Beating the Fillies and Heading to the World Series
Glory today, But Destiny Awaits…..
The plan was to run down to the end of the street…..
After Uribe hit that bomb and I hit my daughter in the eye with an errant high five (fixed with an ice cream sandwich), I decided that we needed to dial this down a bit and an end-of-the-game celebration needed to be choreographed. I was thinking quickly but not skillfully, so if the Giants won the Pennant, THE PLAN was: Tear ass out of the house and run down to the end of the street. We took off our socks since only a fool would run in the rain with their socks on…..
Despite the two walks, I felt like the first two outs came rather easily…..
Ryan Howand……
I watched the game at a friend’s house–great guy but he’s not really a baseball fan. As Howard came to the plate and the homerless stat came up he commented, “Why worry about this guy? He hasn’t hit a home run in 54 at bats.” I didn’t have time to explain to Dave the actual concern that Howard presented. So there we stood, three sockless chumps, praying for one more precious out. I don’t remember how many pitches it took, it’s all kind of a blank moment. But I do remember the most perfect pitch I’ve ever seen leave Bee-wheeezy’s hand….head toward the batter…..bend dramatically near the finish….and end up in Posey’s glove……
I didn’t see a second of what happened after that, I bolted out of Dave’s house, my daughter trailing behind me, running in bare feet through the rain down to the end of the street. I’ll never forget that moment, it was a release I’ve never felt before. I can’t even describe what it felt like. It was like I was experiencing every moment of the 2010 season with each stride I took. I was re-living every hit, ever win, every loss, just….everything.
As I held Katie’s hand on the way back to Dave’s house (Dave broke our fellowship and didn’t join us in successful execution of *THE PLAN*) I was thinking about Keith Law. If you’ve never read KLAW or listened to his live chats you should give it a whirl some time. He’s unbelievably smart, knows every stat imaginable, and translates the game brilliantly to the common fan. He’s also completely full of shit. He hates the Giants and has spent the last 2 years telling the world how bad they are and what a horrible GM Brian Sabean is. So as we walked back to Dave’s, I was wondering what KLAW was doing at that moment. I was fairly certain he wasn’t running through a nighttime storm in his bare feet. Has he finally accepted how wrong he was about this team? KLAW and all his national cronies have piled on the Giants and Sabean RELENTLESSLY for years now. Yet here we are, going to the World Series. There has never been a greater feeling of satisfaction than I had last night, celebrating my team’s victory in the rain with my daughter and knowing that the “KLAW’s” of the world had nothing but boring, dry feet to walk with……
We did it, my friends, we got here. Here we are. We are here. Don’t forget how you felt in the moment last night. When life sucks, people are pissing you off, nothing is going right…. take yourself back to that moment. No matter what happens next week we will always have that moment. It’s attached to my soul. There aren’t words invented that can explain how proud I am to be a Giants fan this morning…..
So Tony LaRussa has a dye job? What’s next…….a face lift? Times are changing even in baseball.
Here’s the link to Craig’s post that night, so you can also see other comments

Funny, I like SF in 5 over either AL team, THIS year.
San Jose St. pulled out the last second victory in a very entertaining game last night. Very cool for them get the win on national TV.
Stanford’s on the Versus Network at 4:30.
Yeah, very cool. It’s been a long time since they could hang with supremely arrogant and annoying Fresno st, which used to be conference main power. All those guys too dumb to get into the Pac 10 used to kill Jose, like Marquez Pope and their speedy wide outs. Just another reason I love boise, because they kick Fresno ass regular, like this year.
Wazzu has two good QBs, this might be 45-35…or 55-25. Furd has tougher opponents coming up, tho….which would not include Cal of course. Cal’s D looked OK vs. SC, held down running attack and got in Barkley’s face. Too much stupid shit from special teams and the QB, and no running game. Tedford is going to face another season of splainin to do if things don’t pick up with some winnable home games.
OK, the playoffs are not anywhere near the excitement of last year, and I CAN still feel the chest expanding pride of that WS win. [ndhn]
In fact this year’s is not as exciting as several playoffs I remember. But I just got my cable back and haven’t seen a game in a while. So I have my sports Sunday all set up.
12:30 Tigers fight to stay alive
06:00 F1 Korean grand prix
09:00 the All Blacks [NZ] v the Wallabees [AUS] (the two top teams in World Rugby) play in the semi to see who goes through to the championship against France.
then it is sleep and laundry until 9pm when NL baseball is back.Go Brewers, ugly loss Friday.
I am still in shock to see the Cards hanging in there, no Phillies, Sox or Yanks.
Twin, thanks for posting the comments, I didn’t realize I cut those off for this one. They were excellent, a very good read. Certainly more interesting than the playoffs this year. I might take a break from last year’s playoff thread posting a niner thread.
That last sentence made no sense. I’m posting a niner thread tomorrow. Where’s the “that was easy” button?
Without SF in it I haven’t watched much but I am pulling for Stl. I know a lot of you on here think he’s a douche but I’ve always liked LaRussa. Watching the game last night I noticed that he has pretty much the same coaching staff as when he was with Oakland. I remember going to school with McKay’s kid. He was a fucking punk. Could see a left coming. Glass jaw. But I digress. LaRussa is pretty loyal to those around him it seems. There was a funny quote on MSN today from one of his current players. Something about how he never takes his foot off the gas. Yeah, except when he three sheets to the wind passed out behind the wheel at a dead stop during spring training a few years back. I’m still pulling for him and Stl though.
