A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Holding my Breath Driving Down 101

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 18, 2011

I had to pick someone up at the airport in San Jose yesterday evening so I caught the last inning in the car. It was unfolding towards a perfect storm of torture. You could just feel a loss coming. And then somehow, Affeldt gets that last K and I couldn’t stop myself from reactively banging on my horn a few times–this practiced is frowned upon in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway so you can imagine the ire stoked in the driver in front of me–I fired off a “my-bad look” followed up with a few solid  *knowing dude nods*.  He gave me a fuck-you look and  a “what-the-hell?” throw-both-hands-in-the-air. Changing lanes fixed that problem…….

I am worried about Brian Wilson’s elbow and that would be an injury that would absolutely dampen my enthusiasm about the rest of the season. NO ONE visits Dr. Andrews and comes back with good news (despite the diagnosis of inflammation), He’s the Dr. Kevorkian of Baseball. Wilson has barely pitched the last couple of weeks. Now he has an inflamed elbow? Ominous……

If the DoucheBags had not come back in that first game in Philly, we would be just 1.5 games out and likely closing to a half game today…just a matter of time even with our injuries that we will be a couple of games up on them as we begin those last two series against them. We will win two of three at home and in AZ,,,,

The Wilson injury is disturbing the way it came out of nowhere. Um, his back hurt. OK. Didn’t bother him during the meltdown. OK. So, he could say he was not lying. Then a;; of a sudden he flies to see Dr. Andrews? Whoa! You just don’t do that on a whim. Unsettling to say the least.

I am not holding my breath on anyone, the injury bug has bitten the Giants badly this year. I am not throwing in the towel. If the Giants can get by with NoWhitey and Stewart, they can get by without Wilson. if you say Wilson is more important than Posey thats fine, I just don’t think so.

Kuip said this morning that when Wilson left to go see Dr. Andrews they were resigned to the fact that TJS #2 was upon ’em. Big sigh of relief, but for how long? BW won’t pitch again until at least Tues vs the Friars. I’m starting Mike Minor tonight in our FL. And if you’ve seen my pitching stats that should spell good news for the Giants. Reverse jinx!

Serious injuries to the pen would be a big blow; it’s large part of Giants edge on everyone in the NL Bochy says he’ll be rested (Wilson) for a couple days, so closer by committee takes over. Doubt runzler would be a part of that. What are they going to do with this guy? His ERA before he left here the first time was like 6.75. Is he better off as a starter, or as a Royal?
Reports of M. Bourn running wild turned out to be exaggerated, as he is 2 for 11 this series with 2 runs scored in 3 games, plus an error in the OF. He hasn’t been the big catalyst Braves hoped for so far, as his offensive numbers with them have slid from Houston days. OPS for month of August is .684.
Nice to see all the pop out of the OF lately; 6 HRs in a week is great. Hope they can keep it up through rest of the trip.
Noticed too how Tampa pitching shut down red sox and whipped them in their own yard last couple days, shutting them out and holding high powered offense to 3 hits on consecutive days. Invaluable commodity, that always trumps good hitting…as we saw last year.

Well, Runzler threw nothing but fastballs. The couple sliders were not even close. Despite what Kruk said, they were all pretty much straight. He ain’t gonna last throwing nothing but heat.

I agree BF, on the Wilson view. I mentioned earlier that he’s hardly pitched during this bad fortnight of mostly losses, so WTF is he having an elbow problem? It can’t be from recent overuse. That means to me its more of an acute injury, or just from long term wear. Neither is a good alternative. If Wilson goes down, then well, the season would be shot. You saw what happened last night in the 9th. That was brutal…

  10. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on August 18, 2011 at 8:49 am

The interesting thing about Runzler’s fastball is that even at 96 mph, it was obviously very hittable. One of the announcers, kruk?, was saying about how “live” it was and all the movement and such. and yet the hitters didn’t seem to have much trouble with it. It would have been nice to see him earlier in a game where he could experiment with all his pitches and not have the “closer” vibe going. He should have experimented anyway but i could see getting all pumped up to show you can close as opposed to just pitching. He just doesn’t strike me as the answer. would prefer to see Surkamp. The phillies and the braves seem to be doing well with rookies (worley, the guy two nights ago) that didn’t have a big minor league track record. so why not toss him out there? Let sanchez’s ankle heal. Heck, let them all heal. This is not the critical stretch of the season. In the long run I think we’d be better off completely healthy (and even a little rested!) for the stretch drive. As for the ninth, we’re just going to have to make do with affeldt and lopez and I assume cassilla. Affeldt looks like he might be forcing it a bit.

