A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bee-Wheezy Ready to Go

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 28, 2012

I’m giving Wilson the benefit of the doubt when he says he’s pain free and ready to go. I hadn’t stopped to look at his 2011 list of injuries but they are imposing, especially for a pitcher.

1) Spring training: bad back

2) end of Spring training: oblique strain

3) all of 2011– bad hip

4) the 2nd half of the season: balky elbow

If you were gonna list off the 4 worst nagging injuries for a pitcher, those would be the 4 (ok, maybe *shoulder* would be in there too). But none of those injuries required surgery. And as worried as I was about his elbow I’m now willing to chalk that up to the other 3 injuries possibly contributing to it. Think about it, with all that going on in his body last year it’s entirely possible that he was compensating for 1 or all 3 in his delivery—that’s how you can indirectly injure or irritate other parts of your body and maybe that’s why the elbow started to bark at him……

I still don’t understand why the Giants coaching and medical staff don’t get in front of these players and sit them down when they KNOW they have injuries that need to heal. Look, if you’re a professional baseball player, you want to be out there no matter what. Each day you sit is another day someone else might take your job. And Wilson, by all accounts, is the ultimate competitor. Finally last August, they did sit him but that was only after he almost did serious harm to his elbow. It’s the same stupid mindset that the Warriors current management is taking with Stephen Curry. SIT HIM ALREADY!!!!!

Still, it looks like we dodged a major bullet and Bee Wheezy is going to be good to go in 2012. With all those nagging injuries behind him, I’m *two flaps up* on how he’s going to do this year. Let’s hope he’s good to go, he’s one of our 5 most critical, irreplaceable players (Timmy, Cain, Panda and Buster being the other 4)………

Flav, no Pablo on the list of irreplaceables?

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on February 28, 2012 at 8:32 am

      Panda = Pablo.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on February 28, 2012 at 9:03 am

Actually Pablo does get overlooked a lot. To many the team is Timmy, Buster, and their rotating supporting cast.

well, from now on when I see the words “wilson sez” i’m paying zero attention to it. He’s 100%? Ready for opening day? fine. I can admire his competitive spirit, but when it gets to Steve Young I’m going back in there/where am I level, he has to be thankful there were smarter people than him around to handle it..
And yes, it is a good thing someone on coaching staff made the sensible decision last year to shut his ass down once and for all. I have no idea how 2010 factored into any of his problems, but obviously you have to wonder if he could have been shut down earlier, tho surely that would have met similar and more vocal resistance on wilson’s part.
I dunno what to do about Curry, but Rick Barry needs to STFU and stop pushing his shoe co. into the argument. As usual he isn’t serving anyone but himself. also means you can’t possibly dump Monta, who is a scorer first and distributor a distant second, and not near as good a perimeter shooter.

Hey Flappers! Been in Ecuador for the last two weeks and this country rocks (not only saying that because I got laid either. HA!).

I saw Pawlie’s post, “Natch. I’m in for FL. I led for much of last season until I got suckered, eyes wide open, by one of Blade’s 6,781 trade offers” and it is a complete lie. I only made 2629 trade offers to him.

    🙂

It’s probable the number of 4-out and 5-out saves from 2010 took a toll on Wilson. He’s one of the many heroes from 2010. Hopefully he’s fully recovered.

You prefer the A’s medical staff? It was a tough year in 2011, but it seems that the Giants actually have done a pretty good job at keeping their players on the field and productive. And obviously the player is the last guy to to ask, that’s always been true in any sport..
but wait, accoring to James, they can save a few million and have Hensley do the job just as well..(as Wilson)

    • James's avatar James said, on February 28, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Of course, as usual, that’s not the argument. Funny how the sabrmetrics and common sense go out the window when it comes to closers. The idea that a GM could divine in advance that, e.g., Brad Lidge would give up that big fly to Pujols in 2005 is sheer nonsense.

I always liked Stephen Wright’s line. “I hate it when my foot falls asleep during the day, because that means it’ll be up all night . . .”

A healthy Wilson and the Giants BP may be in position to stand head and shoulders above the rest. With that pair of top-flight loogies combined with the sheer nastiness of Romo and Castilla, there is very close to a lock on the 7th and 8th innings. You throw in Mota and Hensley or whomever to deal with those occasions that our number five starter (and on odd occasion, one of the four Aces) are not up to snuff and the coverage is near complete. With talents like Hembree and Runzler at the top of the pipeline, even an injury or maybe even two, should not seriously compromise one very solid relief corps.

In military parlance this could be called defense in depth.

Hot times down by the Equator where Blade got laid. Happy afterdreams, dude.

Wilson should know his own body, but he’s also proven to not respect it when it tells him it’s breaking down. Plus, he’s in a contract year, the Giants have a team option for next season at $10M or something like that. So, excuse me if I disregard pretty much what Wilson says about his ailments, or lack thereof. The proof will be in the pitching…

  9. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on February 28, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Wilson is a “gamer”. His word on his ailments should never be a consideration.

