp, Ross, Panda’s great tag. yes-the pen, BTW, Torres’ hit was scalded and took a big hop, nobody screwed up anything- as it was properly ruled-base hit all the way. Encouraging night for Huff, as well, and a fortunate but gutty win for Vogelong. As I said., best game of the year.. if it’s good baseball you value…

But, if someone else wants to give their POTG to Nate, fine by me. Nate is coming on; I have supported him for more regular playing time for a long, long while. No doubt it is truly right and proper to get in a faux frenzy about POTG on an early Sunday. As we know, the players, after all, have utmost concern about who gets that coveted POTG from random Flappers…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 24, 2011 at 11:00 am

POTG is a player, not players. Nate, however, didn’t deserve more playing time for a “long, long time”, he is only now deserving regular starts… and as I posted about the poll on Huff, Torres, etc, Nate continuing to hit well is an even bigger question.
No frenzy, I gave Nate the honor last night. If you have someone else, give a name or STFU. (or bag on Torres).

I was against the rental but I’m coming around to it- mainly because the only OFer who can be COUNTED ON for respectable numbers is Ross. Peguero, as I’ve said, is a better prospect than Brown, but he’s had some injury probs. If they do it for him, go for it..

Well, as Bochy said when he came up, he was not brought up to replace Huff. A couple starts week in left or first, a bat off the bench is his role. If he shines and Huff doesn’t pick it up, he’ll get more starts. Prettty simple, really.

It was pretty much inevitable. Sooner or later the top position in MLB ERA had to get taken over by the Giants. As of this morning team ERA for SF is a nifty 3.10, best in baseball. Though the longtime leader, Philly, is still pretty close, the Braves have fallen a bunch off the pace after having been in second for a bunch of while. Padres and A’s still fairly good. My expectation is that there will be some reshuffling among the top 6 or so teams this coming week as Giants travel to bandboxes in Philly and Cincy.

Giants are 13th in the league or close to that in most batting categories, except for doubles where they are second to, amazingly, Houston. The bandbox appearance in Philly may not alter that status very much as they may be facing pitching on a par with their own. However, the series at the Great American Bandbox may see SF’s bats rapping out some pretty good melodies.

If Beltran happens, whose playing time would suffer the most? I would also wonder if Beltran’s days as a CF are completely over.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 24, 2011 at 12:42 pm

I think Bochy would do as usual- hot hand and match ups- if Nate doesn’t go feet up, I’d think that Beltran gets most of his time in LF, Rowand is pretty much out. As long as Nate stays hot, Andres and Ross pretty much split time..Belt, as an OFer would be out, of course. A Ross/Torres platoon in center until/if Nate crashes would work.

Peguero hasn’t done much in 6 yrs in the minors. He’ll hit about like Ford in the bigs. Mets want him, go for it.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 24, 2011 at 1:02 pm

Experts like him, he’s rated right with Brown. As I pointed out to you, he’s battled some injuries. But he’s a five tool, Brown 4..you might note he’s only 23 YO, as well.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 24, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Ford’s career BA in the minors is .266, Peguero .310.

someone in the chron this morning noted the almost play-off like atmosphere. The coming week or two will certainly be a test. Being July, the outcome is of little import but it’s fun to see the g’s facing good teams.

  65. Sirius's avatar Sirius said, on July 24, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Peguero a 5 tool? He’s only hit 25 hr’s in ml seasons. Maybe hes a proverbial late bloomster. 23 and he started the season in high A. I’ll take Brown.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 24, 2011 at 1:40 pm

I’m wrong about the 5-tool. I tought I had read that he was considered to have that potential, but it seems I was wrongo..

It’s been that way all season. I especially saw that at the games I’ve been to this season. People are getting to their seats earlier before the game. They’re making more noise when the pre-game stuff is happening, like the Giants lineup getting announced. There are more young people, college-aged types, going to the games. The Giants are IN, they’re the happening thing. Some of these folks are bandwagon-jumpers, but that’s the sort of the thing that happens when you win a championship. It all benefits the team in the long-run….more revenue for the team payroll, signing and re-signing players.

Ha! You don’t have faith in the ol’ 8-9-1 National League inning? Usually not a big inning in the NL.

Came indoors from gardening and tuned in at the right time. Bumgarner had just broken the ice with his double and soon Keppinger gets the run across for his new team. As long as Braun isn’t batting with men on, Giants should pull this one out.

what happens when you pinch hit for the DH? Does the pinch hitter become the DH?

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 24, 2011 at 2:07 pm

I could be wrong, but I think if the DH leaves the game, the pitcher of that team becomes the official batter in the DH spot.
