A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

This Weekend…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 5, 2011

Breeders Cup….Cardinal…’Bama/LSU….Niners…..Raiders….in that order…..

And very little baseball to discuss. I read Cuddyer might be headed to Philly. That does nothing for me…….

Enjoy your weekend. I’m off to start the day with single digit hours remaining till first post…….

One thing I know I won’t do today, is get hot and bothered by what the Giants may or may not do. The Giants are not the Royals or Astros, they will do what they need to do to get back to the playoffs. I don’t believe Sabes is an idiot and I believe the owners understand that they make more money when the Giants do get in.
So fuck-a-doddle-doo to the hot stove for me (at least until stuff starts happening and Thome to the Phils isn’t stuff happening to me).

Bama and LSU should be a great game, I don’t follow college ball much but I do plan on tuning into that one.

Well, Philly will need to someone to cover 1b til Howard gets back from injury. Cuds puts up avg numbers at that spot, and is a liability on D. Proven hitter tho, and they didn’t get much from Francisco and D Brown as replacements for Werth. Sometimes the “kids” just don’t live up to projections having to face a year’s worth of mlb pitching and defense. The game ain’t that easy, as our POTD “older guy” learned last year.
Local East Bay kid is redshirt frosh QB for Oregon St., Sean Mannion. He’ll be in tough vs. the Furd, but watch out for him in a couple years. I’m not going to get into Pac 10 vs. other conferences argument, but the QBs that come out of here are pretty damn good, this year no exception. Even Oregon’s back up guy is really good.

I’m really torn between Troy-Navy and Idaho-San Jose St.

Seriously, Breeders Cup Stanford sounds good.

Baseball note: Panik Giant rep in the Rising Stars game today.

Well, I mocked the NIU/Toledo game and it turned out to be one of the best college basketball games ever..
Don’t put much stock in the “Game of the Century” until, oh, maybe 2060 or so. But I like Alabama tonight in the Game of the, uh, Last Five Weeks…
Bozo-you fucking clown, it’s already two days into free agency and you’re not freaked yet? 😉

Give me a week or two Twin.

I’m actually already getting excited about 2012, before anything has happened (yes, I’m a sick fucking clown).

Franchez is supposed to start baseball activity next month. If there isn’t any set backs, that will be a damn good thing.

Moresi at Fox sports is reporting the Giants may dangle Sanchez, according to “sources.” This has been talked to death here, I personally am in favor of holding on to him as his trade value is pretty low at this point. He’s a better risk/reward candidate than many free agents out there, even at a 5 mill a year. If he were traded, my ideal swap would be for Carlos Quentin, who is also in his last year of arbitration and has been injury prone and inconsistent. Given how Kenny Williams wanted to trade us Joe Crede for Sanchez a few years ago, my guess is he would lowball us again.

How’s my Breeders’ Cup Day going? I signed up and payed for a Survivor tournament thinking it started with the Marathon race only to find out it started with the previous race — I’m already out. I won’t let that stroke of genius stop me. I’ll spare you my comments, here’s my selections…

    Marathon — MEEZNAH
    Juvy Turf — WROTE
Sprint — EUROEARS *** Best Bet. Speed and rail. Catch the Baffert horse if you can.
    Turf Sprint — PERFECT OFFICER
Dirt Mile — WILBURN *** Love the Bernardini horses.
Turf — SARAFINA Toss her ARC. She rolls in the lane.
Juvy — ALPHA Finished behind the top choice. Bernardini horse turns the tables.
MILE — COURAGEOUS CAT Rooting for GOLDIGOVA for 4th in a row.
Classic — FLAT OUT No way in hell am I getting the 6/1 ML. That’s at least cut in half.

    Good luck.

Nipper, you wouldn’t believe the amount of shit I’m in. I don’t think there’s a shovel big enough to help dig me out of this cavernous hole that these equines have dug me into. Actually, I dug the hole myself. It’s just easier to blame the poor animal…

        STAY THIRSTY, my friend.

He runs later today in the Classic, and I’m not going to bet him. If he wins, I give you permission to take the shovel and to start burying me in the dirt. That will be the final nail.

Now, go get me some fucking ice.

Yeah, trading Dirty has been a hot topic for years, probably the most common return had been Jorge Candon’t..The problem, of course, is that he is all that stands in the way of Zito back in the rotation. And I’d think that the Wellenmeister proved that it DOES matter who the 5 is. If they could get a good return for Jonathan and also get maybe Oswalt, I could see it.
The reasoning behind *possibly* dangling him would most likely be that the free agent pool for both shortstops ( after Reyes and Rollins) and CFers is dreadfully thin if they actually want, you know, like, an UPGRADE…we’ll see…

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on November 5, 2011 at 11:16 am

I’m seem to recall you vetoed my Dirrty for Jose Reyes swap early last year. Forget the fact that the Mets *most likely* would not have pulled the trigger, that wasn’t the point. It was if *you* would pull the trigger given the chance. You and 80+% of the other Flappers soundly rejected my offer. Tell me you wouldn’t make that trade now. And I don’t give a shit about our lack of SP depth.

Scenario A) Uncle Jesse at SS and Dirrrty at #5 OR B), Reyes at SS and Zitshit at #5.
If you don’t select B, you’re destined to reside in that Room forever.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on November 5, 2011 at 11:26 am

I vetoed it because the METS would never do it, Death Threat Denny. That *is* the point, Wet Brain…
But just so there is no misunderstanding, I heartily endorse Dirty Sanchez for Ryan Braun..

