A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A Few Random Thoughts Before I Head Back to Room B

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 26, 2011

Baggs Blog noted the short list of players who had at least 200 K’s, a sub 2.75 ERA and a losing record.

Man, after taking a look at those 6 guys with the worst luck in the world I decided that Timmy didn’t have it nearly as bad as I thought. Check out good ol’ Ed Walsh who lost 20 games in 1910 while posting a 1.27 ERA. That’s insane. He went 40-15 in 1908. Oh well, different time, different game……….

It looks like Franchez finally bothered to show up to watch a game in Arizona (he lives there and is rehabbing, not sure why a guy under contract for NEXT year didn’t make all three games of that series). Once again, he might not be ready for Opening Day. It seems like every time that dude goes under the knife he waits about a month too long to get the surgery done. Who will the back up be? The obvious answer looks to be Keppinger. There will be something weird about basically offering him arbitration just to back up Sanchez. He’s a starter, or should be, on this club. He’s slumped lately but I am certain that has had something to do with a hand injury he suffered in Houston running into the first baseman. He’s a .300 hitter and this team needs all of those they can find. Anyway, he’s not a shortstop, so really he’s not versatile enough to play anything other than 2nd base. Actually, he’ll probably see a lot of time there in 2012 (assuming we offer him a deal). Franchez will be breaking down right around a week after Sabean trips over himself to offer him another extension……

Have a great day. I’m B-lining back to B…….

Remember that Fruckie tried for the longest time to avoid surgery. Unsettling he was there for only game, but I do not know the reasons or circumstances. His wife is pretty hot; maybe he was “rehabbing” with her.

I hope this my last look back on this year’s results from me, but I’ll simply restate the obvious: not having a full-strength SS or C really hurt. With respect to catcher, I think Sabean’s heart overtook head. That may be a silly statement. But I think they felt great loyalty to Eli and felt it honorable to give him a shot. And when Sabean looked around at what was available, he folded. Man, I’d’ve taken Paulino, Torrealba, you name ’em. But who knows what other teams were asking for.

    The Morning After.

    See ya later.

Are we not assuming Franchez was the only guy in on the decision to try rehab? The media accounts I remember said that the Giants were of the opinion to go conservative and have him try an extended rehab first because surgery meant he clearly could not come back late this season…

Yeah, maybe. 2 surgeries running now though where it might cost him the start of the season

    MLB hitting ranks . . . Runs – 29th; Hits – 26th; Doubles – 13th; Triples – 24th; HR – 22nd; TB – 25th; RBI – 30th; AVG – 28th; OBP – 29th; SLG – 26th; and, OPS – 27th.

Only in doubles were we “middle of the pack.” Probably due to our ball park more than anything else. Regardless, if we had been “middle of the pack” for the rest of the hitting categories, we would have won the division by at least 10 games. Instead, go look at the teams we were hitting with . . . Yep, Seattle, Minnesota, and San Diego.

Any questions? I didn’t think so.

As therapy, if I get a check from a client this week I’m thinking of buying some Giants stuff, maybe even some WS2010 swag. Plus, by doing so I’ll help build up the kitty for winter acquisitions. (If I’m really thinking like that, I’m a fool.) (Or they can use it for Neukom’s goodbye party.) (Enough already with the parens.)

  4. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 26, 2011 at 8:38 am

Interesting note about “swag”. The way the revenue sharing works, each item the Giants sell is split (the profit) 30 different ways to each team in the league. I didn’t know this till I heard Shulman disclose that on KNBR this week.

Feeling like procrastinating my work right now. I’m looking to the wall for some motivation to get past it. Not working. I think I’ll transcribe the two quotes from Blade that are on my wall and share them here.

Anais Nin said, “Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living….” and…”The dream was always running ahead of me. To catch up, to live for a moment with it, that was the miracle…” –I think about this quote every time I think back to last November 1st and see that pic of me crying like a girl after we won the world series.

From Carlos Castaneda: “The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.” — this quote is great. I’ve got one next to it that compliments it: “You are getting better or you are getting worse. You never stay the same.” —helps me roll out of bed with a purpose each morning….
Now that I’ve blown the collective mind of the blog with these pearls, I will go find something else to do that isn’t work related…….

    • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 26, 2011 at 12:01 pm

I have a murky dream of Anais Nin, buddy of Henry Miller. In 1973, my buddy T. and I in the middle of the night, falling-down drunk, knock on the door of SU students who happened to be living in the downtown Holiday Inn. Well, we didn’t knock. T. shoulder-banged against the door. This was the door of D., whom I had met in Europe while w/ T. A month or so earlier we may have had a fling. We barged our way in, insistent. Donna and her roomie protested they were studying for the GRE or something. We cavalierly asked for and got booze. Despite their vehement protests, we stayed, camping out like rajahs in their beds. Her roomie, whom I think I attempted to pair up with, had a saturnalian display of oceanic-sized breasts. One of the girls was reading “A Spy in the House of Love, by Nin. The girls left, furious, in the morning. We stayed, T. and I. Drinking, farting, and, me, reading Nin. I months later passed by D. on the street and got a death-kill stare. I would not have recognized roomie except by sweltering oceans of bosom, maybe. I owe some sort of amends, surely, but some trespasses are best left alone.

As for Casteneda, wasn’t his whole shtick found to be all conjured up, like an LSD dream?

Bad hangover day ~ so to speak. Now it’s all about next year. Giants are far from alone in that. Many decisions will need to be made, perhaps foremost being SS. Hoping Sabean & Co. don’t overpay for the much injured Jose Reyes, as much as he seems to address both leadoff and shortstop deficiencies. After his first blowout, will there be enough trust in Surkamp as #5 that Sanchez will go on the trading block? Giants have little else by way of trade candidates likely to bring in needed improvements for the team’s offense. Known through his minor league career as a low walk to strikeout pitcher, Surkamp was obviously not trusting his stuff against the Snakes and went all picky-picky, walking men left and right. Not his usual M.O.

Much attention will be paid to Gary Brown over the winter and into S.T. He dominated High-A. at San Jose. My guess is that he gets the long look against M.L. pitching in the Spring and then starts at Richmond, where he will be very closely monitored by the development and scouting staff. High performance in the pitching-rich Eastern League and he could be in The Show by the Break.

Franchez continues to be cause for concern as BF points out. Will he be ready by March or April? If there is an extension it should be readiness and performance based. Return of Posey is a must if the team is to rise again. He is desperately needed as both catcher and team leader. Will he be gun-shy after the punko incident? Will he buck it up and take command? Third injury concern is Panda ~ that and his tendency to put on weight. I’m sure he will be under an intense regimen again off-season, which should, i would argue, include a full-time nutritionist/conditioning team. These three guys are key to the team developing any kind of offense next season.

Meanwhile, in the remaining three of four meaningless games the team plays this season it would be very good form for the guys to recover a bit of pride by taking two of three at home from the Rox. A sweep might be a bit much to expect from this dispirited bunch.

Well, who will be the SS? It won’t be Crawford if they don’t think he’ll hit, and remember he hasn’t ever hit above A ball. At least with Kepp and Fruckie they’d finally have combo who can hit a bit. Jeff last put in any regular time at SS in 2009– he had a .980 fielding percentage and above average range. Maybe they could afford to carry Crawford if Posey, Fruckie, Belt, Huff, Panda, and a new outfielder ALL hit..the two best prospects are Adrianza and Panik, although Joe is already being projected as a second baseman. I don’t see Keppinger going for reserve duty quite yet. He’s just making a little over 2 mill and he’s arb eligible- he’ll be a bargain.
As far as feeling poorly for Tim, Blade listed some gfuys with careers missing significant and deserving achievements- Tim has a couple CYs, he pitched a WS clincher… I’ll cry for Argentina. And the many men who never even had the oppoprtunity our guys did last year.

I could be wrong, but I bet Rollins stays in Philly for at least another year. Of course, they could make a play for Reyes. But otherwise I don’t think they’re sold on Rollins’ understudy. And if you guys watch Phils enough (I watch Giants in a Philly sports bar), you’ll see Rollins and Manuel ear-to-ear a good bit. Rollins is a ‘baseball guy’ who I think is a manager in training. Not that they’d keep him around just for that, but Philly doesn’t dispose of stars as easily as New York teams do.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 26, 2011 at 10:48 am

Agree Ed. I doubt Rollins leaves, especially since he had an outstanding year, without getting dinged up too much (compared to the year before when he was on the DL for long stretches of the season).

