Packing His Baggs and Moving On
Someone mentioned this a while back and I didn’t take notice of it until it actually happened and he wrote a *goodbye post* the other day at the Merc. The reality is, this doesn’t change anything for me except where I click on the internet. Baggs is still going to be churning out his excellent blog, it’s just found in a different spot on my bookmark bar. Here is the tiny url for you to do the same:
I can probably count on one hand the number of San Jose Mercury’s I’ve bought in my lifetime. I was a die hard Chron guy. At least, until they did a hatchet job on Barry–I cancelled my subscription the same day and haven’t bought a single paper since. It wasn’t that hard to do, I read pretty much everything on the internet these days. I didn’t start reading Baggs’ blog until probably 2008. I think I clicked on a link someone posted and I’ve been hooked ever since. I don’t think it would be a stretch to say he’s the hardest working beat writer out there. He often talks about being the last one in the press box after a game and I think it’s obvious that his attention to detail, and the homework he clearly does for an article, shows his commitment to his trade. His first article for Comcast is classic Baggs. I hope he got a big raise to make this career jump, he clearly deserves one….
Outside of reading a Kawakami blog post every now and again, I can’t imagine why I’d ever go back to the Mercury website……
Mercury sucks!
Thanks for the link. That is a helluva debut. Baggs is the best, hands down.
I’ve liked his fill in, Carl Steward, even better, and I don’t get the animus for Schulman here. I think Baggarly is most popular because he regularly the crosses line between beat writer and Jenkins-style columnist. And his comments from readers are a hoot- wwhich correctional facility do they come from?
BTW, Jenkins is the best columnist , IMO..
I was referring to beat writers. Nothing against Schulman. Love Jenkins work, too.
Wasn’t referring to your post, ST.
I hadn’t heard of “Baggs” until I started coming here to the Flap. All youse guys kept referring to him but I had no idea who “Baggs” was and was too embarrassed to ask. I can’t remember whether I finally figured it out when someone also cross referenced to The Merc or I finally had the contrition to ask someone here. I like him, hell I like Schulman too, but I can’t stand A LOT of the people that post there. Some are even worse than the Splash.
Well before the Internet, I read only the Chronicle. it was paper so there was no way to post comments. I read the Chron for two reasons, the sporting green, when it really was Green, and for Herb Caen. would have loved for Caen to have had a blog, would have been the best ever! IMO, for general info on SF anyway. when the cost went to 75 cents a day is when I went to the internet. Year???? don’t remember.
meh… April not getting here soon enough. Looks like the SFG marketing dept. is getting creative: Anybody going to the “Bruce Lee Tribute Night” (Sep4)?
I read about that. Bobble head and everything. Well, Bruce *was* born here in SF
They need to work that angle a little more. Clint Eastwood bobblehead night would make my day.
YAY YAY ! The return return of of Mr Mr Bill Bill hoot hoot!
missed a “the”
I enjoyed that article by Baggs. I wouldn’t mind reading more of those types of stories. I hope Comcast let’s him blog as often as he did for the Extra Baggs blog.
Ratto is really the only one at the Chron that I didn’t like, certainly the print media has been far away better than the talking heads. The sports anchors are a disgace.
My brother’s late wife, if you’d care to look.

Sorry for the loss to you and your family. She was lovely
Gee, what a shame. What a loss.
Lovely Lady Michael, Deepest Condolences to you and your family.
Damn. Didn’t realize she was so young. What a tragedy. My condolences, Mike.
Well, I truly enjoyed Baggs’s “A Band of Misfits,” which I suspect consisted mostly of a compilation of articles. Good stuff.
The Merc? My only experience is this: before game 1 of the 2010 WS some young guy comes along with a hand truck with hundreds of these “FEAR THE BEARD The Mercury News” posters with a likeness of You Know Who’s Half-Visage. They were supposed to be 50 cents, I think. People set upon the guy like ravenous, manic sharks. I grabbed one, maybe gave the kid a buck. It is wedged in above my bulletin board in back of me as I type.
Thank you all. I am so so tired. GNight
Hey, no happy birthday wishes to Nate the Great?
Only if your talking about the The only true “Nate the Great” Bozo and that would be Nate Thurmond!!!
Just bugs me the Giants still bring in “Stiffs” to pitch. Now it’s Ramon Ortiz coming to ST.Yeah sure it’s to waste innings only, but give some youngsters some experience instead.Freakin Ortiz is 39 and Washed Up.
I hope Hembree is going to show well this spring. If Wilson’s elbow acts up, I’m not seeing anybody else able to take over on a regular basis…
Snarkk….Just heard on KNBR,think it was Flemming saying they don’t expect The Bearded One to start the season maybr missing the first few weeks.
Then it could come down to matchups/closer by comititee.Romo,Affeldt,Casilla.You know Boch will go that route over Hembree.Though i would like to see him get a shot, early in the season
If Wilson can’t go, the Giants have 3 viable options to close.
Romo has the sickest numbers. His K/BB ratio rivals Dennis Eckersley in his CY year. But his head, by his own admission, might not be ready for closing.
Affeldt has done the job before. he’s got the least sickest stuff of the 3 as we know
Casilla, for all the insanity he brings to the mound, did the closing thing just fine last year with 6 saves. He’s a ground ball pitcher who dominates right handed batters. His obvious problem is control.
But we have 3 guys who can do this job. No way do they go the Hembree route if Wilson can’t go…….
I vote for Casilla. He’s fearless and consistent mid 90’s…
well that’s an opinion I can get behind. On the next thread. LinSania!!!!!
