I Miss Last Fall
Back to Philly
It would have been great to close it out in front of the hometown crowd but it just wasn’t going to happen. Philly played great, Madson was especially sickening in the 8th.
If Philly can beat Lincecum and Dirrrrty and Cain in three consecutive games, my hat is off to them and good luck in the World Series. But I don’t think for a second that that’s going to happen……
Last night I just kept thinking how COOL post season baseball is. I’m living and dying on every pitch, every hit. As I watched the game at my friend’s sportsbar last night it was great to feel the camaraderie in the room. Of course there were tons of jersey’s worn but there were guys with fake freaking black beards on. In a bar. 40 miles away from the park….Everywhere I go, almost everyone I pass on the street is all about the Giants right now. Bandwagon jumpers? Of course. But a community has come together and that’s the best part of all this…..
So I wasn’t sweating last night’s loss for a second. The totality of all of this is just too delicious to not enjoy. I’m loving every single second of it, before the games, during the games, after the games. It’s all good right now…….
The prophetic Dennis…”Taco boy or Alex Smith…” both of whom enjoying impressive 2011 bounce backs. It is neat to read the comments from last season. I could read this stuff every day…2011 post season? No.
Dammit, Willie. You beat me to the punch. I had just copied my comment and was about to post it. The “Taco Boy” reference was in response to Ted posting the Chron’s article about Pablo being spotted late at night at the Taquería.
This from last October, 22 at 7:24 PM: Were they chicken or beef? That could make all the difference in the world when trying to get back and tag third base. I was having a heated discussion this morning with a pal of mine about who is the better player/who do you want on your team “going forward” (I hate that fucking term)/ who would end up having the better career—Pablo or Alex Smith? That incident isn’t going to help my defense for “Taco Boy.”
I think you know my answer.
Del mar, you were hardly the only guy who doubted Pablo this time last year…I remember the reports of Pablo enjoying late night fare. Might have been puerco too. Where better than in SF?
I stayed there one summer in a freak hotel in mid 70s right on Mission just south of Army as it was known then. I shared a room with a buddy while riding out unemployment scam before college started back up again late August. There were 4 bars within walking distance, and a guy from Mexico and his wife ran a restaurant close enough to stumble into, and often let the local residents run up a tab until the cash came through. And the menudo was fabulous…and much needed, often.
Correct, he was hardly the only one doubting “Taco Boy”, nor was he the only one using insulting and ethnically bigoted “nicknames” and ignoring the difficulties a young man was having in his personal life and career. If the guys who slumped in 2011 had as good a year as “El Gordo” did in 2010, we probably would have won the division. At least Denny didn’t threaten Pablo’s life, though…
You didn’t answer the question: Who will end up having a better career, Pablo or Alex?
You are laboring under a misperception if you think that a response to a question from you is mandatory. You’ve been shown to be both wrong and slanderous about both. STFU.
As John Patrick McEnroe once exclaimed, “answer the question, jerk!”
fight?
Why don’t you contribute to the thread about “dads”, Dennis? It doesn’t have to be *your* dad. Any will do. Or talk about your Mom. It might takle your mind off of the third ranked QB in the NFL.
On the one hand, Pablo can’t throw the deep out as well as Alex, on the other, Smith doesn’t go to his left as well. It’s not a question that can be answered. How about this for 100 bucks, far more relevant: better QBR this year: Smith or Romo?
Make it a thousand you tight wads!
What a wienie Romo is. The Cowboys are “going to win a Super Bowl someday”…good call, who’s the QB gonna be, Tony?
It was implied that Romo was talking about winning a SB while he was the quarterback.
“This team is going to win a Super Bowl at some point.” “And when we look back, we’ll know who was on what side of the fence during those tough moments. ”
THIS team. Not the Cowboys, but this team. When WE look back. Again, not the Cowboys, but we.
I’m calling upset this week. ‘Boys > Pats in Foxborough snapping the Patriots 19-game reg. season home winning streak. Huge day for Romo as he leads the Cowboys and both of my fantasy teams to wins this weekend. My fantasy teams are all I really care about.
He probably meant Kitna– don’t put all your likker money on Dallas this weeekend, Denny..hell, even Garret is getting off the Romo wagon.
Hahaha….the Cowboys are pathetic.
The Comeback Player awards were announced yesterday. If Buster can return strong and healthy next season, I would think he’d be the odds-on favorite to win it in the NL considering the horrific injury he sustained. Wainwright would be another possibility, although coming off Tommy John surgery, he might not even be ready for the start of the season.
That Philly series is pretty fuzzy for me- had a seizure before Game 2- maybe Denny will attribute it to watching Alex against Oakland that day 😉 .. it really wasn’t until the WS that I had my half-wits about me…I did pick them to beat Texas in 5- citing, of course, the pitching. And you know what- I like this years team to beat Texas or Detroit in 5…
Alex played alright that day. Couple of TDs if I recall. It was Jason Campbell who stunk up the joint that day at the ‘Stick. He played about as bad as the field looked. Quagmire.
“Quagmire” inside the mind of Dennis!
I think it’s a pleasure having two intelligent QBs running the 49ers and Raiders…
Here’s to offfensive strategists as well. Cable wasn’t exactly a creative genius, but Hue made him look good.
Harbaugh and Singletary? Like nuclear fusion compared to bows and arrows.
I have no idea about the off field issues, but I thought Cable did a good job. I think the jury is still out on Hue, they seem a pretty mercurial bunch- another 8-8, just a more exciting 8-8 wouldn’t surprise me.