Elbow inflammation for Romo and Wilson is very bad news. Elbow tendons generally have a very long healing time for inflammatory issues, and are very easily re-inflamed by even moderate use during that period, resulting in a re-set of the healing timetable. You don’t push through elbow inflammation – it pushes back and always wins.

Positive public statements aside, the team is going to be having some serious internal discussions about risking Wilson’s and Romo’s 2012 for the sake of an already injury decimated 2011.

Well, I’ve thought Wilson wasn’t right all year, and thought it could very well be injury… as far as last night, if you’re a fucking idiot and presume Runzler would be the new closer, a good SS would drop a pop up, etc… God luv ya. Last night was hardly a typical scenario. Obvifuckously, Bochy thought a 6-run lead was a good time to give Runzler an inning. I’m sure he won’t do it again but that’s on Runzler, not the decision. Runzler would never have been in in a save situation. I’ll add that Affeldt motherfucking destroyed McCann for the K. They won, they beat a good pitcher, scored 7…our usual perps should be ectstatic, it’s the kind of game you’d get often if they traded pitching for your “big bat”..well, they’d lose a bunch of ’em, too…

What??? It is not going to be closer by who is pitching the best between those two??? I could have sworn that I read that on the Splash somewhere? Soph someone had to propose this.

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on August 18, 2011 at 11:41 am

i’m assuming you mean me. i wasn’t proposing runzler as the closer, i was suggesting that, because of the situation, you know bottom of the ninth and all, HE (runzler, not bochy) would look at it as being the closer. Therefore he was trying to be the overpowering, “closer” when it might have been better all around if he had worked more on being a “pitcher”. bit of a difference. nothing to do with bochy. Everything to do with runzler. and yes the drop didn’t help, as i noted previously. but affeldt came in tuesday and walked his batter, to his total disgust, and was extremely animated (pissed?) at the end of the game last night. so maybe he’s trying too hard. but as i believe i also mentioned, it looks like a combo of him and casilla and lopez, with bruce probably going with whoever gets hot.

  15. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 10:30 am

If you think about it at all, last night probably doesn’t go down much differently if Wilson had been available. Bochy still starts the inning with Runzler, Dan fucks up, Brian comes in and we all have coronaries before he strikes out McCann on corner heat. SOP..

  16. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 18, 2011 at 10:43 am

My guess is that Runzler’s next outing will be in around the sixth inning in a blowout game ~ one way or t’ other. He won’t be called in to replace another pitcher with men on base. If he passes that test maybe he’ll stick around awhile longer. My preference for the callup was Dan Otero, who, unusual for this team, has pretty much pinpoint control with a superlative BB-K ratio. Of course, he doesn’t possess the ‘stuff’ Runzler is said to have, but sometimes those guys get the stuffing knocked outta them.

Ewisco notes that the Braves have done well so far with young pitching callups. If there’s any lagtime on Wilson getting back maybe Heath Hembree, currently at Richmond and with a pile of saves between there and San Jose, should get the call. Seems like the Angels sprung a young hurler, Eff something Rodriguez, in ’02. Dude came pretty much outta nowhere and was basically lights out. Ain’t saying that’s gonna occur with Hembree, should he get the call. But something to keep in mind.

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 10:57 am

The scouting report on Otero shows average at best stuff, good control, and a “big heart”…he’s just not the kind of guy who gets a shot before a Runzler. May not be fair, but that’s the way it is, everywhere…

  18. eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on August 18, 2011 at 11:25 am

there has been much talk about BW being injured. I see him as a physical guy. So that means he knows how his body feels/works. He has always stretched his outings and mostly wins. The Gs just gave him a contract extension, meaning to me, he is as healthy as can be.

  19. Sierra Nevada's avatar Sierra Nevada said, on August 18, 2011 at 11:37 am

I’ve only seen Runzler in a couple of Fresno games. From what I could see in that small sample, hitters had a tough time making really good contact, but had an easy time taking pitches. For whatever reason, hitters seem to be able to lay off a good many of his pitches out of the strike zone. From what I could see, it is not so much a control issue as a pitch recognition issue, I think that his stuff is not at all deceptive.