Flav, the Castaneda quote is my favorite too and I didn’t hear it until 5-6 years ago. Ironically, I had heard similar quotes and more important, I was living my life that way, but nevertheless, I had never heard of Castaneda or his writings/quotations.

However, my favorite is from an old lady I met approximately 25 years ago (when my entire life was a shit sandwich and my MO was to whine about it) . . . She said, “God moves mountains, but you got to bring a shovel.” Stuck with me every day of my life. Moreover, I don’t whine about what the world dishes out because it doesn’t matter . . . Only my attitude and perception of it does.

I’ve followed him all year and it would take a big trade to extract him from Baltimore. Yeah, Twin, I think they also just extended him. It’s a good question about Gillaspie. In the few ABs I’ve seen of his, he seems to have good poise and an idea what he wants to do. But it’s a no-go at 3rd; Pablo is working his way toward a Gold Glove. He is just so athletic. They are left with a number of ‘AAAA players’ who play multiple positions, e.g., Pill, Gillaspie, Belt, which they might only sort out in spring training. Unless they bring in some FA.

Speaking of the O’s, they’ve been playing the kids over the last couple months and a young OF named Matt Angle has produced some memorable work, from steals to home-runs. Saturday night he hit a HR early vs. Detroit’s Verlander, then in top of 9th got a squeeze down to win the game, in a lefty vs. lefty situation and on a vicious curve. He may not amount to much, but you’ve got to appreciate good work when you see it.

This won’t happen but I’d like to see the Giants enlist Bonds to work with Ford this offseason. Both in reading pitches and reading pitchers. If Ford could hit for average and be a better base stealer, he’d jump to the head of the class as a top of the order guy.
I know, I know – wish in one hand and shit in the other to see which one fills up the fastest.

Ford will be 26 this week. That’s old for a speed guy with the look of a minor league lifer. As a guy dependent on speed, at his age if he could hit for average and be a better stealer, he already would be doing both. The Giants rarely let him hit, there must be a reason. They need real MLB quality outfielders with speed and high OBP, and/or pop, and/or hit .280+ — he’s not in that room…

Quotes, bon mots and words to live by. Here’s a matched set: First, my H.S. German teacher, Lorrine Grosz, gave each of us in the class a maxim by a German poet or philosopher. Whether this one comes from Heine, Schiller or Goethe, i’m not sure: “Wer im lehrnen stille steht, wie ein Krebs der ruckwarts geht”. (Whoever stands still in learning goes backwards like the crab). Doubtful whether he was acquainted the the quote, but Bob Dylan translated the words into American. (he was, no longer is, IMHO, a great channeler): “He not busy being born is busy dying.”

Loo’s comment about Pagan and Pelfrey . . . Yeah, I like that deal and you’re right about Pelfrey. Pelfrey is simply too hittable. Unless he develops some magical pitch he will never be a staff ace. Even for the Mets. They rumored him to potentially close but that will never happen. His K rate is bad, he walks too many, and he has hittable pitches. He would never bite you back ala Nolan Ryan. I think Pelfrey’s biggest upside at this point in his career is if he evoles into a Livan Hernandez type and eats innings in the middle of the rotation with a below avg K rate and serviceable win total. Last year, the 27-year-old right-hander posted a 10.02 ERA and a 2.66 WHIP in five July starts, undoing all of his good work from the first half, which included a 4-0 record and a 0.69 ERA in April. In fact, if you exclude July, he had a 2.95 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP for the season. Go figure.

The Met’s pitcher I would give my left nut for is R.A. Dickey . . . He finishes the season at 8-13 with a solid 3.28 ERA. He had a 1.23 WHIP. This dude was gold on my Fantasy League team for ERA and WHIP (less so for SO and wins).

I should have noted above regarding Dickey – the reason he didn’t win is the same reason Giants pitchers don’t win . . . LITTLE OR NO HITTING SUPPORT.

    Dear Giants Fan,

The best part of every road trip is the moment I sink into my seat on the team plane and say to myself, “We’re going home.” I know what’s waiting for us at AT&T Park: Our reinforcements. Our fans.

I look up at that sea of orange-and-black — at the Panda and Baby Giraffe hats, the beards, the Timmy wigs, the scarves and towels, the poster board signs that say “Believe!” – and feel as if no one can beat us. The incredible energy generated from 41,000 stomping, cheering, passionate Giants fans is like having a tenth man on the field.