I’m not sure if Hue is ready for this gig. He’s made some pretty big basic tactical decisions and he shows too much emotion on the field (except for the end of last weeks game 🙂 )
I know harbaugh is emotional too, but he’s proven he gas total control of the game. Hue’s last few plays in the Houston game were bad…
Sorry posting from the iPhone. “he’s made some pretty big BAD basic tactical decisions…”
Could be a little out of his league, we’ll see. I don’t think he’s ever head coached anywhere, has he?
I like his knbr shows, seems like a straight shooter….
I was surprised to hear that noise about being involved in the “football operations”, too. Man, don’t you have enough to do just coaching the team? They are competitive in a winnable division, but might be a year or more away. Defense needs a lot of work ,and still too many dumb penalties.
And Dennis, since you were so quick to post steve young’s response to picking your life partner over Smith, I’m sure you heard this week’s Young show. He still picked romo, but barely, for the right reasons. But the tide is shifting even for Young. He totally opened the door on believing this is real now and to get on board. I’m sure the concept of Young endorsing Smith had you doing a slow burn all night…,
The best part of his show this week was the very end when they started talking about Al Davis. Ralph and Tom asked if the story was true about Mike Shanahan ordering Elvis Grbac to hit Al in the head with a football during warm-ups. Steve said the story was true, but they had the particulars wrong. Without actually admitting it, Steve all but gave himself up. It was he who threw at Al’s head. Al ducked in time and gave Shanahan the finger.
I missed that part. And Shanahan is a huge, gigantic gaping pussy for ordering anyone to throw at an old man from 30 yards away. Shit, I could probably make that throw on the money at least half the time. Think about that. Shanahan, too big of a pussy to do anything on his own, orders his NFL QB to do it. I lost what teeny tiny respect for him I had when I heard that story this week……….
The wheels are falling off the Brewers’ wagon tonight.
On the other hand, San Jose St. is giving a good account of itself so far in their ESPN game with Hawaii.
I would like to see SJ State re-start their program. About 5 years ago (or more) it seemed they would give Stanford a run for their money. The game I saw, they played like a high school team. And small local teams who build good football programs are of great interest to the area……..
Greinke goes 5.2 without a K? That’s Surkamp territory. Oh well, he’s never pitched this deep into a season. But I think he also started late with a broken rib or something.
He’s a guy with noted emotional issues, the pressure could be getting to him. Or not, who knows. But that’s gotta be a factor in considering all of the other factors……..
Pretty much everything off him was cheapo.
Well, Titty Jr took him to the wall . . .
The Brewers look like a team that is nervous and playing tight, while the Cardinals are the happy-go-lucky, hey, nobody-expected-us-to-be-here team.
As I said, Pretty much everything off him was cheapo. Citing a well hit ball doesn’t change that, Chuckles. Only two runs were earned, another run scored on an infield grounder…
I stil think Milwaukee will win- LaRussa’s pen use will kill him yet.
Next game ~ or two ~ in Milwaukee. Cards cruised tonight. Milwaukee’s short suit is its rotation. For all the hitting magic Hairston reveals from time to time, his error tonight essentially sank Greinke, with two runs unearned outta the threespot. Brewers never caught up. Even their lumberyard went south against, believe it or not, Octavio Do Tell. If national fans thought last year’s postseason was strange, they hadn’t seen nothing yet.
the point, Twin, was that for a strikeout guy like Greinke, ZERO K’s in nearly 6 innings is bad. You might feel otherwise, I’m not sure. He wasn’t missing bats. That’s a failure for a strikeout guy and ZG absolutely qualifies into that category however deep you might run that list……….
this year, the lowest SO total he recorded in a game was 4 and he usually eclipsed that by many. Getting ZERO tonight? That’s either a possible injury or nerves, take you pick……..
I understood your point, mine was that he still wasn’t hit hard, I didn’t didn’t disagree with anything.
Three runs were the direct result of errors, another was on an infield grounder. I never said he had his good stuff, I just pointed out the fact that he gave up some cheap runs. There really isn’t an argument here.
Goodnight.
There’s no argument, you just conveniently left out his 0 strike out total. Anyone who understands sabermetrics ‘(as I know u do) would see that as a huge red flag for a SO pitcher which ZG definitely qualifies as….
I didn’t “conveniently” leave out shit- I was actually trying to help you out- It didn’t seem you watched the game. I did. He wasn’t hit hard, as I said. He gave up one untarnished run. The 0 strike outs MIGHT be a red flag for his next game, if there is one. For one game it may or may not mean anything. BTW, he only pitched 170+ innings, his fewest since 2007. His fastball last night was 92-95, same as in the AZ game when he K’ed 7 in 5 innings ( but didn’t pitch well either) . He actually pitched better last night than in his two previous postseason starts where he K’ed 13 in 11 innings.
Agree they didn’t hit Greinke hard, but Brewers also committed four errors and a couple near-errors. Only two runs of the five Greinke allowed were earned.
After my sour, late-night post to last night’s thread where I bitched about ESPN announcers, I remembered my GameDay Audio account still works. Tonight listened to Cards’ KMOX with Mike Shannon and John Rooney. Shannon’s got that voice that sounds affected, but if you hang with him a bit you realize he’s pretty good and knows his ball. Why became apparent when I read his bio–some of you may know this–he’s a former Card, 1962-1970, with performances in ’67 and ’68 Series. Anyway, it was a good broadcast, folksy, but occasionally critical. I’ll listen to the Brewers side Sunday.
whoo hoohooo
broadband and cable tv is back as of 11:33 bst
have not seen any playoff news in 10 days, but am now watching a replay of last night’s cards-brewers game