  20. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 18, 2011 at 11:39 am

Wondering if Bochy shouldn’t consider switching Ross and Belt in the L.U. Except for his two-dinger explosion vs the Fish, Belt hasn’t yet begun to hit on his current ride. Of course he has been facing Philadelphia and Atlanta pitching. Not the smoothest gig. One thing he has done is draw walks, like the one on which he scored last night. What he has NOT done is any slash hitting. He has four HRs and only 3 doubles. That is a statistical anomaly. Because of his selectivity and ability to draw walks Belt’s OBP is at a pretty healthy .321 while his BA is only .209. League team average is .318 with both Florida and Arizona at that level. Ross, by contrast, can drive in runs, but blows hot and cold as a hitter so his OBP is not that high for the leadoff slot. Yes, i know the argument that Brandon was brought up this time to add a bit of muscle to the middle of the order and after Wandy Rodriguez i do expect him to start belting again against the Stros hurlers in the second and third games. For these next two games, though, he might be better fitted to the leadoff position than in an RBI slot. Belt gets on base about as well as anyone on the squad not named Panda and he is a threat to steal.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2011 at 12:18 pm

SN, what I’ve seen, all Runzler can throw with any consistency is the fastball. It’s pretty straight (fast, but straight), therefore easy to see if it’s in or out of the strike zone. His slider was never even remotely close yesterday. Easy takes.

    • Sierra Nevada's avatar Sierra Nevada said, on August 18, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Yeah, everything I’ve seen of him has been of hitters succeeding by laying off of pitches. He puts guys on base, then somebody guesses right on his fastball. I can see what the Giants like about Runzler, though. Dude throws hard.

But that didn’t come into play until this year. Again, maybe I don’t know what the hell I’m looking at but it appeared he threw zero cha’s in 2010.
I’m not sure why I’m dwelling on this

  24. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on August 18, 2011 at 1:35 pm

it just seemed to me that the rookie, freeman?, had been fouling off fastballs, the cutter wasn’t working, full-count, bases-loaded, crowd in an uproar . . . why not drop a change in there? he later admitted he was looking fastball. so that got me to thinking. i’m sure tf hopes i stop that soonest!

  25. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 18, 2011 at 1:49 pm

ML hitters can and do drive blazing fastballs unless these pitches are skewed by the sparks they emit along the way. If that’s all Runzler has right now, he goes back down to get replaced by Dan Otero, who as Twin points out, apparently lacks the raw stuff. So he needs to and apparently does compensate via deception, changing speeds and pinpoint location. At least he’s not likely to walk anyone in a critical situation. If Otero does not prove to have the right moxy, Plan B is Heath Hembree, an ambulatory strikeout machine, though without even AAA experience.

Somebody mentioned here a little while back that they had not seen BW’s slider in a while. I remember he did have a really good, downward biting slider he would use on occasion earlier in the year. Way better action on it that his fairly rare sliders in earlier years. Now, not much or not at all of that pitch. Maybe the bad wing explains the absence of that pitch, and maybe he’s been hurting for a while…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 2:22 pm

  29. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 2:13 pm

He always threw the 4-seam. It’s the two seam that’s new. As far as a change up, they talked about it last spring, maybe he’s thrown it a couple times in his life, but it’s not part of his repertoire and never has been. He has the two fastballs and the slutter. That is either the cutter or the slider or both depending on who’s doing the talking. According to Gameday he threw 14 fucking sliders in his last outing, so whoever said they hadn’t seen it is totally FOS. He throws it too much is his problem, and could account for the arm woes- it’s the toughest pitch on the arm.

twin, you’re our resident researcher. rowand is one of the league’s best pinch hitters i think. that is, i thought i saw a stat to that effect (.3 something). it also seems to me that he got off to a fairly decent start (great hit off the wall to win the opener?). if you subtract all that, and look at his average since june 1, is it the black hole, when he starts a game, that i think it is?

or would it be easier to just exclaim that rowand sucks as a starter and let you prove me wrong 🙂

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 6:52 pm

It’s quite all right to say he sucks if it pleases you..he had a good April- and he ‘s been a pretty fair PH. And a he’s a good defensive OF.That’s about it. About par for a 5th OFer. He’s batted more than he would have because of injuries and ineffectiveness from others.Last year he pretty much sat the last couple months- they had Burrell, Torres, and Ross producing

no, no. not that he doesn’t but that’s not my point. I’m just curious as to his average as a starter. I was hoping to lure you in to doing my work for me but I guess that’s not going to work. I was sort of thinking along the lines that good pinch hitters (in this case rowand) need to get some ab’s occasionally to keep sharp. but that doesn’t explain what’s going on with deRosa. if he’s your pinch hitter late in the game, like tonight, how is it that you don’t get him more spot starts? Are they just afraid that he’s one swing away from blowing out the wrist again so trying to limit the actual swings? and sort of like nate last year, the gamer has become a very effective ph and has some pop in that role. so i see the need to get him the occassional spot start. but lord he seems to really struggle as a starter.