Then again, Divine Brown is more your type anyway…

It’s an idiotic question. You’re just trying to find someone stupid enough to loan you drinking money. Anyway, the answer is “no”. Why would anyone be dumb enough to make a Sanchez/Reyes fantasy trade when he can get Verlander and Miggy Cabrera for No WHITEY ?

Another local note….leading rusher for USC last night as they continue the welcome party for Colorado into the Pac 12 was true frosh Amir Carlisle (10 carries 90 yds), who had an illustrious career at The King’s Academy here on the former site of Blade’s alumnus, Sunnyvale HS.
I reffed some b-ball games there a few years ago, and yes prayer are involved pre and post game. Same gym I played (well, mostly watched, my coach was pretty smart guy) in back in the late 60s.

Didn’t see muich mention of it, Bob Forsch, who threw out the first pitch in Game 7 this year, has passed away. He won 168 games in the bigs, making him one of LiveFree’s “career mediocrities”. Actually, he pitched a couple no-hitters and was the third winningest pitcher in Card history. You might remember him as the guy who hit Hac-Man with a pitch in the ’87 playoffs. He was sick of the “one flap down” thing…
Forsch was 61, he died of an aneurysm . From what I’ve read, he had not been in poor health.

You want a can’t miss winner? I’ll give ya one…”Luck,” the new HBO original series set to debut in January starring Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Dennis Farina among others is a exciting new drama set around the track.

Just want to get my 2 cents in on the “College Game of the Year.” I’ll admit I’m biased, I’ve seen LSU play 5 times this year, Bama only once. The Tigers’ D-line is NFL quality. They’re 7-8 deep, and they rotate those monsters and inflict pain on their opponents.

The O/U is 41 1/2. I like the UNDER and the best D-line in the country.

    LSU 20-16

I know the spin stops here, but Jesus H. Christ. I’d prefer if the losing stopped first.

DT Denny’s contribution to serious baseball talk is whether, knowing what you know now, you would have traded Dirty for Reyes last summer. I’ve tried to point out that since it was, in his words, a “fantasy question”, who would be dumb enough to settle for that OR Liz Hurley when in the fantasy game you can get Miggy Cabrera and Justin Verlander for Whitey… AND Liz will throw her sister in ? As you can see, Kate’s a little shy, Liz will warm her up…

Thank goodness the game is on CBS- Lundquist isn’t thrilling but he’s solid, and most importantly- he’s not Mussberger… of course, when I check on Oklahoma State- there’s Brent.

Tebow might be the worst-throwing NFL quarterback I’ve ever seen. I guess Sonny Jurgenson was pretty bad at throwing, too; but that was a different era, when running the ball was so much more a dominant part of the game.

  25. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on November 6, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Geez, Sonny was one of the better QBs of his era, Z. A better comparison might be Bobby Douglas, a truly awful passer who rushed for over 900 yards one year..

Yeah, not sure what I based my Jurgenson comment on. Some half-remembered statement from some football pundit that I probably heard wrong.

  26. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on November 6, 2011 at 5:41 pm

When you see Tebow interviewed, he seems like a pretty nice kid- I watched him after the game today, and a lot of the Raiders seemed to genuinely be happy for him. Probably divided along the God Line…

  27. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on November 6, 2011 at 7:16 pm

That’s the first game I’ve seen him play since college. He’s definitely got skills. It’s amazing he can miss wildly on one throw and be dead-on the next. He was an amazing college player, maybe the best I ever saw play (even better than Elway in terms of *best* I ever saw play. He’s a tough mother fucker, too. I loved that moment in the game when he tried to stiff arm raider linebacker (new guy, can’t remember his name) and dude just slaps the stiff arm out of the way and buries him. The raider rush defense should forfeit their paychecks this week.

  28. zumie's avatar zumie said, on November 6, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Tebow is tough and battles. He has to be given credit for that. Throws a lot of wounded ducks, though.

Flacco was nails in the Ravens final drive- he’s been another labeled with the “game manager” tag. Great game.

  30. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 7, 2011 at 8:42 am

For all the flak Tebow gets (1/2 of it deservedly so), he played a hell of a game. He looked like a complete washout one series, then in the next, he splits 2 defenders 35 yards down the field for a TD.

By about the 4th naked bootleg, you would have thought the Raiders would have gotten a clue. Sadly, they didn’t. The Raider ‘defense’ gave up 31 points to Denver in the 2nd half? Ouch.

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on November 7, 2011 at 8:51 am

I said before season started they couldn’t replace Asomugha and the DBs would get exposed all over the field. Run D nowhere to be seen…add in all the dumb penalties, and Hue has a lot more to worry about than “football operations” and taking over the GM job. As in, saving his own ass.

  31. willieD's avatar willieD said, on November 7, 2011 at 8:47 am

I think sonny jurgensen right now is a better QB than anyone else Washington has. He might need more than the 3 seconds he used to, but he led a wide open passing attack for Skins back in the day. Receivers were HOF guy Charlie Taylor (Arizona St), bobby mitchell (jim; brown’s buddy from cleveland browns) and Jerry Smith, who in later years acknowledged being gay, pretty courageous thing to admit in a sport like football. Skins were fun to watch battle Dallas.
Cool helmet too, esp the dark burgundy one with the arrow down the side. Yes I’m an old fart, but I love the unis and helmets from back in the day—vikings, eagles, cards, LA rams, chargers, jets, et al.