Ted, I´m still in Quito, Ecuador – but fly back to Panama City for two days on the 4th, then back to Denver on the 6th.

Twin, glad to hear you are doing relatively well, despite the setbacks, etc. I have been monitoring the Flap while in S. America, but my frickin´tablet is so difficult to use with a touchpad keyboard. I have no idea how teenagers do it. Anywho, the hotel I am at right now, occasionally has a pc w/keyboard available, so I can catch up on emails, etc. In any event, like I said, I hope you are doing well. Same goes for all Flappers!

This doesn´t have anything to do with today´s topic, other than it´s baseball, but when I was in Panama, it took me nearly 3 weeks to figure out why all the locals were wearing NY Yankee hats and then it hit me . . . Mariano Rivera. He is a national hero here. This was confirmed by a black Panamanian I rode a bus with (from David to Panama City). Very, very nice guy. He also said that Panamanians and quite a few Latin American countries – not named Mexico, they usually go with LA – relate to NY because they Latin Americans either have large pockets of family living there, i.e., NY is frequently the first stop and where many of them settle (especially Panamanians).

Do you know how usually it´s only the cities that are in the Playoffs or World Series, where you see the bars fill up? In Panama, they are crazy about baseball ALL THE TIME. They just had their High School championship series (not exactly certain that´s what they call it, but the kids looked like they were 16-18 years old) and every night the clubs and bars were tuned in and they were packed with people.

Blade….I would have thought Boxer Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran would also still be a legend in Panama.
Matter of fact he even says it…”There’s only one legend. That’s me”-Roberto Duran
Also he says “Getting hit motivates me.It make me punish the guy more.A fighter takes a punch hits back with three punches”-Roberto Duran

sTwin your alright in my book.I know your life the past few years have been hell with all your medical issues and i can relate some, not with my health, but my best friend of over 40 yrs.Who has been in and out of a hospital since last Aug,first with colon cancer, then when they opened him up they found cancer in the rectum,6 hr operation. After that he had a hard time digesting food, found out he had a kink in a valve on his right side, had to open him up again.Fixed that, then the same thing happened on his left side.Just the other day he had to rush back to the hospital cause he was bleeding in his stool. He is a Hell of a fighter though and i admire him even more every day for the Nightmare he goes through.Forgot to mention he also had and beat Testicular cancer 10 yrs ago.Just stay positive and fight on Twin.

    Who will win 12 games?
    A. Zito
    B. Vogelsong
    C. Dirty
    D. None
    E. Or pick ’em

  17. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on February 28, 2012 at 6:52 pm

I said maybe 2 hours before he got traded that I thought Dirrrrrty needed a change of scenery. He’s getting that in KC. I am not predicting a 12+ win year but it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Voggy? I could see exactly 12 wins, no more than that and probably less.
Zito isn’t going to win 12 more games in the rest of his career. Book it.
Ok, I sold myself on it, Dirrrty has a nice bounce back year and wins 14. Now I have to figure out what round to draft him in. 🙂

  18. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on February 28, 2012 at 7:01 pm

He may go on to have a good year, but Sanchez was done here. He had to go. He may pitch well in spots for KC, but the problems that plagued him here will reoccur at some point. Once a head case, always a head case. Call it the Ponson law.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on February 28, 2012 at 7:40 pm

      Yeah, you get Zito instead.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on February 28, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Besides signing him in the first place, the worst thing about Zito is that he ever made even one decent start. The only chance there ever was to dump his ass was if he was bombed every time out. So who will be the be first to say he’s baaaaaaaaaaaccccccck after he makes one good start? I’ll go with the Bambino..

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on February 28, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I never understood the *good* Zito starts. I’d watch them and 2 things would happen: screaming line drives to an outfielder who would catch them and a bunch of weakly hit ground balls dispersed in the infield. To me, even in the good starts, there was an absurd amount of luck involved in his starts. The off-balance shit he’d get the hitters into where they would flail away and ground out is just what any soft-tosser can do. The screaming line drive outs? I’ll never figure out how he got those balls to go so consistently into the outfield mitts, during a single game, that turned into a quality start………

  20. James's avatar James said, on February 28, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Well, Zito *does* still have a good curve ball. His K/IP ratios in 09 and 10 might explain how he got lucky from time to time. If he had the command that usually accompanies an 84 mph fastball, he probably wouldn’t suck.

  21. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on February 28, 2012 at 10:27 pm

zito is “effective” with an 88 mph fastball. when his fastball is slower than that, the difference in speed between the fastball and the curve ball is greatly diminished. a well located 88-89 mph fastball can be effective in MLB. 84, not so much.

Heard a report from Marty Lurie that Pill has been taking grounders at 3b.
I wondered the other day who would back up if Panda got hurt. That would seem not a bad idea, if he can actually pick it a little over there. 1B seems to be getting crowded — Belt reported in an interview he hasn’t practiced much OF in the offseason…