Tonight, the Giants will set a record for the highest single-season attendance in the franchise’s 128-year history — 3,303,000 surpassing the 3,277,244 set in 2001. Tonight also marks the 79th consecutive sell-out of the 2011 season. These attendance milestones simply demonstrate what our players, coaches and front office already know: We have the best and most devoted fans in baseball.

On behalf of everyone at the Giants, thank you.

I am writing not only to thank you, but also to make sure you know that your support makes a difference. Your thunderous cheers for Romo or Wilson or Casilla to get the third out late in a game – they matter. Your rally caps, your “Beat LA” chants, your “Get Well” signs for Buster, your willingness to weather cold nights on Orange Fridays – they all matter. You could have given up on us this season. Wracked by injuries, we’ve struggled to score runs. But just as you were there during last year’s magical World Series season, you’re with us still – a show of loyalty that continues to inspire us as coaches and players.

In baseball, the difference between winning and losing can be as slight as a bunt that stays fair instead of rolling foul. A team is always looking for an edge. Opposing players and coaches tell us all the time that AT&T Park gives us an edge. They’re right but not completely. It’s the not park. It’s the people in it.

I look forward to seeing you over these last few days of 2011 and for seasons to come. Thank you for helping us draw out the best in ourselves.

    Sincerely,
    Bruce Bochy

. . . and this Flapper thanks you Bruce!

  28. dirtnrocksnreno's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on September 26, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Twin, I think so too. Doesn’t he go to arbitration this year. What will he get $6M? Maybe a little more? I posted after the World Series that it was the time to move him but now? I don’t think so. Not much value and he can still compete for the 5 spot. I’ll take him over Surkamp. Plus, I can see him rebounding next year.

  29. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on September 26, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Dirrrrrty over Surkamp? Well, I would absolutely gamble on dirrrrrty to bounce back than for Surkamp to ever be any good. If given a season full of starts I suspect he’d make us miss Zito. Speaking of Zits, I think it’s a slam dunk that he at least starts in the bullpen next season. He can be the last pitcher out of the BP until he proves he can’t do it. Then just 60 day DL him and maybe just release him in 2013. Then don’t forget the 7 mil buy out in 2014! Who knows, maybe Sabes picks up the option? Lqtm.

Don’t be surprised if the Giants go after a starter. They have 3 sure things in the rotation that better stay healthy. After that you’re hoping Vogelsong repeats and Dirty bounces back. Expectations for Surkamp & Zito are zero.

When’s the last time that happened?

The thing that gets me is his remarks about not being able to ride the coat tails of the 2005 World Series victory forever. Sports is a tough business. I know Bruce Bochy could not have a more opposite demeanor, but I’m stuck on him as manager. I just can’t see any one else. i can’t help it.

I almost don’t think I can write those stats down without them combusting back into my keyboard. I don’t even know what that means. I feel the same way about Whitey’s last 23 months. I can dig that. I actually like the dude as a person. As a pro-baseball player? Well, a full season of this shit has blown my mind. Whitey has made a nice living and won a WS ring over the last 3 seasons. He hit the lotto. But that ticket gets torn up in 3 games………..

Granted, the depleted Colorado lineup may be worse than that of the Giants right now, but nevertheless three hits and no runs over 6 innings signals a damned good job by Vogelsong ~ a quality start by any metric and in fact, the best start since Cainer’s most recent outing.

  46. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 26, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Most times I’m not on the blog continuously so have to read-in when I get here. Again, Flav, thanks for hosting this community of Gigantes believers. Most times I enjoy the back and forth, almost always I come away with some insights, and often it’s just really funny to read. Tonight had some killer posts: Dirt’s deadpan 2:38, Flav’s 6:26, and others had me howling.

Pawlie, back to your 12:05: I can’t remember whether it was the Philly sports bar I watched the pennant clincher in or more of a local dive next door–but I did show up to rub it in that night. After all, these are Philly people living in DC, so relatively emasculated. Although there was one monster dude in there during a game from our last visit to Philly and he was calling for the hitter to bash it off MadBum’s face. Yeah, class act. So I told him that wasn’t cool, and ‘you know, that kind of shit catches up to you in the end.’ It’s all in the approach–I stepped away, he went back to his pitcher of Bud Light. But I was definitely in there when we won the Series because I jumped up when Edgar went deep and nearly hit my head on the TV hanging above. Still amazing to me…