I don’t dislike la russa until I see him prancing around in tights. It’s just too much of a “look at me” thing.
Those Washington St. uniforms are hideous. Dull gray is not a good color for a uniform.
I’ve enjoyed the playoffs. But I’m watching more sports than I ever have- I can’t bear most other television and last year spoiled me- having baseball into November. I even watched Hawaii/SJS- we got to see why coaches go with the prevent. Most coaches would rather get beat time and again going with the prevent than take the heat by going against the book and blitzing. I thought the all out blitz was a gutsy call- that backfired.. still liked it..
Then you should catch some of this cardinal gm. Action packed. I don’t understand why all college teams don’t just go with 5 receivers and an empty back field and no huddle. Someone is open, or the qb has room to run, almost every time.
Don’t get it here.
That was a chickenshit call right there. Cardinal 4th and 6 on Wasu’s 36 w/ 58 secs left in the half and they punt? You have the best QB in the land. Go for it.
I seem to recall a little play almost 30 yrs ago that had 58 secs left on the clock.
Go Tigers!
Stupid Tigers.
Well, Scherzer lost his slider and then his fastball stayed up.
NOW this game is boring.
ugg_lee
Detroit Kittens now. 😦
Cheezus — I blinked, it was 5-2. I blinked again, 7-2. Blinked again, 9-2. I should stop blinking?
Strange post season. This looks like the year of AL baseball. Last year was NL triumphant. Assuming Texas hangs onto its monstrous lead tonight, who among the NL pitchers will be ready to stride into the Arlington stadium to finish the Rangers off the way Lincecum did last year? I can imagine Carpenter in that role; and the bearded guy the Cards have filling in at closer could strike out Cruz for the final out. But how will the Cards get to that game? We all remember well how the Giaints got to the game on Nov. 1. Cain, Bumgarner, the great bullpen. I just don’t think the Cards have the pitching strength the Giants had. And if Milwakee makes it, I suspect the Rangers could win in 4. The Phillies and Atlanta, on paper, should’ve done better. But I could never root for either of those teams. The Cardinals? Maybe. I sure won’t want to watch the Rangers win it all, knowing how it could’ve been. Tough post season.
Of the teams left, the best ERAs are the Cards at 3.99, Texas 4.01 ( before tonight). Ours was 2.47 last year. Just FYI.
I know the numbers. ERA’s not very useful. No numbers are very useful for evaluating the Cardinals staff, at this point. Just fyi. The Rangers have enough pitching to win with their offense.
That was for all. ERA as a comparison is quite useful. In the Card’s case, of course, there’s the Jeckyl and Hyde factor. Rangers? Close to the Cards, really. Starting pitching has sucked for both. If it’s those two, which manager screws up the pen more, loses. That could go either way- Wash doesn’t know how to work the pen, and for LaRussa it’s just his new app…
That was was the second time, at least, that Buck has identified Ogando as a LHer…
Hope I don’t hex em, but Arizona St giving the O all they can handle right now.
Wash does have himself a closer, tho, better than what LaRussa has. And if his team scores 4 in the 11th, like they did twice, or a shitload like tonite, unless he’s bringing in Edlefsen he’s probably OK.
He may not be a genius, but he has managed to get his team into the World Series two years in a row. Last year he had to knock off the Yanks to do it, this year he beat both the giant killers, Tampa and Detroit…no small accomplishment.
Willie, you just jinxed ASU royally. I have ASU. Thanks for nothing.
Rangers again? Screw them. I hope they lose no matter who the NL representative may be…Wash is a shitty manager. That was on display last year when Bochy schooled his dumbass. He couldn’t manage his pen out of a paper bag. And real tough job there writing out your lineup. Nelson Cruz bats 7th for the Rangers —SEVENTH. Shit. Flav, TF, Chuckles and my pal Nipper could pencil in that lineup.
So it’s gonna be TEX vs either STL (21st TV market) or MIL (35th TV market). Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is gonna watch this World Series. As I speak there’s a watching the grass grow and paint dry cable channel in the works to scoop up their ratings.
When does bowling start back up?
sorry my man. I clicked back and forth, and I swear every time I watched, the O scored a TD in like 3 plays. And you are right I did hex them…not two minutes after the post was when the ASU QB threw the pick in end zone when the wideout slipped and fell and the DB brought it back 40 yds. 3 plays later…
Even with the back up, beating the O in their yard is a tough sled. Them and Boise might get the over to 100.
I probably won’t watch the series either, but if laRussa gets in it’s a definite.
Playing in STL was one series where SF just lit them up..Huff had the 3 bombs, his single best month in one night. I thought sure SF was a better team than they were at that point.
Watching this ASU/OSU game with Brent Musburger at the mic reminds me of my childhood watching the 49ers on CBS…”you are looking live at Candlestick Park…” I’ll never forget that brouhaha he had with The Greek in that NY bar. The next week they both showed up on The NFL Today wearing boxing gloves. I thought that was funnier than shit…then Jimmy would make his picks with that old board using the check marks. He was just one of many who contributed to my degenerate gambling.
I think I got hold of my first football parlay card when I was 14 yrs old and a freshman at Salesian. My Mom and I met this guy at the track who owned the local florist shop in Albany. Well, lo and behold he wasn’t just selling flowers. The store was a front for making book. I should have picked up on it, the flowers were never in season and he couldn’t make an arrangement to save his life. My aunt owned and operated a florist shop in Richmond for 25 years, I grew up there. I know what flowers should look like. Sam’s flowers looked like shit.
thanks for reposting this!!! brought me back and excited again for next year!