Giants could easily lose the third game out of the four, but I just didn’t see miles and miles of difference btw the two. Good pitching from both sides, low scoring well played games that were decided by one hit and went down to the wire.

Willie: We also have to bear in mind that SF is playing with one hand tied behind its back with all the injuries. Spose everyone is all too aware of that fact, but the point is that if this team gets anywhere close to full strength anytime soon, even the toughest of opponents may run into some pretty nasty going. I’d rather have seen Belt playing instead of Rowand tonight and batting leadoff, with Ross in the enforcer position batting 5th. I know Bochy likes to keep his boys fresh, but Row-Row may be best relegated to a P.H. role.

For this offense, how many synonyms are there for “pathetic”?
Timmeh makes one mistake to a HOFer and a far stronger overall hitting lineup, outpitches the opposition pitcher, still loses. Ridiculous. I really don’t want to see Tejada anymore. He sucks at the plate, pure and simple. At least they avoided the sweep. That’s a plus these days…

So who’s gonna blame Timmy for this 1-0 loss? Not I, said the cat. This one goes squarely on Bochy for not fully loading our lineup gun as he well as he could have. Yep. We had this one coming.

Why Bonehead doesn’t play for a run I dunno. First inning, Ross on 2nd and no outs, no bunting to third. Nope. That one run, especially with Timmeh going, is huge. Bochy needs to get a clue. Get runs while you can. You’re not fuckin’ Earl Weaver with Boog Powell at 1B…

i think i said earlier that they’ve been doing a good job recently of getting that run home, especially in the first.

      • willieD's avatar willieD said, on August 18, 2011 at 7:12 pm

that AB hurt, but it wasn’t his fault. He lined an outside pitch just foul down the right field line that would have scored ross standing up, then got called out on the ball at his ankles. That kind of night.
And for anyone who calls the giants effort at the plate pathetic, the braves haven’t exactly whacked the ball around the yard last few days either.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I hope to hell the historians don’t waste the paper to record our ineptitude. It’s not worth it.

Tomorrow will be the first time I have seen the Giants live since Game 4 of the World Series in Arlington, which set me back about $300….Bought a club level ticket for tomorrow night from a guy at work for $5…Yes, that’s right $5!
The recent storm of injuries has certianly put a bit of a damper on the series…I was really looking forward to seeing Beltran back in Houston…Now I get to settle for Keppinger, but that’s okay…Tomorrow against the lefty Wandy should be the only true test the Giants face…Saturday’s matchup is intriguing in that you will see two of the Majors youngest starting pitchers in Bumgarner vs Lyles…Lyles has a huge upside, but really should be in AA at this early in his career…He has really struggled thus far and the Giants should take advantage of such…We should see Henry Sosa on Sunday, who appears to have just a fastball and not much else…Giants have always had great success at Minute Maid, and despite the injuries, anything less than two wins will be a Texas sized bummer.

  69. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Criminy, Snarkk. you bunt in the 7th when yer running out of time.

You don’t purposely give up and out after a leadoff double. 2-3-4 need to do their jobs. They didn’t, and they didn’t score. Blame Cabrera, Pablo, and Huff, But no manager in his right mind bunts in the 1st inning..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 18, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Chuck, are you paying attention? This team CANNOT SCORE. It’s the WORST team in MLB in scoring. A man on second with no outs is rare. Move him over regardless of the innning…

  70. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 8:44 pm

Again, this mental deficient presumes that the runner is moved successfully on the bunt and he also presumes that the bunt is the only way to get a guy from second to third. That’s total baseball 101 failure.

Waiting for Godot? I’m a big Sam Beckett fan myself. But I have no patience to wait. Especially for some boob named, Godot. I’ll take Beckett’s “Endgame” any day. The main character in that play is blind. Just like the hitters in the Giants lineup.

  73. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm

“certainly not hit with RISP all year:.
Sandoval has. But they didn’t have to. Remember 4 sac flies yesterday? The protocol with no out is to first try moving the runner by going to the right side (which Cabrera tried, hitting a liner just foul to right). After Cabrera failed, the other two obviously just swing away unless you’re now going for 1 and 2 out bunts. This not to even mention that even if they get the one, Snarkllefuck bitches because they went for one after we lose 2-1 instead of 1-0.
